Heard great things about DeadHorse Hill. Went there on a Sunday. However, my wife and I were quite disappointed. Environment was interesting. Service was good. To me, menu was limited with very few choices. We had the Caesar Salad for two. It was ok but pretty small and light on the dressing. My wife had a chicken dish - nothing great. I had the salmon plate. Salmon was delivered slightly warm, NOT HOT. I ate it anyway but did not enjoy it the way I should have. Issues to be aware of: - Parking is very difficult and expensive. - limited menu choices. Need a few more. Kudos the to bartender. I had the best Negroni cocktail I have had in years. Caesar salad was some greens with a few drops of lemon juice and a few microscopic slices of cheese. Sandwiches were OK but nothing out of the ordinary. My wife and I tried Deadhorse Hill for lunch. We heard some strong reviews and as customers of the previous restaurant in that location, we were curious to try it out. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by a long, discombobulated line of patrons ordering food to dine-in, take-out and making coffee orders. It was unclear if we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait for a host. We then noticed that all food/drink orders are placed at the front counter and then the food is brought to wherever you choose to sit. It seemed disorganized and a poorly designed idea as wait staff needs to continuously elbow through the line with trays in hand to get the food to the dining room area. When you finally get to the register and place your order, the payment is set up in a way on a tablet that literally forces you to tip the service staff (you get a choice from 15% up). Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with gratuity and always leave a generous tip, but in the case of Deadhorse Hill, you literally never see any wait staff, other than when they carry your food 6 feet from the kitchen to your table. There wasn't even silverware provided and nobody checked on how we liked our food until we were on our way out. I would classify these staff as food runners and not waitstaff. As a vegetarian, I literally had one option - the Spicy Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich which sounded good from the description (chickpea, eggplant, mixed herbs). However, for $10, I was disappointed to discover that the sandwich was mainly a large piece of bread with a single thinly-sliced piece of eggplant, a little portion of herbs and literally about 8 chickpeas on it. The sandwich tasted okay, but it was definitely not very filling. My wife ordered the $15 Fried Soft Shell Crab Po'boy which was a fried soft shell crab and a mound of coleslaw on top of a beat-up, over-buttered, communion-sized sesame bun. It appeared to have tasted as bad as it looked judging by my wife's shoulder shrug when I asked her how she liked it. Both of our dishes came with like 5 or 6 overcooked house-made potato chips. I really wanted to like this place and maybe just expected better by the reviews on Yelp and in the Worstever Magazine. I mean I get that the spot is new, and designed to look trendy and hip, and the transplanted staff are all wearing Worcester Wares gear in an attempt to give a local feel. I can see how this sort of thing can get some buzz at first. But there is just such a value-deficit when it comes to the end product. When did it become okay to charge $5.00 for iced coffee (regardless of its temperature when brewed)? At last, after three busy months, I picked up the phone and called in the reservation. A close friend from Manhattan was visiting for the weekend. It was time to show them what Worcester is all about; how far we've come and the direction we are heading. In short, it was time to dine at Deadhorse Hill. We entered around 8:00PM on a Saturday evening. Our reservation was for 8:30. We were greeted by Mr. Sean Woods, one of the owners of the establishment. This to me, speaks volumes. To be sincerely greeted by the owner is such a strong start to any evening. It shows that they are truly invested in the success and active well being of their restaurant. We chatted for a bit and then were seated in the small cafe for a glass of wine while our dinner table was being prepared. The server in the cafe section was both knowledgeable and articulate regarding the wine selection. She brought over two whites and a rose for us to sample, accurately detailing the flavor profiles. While we choose to stick with wine for the evening I will say that the cocktail menu is definitely something I wish to explore in the future. We were seated promptly at 8:30 for dinner. Our server, Carlos, was genuine, enthusiastic, and intelligent. He brought us freshly baked bread from my favorite bakery in Worcester, Crust, accompanied by a house made butter. The sourdough was moist and warm, and the lightly salted butter was superb. Already impressed by the table bread, I was enthusiastic to begin the tour of the menu. I really enjoyed how small the menu was. It is not this elaborate 'Ulysses' type book that other places (Sole Proprietor) drop in your lap and you struggle to hold without knocking your drink off the table. This was a simple, crisp printed page. A subtle font and well written descriptions. To me, this shows that the restaurant isn't trying to do to much, or to please everyone. It's doing its own thing, and has the confidence to say yes, we have a small menu of supreme quality, and we stand behind it one hundred percent. Another farm-to-table culinary experience, Deadhorse Hill shines bright in the Worcester restaurant world. The dishes are experiences, each finely curated and balanced. Please know this going in. You go for a real experience, a real exploration of flavor and quality. It pains me to see reviews that