This is a great neighborhood joint that would get an even higher rating if they had heavier silverware and better service -- the service is almost always a problem here, which suggests poor management, in hiring or training or customer feedback. The service is by turns ingratiatingly phony and pretentious, with undertones of hostility, followed by complete neglect. Your water will not be refilled, you will not be asked if you want more bread, and you will be shoved a check with a cursory ask if you want dessert. More wine? Maybe, but no one asked...When you drop $100 for a meal (entrees, starters, wine), you expect a lot more. And silverware that feels like a Chinese all you can eat buffet or college cafeteria -- thin, light, and small? Nothing nice about that. You have to ask for napkins. And the interior is now in need of a refresh and repaint. And the Frank Sinatra and jazz mix is often too loud and played out. They stopped those tasty little mint balls with the bill years ago; too bad, they were fantastic! Ok; that's the bad. Here's the good. Decent wines to complement the entrees, if a bit pricey. Decent interpretation of classics, like eggplant or chicken parmigiana, which is honestly impossible to find in the Midwest outside of Chicago or a chain. One of the best pizzas in town. Excellent salads, and you can split a starter salad and it will be plated separately. A good breadbasket with roasted garlic and olive oil is complementary-- add a sprinkle of salt if your diet permits. it's very family friendly, with high chairs, great kids menu; you can expect there may be some kids, so go later if you want a more grown up meal. Daily specials Mon-Thurs are really good, and so is the lunch special. Rotating specialty items. We come here regularly, and would visit frequently if the things mentioned above got fixed. It is not currently on my Best Restaurants in town list, where I take out of town guests or business meals, or recommend to visitors, but it could be. There were only two tables of customers when I arrived, yet I waited by the door for about 8 minutes before any of the wait staff noticed me and showed me to a table. I love DiAngelo's food, especially their Caesar salad, pesto pasta and calzones. Seriously their salad is amazing, and I don't even like salad. However, their wait staff is hit or miss. Some are good and others are really terrible. My wife is a diabetic and we were waiting an exceptionally long time for our food one evening. About 40 minutes into a he wait she started feeling shaky, a sign that her blood sugar was dropping dangerously low. After flagging down our waiter, he offered to bring her a grilled chicken breast "real quick". It didn't arrive for another 12 minutes, right behind the rest of our food. Then they charged us $6.00 for it as an add-on. After complaining about the long wait and sad lack of speed to help a diabetic, we received a discount of $5.00. So that was not the best experience. No errors in our order, which included enough details (e.g. some, but not all dressings on the side) that there was the possibility of error. Drink refills were offered, plates promptly cleared, and all that. However, if you order an entree salad, ask when they plan to serve it. Forty minutes after we arrived, and long after my dining companions had been served appetizers, salads, soups (I had ordered none of these, though I had some of a flatbread app), and then their entrees, my entree salad arrived, the absolute last thing served. The restaurant was not particularly busy, though it was filling up. I might have been more assertive a couple of times, as the waitress brought other food, and asked when my food was coming. Service and food were good, but I ordered spaghetti and half of the plate was filled with sauce. My boyfriend and I got the exact same thing, and his plate had a good portion of noodles to sauce, whereas mine looked like it had been half eaten. There were barely any noodles, and they filled the plate with sauce to make up for it. The fact that they gave us our plates at the same time and you could obviously see the huge difference between our plates was ridiculous, and I'm surprised they still gave us the plates. We wanted to celebrate the New Year 2017 by going to a good Italian Restaurant in Bloomington, so we looked up and found DeAngelo:s. It was a mistake...The Wine we ordered, Malbec from Argentina was by the glass and it was one of the worst tasting wines I have ever had...I know many Argentinian wines but they were good with some body and some aroma but this tasted like Vinegar. I think they bought two cheap wines locally and served them as Argentinian wine. The Vegetarian lasagna was more like a slab of Cheese with no layers of anything..it was not a good lasagna to say the least. The Eggplant Parmegna was Ok but was tough and over deep fried. The only thing we felt that was Italian (authentic) was the bread. They give five slices of Italian bread in a basket and they were good. The waitress was friendly and hard working...atmosphere is good but don't go for the food. read more

