Summer is quickly approaching and that means it's time to get the family in summer activities! I do not want to sit at home all day working from home and not have some type of human interaction. I signed my family up today to join summer classes and enjoy the many amazing benefits the Y has. The lady at the front desk were really nice and helpful. They greeted people in and out the door. The place is clean and you can tell they do attend to the bathroom areas. Some people wore masks and others did not. Use your own discretion when coming inside to use the facility.

My child does not deserve to be passed over by facilities because she has differences whether medical or not.

Ask the Community - Decatur Family YMCA

Do they allow free swims like some of the other YMCA's in Atlanta?

They have open swim/family swim at times, but you need to check the pool schedule online to find out when.

Does this location have a sauna?

It used to have a sauna before they did their major remodel project. They do have a steam room though.

    Is parking free?

Yes! There's a small lot in front and a huge one in back. There are lots of handicapped spaces and spaces for bikes and scooters. Street parking is also available.

I have been visiting Karen for personal training for over a year now and I never miss my sessions with her! She is my "reset" button every week to check in and make sure I'm on track for my fitness goals. Combined with a diet I selected and additional exercises throughout the week, Karen helped me lose 45lbs last year. I started at 308lbs. I still have a ways to go, but I'm looking forward to see what I can do in year 2. It really helps to have a person there every week who is cheering you on (especially when you've had an off week!), and someone to provide new ideas when you need the boost. How many times in my life have I taken a "break" from going to the gym only to find a week turns into several months? Having my weekly appointment has saved me from falling back into sedentary mode. If she has a spot open for you, grab it before it gets away!

Going to Karen's classes was part of those waves, but it wasn't until I was in my forties and had two kids that I decided I needed to make exercise a regular part of my life. I was looking for strength and stamina and started out with small-group training with Karen. I've been doing the same group training for two years now. Karen is amazing at what she does. Not only does she create challenging, varied, and--yes!--FUN workouts, but she gets to know each person in her class so well that she knows when to motivate you, when to give you modifications, and when to push you. She is always researching and trying new exercises and teaching you how they benefit you. Perhaps most of all, I love the camaraderie, support, and genuine care I feel in her classes. We work hard together, encourage each other, and laugh a lot. I can't imagine working out anywhere else, and I hope I never have to! If you're looking for a trainer who will support you, motivate you, and care about your health, and for classes with awesome people, I highly recommend Karen Schrier Fitness!

Serious Safety & Liability Concerns - This Gym Puts Members at Risk…read more This gym is playing fast and loose with member safety, and it needs to be called out. The sauna has a clearly posted warning sign stating a maximum safe temperature of 185°F. Despite this, staff and management insist on running it at 200°F, knowingly exceeding their own posted safety limits. That alone is reckless and a massive liability issue. What made this worse: I entered the sauna first at a safe temperature. Another gym member then came in and turned the temperature up to 197°F, completely ignoring the warning sign. When I pointed out the posted safety limit, this individual became aggressive, threatened me, harassed me, and disturbed my peace while I was simply trying to protect my health. No member should feel unsafe--physically or verbally--while using a wellness facility. Management's response? Dismissive and unconcerned. Instead of addressing: * the unsafe temperature settings * the violation of posted safety guidelines * the harassment and threatening behavior by another member ...the manager failed to take the situation seriously at all. This gym is exposing itself to serious liability by: * Ignoring its own safety warnings * Allowing saunas to operate at dangerous temperatures * Failing to intervene when a member is threatened Saunas are supposed to support health--not endanger it. Until management starts prioritizing member safety, accountability, and basic respect, I strongly do not recommend this gym. Consider this a warning.

I figured this would be a good opportunity to stop for a little bit of exercise and a shower. The 30 minute circuit was vacant and so I did not have anyone getting in y way as I did my workout on these machines including the steps to keep cardio going. Delightful release of endorphins. Showers were okay with just barely enough curtain for privacy and a hook directly next to each one for my gym bag. They were mostly clean and I'll note that the one on the end was missing a shower head. It looked like maybe it's been that way for a while. Still an OK workout and an OK shower and I'd stop here again the next time I am passing through Atlanta. [Review 1074 of 2024 - 741 in Georgia - 22101 overall]

I've been visiting this Planet Fitness for about three months, and it works for what I need it too…read more I have a workout routine, and most of the time I'm able to complete it. A lot of people waste time on machines (mostly because they spend time between sets watching tv or using their phone) but I don't have a suggestion to stop this. I try to go at less crowded times when I can. I've only had to deal with a broken machine once on the floor, and it was fixed within a week or so. I pay for the higher tier membership, and that's where my disappointment comes in. I really wanted to use the total body enhancement machine but it was broken during my first month and a half and although the machine is working now the lights are pinkish-white rather than pinkish-red, so there's no point in using it. Also, the personal training options are very inconsistent. Once, I showed up and learned that the classes had been cancelled. The second time I signed up online and received a cancellation notice via email. The training classes are not a reliable perk. I've only had to go into the locker room once to lock up my things, and it was clean and didn't smell. I haven't used the showers or toilets. The people who work here are surprisingly friendly. And they are friendly to everyone. They aren't gushing in your face but I haven't encountered anyone with an attitude. Also, the hydromassage is pretty great. Even at just 10 minutes a turn, it feels really good.

This was my first time visiting this YMCA location, and unfortunately my experience was not good…read moredue to the behavior of an older-white, female "fitness coach" named Diane. While in the weight room, she walked over to the area I was working out at. After scanning the free weights, she stared at me and the weights I was using ( I had both the 15 and 20 lbs weights). An angry look overcame her face. I believe she got upset because I was using weights she intended for her client, even though they were not marked, reserved, or set aside off rack for later use . Also, there was another brand of 20lbs dumbbells that were available for immediate use, but I guess she wanted the weights I had. Her body language and facial expressions made me feel uneasy. She then approached me aggressively and accused me of blocking a walkway which I was not. To avoid confrontation, because I know that is what she wanted, I moved anyway. Moments later, she began walking very close to me and giving me mean looks in an intimidating manner, as if trying to provoke a confrontation. At one point, she picked up weighted plates I was actively using and deliberately dropped them out of place onto the floor after I told her I was using them. She smacked her teeth, rolled her eyes, and mumbled something under her breath as she walked away. This felt intentional and threatening. I couldn't believe what was happening because all I was trying to do was work out and mind my own business. I do not understand why this woman of golden age was acting this way towards me unprovoked, and then it hit me: this is the result of working out while black! As a patron, I should feel safe and respected in a shared fitness space. Instead, I felt targeted and intimidated. Based on the interaction, I couldn't help but feel that racism, bias, entitlement, and favoritism toward her Caucasian client played a huge role in how I was treated. The YMCA promotes itself as an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone. This behavior was the opposite of that, and it needs to be addressed so no other member has a similar experience. If an employee cannot treat all patrons with respect, they should not be working in a community-centered space like this. Shame on you Diane for your unprofessionalism and disgusting behavior towards me today. It's sad that people like you still exist in 2026. I pray the most high cleanse your wicked heart and remove all evil, hatred, and racism you possess inside of your decaying soul in this present time. I hope you never get another opportunity to mistreat another person the way you mistreated me today. You went out of your way to intimidate to make me feel unwanted and unwelcome, but I refuse to allow such a miserable person as yourself bring me down. You're nothing but an old racist boomer-bully and I pity you. SHAME-ON-YOU DIANE! SHAME-ON-YOU!