condemn the place on account of the portions not being huge... Please kindly escort your date to the local Pub 99 or Outback if portion is your concern. You can then spend the rest of the evening finishing that illuminating article in reader's digest in the wash room... To start we had a half dozen of the 'little grizzly oysters'. They were delicious, not too briny, or salty, as they are raised in a freshwater estuary. The garnishes of cream, onion, and crackers was nothing to write home about, but I will say that the oyster itself was quality. I am old school with lemon, horseradish, and cocktail sauce, so this struck me as a bit bland. The crispy spaetzle followed the oysters, along with a glass of rose (2015 mourvedre, grenache, counoise, the withers, rose el dorado, sierra foothills CA). The mustard, sweet corn, and creme fraiche were on another level! This dish is phenomenal. It is just the right heat, with a slight crispiness of savory seduction. I really was impressed. The fois gras royale comes in a small glass almost looking like a parfait. The fresh blueberries and shaved truffle garnish this yet, as can often be the case with truffles, they did not overpower the taste of the duck. We spread this on a toasted brioche bread, even asking for more so as to consume every possible oz. This is a rich dish: buttery, savory, with a sensual fruit finish. Superb with a vintage champagne or chardonnay. The dish to take home the prize however, was the 21 day-aged duck breast. I attached a picture for reference. The tender breast truly was perfection; the flavor and texture created a piece of meat that just melted in your mouth. Together with the burnt eggplant ,golden beets, and chickpeas, this dish is a force to be reckoned with! With a cappuccino to finish, we concluded our experience. And what an experience it was! Started with southern fried chicken in hot sauce with honey done to perfection. Main course , I had house made rigatoni with rock shrimp capers and roasted peanuts and a salt fish (not sardines) in a seafood broth with lemon. Absolutely awesome. I really wanted to love this place, but I don't. I've been here twice and the first visit was a 5 star experience while the second was 3 at best. The good: They did a fantastic job renovating the space. This is one of the most beautiful restaurants in Worcester. The cocktails are the best in the city and the fried chicken is incredible, if a tad spendy. The homemade bread and butter is a simple delight. It's also cool that the staff uniforms consist of various Worcester t-shits. The not so good: The food is inconsistent. I've had 6 different dishes here and half of them weren't very good. Szechuan-style fried fish sounds great, but was basically a lightly fried piece of white fish served on a bed of tomato salad with a few peppercorns scattered on top. I couldn't find any evidence of the advertised chili oil, there wasn't even a hint of spice. Mexican street corn tastes good, but $10 for a fairly small ear of corn with mayonnaise and cheese on it is a bit much in Worcester. Nothing here is bad, but this is one of the most expensive restaurants in town and I think it's fair to expect some consistency. deadhorse hill is a good, but not yet great restaurant. It's not the kind of place where I can come in and feel comfortable ordering anything on the menu knowing that they will execute it well. read more

Dinner adventure started with "Gun Fight in Stockholm" cocktail featuring mezcal (excellent), accompanying warm olives & feta (excellent), followed by black bass head & collar (odd & excellent). Next up was a striped bass dish for my date and a pork loin entree for your reviewer. Both were flavorful, fresh and really well-prepared (almost excellent). Our servers were friendly and knowledgeable. We racked up a pretty big bill by adding a nice bottle of wine to the evening, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Definitely an interesting new hipster restaurant. We came for a drink and two appetizers to kill some time and were surprised how different the space looked. It was hard to believe that Deadhorse Hill was once Ritual. The owners did a great job flipping the place and making it look very inviting. We shared the boiled Valencia peanuts which were kind of weird. They recommend eating the peanuts with the shell, my boyfriend and I preferred it without. We also had the foie gras royale which was delicious! I'm not a fan of foie gras, but the foie gras mixture they had was very buttery and had a very nice and subtle flavor. The bread they gave you to go with it was also fluffy and worked well with the foie gras. The bartender was awesome! I think his name was Derrick? but he was very knowledgeable and was very pleasant to talk to. The recommended Cold Harbor IPA was delicious and he made me a great drink based on what I typically like ( light liquor, tart, and elderflower is a must ) Overall the atmosphere is very laid back. People sitting at the bar are more than happy to converse with you and crack a joke. Everyone was pleasant and we enjoyed our short stay. I've had two experiences at Deadhorse Hill now, one pre-covid, and both have been great. The first time I came, my boyfriend and I had a great date night here-- cocktails, split entrees, and great service. Such yummy food. I also recently did takeout, pumpkin risotto + margarita, and that was fantastic as well, the takeout process was easy, quick, friendly, and the portions were great, which I find that restaurants sometimes skimp on for takeout. The hostess greeted us then become entrenched looking a her computer screen, we started to feel uncomfortable, like does she remember we were standing there? We waited another 10 minutes for our cocktails. Mine came first as in not together. Since when don't the