I'd give this place six stars if I could. What a fantastic meal! We were exploring Sonoma Square and decided we wanted Italian - A quick look at Yelp found us walking to Della Santina's. Thankfully. First, the owner Rob pointed us in the right direction throughout our meal - the Burrata was a much better choice than the caprese salad that day, and the caesar salad (no egg) was perfect. The four of us made quick work of the starters. The wine list was great; the Barbera was delicious as well. Then the entrees: We split an order of sole and an order of penne - which by the way was PLENTY for the four of us - but when Rob came out with a sampling of "Grandma's gnocchi" to try I was floored. Definitely the best I've ever had, truly melts in your mouth, amazing sauce - how does it not dissolve on the plate? That's their secret I guess. The fish was perfect, and the roast potato as a side was crisp and fluffy - perfect again. The penne came with a light, creamy sauce and lots of veggies - the artichoke lent a flavor that had me sopping up everything on the plate with the bread. We opted for the tiramisu for dessert, but Rob had to share with us the house specialty dessert, "Delizia", their take on baba au rhum and then some. We were stuffed before dessert, and yet we somehow all managed to clear the dessert plate too. Four forks fighting over cake, cream, and coffee goodness on a plate. This was the best Italian meal I've had in quite a while, perhaps since my last NYC visit. Rob says his family also owns Marin Joes - now I have to go there and compare. After coming here for many years I am compelled to write a bad review for what used to be one of the better restaurants on the plaza of Sonoma. I had reservations for a Sunday at 6:15. I had confirmed the reservation the day prior, but when I arrived the host/manager/bald headed jerk said he didn't know the name or have a reservation for me. He did this in the rudest fashion ever. He walked away to see if he had a table. My father leaned over to me and suggested we eat somewhere else. I should've taken the advice and went to El Molino. The service we got from the waiter was great. The food we got from the kitchen was not. The duck was dry as my father's branzino. They gave my daughter some delicious gelato, but they didn't make that. My wife's gnocchi was nice as well. There are other restaurants nearby that have better though (BV). Sorry Della. Our relationship is at an end. I'm sure you'll be fine without us. That doesn't make me any less disappointed. read more

A friend of mine and I went wine tasting this week and we ended up here for an early dinner. The food is AMAZING. The pasta is absolutely perfect (well, authentic Italian dishes and they been there for as long as I've been alive) had the Tortellini alla panna and a latte (real raw sugar cubes here, not that cheap white sugar they try to give you elsewhere!) the coffee was strong but perfectly balanced also. The outdoor patio with all of its plants and flowers made the experience wonderful! When dining in the patio, it's like a you're in a whole different world. Prompt service and the friendliest host/waitstaff you could possibly want in n outdoor dining experience. They have an extensive wine selection and they also do wine tasting too. Amazing experience. My party and I were looking for a pasta dinner in Sonoma after wine tasting earlier that afternoon. We found this restaurant on Yelp but didn't have a reservation, so we waited at the door at 5pm, along with a few other people trying to get seated. Luckily they had tables available in the dining room. The servers were very friendly and accommodated any special requests we had. Of course, the server will recommend all of their special items for the up charge, so if you're curious about a menu item keep that in mind. We ordered the pappardelle with duck ragu, a large Caesar salad, and strawberry shortcake for dessert (all split in two). The pasta tasted fresh and very "rustic," and not usually what I opt for in Italian restaurants but I wanted to try something different. I wish I opted for one of the rotisserie items for a heftier meal. The Caesar was run of the mill. Lastly, the shortcake dessert would've been great if not for the liqueur sauce on the side, which overpowered the freshness and natural sweetness of the strawberries and cream. It was disappointing and I wouldn't order it again. Overall, I probably won't eat here again if in Sonoma. read more

Eight of us there for dinner. We all had very good to great meals. We were outside and felt cozy and warm. Service was great.

Made reservations for two. When we arrived the restaurant was slow and many tables available. Our overall customer experience at this business was not acceptable and we walked out. First, we asked for a table that we liked and were told it was a table for three people. My thoughts were just remove a chair and since it was super slow, what was the big deal. We had to settle for a table with two chairs that we did not really care for. Secondly, we were sitting for five minutes and no one came to ask for our drinks. We felt ignored. We decided - let's go some where else who will attend to us properly. And we did! read more

