This is a neat place. Take time to admire the vintage hex art and be sure to note the ceramic trough and drain underneath the bar in the left dining room. I had meatloaf and filling with gravy and tt was good, but I was disappointed to see Dutchie standard Chicken Pot Pie is only available on Thursday. Also missed seeing the fried chicken on the menu. I would love to look at this place without any preconceived notions and without having read all the nice reviews. Even though It is probably the only decent somewhat interesting place to eat on a long drive to Fallingwater or Pittsburgh or further into America's middle. The place is uniquely decorate in quaint idyllic pennsylvania-dutch decoration and wall painted symbolism. You are served by a group of several pennsylvania teenagers that have fairly dutch attitudes. The food is pretty dutch and by that I mean pretty boring. There isn't much to it. There's meat and there's potatoes and other types of potatoes and more potatoes. Then there's the fritters potato fritters, apple fritters, corn fritters, meat fritters. It sits on a block with five other buildings surrounding it and is right of the interstate. read more

Surprisingly good place in a small town just off I-78 - much better food than is likely to be found on the PA-61 commercial strip near Hamburg. This is Pennsylvania Dutch cooking, stick-to-your-ribs cuisine from a culture that uses all of the pig except the squeal. We stopped here for dinner on the way from Harrisburg to Allentown. Good food - while the main courses were fine, the best parts were the side dishes and the homemade desserts. Don't waste a side on something boring like green beans when there are authentic sides like potato filling and homemade pickled beets. The desserts were wonderful, including excellent shoo-fly pie. The building is historic, and there are nice Pennsylvania Dutch decorations on the walls and ceiling of the room that we dined in. Tables and chairs are banquet hall style and could use an upgrade. I attended this restaurant just last night with my mother and father, expecting quality - only to find overpriced, disappointing food lacking any flavor whatsoever, as well as shoddy and unprofessional service. I can firmly say that I both do not recommend the Deitsch Eck, and advise others to not open their wallets to the greedy owners of this establishment. As soon as I stepped into the door, I noticed that the service staff lacked uniforms. This normally wouldn't be a problem in such a small hole-in-the-wall place, but it puts off an air of amateurism that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. In all seriousness, couldn't the owners spare a single penny to attire their employees properly? The signs outside of the restaurant itself advertise a 'decorated' dining room, and here too the Deitsch Eck fails to deliver on its promises. The interior was a simple light-blue and white color scheme; but artistically, that is distorted by the fact that there is exposed piping, ducting and wiring. The white walls have a feeling of empty soullessness to them, and the doilies hanging in the window are both downright garish and old. There is nothing artistic or even 'finished' about the dining room; it feels like it was half-assed and rushed together at the last possible minute. For appetizers, I ordered the potato pancakes and the fritters. The potato 'pancakes' weren't even 'pancakes' - they looked like squashed tater tots that came out of a bag, and tasted much the same as ones found in the freezer section. I'm willing to bet that they didn't bother to make their potato pancakes in-house, or even learn what a proper 'potato pancake' is. Here again, it feels like it was rushed in the name of expediency; and downright abysmal quality is ample evidence of it. The fritters were decent, but nothing to write home about, especially considering that they didn't bother to make their own maple syrup, honey or apple butter. As someone who lives close by, and someone who's had access to the real thing for all of my life, I was frankly appalled. For entrées, I ordered liver and onions with potato filling, because what could possibly be more PA Dutch than that? Surely, they could redeem their earlier failures here? Oh ho ho, no. The liver was overcooked, tough, and had the distinct moisture content and texture of course-grit sandpaper. The onions served with them were overly greasy, not seasoned at all, cold as a stone, and burnt to hell. The brown gravy doused all over them tasted like it came out of a tin of Wondra, and the potato filling was downright repulsive. I barely touched my food because it was simply that bad. For thirteen dollars, I expected to get my money's worth down to the last cent, but it appears as if the owners only spent a penny in ingredients. My mother ordered the chicken Parmesan. When I took a bite, the chicken was devoid of any seasoning, and I swore that I could taste the inside of the can that the marinara came in. Here again, the food felt rushed and amateurish. Given the amount of grey hair in the room, I can surmise that they were preparing their clientele for hospital food. In the end, if you want shoddy, faux, overpriced PA Dutch food with unprofessional service, horrible decor and bad atmosphere, then go to the Deitsch Eck. If you want none of these things, you're better off reheating a leftover pizza and sitting on your couch. It's all about the sides. We had, and loved, the corn fritters, apple fritters, dutch chips, chow chow pickles, and more. They have a good crunch burger, and even the crab cake was pretty good. We'll be going back. The portions are very generous, so be careful about ordering too many delicious sides. You'll want to save room for desert. read more

First off, be warned if you are vegetarian or want to eat even modestly healthy, this is NOT the place for you. They deep fry just about everything and admit the kitchen doesn't even have a broiler. The green beans were canned and boiled to mush. On top of everything else, they were "out" of half the things on the menu. They have a huge array of what they claim are homemade pies, but after our unnecessarily heavy entrees, we decided to pass. read more

This is a little slice of deliciousness and a very welcome surprise when traveling on I-78. We were hungry for anything but fast food when we stopped in, and we were not disappointed; the cheese burgers are generous, the Dutch fries crispy, the roast beef sandwich smothered in brown gravy wonderful, and the bacon salad satisfying. Our group was almost too full for a slice of warmed apple pie with a crumble crust, but I'm glad we had that too. Very pleasant wait staff. I don't even know what to call that filler combo. Served on the bulky roll- no. My husband got a Reuben. Not PA DUTCH, but I gotta say, it was good. $9.95 good? No. Not a hearty sandwich for that price at all. We got a piece of Coconut Pecan pie to go. Delicious. Server said her son hand makes them. Believable, it looked like a homemade pie not made in a factory (you know, it had slight imperfections and the crust looked hand made) and it was very good. Basically it's a very sweet coconut custard pie with pecans in it. Cheesecake, also to go. Says her son makes them homemade. Hard to believe. It was very good, and perfect. Hard to duplicate uniformity over and over with a cheesecake. Perfect top white sour cream layer. I question the "homemade" part, since nothing else was done with any great precision. Poor, poor service - they seated our party of 3 in a different dining room than the other guests who arrivde before or after us - so we sat alone in a long dining room with only interminent service.
