Our waiter was wonderful, however our food wasn't seizing we spent over $70. It was barely seasoned. My shrimp weren't seasoned at all. My husband was very unhappy with the taste of his food. I ordered dessert and had to send it back because it was not good, I tried ordering something else, and it was equally horrible. I heard so many great things about this place but clearly you're paying for a view, and not good food, Will definitely stick to cheddars. I will say that my drink was very good. Worst service ever. After a night of waiting for service (took 45 minutes to even get someone to acknowledge our table), were subjected to a manager on duty that thought it appropriate to threaten a complaining customer (who, after 3 hours and one visit by same manager regarding slow/non-existent service, just wanted to pay their bill and go home) with calling the police them. Did I call him a chicken shit? Yup, because when you are in charge, already have people complaining, and hide in the kitchen instead of making sure the tables are happy or helping out the wait staff yourself, that's exactly what you are. And if you are that threatened by a 50-year-old woman calling you a name, you're actually more than that. read more

Dead Fish Grill out on the lake is pretty sweet. The location for this restaurant gets a ratings bump without a doubt. I've been here a few times and just having the different ambiance than most is great. You are really not going here for the food, more of the idea of eating over the lake. Its a great place for a date, I will say this much. I cannot honestly remember what I have had to eat here over time, I haven't been here in a while for some silly reason either. I know I've had fish here and shrimp and while the food is not something to write home about, it is just fine, not bad, just good. I've been here to have drinks, too. The prices are fair as well. The gumbo was watered down and had about a half a cup of rice. The salad contained spinach and a piece of grilled chicken. I ordered it with no tomatoes and it came with no onion and with tomatoes!!??? The service was extremely slow, and our party had to make frequent trips to the bar for drinks. When last call was announced, the service personnel were no where to be found AGAIN! This was the second time we ate dinner there and were once again disappointed. Overpriced sub-par food and horrible service. We will not be eating there again, and neither will our friends. Despite the mixed reviews we decided to make the 40 minute drive from Jarrell to try this place out based on a friend's recommendation. It was after 8 so we were concerned that we wouldn't make it before they closed, so we called ahead and asked when the kitchen would be serving until. The person on the phone assured us that the kitchen would be taking orders until 10, so we immediately started the drive up. We arrived at 9:30 and the hostess very snarkily informed us that they closed *2 minutes* ago and that there was *no* way they could seat us. We explained that we had called ahead due to the long drive and she basically told us too bad and walked away without further comment. Thank you for a waste of our night, we will not be coming back. The food isn't great maybe not even good. The service is mediocre at best. The view is only amazing if you've never been outside Bell County- but it is nice at sunset. Went with a large group which this place probably isn't used to. I saw that most tables were parties of 2-4. I never got a refill on my water during our dinner. We probably won't go back. Husband ordered the Southern Platter I ordered the Cod & Chips both were barely edible. The Sampler Appetizer was ok and the brownie a la mode dessert was ok. We live on the lake and frequent DFG since it is close. We have never had bad food here, and it surprises me that people have had bad experiences with the food. It is a tad pricey, and some entrees seem a little lackluster for the dollars. The atmosphere is the biggest draw for this restaurant, especially with live music and nice lake views. The service always seems off. Our last visit included a waiter who was very confused and seemed to have his head in the clouds. Some of the waitstaff seem a little uptight. The canon, ohhhh the canon. I think its cool that they fire the canon at sunset, HOWEVER, they really need a sign or something to warn people. This guy walked outside and said like two words very quickly before immediately firing it, and we had no idea what was coming. We were sitting right next to it and it destroyed my ears, not to mention scared the hell out of my husband and I, both veterans. My ears rang for hours afterwards and bothered me for days... and I already have previous hearing damage. I think there is definitely room for improvement, but we have never had a "bad" time here. Had I written this a year and a half ago, I would have rated this place very low, but they have since improved their food by leaps and bounds. Recently tried the grilled 8oz sirloin and lobster tail and it was amazing. The deck area is wonderful during the summer, and they have plastic drapes to block the cold during the cooler months supported by an outdoor fire place. It's a great place to go! read more

NEVER AGAIN! The food is OK. Usually the service is good, but this trip was an indication of how they really feel about their customers. I will never eat there again. This restaurant has lovely views of the lake. But what is the point of a nice view if a customer is not treated well? My friend and I regularly eat lunch together, making it out to Dead Fish about once a month. She always orders the same thing off the lunch menu - a fish poorboy and a salad. The price is $9. Today she ordered the same lunch POINTING AT THE LUNCH MENU so the waitress, who seemed new, would know what was being ordered. When the ticket arrived, we discovered my friend had been charged $18 - as if she had ordered the items separately. After calling the error to the waitress' attention we waited (as she went to talk to her manager). We waited and waited and waited. She never came back. So we went up to talk to the manager who said, "Well, she's new." There was NO OFFER to make the customer whole. We told him they had lost two good customers. "Oh, well," he replied. So, if you want good customer service GO ANYWHERE ELSE. I am so disappointed. I am shocked and insulted. DO NOT GO HERE! The food is only OK. Go to Megg's in Temple. Go to Miller's BBQ. Go to Al's Barn in Temple (they have a great catfish buffet on Friday THAT isn't $18). read more

