This entire plaza never existed when I was here and opened up after I left to go north, but its nice to come back now and see how nice things have developed. This brewery & restaurant was a delight to visit and so glad I gave it a try. I needed some dinner a few days ago so decided to stop in on a Friday night. The place is beautiful with high ceilings and gives a spacious airy vibe thats laid back. There are also some Maryland flags hanging tastefully, nice touch. I sat at the bar and was quickly greeted by a very nice bartender. I started off with the Hike the Alps Hefeweizen and it was exactly the kind of hefe I like, hoppy, flavorful and definitely not bitter. Excellent beer! I also had their noodle salad dish and this was surprisingly very good. Very light, with lots of spinach and veggies and it was tasty with no guilt! I next wanted to try either their Potomac Punch or Georgia Ave beers, and was torn about the two, so the bartender let me taste both. The Georgia Ave beer is a peach sour, and since its only Spring and not yet stifling hot, a sour wasnt going to work for me just yet. I tried the Potomac Punch and this was fantastic, its an American wheat beer and you could taste the fruity notes, so very good! I didnt want a full 16 oz, so opted for a 5 oz. pour. Came for my company holiday gift exchange. My coworker and I recommended it based on our experience with another group. My coworker paid cash and was told they only give change back in coins. She would have opted to pay card The food had mixed reviews. I had the steak salad and only cared what kind of pilaf was used for the salad dressing. There's a nice slaw, trace of sweet tangy sauce, kick in the seasoned fish, nice fresh chopped tomato and onion topped with cilantro. Best fish tacos I've had in awhile... and I highly recommend it. I came here for an event. I love that you can host different types of parties in this location. The staff was really friendly and attentive. I like the decor. It was very open, spacious and festive. They had TVs with sports games. I ordered a couple basic cocktails and adult grilled cheese. The grilled cheese was not my favorite. I was intrigued by the concept I wanted to give it a try. Went around 6PM on a Friday after work with my husband and was greeted by multiple hosts who worked quickly to bus a booth table for us and get us seated. My husband had two of the Southside West Coast IPAs which were refreshing with his Chili Crunch Smash Burger which had a great savory Asian chili kick to it. He was going to order the Cool Breeze which was an oatmeal stout but the server recommended he sample it first to see if he likes the pairing. Whole alone it had a great taste it definitely would have contrasted with his food so super thankful the server let him try it first. The fried pickles were fresh and expertly cooked in a way where you could enjoy the crispy bite followed by the salty/sour pickle juice. We're a little bit disappointed in Denizen's as of the late. We joined the beer club a few months ago, and stopped by occasionally to grab our quarterly beers, grab a bite to eat, and/or grab a beer. We liked that they brought our dogs water and it was super kind when they brought them treats. Other than supporting a neighborhood spot, there is one benefit to the beer club- 10% off a draft (not the food, nor flights- just if you ordered a single beer). Sometimes we got a flight so didn't get the ten percent, sometimes we would each get a draft and get the 10% off... but the last time we went, we each had an entree and between the two of us, three beers and a flight. Our server let us know that since I was the beer account member, and I had a flight and a beer, we'd only get ten percent off the one beer- my boyfriend wouldn't get a discount since he's not the account holder. We were told that was always the rule, but now it's enforced. We were told from the get go that flights don't count, and servers had never discounted those before. What a disappointing way to nickel and dime your customers. As a result, we're no longer beer club members, though we will continue to stop by occasionally as we do enjoy the beer (and the real pretzel that comes on the hook, with the beer cheese- we were told that's temporary but I hope it remains permanent). read more

Denizens Brewing is a brewery that I don't believe ever made my list as far as breweries to try and perhaps it should have been because the beer we had was definitely a five star beer experience. The beer we had was the Born Bohemian Pils which is a Czech style Pilsner. It was extremely refreshing and highly enjoyable. Flavor characteristics with this beer are hoppy, malty and with a clean finish. This was a very well made pilsner that much is for certain. The body of the beer is smooth but also light bodied. I highly recommend this Pilsner should you come by this brewery! read more

