Charming cocktail bar with some old timey and upscale decor. Walking through the space feels adjacent to walking through a few decades. My boyfriend and I got seated at the very back room which had beautiful velvet couches, chairs, art, and a chandelier. We were seated promptly after showing up with a reservation. We ordered 4 cocktails -- the Battle Annie, Sloe Glow, Pear'd Off, and the Nomadic Old Fashioned. All of the drinks were unique and delicious. I loved how refreshing the Sloe Glow was, definitely my favorite of the night. Drinks are strong and worth the price. Service was also great! All we had to do was push a button and someone always came our way quickly. Fantastic experience in a space that stands out in the NYC landscape. We were greeted at the door by a friendly attendant who helped get us seated at a dark candle lit table for two. Do yourself a favor and skip the many unfounded negative reviews, this is one of the single best cocktail bars I have ever been to. Dear Irving has a speakeasy vibe to it, a funky, dimly lit interior that feels exactly how you want it to. If you can, do yourself a favor and sit at the bar. Watch the bartenders work. Marvel at their brilliance. If it's not too busy, talk with them. Ask questions. They are happy to oblige and will likely educate you and let you try some new concoctions. For us, despite the fact that our slippery glasses caused a spill or two, they couldn't have been friendlier on a busy holiday weekend, replacing our mishaps and offering suggestions for our next drinks. The food is solid for snacking, but you're here for the drinks. The Deacon Blues was so good we actually came later in the night to have it again, as were the Xantolo and Whiskey Business. The interior was really cutely decorated with these hanging bead area separators and some definite mood lighting. Once we were seated at the bar, we got the Latin matrix (a little smokier take on a Paloma but such a pretty drink with a little flower placed into it) and the daiquiri (good and less heavy than a typical daiquiri and also came in a different cup than expected but not bad) The bartender was great and refilled our waters often and the drinks were delicious and strong! read more

It is such a pity, was going to give this place 4 stars, but I just realized they already included gratuity in our check which wasn't clear and we paid an additional tip on top of it. That night, the staff also rushed us out the door, so I didn't realize until much later. As for the actual experience, our group came here on a Friday night slightly past midnight. There was no wait and the bar had lots of open seating. There was very comfortable seating on plush couches. The ambiance was much more quiet and upscale. There was some bustling but it was quiet enough to talk and not shout at each other. As for the drinks, they were quite strong. We stuck with the fruity and sweet drinks. The Royal Hawaiian and Eventide tasted more unique in their flavor combinations, while the Poppy Collins tasted more generic. At $18 per drink, the drinks are definitely on the pricier side. My friends and I love this place! I believe it's the sister bar to raines, another spot we like. It's a little less intimate and more casual, so I like coming here with friends more. The ambiance and atmosphere here is really nice, and has the semi private rooms, similar to raines. The drinks here are great - the bartenders know what they're doing. The menu can be quite overwhelming as there are so many options, but the bartender has great recommendations and he also made us more custom drinks based on what we like. The most recent time I came, my friend and I got the bruschetta like toast with tomato and prosciutto. It was so warm and toasty and paired well with our drinks! We usually are fine without a reservation - we've come every time as a walk in party and didn't have to wait or didn't wait long. Once we were quoted an hour wait, but we actually got called back after 10-15 min, so I wouldn't be turned away by the wait if there is one. Great place for any occasion! The place is non descript on the outside with just an awning that says 55 Irving. Behind the velvet curtain are beautiful cozy spaces and a gorgeous bar. Absolutely love this place! Intimate and sexy vibes, but also good for groups. The lounges are very comfy and semi-private, which I really appreciated. I tried the Xantolo under Spicy and the Eventide under Spring Bloom - the former was very unique and the ladder was more commonplace but tasty nevertheless. We also shared the Smoked Salmon Dip and the Nibble Plate, though I gotta say, their food game is kinda weak and overpriced, and hence the 4-stars. Great service - efficient and not overbearing. The service was cordial and the system of ordering is exactly the same as Raines' Law Room probably because they have the same owners. You touch the doorbell/buzzer on the wall right behind you and your server will come to take your order. Negroni - what is a negroni? The most bitter tasting cocktail of your life. But also what is a negroni? Can be a very delightful drink if you pair it well with food. Cafe Rina - I was sort of indecisive between the Split Second which was described to me by the server as very banana forward and on the sweeter side of things. So, I went with Cafe Rina. The minty-ness of the drink is through out almost like a mojito but slightly less mint feel. The rum also was prevalent. I didn't taste too much of the coffee nor the cachaca. A very polite gentleman out front checks you in. We got two seat at the bar at 8pm on a Friday. Dark, cozy vibe. Very romantic, nice spot for dates 1-3. Solid drink selection -- when they say they have something for everyone they mean it. Pure class all the way. Not a sticky floor space or table in sight. Watching the bartenders work their magic is such a pleasure. This is the type of place you go to when you are done with the loud thumping music and drunken nights of your 20s and early 30s but you still want to go out have a great cocktail in a relaxed space where you can hear the person you are sitting next to speak. We got two drinks. First up was hubby's Midlife crisis. Total hit. Exact quote: "wow that's a whiskey cocktail for a whiskey lover". Next up is my Bohemian avenue: what a drink. Floral but not too flowery. Sweet but not too sweet. Just light and refreshing. There's lemon and mint and cucumber but none of that is overpowering these guys get what it means to make a drink with balanced flavor profiles. We only mentioned in passing it was my husbands birthday week and they immediately brought out some bubbly on the house. 