My experience on the Delta King riverboat was not memorable in a positive way. As I prepared to surprise my wife with a beautiful evening on the water at the Delta King I may reservations at the pilot House restaurant. I have I never expected what I encountered when arrived. The color of my skin was obvious that I was not welcome. When I approached the clerk's desk to pay for my reservation which I already had done on before I before I arrived he reassured me that he did not trust my card and made me pay cash thank God I had cash!! This was just the beginning of a nightmare the nightmare that awaited us. After checking in decorating the room and going to get my special lady I arrived back with her and preparing for a night of bliss. When we arrived my wife was intoxicated by the romantic gesture. Now surprised that we have a room on the on the boat I immediately said let's go to our dinner reservation and I know you're starving we prepared for a magnificent feast and total enjoyment in a relaxing and fabulous restaurant. Sadly this was not to be. The hostility and air of negativity, along with what I did not wish to deem possible actual racism. I envisioned the era my ancestors had to experience, old Jim Crow. The attitudes were not disguised.I felt the blatant hatred that the service workers projected towards my wife and I. I was in disbelief at first, like when I was asked to pay in cash and leave a substantial deposit at the desk. But it was too obvious to ignore. Couples who were of the dominant race, were deliberately taken from the line and seated before us. We were ignored, it was as if we were invisible!!! And from the arrogance and obvious way that the process was deliberately done, we weren't welcome on the Delta King. How dare we invade their private enclave. We were eventually helped by a young Hispanic male, and he was chastised immediately by his supervisor for breaking protocol. How dare he attempt to rectify and give credibility to the idea that this was not the first time. In in hindsight, little things became obvious... There were no people of color seated in the restaurant. Which maybe why we were asked would we be dining in the restaurant or were we going to the bar. When it came time to eat my steak took probably an hour or two at least. Our food was cold as if it had sat for quite a while. The steak was leather chewy. And burnt badly. I couldn't send it back because by now the trust was broken. There's no telling what would have been done to it. I hate to say that I toughed through the ordeal. Why I don't know. I should have protested, made it evident that I recognized that I was being mistreated and I did not. So I have decided to let everyone know about the racist attitudes and disrespectful behaviors being put on display at the Delta king. My advice, I implore all cultures that wish to be respected and treated with the dignity z they deserve, to steer clear of this establishment. read more

I thought staying on a cute boat hotel near Old Sac would be a fun idea during a quick business trip to the area. But I was very wrong. I barely slept during my one night stay because there were random people from the downtown area running around the hotel banging on people's doors. It was very frustrating. The hotel NEEDS an overnight security staff. On top of that I went downstairs for breakfast the next day. The lady who was seating people was busy changing tables, which was fine. But when I asked her if I was in the right place for breakfast and how it worked, I receive attitude from her. Maybe she wasn't a morning person, but I was already exhausted from my lack of sleep the night before. In addition during checkout no one asked how my stay went. I'm very disappointed. read more

So for me and my boyfriends six year anniversary we decided to stay at the delta king overnight since my coworker recommended it highly. We get there and have to wait for 15 minutes for the valet to come back from who knows where. Checking in was good. We got to our room and it's view is the water and it's so nice. The rooms aren't super big but it was cozy and air conditioned. The bathroom is small as well as the shower but not that big of a deal. The breakfast from the restaurant was great. Overcooked steak I would never recommend this place ever again!!! A chef that doesn't know how to cook a New York steak properly after three attempts; shouldn't be a chef. There were five of us ladies, and four ordered the New York steak and the girl lady ordered the pork chop. 1st attempt, three of the four orders of New York steaks was cold that even the block of butter that was placed on the steak didn't melt. Only one of the New York steaks came out right. So, we sent back three plates to be corrected. 2nd attempt, instead of preparing a new steak, the chef recooked the same steak that was sent back, it was brought back to us overcooked and charred instead of the medium rare that we had ordered. What chef in his/her right mind does that? Recooking & charring the same steak does not keep it medium rare! 3rd attempt, with brand new steaks, still this chef doesn't know what medium rare is in a steak!!! At this point we were all so hungry that two of the ladies decided to just eat the over cooked steaks and I refuse mine... I'm not paying $40 for a steaks that can't be prepare correctly. The whole evening was such a huge disappointment that ruined one of our friend's birthday celebration. As for the manager, the only thing she could do was offer me a free dessert... really and no discount for the two over cooked steaks? I ended up not having any dinner because I could trust the chef's cooking. My friends didn't enjoy their meal! We would never recommend this place to anyone ever. What happened to them? Cool historic hotel on the river. See if you can get a room that faces the river, so you can also enjoy sitting outside on the deck and watching the seagulls and sea lions that hang out there. The beds have sharp corners (bruises!), but the rooms have neat historic details, and the location is perfect for strolling around. read more

