5 stars just for the beer. I mean holy crap this is some GOOD STUFF. I tried everything..and my friends and I even bought a couple bottles to open up as well. So much awesome sour funky goodness. What about everything else? Well the location is weird..its way out in the middle of nowhere by a blimp hangar. The place is small. The seating areas are kind of akward and not too comfortable. But whatever the beer is totally 100% worth it!! The staff is awesome too. They know their stuff and are super nice. Most places like this (with a big reputation for high end complex beer) tends to have a staff that is full of themselves. Definitely not the case there. Those other places (cough..crooked stave..cough) also tend to gouge on their pricing as well..De Garde does not. Tasters, full pours, and bottles are all very reasonably priced. It was really nice to visit and will definitely come back the next time I visit the Portland area..even though its a bit of a drive! read more

I loved that their beer is wild fermented. All their own beers are sours, but I think they carry beers from other breweries that aren't sours. "The purple" is aptly named; even the foam is purple from all the berries!! It was a real treat, very fruit-forward, very unique. If you are a lavender fan, definitely stop by for the "botanique". The aromatics are present but not overpowering. And "the orchard", which is described as having peaches, is complex, fruity, and funky - it would pair really well with cheese. The only drawback is that they don't offer flights, but they will pour you a splash of any of their beers you'd like to try before committing to a full glass. read more

My boyfriend and I took a trip to Portland, and the first thing we did after checking into our Airbnb was drive an hour and a half to Tillamook just for de Garde! My favorite beer was Special Rouge. They have a lot of neat bottles to be consumed at the brewery, like a white truffle beer, but we didn't get a chance to try any. Just because your brewery is located next to a prison doesn't make you a bad ass. The beer was decent. The service was lackluster at best. I'm sorry mister bartender, do I order by roman numeral or by the hipster name you dubbed thee? Apparently numbers. I asked which ale was the "crab" after Mr cool trucker hat sat two in front of me, scoffed pointed them out and said 4 and 5. Ummm Like dollars? If you enjoy narcissistic Raging dicks with craft beer hard ons, this is the place for you. If you have children, you should probably get back in your minivan and find the nearest Chuckie Cheese, order a Bud Light and drown yourself in the plastic balls because you are not allowed in the presence of such greatness. I'm not usually a fan of sour beers but oh wow De Garde completely changed my perspective on them. The saison tasted almost like lemonade, the farm house ale was tart but almost sweet at the end, and my favorite if the day, the tableau rouge can only be described as the perfect beer for a warm sunny day. Wow, if you are a craft beer fan and you find youself anywhere in the state of Oregon, this brewery is a must. The Boysenberry Bu is the 2nd best beer I've ever had, and I'm really more of a stout girl. My husband shares my sentiment about this place and their beer, too, and he usually prefers west coast IPAs. One of my favorite things in life is discovering off the beaten path, lesser known gems. And while de Garde is not undiscovered, it is definitely an off the beaten path gem by a zeppelin hangar on a country road with fresh air, lots of open fields, and not many other buildings - kind of ripe for an alien abduction story. We tasted everything they had on tap, and all of them were distinct and enjoyable. 2 of the 6 were kind of meh to me, but Chris ended up liking them, so it was perfect! We picked up t-shirts to remember our time here, and it's my favorite brewery merch at the moment. When I wear it at beer festivals here in SF, those in the know comment on it and it's a great conversation starter. I had high expectations based on the Yelp reviews, and de Garde exceeded them. What luck. Googled breweries near Tilamook and found this gem. Named one of the top 5 in the WORLD by rate beer. Sour heaven. The dry hopped citrus sour was incredibly delicious. Didn't have one we didnt like. But that one was a stand out. Only wish they'd sell the petit a l'orange in bottles. We'd have taken home a case. read more

I've visited de Garde before, at their original location out by the Tillamook airport, and now the new location in downtown Tillamook. I'm also a member of their Keepers club, which means I get 2 exclusive-release bottles per quarter. The new place is a huge improvement, in space and hospitality. I had hoped that when they announced they were opening a pub, that would mean they would have food too, but no. Maybe they'll add some food trucks outside later? I was there on the opening day, which happened to be Black Friday, and it was pretty packed, even though the only place they announced the opening was on their Facebook page. I mean, line out the door, packed. Luckily it was a relatively balmy day on the coast, so standing outside for a few mins until the line abated wasn't so bad. I got 6oz tasters of all 6 of their own beers on tap. They also had 6 guest taps, all Oregon stuff, beer and cider. Staff was hustling and friendly, and while they had some first-day snags, like forgetting to put out a self-serve water tank, they were quick to fetch us some water when I asked. I'm sure I'll be back to visit many times. read more

