I had never thought about joining a YMCA until I worked 300 meters away. This location is dear to me because of the ATC Decatur Dekalb 4 Miler that used to start/end here for the longest time. Even though I still have my LA Fitness Membership, I joined here about a year ago due to proximity to work and the ease of getting a workout in before or after work. I'm now glad I did that because I use their nationwide membership for working out of town. Unique features: - Second floor has all their treadmills facing towards the interestingly designed windows - New cardio equipment throughout the top floor - Peloton bikes Things you might not like: - Second floor free weight area can feel cramped, even when it's not busy - Parking lot can be a bit hectic during busy times but they have ample parking This location offers up older adult programming and Parkinson's classes. They also have a cool kids area for parents that need to get a workout in and have their child in tow. Costs will be more than your average gym but they have a wide variety of options available. read more

If I could leave no stars, I would. This YMCA is poorly run. Currently, there is no executive Director and no one managing aquatics This is the second time in one month that I am aware of where the pool had to be closed because a lifeguard does not show up. This is one of many issues that I have experienced in the last few years. Paying over $80 a month Is no longer an option with the way that this facility is operating. Went here today to workout in the the upper gym, and every time I come here the first thing I notice is the quality of this place! It always smells great, is super clean, and every employee is super nice. The workout area is also super clean and the quality of the equipment is great! They also have cleaning stations so you can clean off equipment after usage! Not to mention how organized they keep the equipment too, it's always in order and always is in good condition! Summer is quickly approaching and that means it's time to get the family in summer activities! I do not want to sit at home all day working from home and not have some type of human interaction. I signed my family up today to join summer classes and enjoy the many amazing benefits the Y has. The lady at the front desk were really nice and helpful. They greeted people in and out the door. The place is clean and you can tell they do attend to the bathroom areas. Some people wore masks and others did not. Use your own discretion when coming inside to use the facility. read more

As of Tuesday May 18th, Metro Atlanta YMCA's will no longer require members to wear masks. Unvaccinated members can choose to wear a mask as a "courtesy." Considering that only 29% of Georgians have been fully vaccinated, the YMCA does not care about the well-being of its members. Vaccination numbers by race: As of 5/11/21 the CDC reports that race/ethnicity was known for just over half (55%) of people who had received at least one dose of the vaccine. Among this group, nearly two-thirds were White (63%), 13% were Hispanic, 9% were Black, 6% were Asian, 1% were American Indian. It's common knowledge that minorities are disproportionately affected by COVID. Lastly, the YMCA will no longer ask COVID screening questions even though they already have the technology to do so. I cannot in good conscience pay for a membership that won't even take basic safety measures to protect it's members. The full policy is listed below: "Dear Y Members, As a follow-up to Friday's email regarding the CDC's mask recommendations and the Y's policy please see the guidelines below we will be observing at all Y facilities. For some odd reason there is a staff member who goes around telling everyone that will listen to him that I live am gay... Don't know the person... Had a few brief conversations with this member representative on several occasions and on the surface they appeard to be welcoming and helpful... However, it appears underneath that persona they have an alternative agenda... I am not an overly sensitive person... This has been going on for some time... I don't frequent the facility as much as I use to but when I do this is a problem... Why they would choose to try to defame me of all the members that frequent this facility??? For the record... For the most part, my experience with the YMCA has been wonderful---i come here to workout and catch my breath from parenting a toddler. But on several occasions when i have visited this location on a Saturday, I have had the horrible misfortune of encountering the rudeness of one employee in particular (i believe her name is Deborah and she only works Saturdays). I often go over in my Playcenter hours because I am not clocked out. I take some of the blame, since I learned recently I can check my PC hours on the app. However, sometimes I forget to remind an employee to clock me out or the 4 hours spent at Parents' Morning Out is not deleted from the weekly tally of 10 hours and i go over on hours. Deborah has always been incredibly rude and castigates me for this, as if i don't have an enough on my hands when picking up my tired, hungry child from the playcenter. She makes me feel like a negligent parent for not standing there and double-checking that the employee does her job or clocking me out. It's not so much the expectation of me doing so, but the attitude with which she dispels this criticism. She is the rudest person i have ever encountered, and i have worked in the hospitality industry for over 22 years. As my father used to say, "A little honey goes a long way." read more

