This place is a bit hidden but easy to get to. From the 8, exit Waring Rd and when on Waring, it'll be a right turn at the first light and then a left at the stop sign. The driveway is easy to drive past due to all of the cars on the street. I have never struggled with finding a parking spot in their lot. Staff members were friendly and service was perfect. Lighting varies by the table. The food was cooked just right. Chicken fried chicken was separated into two pieces and the bacon gravy went well with it. I found this place through Yelp while looking for some happy hour deals! This place has some good deals everyday. We went on a Tuesday and they had $5 tacos or 3 for $12. $6 margaritas & featured tequilas. My friend ordered the 3 for $12 tacos. Birria, carnitas and fish tacos! They were huge tacos! Good price! Del's hideout is a great place to hangout and watch the Pads. It's dog friendly and I usually bring my bernedoodle once every so often. I usually come over here for some BBQ as there aren't a ton of options in the area for that. The bbq loaded fries are pretty good. Definitely a ton of cheese/queso that I think takes over the flavor and hides the pulled pork flavor, but it's usually my go to appetizer. The onions rings are huge and it's definitely a full course meal and can feed the kids pretty easily . The brisket is by far my favorite to get here as it has that perfect mix of bbq and seasoning. The TJ Burger is quite delicious. Lots of flavor that packs a punch between the aioli sauce and pepper jack cheese. The actually meat could be a little more but I'm not surprised in this type of economy of the amount of meat but it's a decent amount. Service typically is a 8.5+ out of 10. I've had a server completely forget about us but I won't let that one experience take away a star. Alicia is very friendly and attentive. When I walked in this place, it was exactly like I had pictured it in my mind (a good thing) - relaxed roadside BBQ joint. It was very clean and welcoming to boot. We were seated at a window (garage door) table and our server was being trained. They were both extremely friendly and attentive, and also were prompt in getting our food to us. One slight hiccup - I asked about one of the ingredients in the drink I ordered, and they said they would get back to us on what it was, but never did, even after asking again second time. I had the bacon washed Tim's Old Fashioned, and while it was fairly delicious, the bourbon was sharp in taste. The onion rings were a spectacle: extremely heavy batter, but with a perfectly cooked onion in the center. And boy did you get a lot - probably enough for a table of four. The main I ordered had meatloaf which was the star of the night - moist, flavorful, and delicious. It also came with brisket which wasn't as flavorful as it could have been, but better than average. The Mac and Cheese was great, and I also had the hominy gratin that could have been a home run if it wasn't cold. (I tested this out with leftovers and it was amazing!) The food was definitely a value for the portions served, but it seems like it really could have been stellar with just some small tweaks. As we ventured down the road to this place we quickly realized "hideout" was a an appropriate name. This location is tucked back beyond a few apartment communities and the 'first look' was a fun one. The second observation was how full the parking lot was. The street parking was even packed but this felt like a confirmation that we were in for a great meal. We walked in and were greeted and seated promptly at a nice four top indoors but next to the outside with a cool breeze. I was so surprised to see a video game zone along the back wall and even more gobsmacked to see they had a child play zone. It was so nice for the kids (one older child) to head over to the area for fun while Dad and I relaxed waiting on the food. The menu had so man options that it was a bit of challenge to pick but we each decided on the classic cheese burger, kids Mac and cheese, and the party of 2. On social media and in their large menu binder on the table it said $19.95 for May deals however the waitress brought out a small tiny hand sized 'special' menu with higher prices. I think the 'May' price may have been different and that was their usual price. But we were not charged the May price that we saw. I recommend going with the brisket. It's smoky, tender, and well-seasoned. The bark could be a little better. The sides are unremarkable and the beans are not vegetarian if that matters to you. The overall ambiance is great with plenty of indoor/outdoor seating and TVs showing sports. They have a small arcade section. I was looking forward to trying Del's Hideout. The restaurants in the Cohn Group are reliably good and some exceptional. This was not the case for Del's. We arrive around 5:00 on Sunday afternoon. There was a sign inside the front door stating "Please wait to be seated" so we waited. There were a lot of staff on the floor, a couple servers were talking at the bar, but they did not look up to acknowledge us, the restaurant was not busy. After a couple minutes we were greeted and taken to a table. The server was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We ordered and our food came out quickly. All the food on our plates was barely warm to the touch, with the exception of the Mac and Cheese. The Texas Toast was cold and obviously been sitting around for a while, one piece was curled up. We called a server over, we told her the food was cold, she said "I'll get the manger " and ran. We told the manager the food was not a proper serving temperature and the toast was cold and old. She told us they have a problem at this location with the