This is the second time we stayed here. It was mid December and freezing cold. Thankfully the heater worked well. Room is small but clean. I had a problem with the bathroom sink as it has two separate faucets. One for hot and one for cold. You can't get warm water that way unless there's a stopper for the sink, which there was not. The location is right in Old Town which is nice except for the large number of homeless folks and folks smoking weed as you walk off the boat. I wouldn't discourage anyone from staying here but we'll probably stay elsewhere next time. read more

There have been times when we try to go and enjoy the Delta King and their restaurant or bar are not open for the general public- that can be disappointing. But the couple of times I have been there to eat service has been pretty good, food all seemed fresh, looked appealing and tasted good, ( or at least didn't give me an upset stomach afterwards). I positively adore the place. This is a wonderful bed and breakfast. The restaurant is very good, and super friendly. I kept telling my wife that I feel like this should almost be in the south they are so friendly! We both would like to come back. Most if the rooms are small, but in a cozy way, and have everything you would need. I mean literally everything. They have cozy bed clothes, the slow and gentle rocking of the ship will put you right to sleep too. They have a coffee maker, an ironing set, and even a little television set. There is nothing left unchecked. I admit that I'm not a television watcher, so I cannot comment on what is available. However, my wife and I noted that even though on this particular trip, my wife is pretty sick, everything is well within walking distance. Old Town Sacramento is so great! I love it here. They have some really excellent restaurants, fun shops, and all kinds of unique things to do. There is truly nothing I can complain about. The hotel has wifi too, and it's free for guests. Plus, this hotel restaurant has one of the few good cups of coffee in California. Don't get me wrong, you can get okay coffee all over, and decent coffee at a lot of places, but as much as I love coming down to California, it seems to me that during the gold rush someone mistook some gravel for coffee beans and it started a trend in the whole state. Well, fortunately the Delta King wants to set a new tend, coffee that tastes like coffee, not gravel. All the historic sites are well within walking distance, and there is even a mall with a movie theater less than 10 minutes away by foot. Which makes for a really swell place to stay, and it's easy to have fun date nights. This town has a pretty wild nightlife though, so if you're more bookish like my wife and I, you'll have fun, but do keep that in mind. All in all the neighborhood is very safe too. There are some homeless, but they don't seem to threaten anyone. Don't forget that there is a ton to do in the daytime as well! A former unique"staycation " destination has succumbed to greed, eliminating most amenities. Rooms are only serviced by request regardless of the length of your stay. Clean towels, shampoo, conditioner , lotion, and coffee packs for morning coffee are only available upon request. Breakfast is no longer offered free with the room , instead a 20% discount is offered but not before they raised the the prices by 30-40%. The hotel does issue a "free cocktail "coupon upon check in(only valid on check in day). When you attempt to redeem the coupon you find out that the cocktail is not your choice but a small peach Bellini (cheap champagne and a splash of peach liquor) Regular bar prices have more than doubled , an old fashion and a Midori Sour ran a $32.00 price. The room we were assigned for over $200 a night was one of the worst we have experienced. The mattress sagged so badly we both woke up with backaches. The draw for us was the live music on Thursday nights which has also been eliminated. At $208 per night plus taxes for 2 nights, $579.72 total! This was a huge disappointment which we will not repeat and we will share this experience with all our friends and family together. read more