Before moving to Atlanta, I was a member of the local YMCA in Augusta and absolutely loved it. I had similar hopes for the same experience when I moved to Atlanta. The Decatur YMCA is close enough to home that it isn't too much of a task to make working out a chore in my everyday routine. Parking: There's plenty of parking spots on site, but I have seen some people prefer to use street parking in the neighborhood. Getting a prime spot near the front entrance can be tough especially during peak times, but they have additional parking towards the back with stairs that lead up to the front entrance. Gym: The cardio and weights are located up the stairs. Upstairs they have 1 large studio for classes with the front half of the upper gym devoted to cardio equipment and the back half devoted to weights. The Decatur Y has a plenty of cardio choices for you to choose from to get your heart pumping! Anything ranging from your treadmill to stair climbers, and pelotons. The weight area isn't bad. You have your standard benches, squat racks, and free weights in addition to other weight machines. My only gripe with the weight lifting area is that it can take a while to work in a set with high traffic equipment such as the squat rack or bench press. I feel like the area is a little smaller than what I'm used to. I've never had an issue with getting onto any of the cardio machines. Getting out of here: I don't mind making a left hand turn on the weekends or during off peak hours, but man does it suck making a left hand turn during rush hour traffic. It's hard to see any of the oncoming cars heading up Clairmont towards N Decatur Rd. There is a light you can catch on Scott blvd, but it may take awhile to get into the median lane. I prefer the Scott blvd exit to turn back onto Clairmont just because I can see oncoming traffic during rush hour. Overall, I do enjoy the YMCA. It is pricier than other gym in the area, but I do enjoy the atmosphere. read more

I have had opportunity to visit many Metro Atlanta Y's. This Y compares favorably equipment wise. The pool is small and could be cleaner. I find it hard to believe they have to shut down the whole pool for exercise classes. Surely they could keep 2 lanes open for lap swimming? It is the staff that make this Y good. My pandemic salvation! The Decatur Y employs some of the BEST staff and instructors around. The outdoor classes offered throughout the Corona Crisis have been wonderful, even in the heat and cold. Everyone stays upbeat, friendly, and welcoming. It has been impactful on my mental health as much as my physical one. Is the Y flawed? Of course, what isn't. Every place can strive to do better. The instructors are underpaid, but never show it in their commitment to the exercise and enthusiasm. The good friends and acquaintances I have made here are invaluable. read more

On the eighth day God built this YMCA location. This is definitely an older YMCA, with a crowd that looks like they were there for the grand opening. Cardio and machine areas are cramped, but have all the requirements. The free weight area is an old school, iron gym located in what i think is the basement. With years of collecting equipment, there are several styles of plates, dumbbells, and bars. It feels like an old high school or a Gold's Gym before Arnold was Governor. Staff is friendly. There is both steam and dry saunas, as well as a whirlpool in the men's area. Not a lot of eye candy here, regardless of your orientation, and it isn't the kind of place that will make you want to hang around. Overall a good place to come, work out, and leave. The gym is pretty nice but they really need to clean the machine and start requiring patrons clean the machines when they are done with them. This is standard practice at every other gym I've been to. I've been 3 times now and have seen only 1 person other than me clean a machine when they were done with it. I have enjoyed the fitness classes thay I've taken so far and there are a lot of them offered, unlike other Ys. My 5 year old daughter loves the childcare center and I see them cleaning that place regularly so I love that. The childrens programs need work. My daughter took swim lessons there for a YEAR and still doesn't really swim. The problem is they don't really teach the skills needed to actually SWIM and they arent challenged at all. The kids sit on the wall the whole class and wait their turn to paddle to an instructor a yard in front of them and back to the wall. I mean, come on. If you just want your kid to have some water time each week maybe this is ok, but if you want your child to learn how to swim independently, this is not the place for you. Both of my kids have taken sports programs here (soccer, baseball, tball) and although you pay for them, they have a volunteer actually run the season so there are a lot of failed communications, absences, cancellations, etc. I'm never sure what I'm actually paying for other than the uniform. For all the grant money the YMCAs receive, you'd think they would be much more organized. Although I'm frustrated with certain aspects of this YMCA it is much better than the other Atlanta alternatives. read more