Went there for the first time this last Sunday 11/6... they have a Sunday brunch. It was some of the worst food I have ever experienced at a restaurant! I had Eggs Benedict on Crab Cakes. What a mistake! Crab cakes were mushy pre-prepared stringy extreme low grade crab meat. The poached eggs were cold and the hollandaise sauce was low on flavor (packaged-processed sauce?), and cold as the eggs. My wife had shrimp and grits... it was barely acceptable. Over seasoned with Cajun seasoning on top. Sauce was not a shrimp-fish based sauce... the seasoning on top covered the bland flavor. Pitiful stuff. I am sure if you order a hamburger, chicken fried steak etc... the food might be just acceptable? Service from staff was good! Poor staff works hard... but must push bad food from a cook who needs to go to Chef's School!! It's expensive Grade C food. Plan on shelling out more than usual $$'s for a pretty lake view. My fiancé and I were dying for somewhere to go that was local and good on our way back from San Antonio to Dallas. This is your best bet in the Belton area, or anywhere in a 20 mile radius, for that matter. The view is great, it's nice to be able to stop and sit by a lake after hours on 35. The food is nothing spectacular, which is why I kept my stars at 3. I had the fish tacos which were...eh. And my fiancé had the fried catfish which he said was, "uh, good, I guess?". Ha. We both enjoyed the french-fries more than the meal, but that shouldn't steer you away. It's a great oasis and rest from the road for sure! read more

