My friend told me about this place so we went.... The server was nice but became less and less attentive. We could have ordered more drinks and food but she would be MIA for 20 minutes at a time without checking on us. I got the fried pork chops, collard greens and mac and cheese. Started with the buffalo wings, they were just ok. They need to offer an option to upcharge for all flats/drums, 6/10. The pork chops were perfect 10/10. Thank you for your reply. I wanted to clarify a few points. First, there was in fact a manager present at the bar that evening. I personally spoke with her, and she was aware that not only my party of 2, but at least a few other guests seated at the bar were also waiting an unreasonable amount of time without being served, not even water. So, while I understand your comment that "a manager is always on site," in this case, management observed the issue and did not intervene or provide professional service. Second, regarding the automatic 20% gratuity for jazz night....after reading your reply, I went to your website, social pages, and even looked at photos..... The only stated policy I could find was for parties of six or more are charged 20%. There is no clear mention of a mandatory gratuity being added for jazz nights or for parties under six. However, I didnt stay for Jazz night..I was there for happy hour If this is indeed policy, it was not communicated, displayed, or applied transparently, and the fact that the server had to return with a second bill after "forgetting" to apply it suggests a lack of transparency! Lastly, I don't find it "odd" to wait 15 minutes for menus and 10 minutes for water...I find it disappointing, especially in a restaurant that prides itself on hospitality. Instead of implying that the experience I described could not have happened, I would hope that management would take responsibility and make improvements. Integrity in business is simply the willingness to acknowledge when something fell short and fix it. I truly hope you take this as constructive feedback. Della J's Delectables This was my first and last visit. I arrived for brunch at 1:57 PM (brunch ends at 2:00). The host was pleasant, but service at the bar was extremely disappointing. It took several minutes for the bartender to acknowledge me. She initially brought the wrong champagne, then offered another option that was flat. While I waited, two regular customers arrived and received immediate, friendly, and attentive service--frequent check-ins, special food accommodations (even after brunch ended), and accompaniments with their meals. In contrast, I was ignored for long periods, not asked if I wanted food until much later, never checked on once my food arrived, and not offered sauces or accompaniments. I had to ask for my check myself. Food was decent (7/10), but customer service was a 0/10. The difference in treatment between regulars and new customers was very noticeable and unacceptable. read more

This place is excellent and I always get great service. I came here Sunday with friends after a convention in DC and we were craving some tasty food on Della Js could offer. The crabcake sandwich was lumpy and not wet or to breadcrumby which is nice, no filler. My friends got the fried wings and the other friend baked both juicy and delicious. The fried chicken was great light flavor and delicious with hotsauce ;). The baked bbq chicken was great too and the BBQ spot on. The greens, mav and fries all great. I ordered 2 individual Thanksgiving meals from Della J's this year. The meal options sounded good so I went with a white meat turkey meal and a brisket meal. Each meal came with a choice of bread (I selected cornbread for both) and 2 sides (choose from the regular menu). I knew it was a lot of food but I wanted options and to try a few things from this restaurant. I didn't like that individual meals had to be ordered the day before TG as takeout meals. That meant they were hot so you had to reheat them for TG, while the meals for larger parties came chilled with reheating instructions. It's like those ordering individual meals were being treated differently (and not in a good way). On to the ordering process. I called around 12:30pm the day before TG and was told they were backed up and to call back in an hour. I called back more than an hour later and got the busy signal a few times and the call wouldn't go through. Now I was getting nervous that I might be left without a plan if I couldn't get through. But finally did get through and placed my order. Had to provide a credit card over the phone for payment. I was told the order would be ready in about 20 to 25 minutes and received a text in about that amount of time. I picked up my order and when I asked if there were reheating instructions was told no. I do think the customer service could be a little friendlier. Anyway, I checked that everything was there and left. Food smelled good on the drive home too. Fast forward to TG day. I decided to heat it up in the oven instead of the microwave. I was excited to eat but the food left me underwhelmed. First off why in the world they put the gravy on the turkey knowing people would be reheating it the next day, I don't know. It seemed to create a plastic like seal after reheating. Kinda gross looking. Overall the food had just a little flavor but I was expecting more for a restaurant like Della J's. I tried not to add salt but once I did, things tasted a little better (and I'm not one to overly salt my food). Out of everything, the best were the sweet potatoes and the cranberry sauce. I've had brisket elsewhere and this one seemed to be cooked in a bbq-like sauce that was just ok. The most disappointing was the Mac & cheese. Very very greasy and also lacked flavor. The cornbread was dry, but after using butter and sprinkling with salt, it tasted better. I hate to say it but Della J's did not satisfy my TG food craving. read more

We went at 11am on a Sunday and was greeted and sat right away, the brunch menu had lots of great options, I had the chicken strips and waffles and they were delicious the chicken was seasoned well and waffle was fluffy. Good soul food in the DMV is hard to find but last week we stumbled upon Della J's , a black owned restaurant in Alexandria serving up delicious southern cuisine. The ambiance was chill and the menu looked promising so I was hopeful. The old fashioned was strong but decent and The sweet tea was a miss but the lemonade was tasty. We started with the cornbread muffins and they were dense but good and For diner, we ordered the chicken wings (because that's the only chicken they had) and the seafood platter which came with a crab cake, shrimp and a catfish fillet but we ordered an extra fillet. Each dish came with two sides so we ordered a side of green beans, collard greens, fries and Mac and cheese and everything was well seasoned and tasty and the breading was A1! Although the collard greens were cut large and then look appetizing, they were actually quite flavorful. I was sad that they didn't have a chicken breast or thigh but that didn't take away from the experience. We ended with the brownie a la mode and left feeling satisfied.
