Having lived overseas for a bit and falling in love with the doner kebab, I have been eyeing Shondiz for a little while. Thanks to a slower week at work, I snuck out today to grab a sandwich. I was hoping they wouldn't be closed with the holidays and thankfully they were not. Of course I ordered the doner kebab sandwich but without onions. The sandwich was a big one with shaved lamb, tomatoes, lettuce, pickled cabbage and a spicy sauce that pulled it all together beautifully. The lamb was fatty but in a delicious way and the pickled cabbage helped to undercut a little of the fattiness which is a perfect harmony in your mouth. The sauce had a hint of spice to it which again married beautifully with the lamb. While this isn't an exact replica of what I had overseas it was delicious nonetheless and I would definitely keep going back. read more

I've worked in downtown Denver for over 8 years and Shondiz has always been a staple. I've been going here since before they were a permanent fixture on 16th Street Mall. The breakfast burritos are the best to be had, hands down. For $4.50, you're getting fresh eggs, potatoes, grilled veggies, spicy sauces, and cheese if you like. And it's a lot of food, definitely could fill you up for the entire work day if you're having a late breakfast. Of course there are a ton of breakfast burrito options in Denver, but for both the quality and the price of this, it's hard to beat. If you're open to spicy foods, ask the owner to make it as spicy as possible. He'll bring the heat which makes the food even more appealing, since so many places say they can make their food 'spicy' and it still falls flat. The falafel is also incredible. Freshly fried falafels are added to a warm pita, with tons of additions. Just a word to the wise, call ahead to avoid having to stand in the long lines that form around lunch time. read more

I was craving a hearty breakfast burrito and came here after being referred by my friend. First impressions are everything and once I got there, I was the only one in line so I went straight up to the window to order. I had a hard time trying to figure out if the man working in the booth was flat out ignoring me, or when it would be my turn to order. Turns out he was pretty backed up from people doing 'to go' orders. It would have been nice to be a little more clear in the communication because I felt like a fool standing there staring. From the looks of other yelp reviews, others have had this problem as well. If I were more in a hurry I would have left, however I was off work so I decided to stick it out for a green chili smothered breakfast burrito. I got to watch my burrito being made and food was shoved around,thrown into corners, and an overall lack of caring as it was prepared. Once I finally got my burrito, I shuffled home to eat it which I found a curly black hair in it. I completely understand that mistakes happen but I noticed when he was preparing the food that there were no gloves used, and no hair nets when this man has a full head of hair. Overall not the best experience, I wish it were better. I'm always willing to give places more chances so hopefully this can be a learning experience. read more

Or maybe we should call it Shondiz. Yelp reviews rave about the wonderful shawarma, gyros, and doner served by the two brothers in a food cart located at 16th and Glenarm. And well they should. The pressed and spiced roll of lamb is wonderfully flavorful. Some reviewers complain about them using too much garlic in their preparations but for me that's one of the things that make their dishes so very tasty. Too much garlic? Eat an Altoid and get over it. Life is short. Eat what tastes great. And call it what you like. Those words (shawarma/gyros/doner) all mean the same thing but in different languages. This place is good, really good. Like some of the previous yelpers, I, too, had been looking for a Doner Kebab ever since my backpacking trip in Europe about 5 years ago. Wandering the streets of Budapest, Prague, and Paris looking for cheap eats, I found lots of little Doner Kebab shops with their beautiful meats slowly rotating in front of the vertical cooker. The aroma was intoxicating, unfortunately, I had not been able to find a place remotely close to those European shops back here in the States until I was in Denver attending a conference at the Convention Center. I was drawn to this little street stand like a moth to light in the middle of hot summer day as soon as I saw the glistening rotating meat! All for just $6.50! This kebab is definitely legit and comparable to those in Europe. Their chilli hot sauce was absolutely amazing as was their tzatziki sauce. My only regret is that I probably will not be back in Downtown Denver for awhile since I'm on the east coast. Sigh! read more

I've been looking for a kebab since we visited Berlin. I dream about it. Finally found it in downtown Denver. Get it with garlic sauce.