This place had just gone down. We went for lunch, ordered the calamari and cheese sticks. The calamari had no flavor what so ever. Then we ordered the CFS , BLT and seafood gumbo. The CFS was literally falling apart and had no flavor except for the taste of oil. The gumbo was literally slimy. To top it off the service was very slow and not attentive at all. I've become so disappointed in Dead Fish. A few years ago, the food was great. Then, they must've changed management or felt the need to cut food costs because that has all changed. It began with the replacement of the waffle fries and continued to decline from there. Some of the same dishes, the fish and chips, and philly, for example, are now just bland and cheap imitations of what they once were. The view is the only true redeeming quality this restaurant has. Come for drinks and a sunset. Leave it at that. It is so very sad that a nice birthday dinner turned into a frustrating evening. Our server started out friendly and attentive but service became frustratingly slow and ended with non-existent. We were informed the restaurant was out of some of the items our party ordered. Understandable, but the method used was unheard of and we were not told until approximately 30 minutes AFTER the order was placed. Then an hour later when our food arrives if was lukewarm, over cooked and I was told the restaurant was out of the side I ordered so the kitchen substituted a side for me. It would have been nice to have been given an option. We had a moderately sized group, nothing too overwhelming for our server but i know at least one item that was ordered did not arrive on the table at all. When the person asked about the item the server asked "So, did you still want that?" ?? They said yes but the item still never arrived. After being served our server did not check on us at all, we never received a refill of water even when we asked, repeatedly. Several of our group had to go to the bar to get drinks. When last call was announced we were unable to locate our server. The icing on the cake was the inaccuracy of our checks. We enjoy the view, the appetizers are great but for a dinner experience I would not recommend this place. Fine dining is lovely but I'm very glad that the menu at Dead Fish Grill is more affordable. I haven't been for lunch but a friend told me that the lunch prices were HALF of what they used to be. But let's get to the Food It was some of the BEST FOOD. I had the Pork Chop talk about a meal could not finish it so tender and flavorful 16 oz and the price hello $16.00. Dead Fish Grill, Known for its Hit or Miss service and Food. Welcome to today's Miss Review. If you read previous reviews you'll see when it's a hit Im happy to say so. But this time, as it has been in the past DFG did not disappoint......well actually it did disappoint us, which was expected, so not a disappointment. A group had the entire outside reserved, so the night started off as the outside view and atmosphere is the best part of DFG. We had to wait 22 min for a table due to only 50% seating even available. Seated and greeted immediately by a pleasant wait person, Olivea was nice, genuine, attentive and accurate.... in the beginning. She also had the responsibility for a large party and that caused other patrons (us) to be second place in the service game after the appetizer and main course order was placed. Drinks and oyster appitize were served quickly, thank you. Though that they were at our table was a surprize to Olivia.... that was a trend... The dinner order was placed, Citrus Mahi Mahi, with cilantro-lime sauce, rice, fresh asparagus and Creole Whiskey Steak with sauteed onions, mushrooms, creole whiskey sauce, mashed potatoes, fresh asparagus. And so, we waited on being served.....and waited, watched three other couples be seated, order, and SERVED apps...Getting Olivia's attention and asking about dinner quickly put her in action to see what was up... She came back and said she apologized for the delay, we would be served shorty.. So we waited, and waited, watched three other couples SERVED thier main course. Again we got Olivia's attention and asking about dinner, which was responsed with "They did not bring it?" see a trend? To her credit, she immediately went to the kitchen, returning after about 5 min with our plates " I found them, they were waiting on the asparagus" Hmm this doesn't bode well... she served and said she would be back in a min to see how it was... We had asked for the asparagus to be very lightly sauteed, not over cooked, not mushy. First sight and impression, the plating was sloped on, the asparagus was limp,,,no actually mushy LOOKING, and felt tasted worse. All plated food items AND the plate were the exact same temp, lukewarm. The Citrus Mahi Mahi, with cilantro-lime sauce.was served WITHOUT the cilantro-lime sauce. Something not one of the three folks that handle the plate noticed, and the Mahi Mahi, was mostly tasteless, DRY as in almost no moisture and well over cooked. Creole Whiskey Steak was ordered and cooked medium, and served that way thank you, however, taste was all over the place, meat was over seasoned to under seasoned to ok seasoned. Though again, all items from plate to food items were lukewarm and asparagus was mushy appeared to be plated . Olivia's attention was gotten and she came over to ask how dinner was....I explained what he had in front of us, she was pleasent, disappointed the food was soo bad and surprised the Citrus Mahi Mahi, with cilantro-lime sauce.was served WITHOUT the cilantro-lime sauce. She took the plate and said she would "take care of it" offered to have it remade, but after waiitng 55 min the first time for a meal that literally take minutes to make...we were not interested. This was a pleasent conversation, I was not mad, just disappointed. I did ask for a Manager.. not wanting anything for this meal or ticket, but just to make him aware if the concerns. This is what I would want to know. Olivia returned some time later, with a adjusted bill she had the unpleasant Citrus Mahi Mahi, with cilantro-lime sauce.was served WITHOUT the cilantro-lime sauce credited back and the asparagus as well. I was satisfied, as that's all I had wanted, the food uneatable to not be charged for. The manager was asked to come over. Maurice was pleasent, professional and concerned. He acknowledged our concerns and commented it was a problem.. hit or miss service and or food quality. Maurice said he wanted to improve. Like previous DFG managers we have spoken to it seemed genuinely and I appreciate that. Maurice took the bill and said he was off to see what happened. He returned soon with the the bill and a gift card, though no discussion or explanation of what happened to our meal.. While I appreciate the gift card, it's worth is in $25 of DFG food and service...which could be outstanding food and service as we have had several times or well, other food and service which we have had as well. Of note, Olivia was tipped 20% on the FULL pre discounted bill...as that was only fair for the most part... The food quality and the distractions put upon her, as well as a system set for failure were not her fault. Will we be back? perhaps... Went with a couple friends, had to 1)flag down a random waitress for service 2) get our own drinks from the bar 3) get our own silverware. Then my friend had TRASH in the bottom of his drink. So my first time here, my expectations were low... Yet somehow I was still let down. Sat on the patio, view was less than stellar, the echo of people makes you feel as if your in a kinder care, or shopping mall.. Other tables conversations are clear as day, the menu is all fried and over priced. ( however the light fir menu sounded appealing, however it's only for lunch lol) decided on drinks and chips and salsa instead then just bite the bullet and to head to Austin for dinner. Salsa was awful, running like literal water, went for top shelf on drinks, again awful ! Watered down margarita for $11 . Staff was great, that was the only saving grace, again however we won't be returning. This used to be my family's favorite spot in Belton to eat because it had a beautiful view, nice staff, and good food. Now I would give in no stars if I could. Came in a little over an hour before close and the host was nice and sat us. Couple minutes later our waitress I think Marissa came to greet us and get our drinks. Everything was fine until it took 15 minutes to come back to get our food order, 45 minutes to get our food when we were the only people waiting on food, and another 15 minutes wondering where our waitress was to get a box and a check. Had to get another server to go and find ours. By the time the food had arrived it was room temperature which means it had just been sitting out and all through our dinner our drinks were empty. We ended up being the last people in the restaurant, not because we took long to eat, but because everything took forever. $100 for 4 people for cold, not very tasteful food. I will not be going back again, even if it has a great view. I even looked into doing a wedding here, but I will look elsewhere. read more

The food is okay, no better. Steaks are ALWAYS over cooked, so ask for it at least one step more rare than you really want. Drinks are watered down. The service SUCKS. The only reason I would go back is I like to sit out on the lake at sunset, it's the nicest view I've found since moving to Texas. And the live music Friday and Saturday nights.