In my top 5 breweries worldwide ... just a shame that their brews are so difficult to obtain. Funky, sour, tart ... wild ales, farmhouse ales ... all brewed with natural fermentation (beer geeks will LOVE that!). It's well over an hour from Portland, but absolutely worth the effort of getting here - coming here is more of a pilgrimage. Bartenders are super nice ... all the patrons are so cool - like a bunch of beer geeks getting together for a bottle share. This place is truly special - even if you don't like their style of beer. De Garde is my absolute favorite American brewery hands down, not even close. Every single one of their beers is either above average or top notch. They are almost exclusively a sour only brewery so be aware of that. My favorite are their fruited Bu's (berliner weisse style) because they are not only more sour than a traditional berliner weisse but the fruit really shines through. For instance their Imperial Apricot Bu is like drinking lightly carbonated Kern's nectar and the alcohol is very well hidden. The pricing at de Garde is also unlike most breweries and that is reasonable. For draft beers I believe the price is around $4 for 12oz and most bottles to go are in the $7-$14 range. read more

I've been pushed by my beer friends to give de garde another chance so I went to their anniversary party on May 5th. Had a good time in line with some people waiting for them to open and once they opened it was sort of a mess. They had more people than they should have had in their spot and beer tappings were hard to get to. I'm not complaining about that as it was an event but they could have had a better system put in place. My big gripe was how they did limits on their released bottles especially since most people don't live in Tillamook and have to drive all the way out to this place and get a very low limit on things to take home. I heard some people asking for more bottles and were told that what they get is enough and that if they want more they are probably wanting to sell or trade them. Kind of funny since they claim these are 'LAMBICS" which are meant to age so getting 3 or 4 bottles would be ideal for many people who age things. Most places usually do a better job at limits for their customers especially special releases are meant to be aged. My other problem was how once it died down some of the people working were talking rudely about some customers that could be heard from where I was sitting. There are so many great places to drink beer in the Portland Metro area that coming all the way out here to have some wanna-be lambics and funky sours aren't worth it. From the way, they ban people, the elitist attitude, and rude employees this place should not be so highly regarded. Sure, they do decent beer (though quality has dropped since their first couple of years) but in all honesty, the culture around this place is very "sour" (pun intended). read more

Found next to the Air Museum, a cute little spot with outside seating. Not being someone that's ever had Sours I may not be the best of judges. But I'm open to trying new beers so I gave it a shot. I just wish the gal had explained the beers a bit more since I said I didn't know where to start- she quickly poured me three different testers, 2 bucks each (price was nice). But it's more on me for not asking questions. Sours are something I could sip on, while sitting on the porch on a hot summer day. Take a look in the back and see where the production happens. Go for the beer, nothing else. You won't be disappointed. Unless you don't like sour beers. The vibe is very laid back and friendly. While there are plenty of hipsters and beer snobs here. We, as a family with a two year old, also felt welcome. It is easy enough to keep the little ones out on the grass in front of the place. As others have mentioned, there is no food here. My suggestion is to get some brie or other cheese as the Tillamook/Blue Heron cheese factories and bring the food there. We were just there yesterday and already I'm missing it. Not to be missed. They're doing a good job making primarily sour beers here. De Garde makes visiting Tillamook worth it if you've burned out on visiting the creamery, or makes for a nice contrast of sweet ice cream vs. sour beer. This is a tasting room, not a brewpub. So, don't expect anything more than some snacks like pretzels to soak up the beer. A little hard to find in an industrial park, but there's tons of parking around and GPS steers you there easily. Great service from the bartender, and she did a great job talking beer and brewing with the beer geeks as well as steering people toward the right choices. Their petit beers- sour saison/farmhouse style, are more of what I liked, their Petit DeSay was good and more tart, but also their Petit Azacca held up well with dry hopping giving a fruity undertone. Their Berliner Weisse, Bu, is a decent session beer and gets hit with fruit for some nice combinations. This beer has improved a ton in the last couple of years since soon after their opening, when it had a lot of off flavors.Their non-sours, Deus Ex Machina, and imperial stout, and Wonder Twins IPA were solid as well. We tried some fruity tasting room-only bottled beers too and they were decent, but not as good as the farmhouse beers in my opinion. While the beer was good, the service was terrible. Staff was rude and not interested in helping or putting off any sort of welcoming vibe. Other patrons (that I assume are locals) say snide comments such as "just another weekend at the coast" when you enter the brewery and are attempting to figure out the offerings. Definitely felt like outsiders weren't welcome and questions were scoffed at. If traveling with family-be sure to have a sitter for little ones if you want to even sniff out these brews or just mark this off your visit list all together. The highlight is every night 15 minutes before they close the blimp comes out of the giant hanger behind the brewery and does a lap. Definitely stop here and enjoy.