Shame on me for not knowing that they had another location outside of downtown Silver Spring. I used to love this place when I lived there. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon their second location. I popped in, to pick up a six pack of One of my favorites, the Third Party Belgian Tripel. The hostess was SO nice. So welcoming. I initially came to the area to try another restaurant, but since it was closed, I decided to eat here instead. It was a beautiful day so I sat decided to enjoy my meal outside. I ordered the Stout marinated steak salad, a small side of fries and a chalice of the 3rd Party Triple. That salad was delicious. So many delightful flavors and textures... And the steak. So tender, so flavorful, perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. My only complaint is that there was not more of it. For what I paid for the salad, I expected a larger portion of steak. The fries were served piping hot and crispy, perfectly salted. Delicious.I only wanted a few, so the size was perfect for me, but if you plan to share, or you want more fries, definitely recommend getting a larger order. Visited on Saturday in route to Trader Joes. Although mostly empty with the exception of about 5-6 tables of patrons the greetings was warm and inviting. I love that they have board games available to use while there. We chose a monopoly card game and sat at the bar. There were plenty of options on tap, even an English ESP beer although highly carbonated which should not be for an english beer. My partner who is British continues to point this out everywhere we go when he gets excited to try. Although the menu is small the options really do include something for everyone. I ordered the blackened salmon which was delicious, well seasoned, cooked perfectly and it came with seasonal veggies which was a sautéed kale with tomatoes that I thoroughly enjoyed. My wife and I tried the OG location in Silver Spring a few weeks ago before they closed. We only stopped by to try a flight and got a 6 pack of the Animal hazy to go (I am a huge beer lover and this is one of the best hazies I've ever had). My impression was the beer was great. My wife and I then were in the Riverdale Park area a few weeks later and I had to come try this location as it is Denizens main and only location now. The location is in a nice walkable shopping and business area with residential nearby. The surrounding area is historically high in crime but this particular area has been gentrified. There is also a free parking garage which in this area is huge and rare. The University of Maryland is right down the street in College Park so I can see this being a nice spot for students with disposable income or parents and family visiting to stop by while in town. There is a decent amount of outdoor table and bench seating outside on the sidewalk. There is a huge indoor seating area including tables, high tops and bar seating. It is a full service bar with beer, wine, cocktails and mocktails. We visited between 3-6 pm on a weekday which fell in their happy hour. All year round beers are $5 for a 16 ounce pour which in today's market is a great deal. They had I believe 4 year round beers. They also had 10 seasonal beers on tap to try. They have a kitchen attached called Catalyst Hot Dogs. The menu is large with hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, fries ect. I tried a Hanks dog (chili and cheese sauce) which was exceptional. It was a little pricey ($10) but I enjoyed it. My wife got the disco fries which is essentially poutine and the portion was HUGE and well worth the $10. I of course had to have a pint of the Animal. The Animal is so crushable and clean and juicy! I also tried to Bohemian Pilsner which was hoppy and clean. My wife got the hibiscus punch since she's pregnant and it was delicious! The service was EXCELLENT. What I really like about this place is there is not a certain server assigned to you. There were at least 6 people working and just rotated through inside and outside attending to everyone. I like this style of serving as you do not have to wait on one person and this place obviously trains their staff to be very attentive. I never had to ask for a refill as they would ask when they saw you were about to finish. You pay at your table as they have a handheld card reader. They also have a large cooler of to go beer and apparel. The stickers are free too which is cool. I get a sticker at every brewery I go to. Came here for the first time with hubby during their happy hour on a Thursday. We ordered their garlic knot dogs, pretzels, and pretzel, chickenwich, and a few beers. Total came out to approximately $95. What's hot - Portions. The garlic knot dogs come out to 5 pieces and about 6-7 pieces of wings. Their pretzel is pretty large and a good size to share among a group. - Quality. Everything was delicious. The chicken in the chickenwich sandwich was tender and not dry. Hubby and I liked the garlic knot dogs the best, especially because they are seasoned with some Parmesan cheese; the dough is a substantial texture, and; the tomato dipping sauce that comes with it is very flavorful. Unfortunately, the knot dogs are pretty oily, which is probably because they're fried. The pretzel is soft and tender and their cheese dipping sauce adds a nice flavor. - Prices for happy hour. Very good! Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 3pm to 6pm and all day on Sundays. Everything we ordered, with the exception of their chickenwich, was discounted, so we saved a decent amount of money. - Location. Easy to find in the plaza and there's a decent amount of parking nearby, including a parking garage. Conveniently located near other businesses and restaurants, as well. What's not - Charge for sauce. The pretzel came with 2 dipping sauces- melted cheese and mustard. We asked for another portion of cheese and they charged us $1.50 for it. Their dipping sauce is about the size of your thumb, so not very large, at all. In addition, the staff didn't tell us there would be an additional charge. Oh well, lesson learned. - Menu selection. Their menu isn't large, which is good, because it's easy to keep track of everything. They have a few vegetarian options, but it doesn't look like they have vegan options, so be prepared. - Time that trivia starts. My husband and I were hoping to take part in their trivia, but it starts at 7:30pm on Thursdays, which can be kind of late, especially since we arrived before 6pm to take advantage of their happy hour. When we asked about their trivia night, one of their staff asked us if we would like to make a reservation for that. They didn't explain the process to us, but we were surprised they asked us about reserving our spots for their trivia. - Service. They appear to have a decent number of staff, at least while we were there. However, their service is pretty haphazard. We had to ask for our water glasses to be refilled. It was difficult for us to flag down service when we needed it, as well. It wasn't terribly busy while we were there. My point is to be prepared. Pub Pass DC was the reason for venturing out to Denizens Brewing. Ironically, I was just telling my partner it was National Hot Dog Day, and as we were turning the corner to the brewery, there happened to be a huge hot dog sign right in front. The space is HUGE and very clean. I love the look of it overall. The bartender was great. He let us have a little sip of anything we wanted to try since we told him it was our first time in. I ended up getting the Creature and loved it. It was Happy Hour AND they were having a special on their hot dogs. They have quite a few artisan dogs and of course, a plain jane dog that happened to be just $1 all day for the holiday ;) I fused two of the hot dogs and ended up with a chili cheese dog with mustard. So boom. My son and I came to this restaurant for the first time to give it a try. Everything was fine, the server was bubbly and kind. The place seemed cool. We ordered fries, two hot dogs a salad, one dirty martini and two waters. Service was quick food came out and the presentation was enticing. I started taking pictures to post on my IG and noticed hair on my son's fries and mold on the tomatoes on my salad. I waived down one of the servers and explained that the fries had hair in it (showed him) and the tomatoes on the salad had mold. I also explained that we would not be eating at the establishment due to the items mentioned above. The waiter told me the tomato did not have mold on it and he would take it to the kitchen to ask if it was mold. We waited for him to come back out and he came back out with a receipt and said he took the food off. I scanned through the receipt and it totaled a little over $18 for the drink that I did not drink and gratuity. Thee audacity! I kindly went inside and explained to the server that I was not paying for the drink or the food because I know longer felt comfortable eating or drinking at the establishment, due to the hair and mold on the food. He SNAPPED at me. He told me I had to pay for the drink because he just spent time making it. I again, calmly explained to him that I was not paying and he gestured with his hands in a shooing motion and said okay get out. Horrible experience and establishment! I have never been treated so foul at a restaurant. I urge you to inspect your food, utensils and cups before consuming anything from this place. I would not recommend this place. AT ALL!! I would not give place a single star! I had to give one to post my review. 