Worst YMCA Experience I've ever had. I walked in with four children under the age of five - two of them are my nieces. I didn't know that my nieces needed to also be members. So when I went to clarify, the woman at the front desk told me loudly (in front of a crowd) that I can look online for financial assistances. Huh? I didn't ask about prices. The way that she said it was so belittling and dismissive. It felt like she was purposefully trying to embarrass me, which was super sad because the ymca should be completely diverse with income levels. There should be kindness, patience, respect and dignity given to every single person that walks in the doors! EVERY HUMAN BELONGS TO THE YMCA! That's the reason I signed up for the ymca. We have a state of the art gym and a peloton (so no need for classes) where I live, but every state we've lived in I always belong to a YMCA - I like the diverse and inclusive community. Rude, no compassion for children who are disabled, treat me like you are doing me favor when they took her for camp but it's okay to have one thing like asthma, or autism, but a child with more than 2 things is ignored & the parent is discouraged rudely like my child is an inconvenience for being born. This Y is really good is you are just looking to work out or take some exercise classes. The staff is mostly very nice and helpful. Hours are pretty good but they do close early on the weekends, which is a little annoying. Cardio machines have mostly been upgraded recently and have TV's on them for you to plug your headphones into. The room can get full, especially after work hours during the week. Monday is the busiest day by far. Machines in the gym area have also been upgraded recently and are all connected to the FitLinxx program, which is an automated program that tracks your workouts and provides you with a monthly email detailing your workouts. Weight room downstairs is real old-school. It has a little bit of a Rocky feel to it. There is everything that you need down there though and I personally like the feel of it. Guys are usually real nice and there is hardly ever any attitude down there. The pool here is small and almost exclusively used for swimming laps or taking water exercise classes. Not really a pool for just lounging around in. Locker rooms are pretty typical for a Y. Lots of old dudes with their wangs hanging out everywhere. I've never seen so many towels be so disconnected to bodies. There are plenty of clean towels lying around, but most people here choose to walk around in the buff. I've seen people shaving in the nude (junk all up on the counter), watching TV in the nude, and even having long conversations in the nude. So, just to prepare you, lots of naked dudes that could be covered up or clothed, but choose not to. Also, whirlpool and sauna is a sausage factory. Lots of naked dudes even though this Y has a policy against it. I'm all for appreciating the naked body, but I don't want to sit around in the soup next to freeball Frank here. Overall, pretty good place. Some of the things that I've seen in the locker room cannot be unseen unfortunately though. read more

I don't review things very often, but after seeing MIss L's two star review I felt like saying something. It's always interesting to me to see how expectations and experience mix and create such different opinions over the same thing. I've been swimming at this pool now for 10 months (about 3x a week either before 9am or in the 2-4pm hour). I've never experienced one single rude person in the pool. Not once. When joining a lane the the worst I've seen is just indifference as someone moves over. No big deal, people are in the middle of swimming and it's not always easy to talk with ear plugs in. Totally expected. Maybe 3 or 4 times I've had to share a lane with two other people, but it never lasted more than 10 minutes before someone could move to another lane when someone left. It is true there are times the lanes get reduced to 3 instead of 4 for lessons. There are even less times when the lap swim gets down to 2 lanes. These times are posted and if you don't agree with it, look elsewhere. It's never a surprise. I have found it interesting that most of the people swimming here are a little older (tons of post 40-year-olds). Might be the price of membership. There are occasions when the pool may be closed for a day because of contamination. While that can be a bummer, I'm glad they check the pool enough to find out if there are any problems. I like that they have towels here. Seems like a minor thing, but they don't do this service at the East Lake location and that can be a pain day after day. I do have a family membership and the outdoor pool at the Teen Center on Memorial (near East Lake) is quite nice. A plus that you can use more than one Y. The *only* reason I dock one star is the price. LA Fitness just opened and they are much less for a monthly membership. It's something I may look at to save money (and ditch a family membership), but at the moment I love swimming at this pool. read more