It was a fun experience staying on the Delta King. Location is close to everything Old Sacramento has to offer. Breakfast in their restaurant was great and included with the package. We had a beautiful view of the river, while we ate. I loved the history and felt like I was stepping back in time when I walked into the lobby. I read about a little girl that haunts the ship, so I left a piece of Salt Water Taffy on my night stand for her. Around 3:15 am, I was awakened by the night stand door opening and slaming, only inches from my face. You can believe me, or find out for yourself! If you're intrigued about the paranormal, the Delta King is for you. A few reasons I didn't give it 5 stars. Our door to our room, was in the lobby. Next time I will request a little more privacy. We were also under a staircase, all night we could hear people stomping their way up and down the stairs. All in all, we will be back. It was a great experience and we made sweet memories there. I hosted a birthday party on the Delta King. Rachel was great and pleasant to work with. I was a little hesitant with deciding on a menu selection since they didn't allow a taste test. But the food ended up being great and everyone raved over the good food. Since it was my birthday I figured it would be a great opportunity to stay overnight in a room on the Delta King. I have wanted to do that for years but never did since I live in the area. I was disappointed they required me to do a two night minimum stay in order to book a room. I spent over $3,000 hosting my party and I wasn't allowed to only stay one night?? That was very disheartening so I didn't end up booking a room unfortunately. Overall, my experience was good. I just believe in better customer service. Especially, customers who are paying their hard earned wages to keep a company in business. read more

Owners of this place should give it to somebody who cares about it. Spent night there on the 29th. Reserved a room on 3rd, 4th or 5th floor, on the SAME end of the boat as check in. Where ive always stayed. Get there day of and some younger black guy checked me in. No name tag. Also NO friendliness, smiles or helpfulness. This guy should NOT b in the service industry. I asked where ice was on boat, hoping they had invested in an ice machine or two by now. He refused to answer me, saying, well cover everything, but in order of his freakin lil written speech. Ugh. Yeah. Asked for a bottle of peregrino water and same lame answer from this guy. He told me it was him i spoke to when i made reservation after telling me my room was on OPPOSITE end of boat from check in rooms i requested. River view, end of boat, closed to ramp entering from the street. CONVENIENT. Room 534 also had NO DOOR ONTO DECKS , like all the rooms i requested. He failed to offer to find a better, more suitable room fir me. NO help or kindness. It was Tuesday, few people there so im certain another room was available. Long crappy story short, the CONSTANT NOISE of a huge hummmm kept us awake most of the night. Was not inexoensive room either. Lousy room. Floors r a MESS. Needed redoing years ago. Now they have sanded them down to appear flat, but discolored layers, so nobody catches their shoes on the bad floors and falls like I saw happen there last stay there. Unacceptable, dangerous and ugly. Turns out the flake at check in charged me $4.50 for the water i asked for and NEVER received. Plus tax. Yeah. Beware of this place. Restaurant menu is TINY these days. VERY limited. And NOW we HAVE TO PAY FOR THE COMPLIMENTARY BREAKFAST that has always been free. Around $20 each. Sigh. Place has more than a few unskilled and unfriendly staff. Too bad owners dont run it themselves, maybe caring more, cause its not worth the $ or aggravation anymore. This was a wonderful venue for a getaway date night. I've lived in Sacramento my whole life and never spend time until now on the Delta care. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The food that we ate in the restaurant was extremely tasty and well-prepared. I highly recommend that if you have not experienced the Delta King is is something you must do at least once. If you do spring for the larger rooms because they are smaller than normal hotel room. The experience is worth it if you want to feel like 1800's wealthy. The surrounding venue of Old Sacramento adds to the experience. There are lots of establishments within walking distance. This is one of our favorite places for a weekend get-away. The rooms are comfortable and we love sitting on the deck watching the river traffic go by. There is a wonderful restaurant and bar with friendly and competent staff who make our stays very pleasant. So when you call Delta King to make a reservation, you are instructed to leave a phone message with your name, number of people, and time you are requesting. We called at 4 PM for reservations at 6:30 PM. No confirmation call, so we just showed up. The second we entered the door, a couple from the other side got to the maitre d' first, had no reservations, and were seated immediately. He asked if we had reservations, I explained the phone message, and he said, "Did you get a confirmation? Wait till I check it out." A loud, drunken man and his wife came down the staircase making a big commotion as if he were best friends with the staff, touching the maitre' d and being touched in return. and were seated immediately, instead of us. The staff was very young, and were running in all directions and flustered even though the restaurant wasn't even 1/4 full. Finally, a server came back to seat us and I told him we would have been seated faster if I had said I had no reservations like the couple that came in ahead of us. We were seated at the stern end outside, overlooking a clunky old bridge in the darkness, listening to the clunking of an old ventilation fan and lots of more drunken tourists shouting and laughing. I ordered the seared wild salmon, which was perfectly seared, served on a bed of stone cold couscos, for the pleasure of paying almost $40. My spouse got the pork chop with bacon jam on a huge pile of mashed potatoes. The pork chop was gristly and full of pieces of fat that you couldn't see in the dark and had to spit them out once you figured out what they were. Our waitress was perfect, nice, and kept getting me more tonic waters from the bar, knew exactly what she was doing. $125 later, we walked the plank back to shore saying, "Yeah, we did that." read more

