I brought two pairs of Diesels to these guys with big holes in the crotch seam. I was apprehensive because both pairs are stretch denim, and the holes were really big. It took them almost two weeks but they did a great job, and the price was pretty reasonable - about $55 each for the main holes plus a few little mends too. Really happy and highly recommend. A quick note that I came here after a not-great experience with Denim Therapy. While the technique is similar, in my limited experience these guys (Denim Surgeon) picked better material to match my jeans, and while it's definitely a patch, the skill level is much higher and it's preserved the fit of my jeans. I took a similar mending job to Denim Therapy and they used a stiff patch material, and sewed over it a million times which ended up changing the fit of my jeans (they're bordering on too tight to wear, and the pockets are almost useless now). Having purchased two pieces of raw denim without proper understanding of the break in process, I was facing issues with discomfort in the crotch. I thought i was going to have to tolerate the discomfort or sell the jeans. I sent out several messages to various denim repair services including the fabled denim therapy and was met with the same response ,"we can only take in the rise, not let it out." I took my jeans in to denim surgeon with low hopes, where I was met by Kattya who immediately knew the issue and how to fix it. The work was done in a week and the quality of it was excellent. These guys are the high priests and priestesses of denim. I brought in two pairs of jeans - a pair of G Stars with the most bizarre fit I've ever encountered and a pair of Rag and Bones that were two sizes up - with different specifications for each. I brought in my favorite and best fitting pair of jeans for them to use as a guide. They went out of their way to make sure they understood exactly what I wanted, even going so far as to ask if either of the jeans were selvedge (they weren't, but I appreciated the attention to detail). One week later, I have two perfectly fitting pairs of jeans! I would recommend their services to absolutely anyone. The prices are steep, but I'm of the belief that you can't put a price on great craftsmanship. I would definitely return for more alterations or repairs! read more

This operation is atrocious - they LOST my favorite jeans and REFUSED to compensate me so I could buy a new pair. If you are thinking of using this service, take your money elsewhere - they are incompetent to the extreme, and their customer service is nonexistent. I dropped off my favorite jeans to repair a torn belt loop on December 11th, and paid extra to have my jeans shipped back to me. By January 18th I had not received my jeans. I texted Denim Surgeon at the number on my receipt, and they told me they shipped my jeans TO THE WRONG ADDRESS. Despite neatly and clearly writing my address on the receipt slip, Denim Surgeon shipped my jeans to a completely different address. When I alerted them to their mistake, did they apologize? Offer to make the situation right by giving me money to buy another pair of jeans?? No, they did not. Rather than apologize, Denim Surgeon told me to wait while they tracked the package and tried to get it sent back to the store. Not surprisingly, that approach yielded no results. I had to follow up multiple times until finally they called me back. I told them it would cost $250 for me to buy another pair of jeans to replace the pair they lost. They insisted I send them a link to verify that price. I did that. Then they insisted I provide a receipt for the purchase of my original jeans, which I declined to do -- they lost my jeans and now its my responsibility to remember where and when I bought them, and dig through past credit card statements? That's insane. I'm a working parent and I do not have time to do that when Denim Surgeon are the ones who LOST MY JEANS. Then they ignored me for a week. When I followed up AGAIN, they told me they filed a claim with USPS to track the package - again, another insanely stupid action on their part because USPS did deliver the package, but it was Denim Surgeon who gave them the wrong address! I told Denim Surgeon they had a choice - do the right thing and compensate me for jeans, or I would write an honest yelp review about this situation. In response, they called me "abusive" and "not cooperative" so here we are. Avoid them at all costs. read more

What's with all the good reviews of this place? I had my jeans fixed here for some serious crotch blowout. They charged $50 bucks to sow a patch into them. I guess the quality of the work is okay and they did put a selvedge denim patch into them but the patch is stiff/bulky so they are super uncomfortable now and I have to walk like there's something in my pants and the jeans don't fall right anymore. You can see the edges of the patch through the jeans. There are other places in the city that will do higher quality repairs without a horrible patch or at least make them feel right when it's done if they do put a patch in. Worst of all it costs 4x as much as any local tailor would charge for the same thing. Don't waste your time going here. read more

I am very pleased with the work. I had 2 pairs of jeans, one was 7 the other JBrand that were my favorite "go to" jeans. Unfortunately they both gave out within a couple of weeks of each other. I was about to just toss them and then I remembered about Denim Surgeon. I figured I didn't have much to lose since I was ready to toss them. I am so glad I didn't!! The response and turn around time was better than expected as was the communication with them. And the work is perfect! No one will be able to tell I was about to throw these jeans away! Had a great experience. My favorite Diesel Jeans had a hole on the back pocket which slowly turned into a 2 inch tear. I called Denim Surgeon and sent them a picture of my ripped jeans to their email address and quickly got a price quote over the phone. I went and gave my jeans and picked it up a week later. Denim Surgeon is a tailor in midtown with a special eye for denim. On my first visit to the surgeon, I had 3 pair of jeans hemmed. One pair has a lime green stitch, which they couldn't match, but I can understand, given that it is such a unique stitch color. For my second operation, I had inexplicably torn one of the jeans I recently had hemmed. Having seen similar results on their web site, I was not surprised when I received my jeans back in great looking shape. While it would be impossible to completely hide the work done, they did an excellent job on my repair. I had also dropped off another pair of jeans that I ultimately decided not to have fixed because I could buy a new pair for the price they quoted. The woman who took care of me did suggest some less pricey options, if I really wanted to have these particular jeans in wearable condition again. Even though I didn't take her up on the offer, I thought that was great customer service. I definitely recommend Denim Surgeon. read more