servers letting food sit to long. She's the manager, if she knows of the problem, why isn't she addressing it? She told us the food must have sat on the counter without a heat lamp and the wait staff must have let it sit too long. I shared my concern with food not being at a safe serving temperature. She assured me it was hot when platted. We were not there long enough for hot food to be room temperature. One of my side dishes was beans, but the silverware on the table caddy did not include spoons. The pickles on the plate were cold and tasty. From our table we could view wet floor signs and brooms. The hallway to the bathroom was lined with stacks of chairs. The manager offered to have our food remade, at this point we were not confidant in Del's ability to serve food at proper temperatures. We left without eating. We were very disappointed. I expect more from a restaurant group that can do such a good job at Island Prime and some of their other restaurants. This would be my second time ordering takeout from del's hideout. The first time I liked it a lot so I was really sad to have been disappointed in the taste and quality this time around. We ordered 2 meat combo with double brisket and bacon potato salad and coleslaw. The brisket was visibly dry and definitely not as tender and moist as it was the last time I had it. The bacon potato salad was bland and under seasoned. The coleslaw was very sour with an odd taste to it as well as be runny. This time we were able to get cornbread instead of the Texas toast it was the only saving grace of this meal. Sadly, I will have to look for a new bbq place that serves brisket since del's has fallen beneath expectations. $40 for some subpar bbq and to add insult to injury they added $3 subcharge. This place is such a hidden gem. Finally took the leap after driving past it and I am frankly blown away. The beer selection is incredible! And their cocktails ate fantastic as well, very balanced! Let's start with the restaurant ... it is great. The food is great - very good BBQ. The mac-n-cheese is delicious and for some of the cocktails it's got a fun vibe because the drinks come in "juice bags" like Capri sun drinks. HOWEVER - service can kill an experience. It's too bad Yelp doesn't break down the ratings by food, service, etc. The server we had on Father's Day was RUDE. So rude that our whole family was talking about it after we left - everyone was shocked by it. Which is why I'm writing this review. It's not ok to talk to customers in a condescending manner. My grandson was trying to order a soda and she told him to "wait," she had to tell him the long list of sodas they had but he's 10, he knew he wanted Coke or Pepsi. I chalked this to a fluke. But then she was rude to my elderly mom - she NEEDED to be in charge and heard. My mom was trying pick salad dressing and she couldn't hear the server too well but the server couldn't move past her last question - she actually said "I said - dressing on the salad or on the side." I almost said something then because now it's becoming an issue. Then my husband asked for something and she did it again and responded with "I said." Sad part is I'm pretty sure that they add the tip automatically into large parties but she didn't mention that and I tipped on top of it not knowing. Which is a tip I regret because she didn't deserve the gratuity that was automatically added but definitely didn't deserve an additional tip. Also, I hate when they show you the reader with the bill - we had 18 orders with food/drink, I couldn't see all of the charges. Had my first opportunity to eat at Del's Hideout the other day and in most regards both the food and the service were excellent. Although not the best of parking lots, the interior of the restaurant is open and spacious. As with many SD spots, tv monitors hang from most walls, broadcasting sporting events. The vibe loans itself well to casual dining. The waitstaff was not only friendly and helpful, but considerably well-versed--both about the restaurant's history and bbq in general. I was also pleased to see several different types of bbq sauce available, including South Carolinian (where they call it Q) mustard-style. I wouldn't have minded a North Carolinian one either. As for the main course. Great brisket, great pork, great corn and great mac 'n cheese. The collared greens weren't bad, but they were just a bit too salty (and the larger leaves hadn't been "stripped", meaning the main of the leaves hadn't been removed). Take in all, a really good feed. The only downside: Del's is a bit pricey. $18 dollars for a fairly modest sandwich. It might have included a few more ounces of meat and/or a couple of extra sides. Alright, I will take that as it comes; things are costly in the SD region. That's especially true for restaurants that may be operating on razor thin margins. I am guessing its location makes it a bit of a hideout indeed. But overall, a great little find. I am not sure it's a destination spot, but if you are anywhere between El Cajon and Mission Valley, it's definitely a place worth checking out. read more

I was willing to overlook the first time it happened as everything else was great. I'd driven past Del's Hideout so many times but after a bbq craving hit hard, finally decided to give this place a try! It's located in a pretty obscure area but it's easy to get to just off the 8. The food is DELICIOUS! I got a bbq plate with ribs and loaded on the sides: potato salad, side salad, mac and cheese. The meat was tender, flavorful and super filling. There was definitely more food than I need for one meal, even two. My husband got the brisket sandwich and it was so good. I took a bite and it was just so juicy and tender.