0 stars for customer service and food!! My wife and I opted to have lunch at this Denizens Brewing Company location at 4550 Van Buren St. Riverdale Park, Maryland when their doors opened at 12:00pm Noon. We arrived a few minutes early before doors opened, and we watched staff raise umbrellas above outdoor seating and as it was a pleasant Summer day with a light breeze, we chose to eat outside. Our server was a young man named Carlos and he was amazing. He greeted us almost immediately after opening time with drink & food menus in hand and my wife & I both accepted the invitation to order an opening round of beers. I ordered the Third Party, a Belgium Tripel Beer with an 9.1% and my wife ordered a seasonal lighter option. Waters were brought out without prompting. For lunch, my wife ordered the Chicken Tenders & Fries and an appetizer of Fried Pickles. I mulled over several appealing options, including what looked like a healthy grain bowl, but ultimately picked the Bacon Mac & Cheese. The Fried Pickles came out first with Remoulade Sauce and they were delicious, perfectly prepared with light crispy coating, but also tangy like you would expect a pickle slice to be. While we ate our appetizer and sipped our beers, we observed Carlos going above and beyond to other patrons seated at other outside table seating. He brought baby chairs out to accommodate a family that had babies in tow; and he delivered bowls of water to two other tables for people who brought their dogs with them. My wife was very pleased with her order of Chicken Tenders & Fries that also came with two different dipping sauces (one looked like ranch and the other like a hot honey mustard). My order of Bacon Mac & Cheese was also delicious, with decent chunks of bacon and the macaroni noodles were firm and al dente, with a creamy cheese sauce. The light Summer breeze enticed us to stay for a second round of beers. Carlos cleared plates as we lounged and took in the sounds of light music in the distance. It was a very nice lunch experience and we left Carlos a well earned 25% tip. The next time we're in the area, we'll definitely come back to sample other menu items. read more

Came here on a Wednesday evening with friends (party of 4). I like how there's the option of indoor or outdoor seating which are both very well. The area was very clean, which I always appreciate. The hosts and hostesses were also very patient with us as I was waiting for the rest of the party to arrive. The servers were very knowledgeable and answered our questions easily. Also, I think it's great that you're able to sample some of the beer before getting a full drink. Food and drinks came out quickly. The disco fries were big enough to feed 2 people and they were very flavorful, reminded me a bit of poutine, which I'm sure is the point. The service was really good. Our waitress came in a timely manner, provided recommendations and made sure we knew the specials available. The beer was good. The happy hour prices made them even better. The food was lackluster. Lackluster is a generous adjective. We ordered deviled eggs, shrimp and grits, pineapple mumbo jumbo wings (1lb), and onion rings. The wings were delicious! As for the others: The shrimp and grits has a lasting sour taste that ruins the dish; almost like the dairy used was expired. It lacks in flavor but the cheesy texture and plating is great. The deviled eggs weren't bad, just bland. The onion rings are beautifully huge. But flavorless. Once the small ketchup cup runs dry, you quickly realize the only flavor is grease. In all, I'd come back for drinks and wings. The atmosphere was great. Especially when you consider the great weather outside. Just don't come expecting a great meal. read more

Great brewery with fantastic service and some pretty good food. I got to try the Lowest Lord ESB (English-style ale) which was really good--floral, slightly bitter. I also ordered the pulled pork sandwich with the fries. The fries were good but I wish the sandwich had more sauce--it was a bit dry. The cauliflower nuggets are very good but they are pretty spicy. If you want to beat the crowds, try going on a weekday night. It was pretty empty when we came. read more

It was about 20 minutes before closing and although the hostess made sure to let us know this, the bartender welcomed us with menus and recommendations. Over the years, I've had a mix of good and bad experiences with the staff/management/food at this Riverdale location, but things have improved a lot over the past year. I actually removed my old review because it doesn't seem relevant anymore. The current managers, servers, and bartenders are friendly and helpful. Previously, there were issues with the staff and managers, ranging from being inattentive, to not knowing about the beer or food, to being downright rude. All of this seems to have changed. Also, now that they're partnering with Catalyst Hot Dogs, the food is much more consistent and interesting, although a bit pricey. They have vegetarian and vegan options, salads, and a kids menu. Before this, food at this location was totally hit or miss (throughout several menu overhauls), and sometimes dishes took forever or came out completely incorrect, even when they weren't busy. They have always hosted fun events like trivia night, and have lots of outdoor seating that's perfect for people watching. read more