My experience with 'denim surgeon' has been quite mixed over the four transactions i have engaged in with them. At first I was thrilled to find a business i could confidently entrust with such a delicate commission. After all, I love my denim and I wouldn't take for granted that just any tailor understands the bond between a person and their 'perfect' jeans. Nor would I assume that any tailor could appreciate just how easily that perfection could be marred by a sloppy alteration. Denim surgeon sounded the perfect place to go. I was convinced that i was in the wrong place when i finally entered the shop - there was not a scrap of denim in sight. Moreover, the shopkeeper seemed so careless in taking my measurement that i was uneasy the entire week i waited for them to complete the Euro-Hem. The only consolation i had was the unusually high price they gave me - no one could justify charging that if they weren't expert at their craft! The results left me unimpressed, yet with little to complain about. The length was still a bit long, but much better. Moreover, you have to look very close to tell they've been altered. But the denim surgeon had made no attempt to match the original stitching, which disappointed me. I went back to denim surgeon though, because I was just too curious to see if they could really do what was in those before-and-after photos with the outrageous rips that magically disappear. I had the perfect test too, as an expensive pair of designer jeans i bought came to an untimely end ... in the extreme. The price they quoted was so outrageous, i really thought I must be crazy for even CONSIDERING to pay it. At best, I could only they would leave me with a second-rate pair of jeans. Curiosity prevailed, though, and I couldn't be happier with the results. They did an amazing job. A pair of jeans that was so mutilated I thought I could never wear them again were like brand new. I was only too happy to go back again. They repaired more rips in another old pairs of jeans i was too nostalgic to get rid of, although this time the work was sloppy with threads hanging loose everywhere. The color they used to fill in gaps is not even remotely close to the original. I also took a leap of faith and decided, if they could bring dead jeans back to life, maybe they could even alter the size of the waist. Huge mistake - they ruined a $300 pair of jeans. They cut new seams where there hadn't been any - the man blatantly disregarded my concern upon dropping off my jeans that they would actually take them apart and piece them back together along the original seams, as it says on their website. Again, they made no attempt to match the color or stitch of the original tread. I would have rather gained back the 20 lbs i lost since buying the jeans if i had known what the outcome would have been. To make matters worse, the guy was outraged at me that i wasn't happy - I didn't refuse payment or even ask for a discount. The damage was done! Yet he sat there abusing me for my ridiculous expectations (that they do what they advertise), because after all this was "just a pair of jeans." While denim surgeon's web page easily gives one the impression that this business specializes in denim, i would caution that that is a gross misrepresentation. As pointed out in a previous review, this is a TAILOR. A nasty tailor with at that without the slightest regard for detail, understanding of quality, or decorum to feign courtesy with his customers. read more

I've been going to this place since March/April and been hooked ever since! They're great at altering my jeans to fit my body type.

I've taken jeans here for so many operations: hemming, tapering, waist alteration, repair, you name it. Kattya does it all and she does it really well. I've been coming here for a few years now and the work has always been excellent; the stitching is sturdy and the fit is great every time. They've given a second life to a few pairs of my jeans. The customer service is excellent, too. Everyone here has always been really accommodating, and even when they're busy they won't rush you. I took a pair of designer jeans here for a friend who needed a repair quickly before moving out of NYC. The zipper pull had come off the jeans and I tried to take it to a few other tailors who said the entire zipper would have to be replaced and the pull couldn't be saved. Denim Surgeon was able to fix the jeans and replace the original pull, and they did so with a very fast turnaround. The final price was less than what they originally quoted, and they gave me a slight discount as well. Anyways, they called me within a couple of days after I dropped off 2 pairs of jeans to give me a quote on the repair price. So, with my first pair of raw denim (Baldwin Henley), I tried out Denim Therapy, also in NYC, for alterations. I was mostly pleased with the results, except they tapered the leg from higher than I had specifically requested on the form I sent with my jeans. So, when I purchased my LVC 1966 501xx, I wasn't too keen on using Denim Therapy again. I emailed a few different companies, but ended up settling on Denim Surgeon for their apparent attention to detail after corresponding with them a few times. I needed the whole leg tapered and a chainstitch hem. I provided them with the measurements I wanted for the thigh, knee, leg opening, and inseam. They turned out absolutely perfect. I could not be more pleased with them. Not only that, but after I paid for my alterations, I ran across their Groupon offer. They ended up allowing me to apply the Groupon offer afterwards and credited me $30.00 back to my PayPal. Overall great experience and will definitely use them again in the future. read more

This place literally just refused to alter my jeans. Have you ever been told to leave a tailor shop because you asked them to adjust the fold more than once? That just happened to me at Denim Surgeon. The most unfriendly, rude man was adjusting my jeans hem. The first time he made it too long, I asked him to shorten it by 1.5 inches, he siged and said he thinks that'llbe too short. The second time, adjusting it he only put a pin in the front and one in the side, so half of it was hanging down and uneven, and when he asked me if it was ok, I said I'm not sure, it's hard to tell since the pins aren't pinned all thew way around. Frustrated, he literally walked away from me, left me standing on the stage in front of the mirror and went in to the back of the shop to work on something else. When he came back about 1 minute later, he asked again with an attitude, so is this ok? When I said I really wasn't sure, he told me to forget it, that he wasn't going to do the alteration, that it was too much, and questioned out loud to me in front of other customers in the store, what is it worth? Ummmm a customer??! Worse customer service ever. The only reason why this place gets any star what so ever, is because the gentleman sitting in the front of the store that works at the other part of the tailor shop (not Denim Surgeon) was extremely nice and helpful.