Benny the manager was rude and unprofessional. He argued about the food quality and that he has no issues on 40'orders of lasagne and never had their appetizer returned. The food was bland with zero flavor. They still charged me for food I didn't eat and argued. I understand customer service is difficult right now and people are understaffed but they should value their customers going out of their way to eat there. Made reservations for a party of 6 for 715pm on a Thursday. Arrived and was seated right away (delightful). And then proceeded to wait for anyone, ANYONE on the wait staff to acknowledge us. It took at least 20 minutes to be acknowledged and another 20 minutes to have the wine delivered and served. We had to ask to order dinner and we were still waiting for our entrees at 815. In A Nutshell: -Della Santina's Trattoria is a nice, cozy Italian restaurant located at the Sonoma Plaza. -It's recommended that you make a reservation due to it's popularity. -There's a seating in the front or towards the back. -The house red wine is a great sipper to start things off while you dip your bread into their house olive oil & balsamic vinegar. -The heirloom tomato salad w/ anchovies is a tongue-pleaser. -Their Gnocchi Della Nonna was plentiful & really hit the spot. -I also tried their Pappardelle Al Sugo Toscana, which was my favorite b/c it was fun wrapping the large, flat noodles around my fork covered w/ their Tuscan-style ragu sauce. Came here for my 2 year anniversary with my SO and it was sooo delicious! I did go awhile ago so I'm not too sure if they still have the tents up in front of the location. The seating was very fast and we were so excited when we were given he solo stand off tent I feel like it was such a nice experience we were able to close off from everyone else and made us feel like we were alone which was nice when you're on a date night. We ordered our meals and asked for what would be the perfect pairing with them and we were given great choices by our server. He was very friendly and answered every question we had. *** BALD HOST GUY AT THE FRONT *** this is one rude Asshole! I walked up on a Monday evening around 6:30pm, said I did not have a reservation. He then proceeded to tell me that they're full for the rest of the evening but I could go next door to the wine place and they could probably serve us inside. I mentioned I had 2 dogs and that they probably won't take us, then his attitude changed to even worse and said "ya we only take service animals so we couldn't seat you anyways"..... really?! There's photos of patrons taking pix with there dogs in the back patio... so my wife thinks I misunderstood so she went to have a chat with him... she came walking back saying loudly "you should not be serving the public, you need an attitude adjustment"..... now for anyone that knows my wife, you have to be a complete and total ASSHOLE to get her this mad. read more

We had a terrible experience at Della Santina last night. The food was good-not great. I've been going there for many years-as much for the ambience as the food. We've always been welcomed and treated well. Not last night. I tried to reserve a table online but my iPhone said no connection. So, I tried calling, reached someone and they said I could reserve over the phone, which I did, including asking for patio seating. I was told all fine. When we arrived the "host," John, was hostile and rude. He said there was no reservation and that they only did reservations online. I explained that I'd called. He effectively called me a liar and treated us as if we were trying to manipulate our way into the place. John is a big man (not in hospitality but in stature) and he seemed to be trying to intimidate us. When I explained my experience of calling and seeming to have made a reservation, he just kept saying there is no reservation. Apparently there was a problem with his staff but he acted as if I was just a scammer. We almost just left. Oh yes, when I said I'd asked for the patio, John said it was only for people who'd made a reservation. Our server was really nice and helpful and the food was good. My friend's cannalloni was gloppy with too much sauce but tasted OK. My fish was nice. John's rudeness left a bad taste. I note rudeness by host has been an issue in a number of recent reviews. I hope he gets some hospitality training soon. read more

I found this incredible hidden gem from the Sonoma Visitor Center via Instagram. Came here for my birthday dinner. We had the most incredible meal. Everything is hand made ( the pasta, the bread). The lasgana was incredible, delicious. Completely different then any other lasgna have had before. Service was on point. The food was delicious! I can't say enough about how wonderful our visit was. We didn't have much time because of our shuttle schedule so we told the host. They quickly sat us & gave recommendations as we picked our meals to ensure we left on schedule. The tortellini was super fresh & flavorful. The Turkey sandwhich was surprisingly upscale.... it had a lot of meat on fresh bread. Staff quickly refilled out drinks & was super attentive. One of the best wine lists in town! Fantastic food! Lovely service. My daughter and I had a nice girls night a few weeks ago and everything was spectacular. I literally dream about their gnocchi pesto and tonight there was a delectable boar sauce that blew my mind - amazing! Their salads are always fresh and delicious and all of their soups (think barley and minestrone perfection) make me feel like I'm in Italy. The last time we went Rob brought out a spectacular bread pudding that blew our minds (neither of us were eating carbs and we killed it lol!). Espresso to boot! By far our go to for Italian or any other food. can't beat the food service or atmosphere!!

The owner of the restaurant was extremely arrogant. My family and I came to visit from New York, there was 7 of us, he tried to seat us at a 4 person table, and insisted we would fit, we did not ...he rudely pulled over another table, made us feel awkward and uncomfortable, laughed at us. The menu made no sense for a restaurant that is supposedly "Italian". We still decided to stay and order food. We have never tasted anything more bland before. The meat was tough, the veggies had zero flavor and the fish was dry. I highly recommend no one ever visits this restaurant. From service to food- terrible, terrible experience. It was sad to be honest. Stay away. Only giving one star because the flowers were pretty. read more

They were nice about getting us in on NYE after I screwed up and made the reservation for the night before but not before saying it's NYE, a holiday and we're busy. Uh yeah, I realize it's a holiday, that's why we're here in town visiting and I screwed up my days. We had the Burrata and Prosciutto and this was delicious!! Then the gnocchi and that was good but the truffle oil overpowered this dish for me. Then we ordered the Pollo Allo Valdostana Chicken and it was ok. We wanted some pasta but noooo and that's why we ordered the gnocchi. My husband's colleague said this was a must when visiting Sonoma. Honestly it's hard to believe in all the years we have visited Sonoma, we never ate at this wonderful restaurant!