We only give them one star because the server, hostess, and manager (?) were lovely. We were so disappointed in the food. We had the mushroom appetizer, spinach salad, and the New York steak. EVERYTHING was subpar. The mushrooms were underwhelming and the salad was boring. The steak was so tough, my fiancée didn't even eat any of her food. The mashed potatoes were tasteless and the veggies were literally two pieces of broccolini and one nearly raw 1/2 carrot each. It was shocking, especially for that cost. We were out celebrating our engagement and early Valentine's Day. So sad that our dinner was like this... You can't repeat your engagement dinner. They did give us a sorbet trio to celebrate. It feels as though you get to experience a piece of the past if you ever get the privilege to stay a night or two on this lovely boat. I planned a "staycation" here and had a fabulous time. I have stayed at the Delta King numerous times over the past 20 years, including this past week, and always love it. If you like history, nostalgic charm, and the quaint atmosphere of "the good old days" then you should also really enjoy staying on this historic riverboat. I've only eaten breakfast here, and it was good. On general principle, I'd recommend eating lunch or dinner elsewhere at one of the restaurants just yards away in adjacent Old Town Sacramento. As for parking, you have a few options: a reasonable valet service, spaces right out front with a two hour limit from 10 to 10, or a multi-level parking garage that's an easy walk. I always choose the option that is most convenient for my plans, and have never felt bothered. The Delta King is one of my favorite places to stay IN THE WORLD, and I have gotten around. read more