This is my second attempt at a review...Yelp pulled my first one for no good discernible reason. I visited this location about two weeks ago while in Denver at 10:45 am on a Tuesday. The worker (owner ?) in the food stand refused to cook up a shawarma for me for the stated reason that lunch does not begin until 11:00 am. That was after waiting at least 3 minutes for him to even recognize my presence with a greeting of any sort. Seemed overwhelmed with cooking up one breakfast burrito at the time.... I could see perfectly "good to go" shawarma rotating on the spit. That's just not a reasonable response. I happily went down the 16th Street mall to another shawarma business and received fantastic food and service at 10:50 am. You can find my review about that alternative if you look at my profile. This business seems to have an ongoing issue with providing good service, let alone good service with a smile. Take a look at the other negative reviews on the site - many from fellow Yelp Elites. Also, be aware that this business' score is higher than it probably would be if the owner was not so aggressive at challenging reviews just like mine for supposedly violating Yelp review policies. Was all hyped up with it supposedly being about like the döner kebabs in Germany, but nope. 30 min drive wasted + parking fee. Update your damn hours. Yelp says 5pm, Google says 6pm for Saturdays. So, I was strolling the mall and I happened on Shondiz per the recommendation of one of my co-workers. As I approached the food cart, the guy inside asked if I wanted a sample their meat. While I usually have a standing response for guys who ask me such things, I simply smiled, said "sure," and then grabbed the offering from between the tongs he presented before my face. I fully anticipated that this would be just like any gyro that I had tasted, but, lo, was I ever mistaken. The meat was moist and quite flavorful, so I immediately asked for the Döner kebab sandwich. Apparently, Döner kebab is a traditional Turkish sandwich that is readily found at street vendors. (WiseGeek[dot]com, 2010) The sandwich looked like a gyro: freshly grilled meat, thinly sliced from the spit and splayed out onto a slice of pita bread. it is then adorned with lettuce, tzatziki sauce, pickled red cabbage, and sliced tomatoes. In less than 5 minutes after walking away from the stand, I had inhaled my sandwich, and I really wasn't that hungry, but it was OH SO GOOD!!! Every time I go to a new city the first thing I do is Yelp around for "Doner Kebab". This has been the first time EVER that I've actually found an authentic style Doner like you would have in Europe! Everything was fresh, hot and amazing! The owner let us sample each meat (chicken or lamb) first before we decided what Doner to order. We are headed back through Denver on Tuesday and can't wait to come back for a second sandwich! My partner always made fun of me for my fruitless Doner search/infatuation. I've known my friend and coworker for 3 years exactly and since day one, I have known that her favorite food in the whole entire world is Doner Kebab from when she ate it in Australia almost 10 years ago. After searching for over a year or so and posting a yelp talk about finding said meal, I was so excited when I received a message from Mark T. saying that if my friend and I were still interested to check out Shondiz on the 16th Street Mall. She's had the Australia version of the Doner so we each got the chicken with all the dressings (purple cabbage, chili sauce, lettuce tomato, tzatziki sauce) and onions, of course. Except we got ours in what reminds me of a tortilla or laffa. We also got an order of falafel, a can of pop and a Mediterranean lemonade, all for about $12.00! We sat in the sun on the 16th street mall and devoured the deliciousness in front of us. I wasn't so much a fan of the Mediterranean "rose water" lemonade. It sorta tasted like I was drinking incense but it definitely could be for some people! Next time we'll get the lamb right off the spit which looked so delicious and I'll ask for extra tomatoes. Shondiz totally deserves 5 stars because it was relatively quick for such a small cart. The two guys working, one cooking the other greeting and taking money, were extremely nice! They take credit card but there wasn't a spot to tip, so make you sure you take some cash or change. They definitely deserve it. It's located right in front of Hard Rock. This paltry one-star rating isn't because I got a bad meal at Shondiz, it's because I wasn't allowed to have a meal at Shondiz. When I arrived, eager to try the Yelp-lauded breakfast burrito, the proprietor told me that since I hadn't called in, he couldn't accommodate me for 15 minutes. Not particularly nicely, either. I'd give another star for service if he'd at least pretended to regret he wouldn't serve me. Fine. Do what you gotta do. But this was my first impression of Shondiz. I'm not likely to make any effort to go back. The person who shows up at your place of business - money in hand, asking to support you - should probably earn a cut in the line of people who quite literally phoned it in. read more

