The staff was friendly and the music was good. We will definitely return for another brunch! I had the pork chops, which came with two sides. I added a third side of cilantro rice and gravy. The pork chop entree comes with two; I had one fried and one grilled. The fries pork chop was better IMO but the grilled one wasn't bad. I really enjoyed the macaroni and cheese and baked beans. The cilantro rice and gravy was underwhelming. I think it would have been better without the cilantro. I was disappointed by the bread pudding. I would prefer for it to not have raisins- I should've asked before ordering. I tried to eat around the raisins but there were too many of them. The bourbon sauce tasted like pure bourbon. Good soul food in the DMV is hard to find but last week we stumbled upon Della J's , a black owned restaurant in Alexandria serving up delicious southern cuisine. The ambiance was chill and the menu looked promising so I was hopeful. The old fashioned was strong but decent and The sweet tea was a miss but the lemonade was tasty. We started with the cornbread muffins and they were dense but good and For diner, we ordered the chicken wings (because that's the only chicken they had) and the seafood platter which came with a crab cake, shrimp and a catfish fillet but we ordered an extra fillet. Each dish came with two sides so we ordered a side of green beans, collard greens, fries and Mac and cheese and everything was well seasoned and tasty and the breading was A1! Although the collard greens were cut large and then look appetizing, they were actually quite flavorful. I was sad that they didn't have a chicken breast or thigh but that didn't take away from the experience. We ended with the brownie a la mode and left feeling satisfied. Smooth from start to finish. I visited on 10/5/24 to celebrate my birthday. There were 20 in my party and I'm telling you I have never had service so smooth. We ordered several appetizers including Bang-Bang Cauliflower, wings, calamari and Brussel sprouts - all of them were delicious. Our entrees were Cajun shrimp Alfredo, wings, seafood platter and whiting. Mac/cheese, cabbage, mashed potato and potato salad sides: everything came out hot and fresh. I ate here for lunch on Christmas Eve with a friend and I ordered the stuffed shrimp w/ mashed sweet potatoes and collard greens. My friend ordered the barbecue ribs and she had the panko fried green tomatoes for an appetizer. I really wanted to like this place, but not sure if I will return. When my plate got to my table, I knew I should have sent it back so I kick myself for not doing so. I could smell the seafood and it was strong which meant that it was NOT fresh and maybe it was spoiled, but I tried it anyway. Btw, the sweet potatoes were DELICIOUS! However, that smell that I smelled was correct. The shrimp was bad. Halfway before I made it back home over the bridge to MD, my stomach was rumbling. It all went downhill from there. All Christmas Eve day I was on the toilet. I didn't feel better until Christmas Day afternoon so needless to say I cooked dinner late and I still didn't eat for fear of still being sick. I'm gonna be honest this time the food wasn't as flavorful/ tasty as It usually is so I was a little disappointed but still giving a high rating as it is usually amazing. I love the atmosphere here and everyone is so nice. I will say I prefer some servers over others as when I get one in particular she tends to not check on her tables very often at all even when it is not busy so you can end up sitting for 20-30 mins and need something and get no help so that doesn't help the experience that is usually great. I went here this week for a late lunch. The food was very good but the service is unsatisfactory. We were in there around 2pm and there very few people there. Upon being seated we waited for 10 minutes before anyone came to the table to greet us. After our order was taken we didn't see our waitress again for another 15 minutes. Someone from the kitchen brought out our food. We did see our waitress again but she never came to the table. We were looking for a beverage refill. We finally decided to just take our food to go. We had to ask the hostess for our check because our waitress didn't come back to the table again. The waitress finally showed up with the check and we left. She was not the only waitress on duty and we counted only 2 other tables. The waitress needs training! If this is how the service is at this restaurant I'm definitely not going back! I got seated near the bar area. The bar tender seemed to be waiting on most of the tables. He was very friendly and added a pleasant touch to my visit. I ordered from the lunch specials menu. Open faced turkey sandwich and a side of mac and cheese. The sandwich was