This review is more of a 1.5 star, really. Once upon a time, Dead Fish Grill was actually pretty good. That time was very short lived. The last 4 or 5 times I've gone (I go if others in my group want to / I can't dissuade them), the service has been bad, the food has been bad, and the prices have been inflated. For instance, mere minutes ago, a group of us got a table outside because there was a long wait for inside seating. The hostess sat us right by a giant floor fan that drowned out a lot of our conversation, but we figured we could deal with it. We start looking at the menu and wait for our waitress to show up.. Waiting.. waiting... jeez. 25-30 later our waitress finally shows up (I had to ask another waitress to find her first, though). She's fairly unfriendly and is "mean muggin'" the whole table. Whatever, we're hungry, so we'll deal with it. As we are placing our order, super-loud live music starts.. Bad live music. We have to yell for the waitress to hear us. We're all starting to get aggravated. We place our orders and wait. and wait and wait. The waitress brings out free "garlic rolls" and they tasted awful. She brings our drinks at the same time and we notice that one of the glasses looks like it has already been drank out of / the lemon has already been squeezed to hell and back (plainly apparent). So, we decide to leave. As we are walking out, one of us stops the manager just to calmly let him know the story, but he seems completely non-plussed about the whole deal and pretty much waves us on our way. I really and honestly did used to like Dead Fish Grill. Now, they've gotten too big for their britches or something - all I know is the service sucks, the food isn't very good, and the prices definitttteeely do not reflect the quality. Go elsewhere! Consistently bad food. I ordered fried fish and it was obviously frozen from a package. Hush puppies were tasteless and you can get better waffle fries at a fast food joint. I understand that a lot of it is we pay for the atmosphere and view but this has been horrible! We went for lunch or "brunch" for them, SUPER Limited menu, the drinks are not listed at all even on their drink menu left at the table(we didn't want spirits), the waitress looked at me crazy when I asked what they had because it's not listed anywhere. The food took FOREVER to get to us and when we did get it we were so disappointed the quality of food was not worth the wait, the burgers were so bland, the coleslaw had no dressing, the fish and shrimp had zero flavor, there was such little seasoning on the fries they may as well have been plain. It took forever for our waitress to get back to us which is understandable to an extent but when we went it wasn't all that busy. I really hate that a place this beautiful could serve such mediocre food :( read more

Tried to take the family to dinner 6 of us. The manager was totally rude, told us we would have to wait 20 minutes in an empty restaurant, for shift change? Never in my life, have I felt like I was being refused service.They didn't offer to seat us temporarily, or offer us drinks. I really wanted to like this place and have given it numerous chances. Almost every single time, they have failed. Let me start by saying the view is amazing! That's about the only good thing I can say about them. The service varies from poor to horrendous. Whatever you do, don't complain about the service as they will threaten to call the police on you for doing so! I wish I was joking but am not. I've had it happen and seen it with several other people. Read the reviews if you don't believe that. When you have a management team that cannot handle complaints and criticism, it's probably time to bring in a new management team. Employees are frequently rude and service is usually slow. The food isn't much better. Sometimes it can be just ok and other times, well it's just plain terrible. As much as I want to like this place, I can't. I cannot recommend it either. My advice is to go somewhere else where you are appreciated, the service is good, and the food is actually tasty. My husband and I had our wedding reception here this past weekend and I was not pleased with the service at all. I recall meeting with the banquet coordinator at least three times prior to our event so I thought everything was clear. It was understood to us how the event would flow, or so I thought. The food was definitely good, but the service was poor for the duration of the reception. When it was time for our toast I realized there were no drinks on the table. This is something that was discussed prior to the event. I went to ask for the manager because gratuity is automatically charged and I could not figure out why we had to get our own drinks for the toasting as we were told they would be on the table. I do not recall ever speaking with the manager. The bartender ended up trying to put drinks on everyone's table with the help of my husband. They were seriously under staffed, which made no sense to me considering we provided the numbers prior to the event. I have dined at this restaurant before which was part of the reason I chose it for my reception, but the day of my wedding of all days I had a negative experience. No one pays gratuity and is expected to serve themselves. We did not even get an apology. Everyone seemed as if they didn't know what was going on. read more

Brunch has really developed here. The menu has new additions. We have been multiple times. Larry is a great server, he was great on Father's Day and just as great today. So disappointed with the service today at DFG. It's never fast, but it was exceptionally slow today. And it's not like the place was full-there were plenty of empty tables. Once seated, it took our waitress several minutes to get our drink order. After being told they were out of what I wanted to order, we waited another almost 10 minutes for our waitress to come back again just to get our order. She finally did, so after every one of us have emptied our drinks & waited...she passed several times! I finally got up, intending on getting refills myself when she finally came back. Always unapologetic about our wait. The good food earned the 2 stars. Fried catfish, amazing fries, delicious cfc. The cherry on top of this frustrating lunch was: my hubby ordered as Bloody Mary off of the brunch menu before 2 (before we even got to order). He did not get it until almost 2:15- after we got our food! Then when we got our ticket, he had been charged $9 for what was suppose to be $3.50! Ugh!!! A co-worker and I went here for supper on Friday of a "payday weekend" at nearby Fort Hood and arrived to find a full parking lot and expected a long wait. Our timing was great and a parking space opened right in front of the entrance. We were welcomed by the very professional, courteous hostess who asked if we wanted a table inside or outside. We chose outside since the weather was great and were taken directly to our table on the porch overlooking Belton Lake - GREAT view! Sarie, our waitress took our drink orders as soon as we were seated and waited patiently as we looked over the menu and were entertained by the evening retreat, salute cannon firing on the porch. She then took our orders and before we knew it our soup orders (seafood gumbo and crawfish etouffee) and lettuce wedge salads were served. The soup was hot and seasoned perfectly and had a fresh piece of buttered French bread in the top of the cup (huge cups by the way). The salads were also great and cold and fresh with perfect tomatoes! Before we could finish our soup and salad, our meals arrived! My fried seafood platter was excellent and my coworker's fish and chips were as well. No room for dessert but they looked very enticing! We had heard good things about Deadfish Grill from friends, but after seeing the Yelp reviews we came with somewhat low expectations. We were pleasantly surprised with our experience and will definitely be back. First, the view is awesome. Cannot be beat. Second, the food was really good. We came for Saturday brunch. I had fried shrimp and fried oysters with a salad, my husband had the chicken and waffles, and our toddler had the kid's burger (which is a surprisingly huge portion for the $4.00 price). All were tasty and something we would order again. Third, the service we received was good overall. Our waitress was very very good. Friendly, helpful and attentive. On the other hand, the kitchen was slow to bring out my side salad, and the bar was slow to send out our first round of beverages. But our waitress noticed and addressed the issues appropriately. Mixed berries for waffle contained only blueberries. When pointed out to waiter, was brought strawberries and all moldy blackberries. Have ordered versions of eggs Benedict here today and in the past and for the life of me cannot get a soft runny egg, always comes out hard boiled. I have a very biased opinion due to my shellfish allergy, but I give everything a shot. The decor on the outside of the restaurant really needs updating and cleaning would be nice. As far as the food it's pretty standard I personally think that's the best reason to come here is the view. Nothing really slaps me in the face good but I also havent had much that is bad. Overall I give a 3 out of 5 solely based on hit or miss service and length of wait for food. My niece loves this place so we always go there whenever the family is at Dad's place but there is always something off putting whether it's the noise or the lame food.
