The doctors are knowledgeable, but it's very difficult to get in touch with them. I've left messages but the doctor didn't get back to me for a week. (I know that doctors only have so much time and of course they take days off.) I asked to speak with other doctors, apparently they were all too busy. LOVE!!! I can't say enough good about this animal hospital. I used to take my dog to Skycrest in Buffalo Grove since it's closest to my home. I needed to bring my dog in for what seemed like an emergency. I sat in the waiting room for 30+ minutes and then watched two other customers get called in before my emergency appointment. I absolutely adore River Trails. The staff is so friendly and kind! I have a few pets, and my cat is my best friend so when she started having multiple coughing fits a day a few months ago, I was very concerned. They found a mass in her lungs and I was completely destroyed, but they were incredibly sensitive to my emotions and talked to me like a person, not just a customer. They made sure that I left feeling hopeful about my cats treatment plan and satisfied that they did all they could do. Like I said, that was a few months ago. I could tell they really care and they always ask useful information. I started taking my cat here for his health needs and the staff is consistently kind and accommodating. My pets get exceptional care, all questions are answered thoroughly, appointments run on time and the facility is always clean. While all of the vets are very nice I must admit I do have a favorite, Dr. Beth. Sadly, we had to put down three of our fur babies and Dr. Beth could not have been more caring and compassionate not only to our pets but to my children as well. I have been going to River Trails Animal Hospital for a few years. Everyone who works there has the biggest heart and makes each pet feel loved and well-cared for. Dr. Nicole Overbey has been beyond phenomenal. She has gone above and beyond to answer questions about my dog, Izzy and put me at ease when Izzy has gotten into trouble. When Izzy was a puppy, she had a large laceration in her mouth. Dr. Overbey made sure to explain everything to me in a way I would understand. During the pandemic, Dr. Overbey and her staff have been wonderful coming out to the car to bring medication or take Izzy in for an appointment. I have used the practice for over 30 years and they have been great. Geri Cox was amazing! However, since she retired, it seems whenever we have a serious infection or issue with our dog, it takes 3 days to 7 days to get an appointment. I end up taking her to a local 24 hour clinic because I can't get in to see the vets here. So disappointing. I really like the vets there and they are so kind and knowledgeable. But I can't let the dog suffer for days because they can't fit her into the schedule. read more

My mother made her cat's annual appointment as she always does at River Trails, but unfortunately she was unable to take Dudley when planned. Being an awesome sister to Dudley, I stepped up and took him in. The staff at River Trails is exceptionally friendly, as are the resident cats who live in the waiting room. However, I didn't spend much time in the waiting room as they took me back to the exam room right on time. My vet, Dr. DeLosMonteros, was very attentive to Dudley. Dudley's had several "issues" over the years with his digestive tract, so much so that he eats special prescription food and takes medication daily. Dr. DeLosMonteros's exam of Dudley was much more thorough than my vet performs on my cat. Also, being a long haired cat, the vet tech shaved his derriere for no additional charge. He got his two shots, and we stocked up on his meds and food. Everything at River Trails was great! It was clean, didn't smell like medicine, the staff was very friendly and thorough, and there was no wait time. If I lived closer, I would take my own cat there! I can't think of what else you'd want in a vet clinic. read more

I love this practice. The staff is very cordial and the vets obviously really care about the animals. They never rush through the exams like my previous vet but are thorough and make sure nothing is missed. Three times I have had to use their services to euthanize elderly dogs whose time had come. We cannot say enough good things about our experience at River Trails! We adopted our dog, Luna, in March. We asked around about local veterinary clinics and Dr. Nicole Overbey at River Trails came highly recommended. She goes the extra mile to make sure Luna has the very best care. Since our dog is a pandemic pet, we have not been able to go inside for any appointments. The staff that come retrieve and return Luna are caring and attentive. Dr. Overbey calls from the exam room while she is with Luna to give us a full report and answer any questions. After we brought our 8 year old dog in for an unknown ailment and had bloodwork done at River Trails it was determined that she had cancer of the spleen, not by Dr. Elizabeth De Los Monteros,who was our assigned vet but by the caring knowledge of our friend who is a vet in the city. We had all xrays and bloodwork sent to him. She on the other hand had no clue of our dogs cancer and tried to accuse us of anything she could think of. Did he get into something at home? We since then had to put our dog down over a week ago by a caring inhome vet (Not her) and notified Dr. Elizabeth De Los Monteros of her death.. what do you know... no call. She is the worst! We feel that this vet is in it for nothing but the money factor. She will nickel and dime you for everything. She will show you how to put sauve on your pet and charge you for it. She seems to care about your pet but please beware. She has no knowlege and cares nothing else except padding her pocket. Our dog may have had better success with cancer had we gone to a more qualified doctor. Sad...... read more