I stayed overnight on The Delta King Friday APril 14th and had the worst time ever staying somewhere that I can think of. I paid almost $400 to stay overnight there. Service there wasnt much better. The bread wasnt warm enought to melt the butter that comes with it let alone make it speadable even My dinner of brined pork chops was 99% fat! I aske the sserver what he thought of the look of my pork chops and he said thats all fat. Yes exactly Im struggling trying to find a bite I can eat. The little meat that was in the fatty part was pink. I wish I had taken pictures. I was then told the cook left already I will see what I can do. I said dont worry about it I lost my appetite and my dinner guest has almost finished their meal. I went to bed sad and hungry. Woke up to experience the continental breakfast that looked like the put out what was left from the otehr morning. 4 muffins on a plate that was on a small serving area with pre packaged cearal and some fruit and some carafes with milk and I assume coffee. Ive been to many places that charge way under the cost I paid to stay on this boat that have served a way better options in there continental breakfast. A pretty unique fact that this restaurant is on a boat; makes it feel like your in a classic movie setting. They have seating both downstairs and upstairs, with a view of the lake. The outside decor is Picturesque, with a mock train and boating deck, so its good if you want to take classy pics with friends. A group of five of us came here to get food before a concert for dinner. Because I wasn't too hungry, two of my friends and I shared the fried calamari ($12.5) and sundried tomato and chili hummus ($9). I also got a cocktail with bombay gin ($11.50). Our other friends got the mushroom risotto ($16) and small caesar salad ($9). Highly recommend getting the complimentary bread! The crust was perfectly crunchy and inside was so soft, goes very well with balsamic and olive oil. I was impressed by their fast service! Came out in less than 15 min. The fried calamari was to die for! The sweet chili aioli was so creamy and decadent. Calamari was perfectly crispy and not overly salty. The hummus was also good too, it had a nice kick to it. The texture was not lumpy and very creamy. Wish there was more pita bread since the portion size of the hummus is pretty large. My cocktail was also good, not overly sweet and mixed well. I took a star off because of the initial service. It took a while for our waiter to bring out the menu/ask for water. But overall, food was great and atmosphere is very unique. Stayed here before, loved it. This time, not so much. Paid the high price to stay in The Captains Quarters. It was cool for about three minutes. Until we found that only one side of the double bathroom sink faucet worked, no in-room refrigerator to keep bottled water cool. No ice maker, had to call front desk for ice from the bar. With the quarters your supposed to have a private patio.... people were walking all around the outside of our room on our private patio. I had to call the front desk and complain. The room is right over the bar... noisy. Tomorrow we're staying in a different room. You don't get more bang for your buck in the Captains Quarters. Save your money and spend it downtown. read more

We went here 2 weeks back for our anniversary around 6 for dinner. We got a table outside overlooking the pyramid office, tower bridge and the beautiful river. Since in March the sunsets are beautiful, we really enjoyed our time here. 20 minutes in we drinks finally arrived though there were few vacant tables, may be they were under staffed. The service is extremely slow. Our food arrived after another 35-40minutes but both our entrees were good. I had the cheese risotto with veggies and was very happy with it. My husband got the house special scallops and he loved them. All in all come here for the view and drinks, don't expect the staff to click pictures for you with amazing backdrop, have a few friends / other guests do that and be patient. read more

We arrived at the peak of lunch time on a Sunday without reservation. The host greeted us promptly and offered us "the best table" as he put it. It was indeed the best table with a great view of the Delta and in full sun. Luckily for us that we enjoyed soaking in the sun after feeling cold for days in the East Bay. We ordered Spanish mushrooms for appetizer. I got black bean burger which was served with natural cut fries. Both items were surprisingly great. The Spanish Mushrooms were amazingly good. I wish there was more bread to soak up the delicious broth; nevertheless, we drank all the broth on the plate. Being a vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised to see a vegetarian black bean burger on the menu. It wasn't just a black bean patty between the buns. It had a slice of tomato, cheese, guacamole, and fried onions. The black bean patty was spicy just how I like it. The buns were nicely toasted. I really enjoyed the burger. My friend had fish and chips. I believe they were good since he left an empty plate. The waitress was polite and friendly. The man filling our water was attentive and humorous. It was such a lovely dinning experience as we are finally able to dine in a restaurant again (although we were sitting outside on the deck). I highly recommend dining at Delta King. read more

The rooms are so small that only 2 people can fit in it a time, and they are NOT like the photos. They are truly 80year old rooms, not a single update. Guy at the desk said we were "banned for life" after we showed up to get our rooms. We got there to get our rooms, which was under my mom's name. But as my mom decided she had to work she couldn't be there with us. We were still under her name and when we told him the name he said he couldn't give us the room because "Anyone could be claiming to be that name." We were getting a little bit frustrated with him at this point which seemed to put him off. Then he just shook his head telling us "Just leave!" We asked if they already charged my mom and he said "No charge! Just leave!" Banned for life! Isn't that a bit much!? We didn't do anything wrong! Absolutely ridiculous! I swear not to sound racist or anything but I've had less trouble haggling with the Hindi guys at liquor store before! At this point I don't think I will ever go back there even if they were nice about it and gave us a discount or something. Already left too much of a sour taste in the mouth! Good riddance! read more