tables cocktails come together. Makes it difficult to cheers a long week . Anybody know a dirty Martini? Mine was so dirty it looked like swamp water. Not cold as I requested and "rocks " on the side......ice cubes, not the dirty ice. Let our server know and she took the drink back for a do-over. 5 minutes later my husbands drink arrived. Great taste... he really enjoyed. It took awhile for my do-over to arrive. I got a cocktail. Although it was good, it was literally 4oz. and cost $12. My boyfriend got a beer. They served fresh bread with homemade butter that was great. We shared the scallops and pork belly (we had some bony bites) plates. Both were very good, but again pricey. With tip our meal was just over $100. What a gem in the middle of Worcester! My husband and I had been wanting to try the Deadhorse Hill Cafe for awhile. My expectations were high and yes, they were met! The staff, first of all, was very friendly and very helpful. We ordered the smoked berries and oh....my....gosh....I think our lives were changed after the first bite. We also ordered the scallops. They were served with peaches and it was honestly some of the best scallops I've had. The presentation of the meal was beautiful. There is a nice bar area where you can enjoy drinks and there is also a little coffee area where you can enjoy some espresso. I really appreciate the farm to table concept. We had the $110.00 ribeye and the spinalis dorsi (the very best part of the steak) was burnt to a crisp in a medium rare cut. The bone, however, was fantastic. The meat was good, but not a hundred bucks good. The apps - sausage, duck, etc. - came with a LOT of filler. The sausage was $16.00 (I think) and had maybe 1/2 a sausage in there with bread and veggies galore. You kinda had to hunt for it. We ordered the octopus salad which was cooked perfectly (not overcooked/chewy thank goodness!) and was a pretty good size portion for a starter. All of the ingredients really complimented each other and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. My fiancé got the pan roasted chicken, which normally.. chicken is hardly ever a dish we order ANYWHERE cause... it's just basic. But wowwwwww he really loved the dish. Light crispy skin, with polenta underneath (a little more dense then we're use to, but still good). I got the rigatoni with the home made ricotta and it was also delicious. Honestly, when I'm dining in Worcester my expectations aren't super high (we dine in Boston a lot), but I was pleasantly surprised and will definiteIy put this as one of my top places in Worcester. Start off with Mem Tea (Cambridge) and Tandem (Portland ME) and Chocolate Babka and some crazy good French muffin sort of thing, filled with a caramelized sugar cube (forgot the name but gee wiz, what the heck..pure ambrosia). Then move on to the house cured salmon found in my omelette and sitting atop Grammy's eggs benny. HOLY COW, salty good. The house made jams topped my super delish home made English Muffin. I've been to Deadhorse Hill many times and have always loved my experience. It's usually my go-to for my birthday dinners and for brunch with friends. The staff are always very nice and professional and the food is always lovely! Their menu changes (based on what is locally available) but they seem to always have their fried chicken on the menu and it is PERFECT! I'm literally drooling right now... anyways, I love it at DHH. Their brunch is fantastic and I highly enjoy their Benedict with avocado and their caramel coconut latte. You can make reservations online through Resy. I usually find parking on the street (be prepared to pay a meter) or there is a parking garage (a bit of a walk) nearby. Main Street is getting a facelift so the street has been a bit tricky to park on but worth it! I can't wait for my next meal at Deadhorse Hill! read more

On first impression I thought this place wasn't going to be good. The menu was small and the choices were a bit fancy for my pallet. I ended up getting Allagash white beer which was very similar to blue moon and for my meal I got a burger and fries. The burger was amazing, it's a 1/2 lb burger with bacon, the bacon was delicious, one of the best burgers I've ever had, the fries were large enough to share, very good fries. My friend had the filet mignon, it came served over mashed potatoes, he said it was one of the best steaks he ever had. I asked for a coke to wash the food down and they had bottled coke on hand. I'm very frugal so the prices were a bit off putting, but I can without a doubt say the food was actually worth the price of admission. Highly recommend the burger, fries, and the filet mignon. We went in to celebrate...something...really I think we just had to invent an excuse to treat ourselves to the fabled 'Horse Feast'. This option specifically is what I am reviewing. This was $85/pp, and there's an optional $35 drink pairing which we didn't go for (but we will next time). What did we get out of the horse feast? Well if you're dreaming of hearty grains, fresh sundried alfalfa, and chunks of apple you're out of luck. What we got for our money was almost two hours of gastronomic adventure. That's right, for almost two hours we were treated to one course after another, prepared to order, going from light and fresh to pasta, to incredible houe-aged meats, and finishing with two remarkable desserts that you are damnwell gonna find some room for once you see them! There was almost too much to describe happening here, but I'll tell you the highlights: We started with a couple of oysters, followed promptly by super-fresh buffalo cheese in cold pea-broth. A course or two later, they served us some Gravlax. I'm Swedish, and I'll telly you right now if you're going to do cured fish, do it right or prepare for the consequences.
