Folks on the east side of Bloomington hopefully know how good they have it by having Trailhead Pizzeria nearby. Living on the west side of town, we've got some good places to choose from, but nothing like Trailhead. This pizza is a singular experience. For most of town, when you think of locally owned places, you think of Aver's, Pizza X, and Mother Bears. All great places. HOWEVER.... On the east side.. if you're willing to drive a bit, there is a little chunk of beauty known as Trailhead. Super casual. They seem to do a lot of pick up business. We were on the east side tonight, and I was trying to think of a place to eat that was unique to the east side. Trailhead! We got there around 6, and it was pretty quiet. The server was very nice and attentive. Our meal was simple, a pepperoni pie with a side of cheese bread. I do not have words for how good that cheese bread was. I don't know how or where they slip the garlic in, but they do it in a way that helps the flavors blend beautifully. Everything was hot and wonderfully cheesy in a proper pizza way. The pizza itself was cooked very well, with their amazing crust. I intentionally ordered more than I could eat just so I would have leftovers to look forward to. This place is an easy 5 stars. The interior of the place is nothing special, like I said, super casual. If you are anywhere near the area, check them out. They are just simply so good. Period. They once had a location downtown, which is how I discovered them in the first place. Hoping they try for a second location again sometime so more people can experience this amazing food. read more

Tried to order over the phone, and they refused to honor the prices advertised on their website. I was trying to just order directly to support the business, cause we previously had good experiences there, and was surprised when the bill was $12 more than ordering online would've cost. Asked for an explanation, and an incredibly condescending manager named TJ said that they "use 8oz of less cheese" on online orders, and couldn't give me the prices listed on their own website. I was truly baffled, and rather than helping me out, TJ said "it would take 30 minutes to explain it to you" and told me to either pay what they demanded or cancel my order. Take-out/Delivery customers beware! A super confusing and contradictory system, and anything but complete obedience is met with a bad attitude. Too bad, this place used to be great. I love this place. It makes me feel like I am on vacation and that summer is around the corner or here. The service can be spotty and take a long time (you have been warned). That being said, we have been making it our Friday night regular with another couple. The live music has been awesome (sometimes a little loud for conversation, but we are ok with that). Now, this is what you really need to know. THE RANCH IS SO GOOD. I don't know what the heck they are doing in that kitchen, but it involves dill and results in the best ranch ever. Went for pizza before heading to the lake. Service was not good. I asked 45 minutes in if our breadsticks were ready. The server indicated they only had one oven working and she has been checking. No harm, no foul. After another 5 minutes our breadsticks and pizzas came out and both were not even warm. When she asked how everything was going, I said there is no way these just came out of the oven and she was defensive saying she was working the patio, the dining room, and the other side. Trailhead pizza is far out of town - close to Paynestown SRA and the Pinegrove boat ramp. It would be a great stop after a day at the lake. We went on a Friday night for the live music. The dining room was packed with multigenerational families from babies to grandparents. There are board games available for kids while they waited. We enjoyed our food - cheese sticks, roasted Brussels sprouts, pizza and beer. Our server was wonderful- he was very accommodating about our long winded and complex pizza order and friends that kept showing up late! Pizza was delicious with a chewy bubbly crust. This place is good for where it is... near Paynetown ..campground no expectations here. They either don't have what is listed or the keg "just blew" or Food is always filling but a bit pricey. They do have a pizza special with breadsticks and 2 sodas which is a great deal for $20. There is live music almost every night..which happens to be pretty good most of the time. I have had their meatballs and they are tasty for an appetizer. The service is great if you are the only group. If it gets crowded.. the one server may have trouble keeping up. They seem to do well with the summer crowds. They have many unique kinds of pizza and well worth trying. Parking can be a challenge.. they say you can park across the road 446 at a church. This review is regarding the new Trailhead Pizza location in downtown Bloomington. When I heard about it I was excited! We had lived on the East side and Trailhead was our favorite pizza, but we had just moved out of their delivery area. I would have given the original location 4 or 5 stars-- good pizza, friendly service. Meanwhile, the new location downtown is different, and pretty bad. :( :( We ordered from them on their first night. The pizza took about two hours to get to us and was quite greasy, they didn't include our sauces, and the breadsticks and crust had a weird, frozen taste and texture. (And it was all pretty cold, since it had taken two hours to get to us.) We thought since it was their first night it might just be a mishap, so we ordered again at a later date; the pizza was slightly better, but very greasy, and had that weird frozen taste. We had ordered cinnamon sticks and they were good, with pretty decent icing and without so much of the frozen taste. But none of it really seemed enough to justify the price. Well, we got optimistic, I guess, and decided to order one more time. This time it was just awful! The pizza was extremely, extremely greasy and kind of gross, and it had almost no sauce on it--the little sauce it did have had an odd, sharp taste. The crust still had that chewy, frozen taste and texture, as did the cinnamon sticks, which didn't have a lot of cinnamon-sugar topping on them. The weirdest thing about this meal though was the icing, which was as thin as water and tasted HORRIBLE, like milk that had gone bad. It seemed like they had run out of icing and instead of making more someone had poured a bunch of sour milk and water in what was left and hoped for the best. We didn't eat that at all. We both felt kind of ill after we ate, maybe from all the grease, and had a lot of leftover food we ended up throwing away. After tip, we paid over thirty bucks for a large one-topping pizza and a small order of cinnamon sticks. We could have ordered from a national chain and had significantly better quality and taste for half the price. I honestly wanted my money back, and I really wish I had tried to get it. We waited 10-15 minutes and couldn't even flag anyone down as the other servers wouldn't give us eye contact. We walked out because my kids were hungry and it wasn't a great first impression. Great pizza on the way to the middle of nowhere - or on the way home from the middle of nowhere. I'm frequently out here for outdoor recreation - hiking and boating - and I'm very pleased to have such a great place out here. Last night I got the Cliffhanger, which is their "pie of the month". OMG that was a good pie! I wasn't entirely sure what was on it when I ordered - chicken, bacon, goat cheese, onion, and banana peppers. I think there were a few jalapenos hidden in among the banana peppers, which may have been an accident. Great pizza, great flavor combinations. I called ahead and picked this up on the way to a camp site and shared it with a buddy. They had the pie ready when I got there and it was hot and fresh. Incidentally, they have a bakery that seems to have some chops. I got chocolate brownie surprise cupcakes. I asked "what's the surprise?" and the guy working had no idea, so it was a genuine surprise! It has some chocolate chips, probably multiple flavors of chips and maybe some nuts.