We have taken our dogs to River Trails Animal Hospital for many, many years. Our pets have received excellent care from all of the doctors--Dr. Cox, Dr. Milewski and Dr. De Los Monteros. Each has shown competence and empathy for our pets as well as concern for costs of any treatment prescribed. I very much disagree with the assessment made by a prior reviewer, Missy. Just like with people, pets' symptoms do not always lead to instant diagnoses. Asking pet owners if their pets ate something inappropriate is a common question and is not intended as an accusation. In addition to a caring and competent vet staff, the technicians and receptionists are also very friendly. Each has worked with us to make room for emergency appointments when needed and have done so with a cheerful, accommodating attitude. Finally, when it was time to make some tough decisions about our aging and very ill dogs, the full staff demonstrated great sensitivity. The doctors answered our questions with no sense of pressure as we made an informed decision. I endorse this practice with a very high recommendation and without any reservations. read more

I have owned dogs for 25 years. They are my hobby and we compete in tracking, obedience and police dog sport. They are canine athletes and often require more than routine treatment. Over the years, I have had experience at a number of animal hospitals. About 5 years ago, I started using River Trails. The facilities are always clean and well cared for. The staff is friendly, caring and efficient. My main doctor is and has been Dr Key (nee Milewski). She is very knowledgeable, keeps up to date on new developments research and treatments. She is kind, caring, gentle and a good surgeon and diagnostician. She has handled a delicate and difficult operation on a female who has recovered completely to continue an active career as both a sport and show dog. She is thoughtful about what she prescribes and has copious notes from past visits to aid in her decision making process. I have also had the opportunity of having Drs Cox and De los Monteros treat my dogs when Dr Key was either on vacation or I needed to come in on a day when she was off. Dr Cox's long experience stands her in good stead when it comes to diagnosing and predicting outcomes for various treament options. Dr De los Monteros is both knowledgeable and caring. I felt comfortable being able to see both Drs Cox and De los Monteros on those occasions when I could not schedule for Dr Key. I feel the competency and quality of care is of the highest level. When I lost a female a few years back from old age (15+), not only did I receive a condolence card, but the entire staff when I came in and even the receptionist on the phone when I made an appointment for another dog a few weeks later expressed their sympathies. As for the person who made the derogatory comments about Dr De los Monteros, I believe those comments tell us more about the author and not Dr De los Monteros who is quite the opposite of what was put in that review. The prices are not the cheapest, but they are fair, certainly for the North Shore. Getting an appointment is not difficult and there is little or no waiting. The doctors spend as long as it takes to answer your questions and deal with your concerns about your pet. To sum up, it is the best experience I have had in my long years of dog ownership. I feel fortunate to have such a place so close to where I live but would be prepared to come there even if I lived much further away. read more

River Trails graciously got us in quickly. Everyone on staff was really friendly and helpful. Dr. Milewski and our vet tech had wonderful bedside manners with our cat, and they were wonderfully patient, helpful, and informative in their conversation with me. They presented several different treatment options and helped me choose the one that would work best for us. I thought the bill was very fair and reasonable (I was actually expecting to pay more, and wouldn't have been disappointed if I did because the service was exceptional). I moved to Highland Park from the city about 3 years ago and started using River Trails almost immediately. I have NOTHING but GREAT things to say about everyone there. I've seen a couple of doctors there, including most recently Dr. DeLosMonteros, and they've all been wonderful. I never get pressured into doing things just so they can make money which is one of the problems I had with every vet in the city. My dog used to get ear infections on a monthly basis and I was always pressured towards high cost prescription foods that I could only get at the vet. I finally switched to grain free and River Trails has always been really supportive of that. In addition, my dog hurt her neck this week and I was told that they could do xrays but that they most likely wouldn't be helpful. My previous vets would have just told me I had to have them and then said "well, we couldn't tell" while charging me $300...I very much appreciate the fact that they ALWAYS give me a reasonable first step to try before trying to put my dog on medication or give her invasive, expensive treatments. They have been right every single time with the first step. In addition, even though the office was closed on a Sunday, Dr. DeLosMonteros called my cell phone to check on my dog and make sure that she was doing ok and didn't need further immediate action taken. She was reassuring, answered all my questions, and called the next day to check in as well. Besides all of these great things, they are also more than reasonable in their prices and come in drastically cheaper than my boyfriend's vet who is also in the area. He'll probably be switching as well! read more

I have been going to River Trails for 17 years. I am now on my 4th and 5th dogs during that span. I have had numerous opportunities to interact with the vets and staff at River Trials and in my experience (and I believe I have high standards particularly where my animals are concerned), my dogs received the best care possible. In particular, I take great issue with the comments made by Missy K regarding Dr DeLos Monteros. Not for a second would I question her integrity or sincerity in providing the best care possible for my animals. These comments are so ugly and paint her as someone I do not recognize and I have worked with her many many times. By way of example, when my last dog died (and he was put down at an emergency clinic since it was a Saturday evening), I received a thoughtful and sincere condolence card from the staff including a kind note from DrDeLos Monteros. I will continue to take my dogs to River Trials and I highly endorse this practice. read more