I had optimism going in because the place came highly recommended. ordered Spaghetti Gamberi (the description reads: "Gulf shrimp sautéed in olive oil with sundried tomatoes, green onions, fresh basil, garlic, lemon and cajun spices, tossed with spaghetti"). Here's what I got: dried-out, hard spaghetti (amounting to about 3/4 of a cup), 3 shrimp, a few bits of tomato, no green onion, no basil, no taste of garlic OR lemon, and virtually no taste of any kind of spice - or flavor for that matter. I cook enough to know that they assembled my plate of food out of separate items - the noodles had obviously been cooked earlier and left uncovered for who knows how long, the other ingredients, what few there were, got thrown in to the cold noodles and stirred around and heated up. This dish was NOT cooked together because there was no infusion of any flavors from one ingredient to the other. It flat-out sucked. I wouldn't feed this to a starving dog. Well, OK, I exaggerate...I would only feed it to a starving dog. And he would not be happy either. read more

My fiance and I went here on a whim; we drove by looking for a place we hadn't been a million times. We decided to give it a try. We were mistaken. The atmosphere and the dress of the waitstaff made us feel like it might be a decent place. When we looked at the menu, we thought things were overpriced, but maybe they'd be delicious. I had the (Homemade) Meat Lasagna, which I think wasn't exactly homemade and I would not qualify as a meat lasagna. For $15, I got a four inch piece of cheese lasagna that was covered in meat and sauce (read: not a meat sauce, but meat and then sauce). It was almost tasteless and was watery. My fiance got the chicken parm, which came with what looked like canned spaghetti and at least twice cooked chicken with the breading falling off. It was completely overpriced and disappointing. When I go out to eat, I want something that is better than what I can make at home with a jar of Ragu sauce. read more

Her salad entrée came out very quickly, while my calzone took so long that I had to flag down the server and ask to have it brought out in a to-go box. I didn't even have time to begin eating it before I had to rush back to my office because I was already late in returning from my (hour-long) lunch break! To add insult to injury, when I was back at work, I opened the box and discovered that the veggies and basil had been put on top of the calzone instead of inside it! Went for lunch with a friend. While waiting for food to arrive the owner of the business arrived and placed a large order. We were told by staff that our food was being put on hold in order to accommodate owners request. We finally got salads and did not get our requested flatbread until after the meal was over. Orders were completed about an hour after being placed and we were on time constraints typical of a lunch break. The owner appeared oblivious to customers need. I am very disappointed in a place that I used to love! My husband and I went in on Thursday for an anniversary lunch. We were very clear with the waiter, repeated it several times about my husband's anaphylactic reaction to shrimp. We made extra certain to ask that anything that touched shrimp be separate from anything that was put on my husband's plate. The waiter assured us with complete certainty that those measures were always taken in their kitchen. A few moments later the waiter came back with my husband's salad. A few moments later the waiter came rushing back and surprised us by snatching my husbands half eaten salad from right in front of him. He apologized profusely and said the the salad might have been contaminated. Really? After making very certain to get our allergy concern across?? Really? My husband tried not no overreact...he went outside to get some fresh air. A few minutes later..he came back in...he'd started breaking out in hives. After paying (yes, they made us pay 40$$$) we went to CVS got Benadryl and called the MD. Fortunately, we didn't need the EpiPen this time. But, for heaven's sake DeAngelo's train your wait and kitchen staff. You're fortunate not to be hearing from my lawyer! People with allergies BEWARE! Hmm. Deangelos. I feel like the place is neither good nor bad exactly...it just kind of is. It's fine. It's just not stellar. The prices are pretty decent...but then again the food is just that:decent. It was mostly underseasoned with EVERYTHING needing salt...and not in that "I'm from Indiana and I therefore salt my plate before tasting anything that isn't already covered in ranch dressing" sort of way...but in a, I honestly don't know if they used any. The pasta was cooked al dente, which I much appreciate, but was either cooked and left to sit too long or was overcrowded in the pot and therefore stuck together in large clumps. The lemon alfredo lacked any lemon flavor and tasted exactly like the fettuccine, but tasted much better after the server brought some lemon wedges to give it a bit more pizazz. The chicken however was cooked well and had decent flavor, as did the shrimp and the mushrooms on the fettuccine. The dessert was good, but again not spectacular. Overall, outside of my desire to support local business and the fact that everyone was incredibly pleasant...the variety and quality is likely a slight bit better at your standard Olive Garden :/ read more