This place is on some complete and utter BS. I already had some concerns and issues when I dropped my kids off for their teachers' workday camps etc.. However, I labored and went back and forth stressing over the decision on whether or not to do the family membership so my kids and I could work out together. It is $99 a month and I believe it just went up to $106. However after reading their policy on what the children can and can't do in the gym by age, I decided to go for it. Well let me just say the only thing that is working right now is the discount on the youth sports teams. On the being able to use two locations that is where I have to come in and say Decatur Y is out of line completely. In order for me to work out on a regular basis I need to be able to go to Decatur during the week and Ashford Dunwoody on the weekends. The Decatur Y is not consistent with how they deal with my sons and it is very frustrating . For one I have no problem following rules, and as far as what I have seen written and on signs both my kids can use the cardio and one can use the weights with supervision but I feel like I am on pins and needles whenever I go to the Decatur location. One of the first times I went my son and I did cardio together then he was going to go to the basketball gym . He got confused on the way to the gym nad came back up , so he got on a cardio machine and apparently he was not allowed to use that particular one , he told me later that the staff member was demanding he read the sign to her over and over that said 16 plus instead of simply asking him to get off the machine the way humans normally talk to other humans. She was standing there chastising me and my son and I was asking him why he didn't go to the basketball court, he said he didn't see it, and she said "Oh is that what he was trying to do?" again that is not respectful kids have different rules as they should but the respect level they are shown should be the same. If this was an elderly person who was confused he would not be snapped at like this. Well shortly after that the basketball court was closed for over 4 months, and again with the snappish responses when I called to check on it I was told I needed to read the emails, a) what emails? b) I am a paying customer that can't use what I paid for, how about just telling me minus the attitude? Well I went back with my son recently and we did some cardio together then he went to the basketball court, he left the court to come back to me in the cardio area. The staff came to me and told me my son was "walking around the gym by himself and he cannot walk around the gym by himself" he was literally walking from point a to b to get back to me. I told my son we were leaving then she started to tel; me all this stuff that was never stated to me when I signed up, like my son needs to be within "arm's length at all times" and just going on and on. I told my kids we are sticking together period I am walking them to and from everything we use bathrooms , water, everything, while on the floor with the equipment, however I thought that at 9 and 12 years old they were allowed to use the basketball court, and so far no one told me otherwise. After we literally found three treadmills next to each other in order to do our cardio within "arm's length" of each other my sons went to play basketball while I lifted weights , literally 5 minutes later a staff member comes up to me saying children under the age of 13 cannot be in the basketball court unsupervised. I just stared straight ahead gathered my stuff and started to go. But her reason was there were bigger kids : 17 and 18 y old and my kids might get hurt. Woman I am raising two boys, I know they might get hurt and idc!!! That is how it is. But also at what point do they take responsibility for the fact that my kids are their customers. Maybe they should make a rule that 17 and 18 year olds play in a fashion that does not hurt anyone my kids included. The Ashford Dunwoody location is totally different and they do encourage my kids when they see them working out. However I cannot get there all the time. I am thinking I may have to cancel my family membership and I would recommend families seriously think about getting the family membership. read more

Ever since I've decided working out is great (mostly because my midsection has stopped jiggling when I walk around) my husband and I have been curious about this Y and how it differs from East Lake. First thing we noticed is the staff is friendlier and more attentive. Nice. Next, we noticed that the weight part of the gym is bigger, cool, but I haven't gotten to that point in my gym ratdom. The cardio room. I have mixed emotions. When you walk in there are three tight rows of ellipticals and treadmills. The room is a bit dreary, and it felt like we were all in there pedaling/running to fuel something evil. The signs on each machine that say limit your use to 30 minutes made me cringe because at East Lake 30 minutes is usually my short, minimum workout on a machine. But I do believe there are more machines here, which is a plus. The facility seems a little old, but it's kind of charming. I don't think I'll be back because even though this Y and the East Lake Y are the exact same miles apart from our house, it takes way less time to get to East Lake because of Ponce/Scott traffic. I'm sure once the staff begins to recognize me and my winning smile they will warm up to me. read more