I was SO excited when I found out that I could get a Döner Kebab in Denver. I lived in Germany back in the mid 90s and loved having fresh döner mit schafkäse. It hit the spot, especially after a late night of partying like a 20 year old (which I was at the time!) These döner kebabs at Shondiz were quite awesome, even though I'm not in my 20s anymore and it was the middle of the day. Ok, so maybe this WAS the first döner I had while sober. Anyway, I got mine with feta, which was great. The bread was really fresh and the meat was moist and well spiced. I would maybe ask for extra onions and more spicy sauce next time, but that's just the way I like 'em! Come on down to 16th & Glenarm, and grab a döner to go. The stand is run by two friendly Iranian brothers, and they are worth getting to know! One speaks German also... they take pride in their cuisine and customer service, and it shows. Working through lunch? You can call ahead at (303) 351-4492 and order, and they will have your lunch waiting for you - you can drive across 16th on Glenarm, and they'll bring it to your car! Awesome service. They have a little space heater you can stand by on cold days while you wait. Go get one on any weekday. This is the best Mediterranean food that I have had in Denver. To make it even better, they have the best service I have gotten in a VERY long time. They will let you sample anything that you would like to and always give you a falafel while you are waiting for your order to be prepared. I stumbled upon this cart while I was going to get a salad from Cook's Fresh Market. I was enticed with all of the sampling they were offering me. After trying their meat and hummus just that one time I was hooked. I have been back 2 times a week since then. 15 years ago I had a Doner Kebab in France. Here in Denver, I have been searching for any place that makes Doner Kebabs. Finally someone has brought them to Denver! Service is fast, pleasant and the food is excellent! The price is reasonable given the prices of food downtown. Try getting the hot sauce on them and add a little Ranch to the Kebabs. It's excellent! Two of my coworkers and I tried the beef and lamb as well as the chicken Kebabs, and both tasted great. These aren't gyros. I don't like those nearly as much. Too much lamb. This meat is thinly sliced and spiced wonderfully. As for the rosewater lemonade, it's a great unique feature. I suspect people will either love it or hate it but it's a unique flavor and worth sampling. When you're waiting, watch out for the mall bus! It gets close to the food line. Shondiz food truck is located on the 16th street mall in the middle of the bus path. This location is super important for me, in particular, because as my friend Dan and I walk to this location, the Romanian dance song gets in my blood and I have to dance. Fist pumps, high kicks, body pops... I am very engaged in the dancing while Dan orders the burrittos. It's important to understand the song coming out of the speakers is good, in the bad "This is so bad" music that it becomes funny and joyful. But that is what the owner, Ahmed, projects as he serves you. Pure joy! As he carves the meet off the rotating rotisserie, preparing lunch for the later hours, his enthusiasm for what he is doing is apparent. He makes the burritos in front of you, cracking the eggs against the skillet, and masterfully pulling the shell apart with two fingers, dropping the eggs into the sizzle. There are other burrito food carts on the 16th street Mall, but this one takes the cake for freshness (I've tried at least 5). Another fantastic perk to Shondiz' is the call ahead option. You call, Ahmed answers, gets your order, and starts it while you walk that way. He has hot options, several meats, and breakfast-style b'tto's, and he has a lunch. Prices are super-competitive, $3.75 for one b'tto compared to a restaurant-style from nearby Cook's market that could cost twice as much. OH!