My mistake thinking they had it jarred up or it would be a simple task. She came back with the delivery order for the delivery guy and said the kitchen said it would be a minute. There were five tables in the restaurant with two servers in the dining room. After waiting an additional 20 minutes for marinara sauce I walked back to the kitchen to let her know to cancel it. When I walked back there I realize she was actually ladling the marinara sauce out of a pot. So I guess she was the one who was getting the marinara sauce ready and just made me wait for no apparent reason. I told her if it was going to be any longer I wanted to cancel my order at which time the other servers chimed in how busy they were. Seriously you got two cooks in the kitchen two people waiting on tables and five tables you're busy??? The service at this place is ridiculous and less you have five hours to spare. The hubby & I went there for the first time this past Wednesday for dinner. Turned out to be half price wine night! While sipping our wine, our terrific waiter, Michael, brought good bread & roasted garlic for us to munch on. We ended up just getting a pizza; the Cortona, which was really good. First of all, they take reservations, so take advantage of that. When we went this past Saturday we were informed the wait would be 30-35 minutes, but thankfully we had a reservation so we were taken to our table immediately. The bread you get before meals is good but would be better if they had marinara sauce to dip it in instead of just oil. The food quality is very solid overall. My chicken cesear wrap had very little chicken and had mostly iceberg lettuce. The pizzata calzone was not as expected and was very greasy. Cheese lasagna was just too rich. Prices were moderately high so obviously not worth it. Service was not too bad. I think the worst was the bread with garlic cloves. No butter. Bread was hard as bricks. We've eaten at DeAngelo's many times in the last year, thanks to an introduction with a Groupon and we're big fans. The atmosphere is nice and cozy, service and food are good/great, and the price is right. Definitely better than it's overpriced competitor on the square, Grazie, and they have great specials throughout the week. Also, had the spinach-artichoke dip last night for the first time and it was superb and quite filling--it comes with a small pizza (sans mozzarella) essentially. I'm baffled to see complaints of poor service and it being overpriced, as it really isn't and we've always had good service. Think the most expensive dish on the menu is under $20. read more

We've been to DeAngelos off and on since it open. It's very close to our house and very convenient for a quick dinner when I don't want to cook. We almost always get the same thing. I get a calzone and my husband gets the chicken ravioli in a mushroom cream sauce. I use to be delicious. This time we both ordered the ravioli. It came covered in cheese and baked until the cheese browned, under the cheese was ravioli and on the bottom of the dish were mushrooms. No cream sauce. I hesitated to say anything to the waiter because I hate to complain in a restaurant but half way through our meal I decided to call him over and tell him it was so dry because there was no sauce. He didn't know what to do and then decide to get "extra" sauce from the kitchen. He came back with a bowl of uncooked cream with grainy cheese in it. After about 10 minutes the manger came to our table and asked if there was a problem, we explained the whole thing and he went back to the kitchen to find out what the problems was. When he returned he said everything was OK in the kitchen and asked US what he should do. He didn't offer to do anything. Just kept repeatedly asking US what HE should do. I think the manager of a restaurant should know how to handle a complaint from a repeat customer and shouldn't put the responsibility of a resolution on the customer. He ended up doing nothing. Between the food and the customer service I don't think we'll be back. It's a shame we really did like the chicken ravioli in cream sauce. read more

Our party of four visited DeAngelo's on Saturday, Apr. 28. We'd eaten there before and enjoyed the food but the service has always been slow. This particular night it was worse than slow. We had to wait at least 20 minutes for a table, though I will grant that they were busy, it being prom night. There seemed to be only one person bussing tables, and she wasn't hurrying. When finally seated, our order was taken and we were brought a basket of bread. We soon polished it off and though the waitress returned to fill water glasses, she never once offered to bring us more bread, although during the same period she brought the table next to us not one but two additional baskets of bread! Our entrees, a dinner salad, one small pizza, and two calzones, took 45 minutes to appear, so we finally asked for a refill on the bread.