100% awesome. We made a reservation for Dear Irving for 9:45 and were promptly seated. The seats were super comfortable and velvety and I loved that there was a little call light to ask the attendant to come. Service was prompt and polite. I ordered the sloe gloe based on the waitress' recommendation, which was a gin based drink with egg white. Surprisingly, it tasted like a super refreshing watermelon. It was hard to detect the alcohol in it and it was super easy to drink. My companion ordered the Spy drink and equally liked it as well. So i decided to come back later and try it on a weekday. Made reservations on resy for monday. Was able to get it on the same day. Our table was ready exactly when on time. The host got us seated inside the far end of the lounge. We got a nice corner seat. The vibe of the place was fantastic. The overall interior is just very upscale and venetian like. Very nice date spot. Turns out inspiration for the design was taken from Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris". For cocktails, we got Glasgow Kiss - A woody scotch cocktail with a tad bit of bitterness. Personally, as a whiskey fan I loved it. My wife didn't like it though. Pan American Crush - Very refreshing drink with cilantro and lemon. Eventide - Probably the crowd favorite drink. Right amount of notes from strawberry and peach Wagyu Slider - Beautifully cooked wagyu with very soft buns. Definitely a favorite. Two sliders per order. It's dark with some romantic flairs that mimic Raines but at the end of the day, Raines is still Raines. If you want romance, go to Raines. The front section of the bar (for parties of 2) is a bit loud. Granted I did not have to yell but I felt like I had to exert more energy and volume. Unideal. If you're trying to build up canoodling vibes, it's tough to have to talk louder. However if you already know each other, don't need to talk that much, and just want to muah muah maybe the loud chitchats are conducive so it's not so blatantly obvious that some action is going on. This place was awesome, it's a classic speakeasy, it's been around for a few years now but I only made my first trip last night and I was super impressed. I really loved the decor, the leather sofas and the overall atmosphere, this is definitely a cool casual place to hangout for drinks but also a nice place for a date. The bar had a thermal check at the front entrance and all the tables were spaced out with some tables having plastic partitions separating tables from one another. I went on a Monday, it didn't reach the the 50% capacity but it had enough people there to make it intimate while not desolate. The food: Whisky Business- Rittenhouse rye, ancho reyes, lemon, cinnamon, angostura bitters. This drink was so expertly crafted, it was so well balanced, everything really had their own notes and not one element overpowered the other. It was an excellent drink, I really enjoyed how the beverage started out on the sweet side then finished nicely with the Whisky flavor. Croque Mr. Irving- Grilled Ham & Cheese with Truffle Béchamel. This was delicious. It's basically a fancy ham and cheese open faced sandwich but it was awesome. I enjoyed everything about it but I really liked the truffle bechamel. Overall, it is an item to order but I did wish the bread was a bit more toasted. Smoked Salmon Dip- Everything Topping, Country Toast. I really enjoyed the flavor of the salmon dip but I did find the bread to be a tad salty with the everything bagel seasoning. But in their defense, I always find everything bagel seasoning to be too salty for me. This also could use a bit more toasting on the bread. read more

We were greeted at the door by a host who took us to our booth in the back. The room was beautiful. The style was very baroque-esque and the chandelier/ceiling really pulled the room together. It was romantic, yet approachable. After being seated, the host asked if we wanted to start with any water and asked "regular or sparkling?" I asked for sparkling. I felt a little duped when he came back out with a $15 bottle of Perrier that he poured for me. Maybe I should have expected this in NY, but I guess I'm just not used to that. I don't mind spending extra on things, but I hate deception or feeling like I'm being tricked into spending more... it feels slimy. These have been tough times on the service industry, so I'm happy to support it, but I do think that being more forward with patrons is preferable. After getting our expensive water, we waited... Finally someone came over and asked us if we were going to order drinks. We explained that we had been waiting a long time and were very ready to order. She asked if we had pushed the button. We were unaware that there was a button to press for service and thus had just been waiting for service. Not a big deal, but definitely a friendly reminder that it would be super helpful to have that explained by the host when we're seated. I feel like this review seems super negative so far, but I definitely want to emphasize that despite all the above, this was still a really good experience. Our server was SO friendly and helpful. I ordered the Sister City (macchu pisco, rosé wine, giffard passionfruit, grapefruit, perrier sparkling water, hibiscus), but also got to taste my friends' drinks, the Pearl Collins (fords gin, lemon, jasmine, cocchi americano, mint, perrier sparkling water) and the Tropic Tilt (novo fogo chameleon cachaça, papaya, amaro montenegro, lime, cinnamon). The gin, grapefruit, and rose cava were the perfect combination for a refreshing, yet delicious, summer cocktail. Drinks are a bit pricier than perhaps your local spot, but incredibly worth it. The space itself is quite nice. We sat in the front room, so didn't see the rest of the bar. But there are dividers between the tables, which facilitates privacy, and there are call buttons that indicate to your server when you are ready to order. The servers do a great job of coming to your table minimally, but promptly as soon as they notice you may be ready for another round.