I was a member here for a year. While it's an OK gym, there are more than a few issues that I saw during my tenure here: -Employees range from excellent to poor in re: to customer service -Small-ish weight room -Can't talk on your cell in the gym (?) -Dues go up yearly. They jumped to $46/mo this year (2016) -The gym-going crowd is mostly 50+ -Difficult location to turn into off of Claremont -They'll give you the run around when you try to cancel your membership. You do not need 30 days to cancel a recurring bill, YMCA. Srsly. If you're looking for an expensive local gym that's moderately well equipped with an older crowd, hit the Y. If you're looking for a newer, cheaper, larger, nicer gm with a younger crowd, go to the Decatur LA Fitness. The Y was the best gym in Decatur before LA Fitness opened, but now pales in comparison. Bonus - the LÁ Fitness is between 25-30 bucks per month. There's literally no reason to go to the Decatur Y now. read more

This Y has a separate workout room for the ladies, which I'm a fan of. Also, they have separate dressing rooms for ppl w/ kids. At the Eastlake Y I was annoyed by the number of women who brought their 7 year old boys into the women's dressing room, so that doesn't happen here. However, many women use the whirlpool and sauna in the nude at this Y because they are located in the dressing room, which freaks me out, personally. I use the pool and whirlpool/saunas at the Eastlake Y and love to workout at the Decatur Y because of the above attributes. I don't do any of the classes yet, but perhaps in the future I'll try them out due to the first review! read more

Maybe my old gym just spoiled me, but I just wasn't very impressed with this location. The cardio room is tiiinny and consistently packed. You'd think that would be reason to rethink the layout of the building a bit, but I guess there's no better way to burn off calories than to be elbow distance away from the lady next to you who's walking furiously while watching House Hunters. The equipment is a little outdated as well (kind of like the clientele). Also, there was a man at the front desk who gave me such serious attitude that I was tempted to slap him across the face. There is a pool, but I didn't use it so I have no input on that front. Overall, I used my trial pass, but will not be visiting again. read more

This location is under renovation, so be prepared if you're going for the first time soon. This is a great place to exercise in a clean, safe, comfortable environment with other people who are focused on getting fit. The classes offered at this location are awesome. I've been very happy with the instruction and have felt that it was easy to walk into a class and just get going. (i.e. OK for beginners). The coaching program is really cool, too. Currently the pool is out of operation for the renovations, so definitely look into that before going to swim. Well-run, convenient, and worth the cost for the amenities included. Great children's programming for swimming and summer day camp! The cardio workout area is too small and cramped for my taste, but the weight lifting section is SLIGHTLY larger. There is a more intimate feel than the large box store type L.A. Fitness gyms, so it may be helpful for people that are intimated by gyms as a whole. I'm a gym rat and also a gym snob sooooooo I wasn't impressed. I missed getting a towel handed to me upon checking in. I wasn't a huge fan of their locker rooms. They looked very old-school JHS-locker-room-esque and I kinda got scared. I also didn't enjoy being around so many children in the locker room. I felt old and arthritic. I don't like feeling like that. I've taken several yoga classes here, and they were not challenging and quite boring. The instructor wasn't helpful [in terms of coming over and correcting people's positions or helping them with alignment or posture] and a lot of people looked lost and needed help. I wasn't very impressed, but I can see why people would frequent this place... if it's their thing. I've decided that I cannot gym at this YMCA any longer, but it's ok if you want a place where your children can be entertained while you workout, and if work-out/ yoga class ambience doesn't matter. It's funny, I go to review this, and find someone else saying Brianna is a great coach--and she is indeed. Very nice physical place, natural light, plenty of room, clean, and the Coach Approach program is evidence-based super helpful. I feel good about supporting a place that does good things for poor kids--they have day care, high quality day care, subsidized. I do not like the FitLinxx online fitness tracker, it is pathetically outdated, and limited. Hope whoever developed it will invest in an upgrade. read more