great. I just wish it was a little bit hotter. It was almost as if the sandwich say a little longer before it was brought to my table. The Mac and cheese came out very hot. The Mac was seasoned well. I also ordered the peach cobbler for dessert. The peach cobbler was delicious and the perfect way to end the meal. I did notice it was served warm, but there was some inconsistency with the temp as I was eating the cobbler. I believe it's important for the right person to be aware of my experience. I ordered a turkey breast for six people, which I received on Tuesday. Unfortunately, while carrying the box into my apartment, it started leaking, and I was not informed that there would be liquid inside the box. More significantly, I was quite disappointed with the quality and taste of the turkey breast. The texture of the meat appeared this turkey was processed and lacked the seasoning I would expect from a restaurant known for its southern-style cuisine. The thick slices and overall flavor were reminiscent of convenience store food, which was quite unexpected and frankly, disheartening. While the quantity might justify the price, the taste and overall experience fell short of my expectations. During my in person visit to discuss my experience I was told by a representative that due to allergies, the food is not seasoned well and that in the future I should leave a note in my order asking for seasoning. read more

A friend and I wanted to do lunch. We always do korean b.b.q. I was game, until I saw a reel on facebook promoting Della J's. So we said let's do it. To begin, the appetizers were pretty damn great. The fried green tomatoes had a great crisp. The tomatoes inside were softer then I ususally do, but this made no difference to me. The sauce for dipping was a little different, but good. It kind of looked like a stone mustard, light in color. Other then that it is hard to describe the flavor. Next appetizer was the calamari with onion straws. I wouldn't say onion straws per say and not onion rings, but onions battered and fried. The calamari had good flavor and not chewy. The sauce for the fried green tomatoes paired well with the calamari. The corn hushpuppies with honey butter. DAMN!!!! SO GOOD! The main dishes: My friend got the grits with shrimp and bacon. I do not like grits, but I took a taste just to show I tried it. I LIKE GRITS, OR AT LEAST DELLA J'S GRITS!! They were so creamy and flavorful. I would order them as a meal. I got the fried jumbo chicken wings or whole chicken wings. I got 4. They were cooked well, and juicy. They just had no seasoning. Once I had a little salt added with hot sauce they were good. I was expecting an explosion of flavor, but womp womp no. The coleslaw, don't bother. Again, no flavor. I don't want them overly drowned with mayo, but this really was just cabbage impersonating coleslaw. The fries are fresh cut. If I had known, I would have had them cook longer to make them crispy. Fresh cut fries just take longer. We were going to do the bread pudding. Unfortunately, it is made with raisins and that is a big no for me. Overall, I would come back! We always meant to try Della J's while it was still in Springfield but just never got around to it. I was surprised to see that they moved to Alexandria by the time we were able to head over. We were placing a pickup order on a Sunday afternoon and the wait was 50-55 minutes so keep that in mind. We placed an order for the Chicken and Red Velvet Waffle, Coconut Panko Shrimp and Grits, Three Jumbo Lemon Pepper Wings, Cornbread, and an Arnold Palmer. The Parking lot was extremely packed and it didn't help that it shared the lot with an Ihop. Things were backed up during pick up so it took a little extra time to get our stuff. Inside of the restaurant was nice and there was a lot of people eating in too. The food was worth the wait though. My girlfriend's chicken and waffles were very good. Strong red velvet flavor and the chicken strips were decent sized. I usually don't order shrimp and grits but these were the best I've tried. The bowl of grits wasn't as big as I expected but they were so cheesy and had a good amount of bacon. The shrimp were enormous and perfectly fried. The wings were also fried well but the lemon pepper didn't stick too much and the ranch was missing so a little disappointed there. The cornbread was standard, nothing too special but it did have pieces of corn in it which I liked. The Arnold Palmer was refreshing and really hit the spot. Pretty sure this is the first black owned restaurant I've tried in the dmv area and it was an excellent choice for lunch. Food - The food was very good! There is a large margin of error for red velvet cake, but the red velvet cake here was moist. The banana pudding was also delicious!