Had a terrible experience here today that I thought I would share. For starters, I go out of my way to come here as I believe the Y is a great organization and I would rather pay more to give money to the local youth than feed the big gyms. There are parts that I like about the gym: it is diverse, clean, and typically not overcrowded. However, their customer service is atrocious. Do you like to skip songs or change playlists on your phone mid-workout? I hope not because you will be pestered relentlessly by staff for being on your phone. Do you like functioning equipment and a working water fountain? If so, this isn't your gym as the water fountain was out of service for almost 2 months. Do you like to play basketball? Too bad the basketball court is occupied by classes in the afternoon pretty much every day. Would you walk to the stairwell, out of the way of everyone and everything, to take a call regarding the funeral of a family friend? If so, you will get you bickered at and in my particular case asked to leave. Wow! What a joke! In summary, I will happily pay less to go to a bigger and better gym. The only (and I mean only) reason to go here is if you have kids in their programs. Save your time, patience, and money and go to LA Fitness or Snap Fitness around the block. read more

Maybe it is the euphoria of exercising again after a four year lull, but I love this YMCA. the wellness coaches, the computerized fitness stats, the general niceness of the staff... I really feel I can get back to my old self again, now that I have joined and am committed to coming back to the gym. There is nothing like positive re-enforcement, and with the fitlinx program, I really feel someone other than me is paying attention, and I want to do them proud. Great staff. I can't say enough about them. They are the reason I still go to this location at times to use the cardio equipment. The facility needs a serious face-lift. The woman's locker room is old. Women walk around nude as though they are in their private bedroom. They also get in the whirlpool nude. This is a total turn off to me not to mention unhealthy for everyone who uses the whirlpool. Because of this, I spend more time at the new Wade Walker YMCA. They have been promising to upgrade the Decatur "Y" for the last 10 years. We are still waiting. read more

Don't expect a chic, good-looking crowd you might find at the Equinox in SoHo. I am a YMCA member, but it took me all of two months, three different friends, two in-person visits to a branch membership desk, and two virtual visits to membership online services to gain the membership referral rate. The very last time I spoke with the online services people, it took forever for the lady to respond back in online chat. I asked her why that was and she said she was helping other members at the same time...at 9am? Give me a break. The YMCA should fire everyone associated with the online services group. A member referral rate is a great concept but extremely poorly executed. read more

I would just like to say that after almost 3 years of being a member here, I am still as delighted as I was the first week I joined. It's one of those rare places that makes you feel welcome, at home, and yes, like they are all glad to see you. And it's generally very genuine. I can't thank them enough. I learned how to do yoga and pilates, got on the elliptical and used the exercise equipment following a custom program that a kind staff member designed for me. I solved my aching back problem by strengthening my core. The staff knew how to advise me and were happy for my success. They also gave me a discount on the fee since I'm unemployed. After an extended renovation the DDymca is completely finished. The cardio and weight room is well lit and open. Guys who want to lift heavy weights might not like being in a dedicated room. As an adult basketball player, I wish the gym was available more often for that. There are a good number of classes, like yoga, Pilates, and the teachers are great. Mamie just gave up her Sat afternoon class, which I'll miss, but will still teach an early morning yoga on Tuesdays. read more

This Y used to have great Body Sculpting classes that filled up every class. Then the instructors for those classes moved away & they never replaced them. The only two Body Sculpting classes are at 8 am during the week which is fine if you are a stay at home mom or home maker. What about the rest of us? We now have to go to the East Lake or Dunwoody Y for these classes which fill up with Decatur Y people. The mgt of DDY states that no one wants these classes which I know is not true. DDY is fine if the group exercise you want is Body Pump or Cycling. I live within walking distance of DDY but have to commute to get the classes I want. There are a lot of people who want and need Body Sculpting class but the attitude of DDY mgt is that no one wants that class and they seem to care less. read more
