    Sauerkraut, best salad

Simply amazing. Der Jaeger is an unassuming family-owned German restaurant in a small PA town. We recently went on a 15-day food adventure around Germany, and I can confidently say that the flavors were better than most! Everything seemed so authentic, home style, with the perfect balance of flavors. We had the chicken schnitzel, beef stroganoff, beet salad, and sauerkraut. We are excited to explore the rest of the menu! While waiting, the family has an eclectic collection of antiques, art, furniture, and decor. Janusc is an art enthusiast, so he will he more than happy to give you a tour and background on the pieces. Everyone is super helpful and friendly. You're sure to have a great time! Plan ahead: You will probably need a reservation, so call ahead! It's also BYOB, so bring your favorite German beer.

We returned to Der Jaeger on Aug 26th. We ordered the Stroganoff, suerbrauten, red cabbage, kraut and potato dumplings and of course the strudel. My husband ordered the goulash to go as well. We just love the intimacy of this place. Surrounded by antiques and good food. You just know your going to get delicious food. With very limited seating you don't have crowds or loud people. Love that. Looking forward to returning in october.

    Are you Pet friendly?

Pet friendly? PA law states no animals within an establishment where food is prepared and served. Always call the place as the owners don’t get time to answer on here.…

Are they open in the evening?

You do need to call and make a reservation. If there are reservations she will stay open. It is a very lovely, but small establishment, run by a wife and husband! They need to plan nightly, thus the need for reservations!

We got the pit master combo which was ribs, chicken and brisket! We got 2 sides Mac and cheese and Cole slaw. Sooooo good!!! Unfortunately, this place didn't live up to the great reviews I read. Maybe it was just a bad day? Or maybe I should've heeded to the bad reviews? I was contemplating about whether to give this place 1 star or 2 stars, but I decided to give 2 stars because the person working at the counter was super nice and super patient. ***In a rush? Skip to the end for my tips.*** First of all, there was so many items not available. Many items were crossed off the menu, which was fine because we were there for the bbq. But then, for the ribs, they only had rib pieces for combos, no half racks. They didn't have collard greens. They had briskets, but they were cold, so they wouldn't have been good. So, we ended up ordering the Pitmaster combo, but had to substitute the brisket because it was cold. So, we got 2 pieces of ribs instead. Luckily, we were able order and get the pork belly. And then, we were accidentally charged for half a chicken, but they don't do refunds. So, we decided to just eat the chicken, but they didn't have any chicken left, so we patiently chose to substitute it with ribs, but then, they ran out of ribs, too, so we substituted it with pork belly. Also, the sides were not good at all. The cornbread was dry and crumbly. The mac and cheese was horrible. It was simply undercooked pasta with lukewarm cheese sauce poured over it. It was almost inedible. And, the coleslaw was terrible. These are all important sides that you would expect to be good at barbeque joint, but they were all disappointing. If the bbq was amazing, all would be forgiven, but the bbq was just okay and what made it worse was that the food was at best lukewarm, not hot at all. Supposedly there was something wrong with keeping the food hot? But this definitely didn't help to alleviate the already bad experience. Maybe if the food was hot, it would have tasted better. The person working was super apologetic and was trying to be super accommodating, so despite our frustration, we tried to be understanding and patient. The same thing happened to another customer and she also tried to be less frustrated because the person working was so apologetic. One good thing were the sauces, especially the one that starts out sweet but ends up being spicy. All their sauces were good, especially if you mix them all together. And, we went at lunchtime on a Saturday, which would normally be a busy day and time for businesses, but there were so many things unavailable. They said that there would be more food available for dinner, so hopefully the dinner crowd were able to order what they wanted. Supposedly they opened recently and it seems like they are still working out the kinks. Maybe I'll give this place another chance a year later when they get everything figured out, but for now, will have to continue the search for a good barbeque place in this area. Tips: - They don't give refunds, so please make sure that your order is correct before you pay. Or even double check that they have what you want before you pay if you don't want to be thinking of substitutions. - Or you should call ahead of time to see what food is available beforehand. - You get free refills for the fountain drinks. - For ordering, you order at the counter and then, they bring your food to your table. It seems like they also have a pager system that they might use when it's busy. - It is a bit of a wait to get your food, so please be patient and hopefully you are not in a rush. It even says on their receipt "Please be patient due to staff shortage its not the employees fault and its not the restaurants fault, Thank you for your patience." - There is outdoor and indoor seating. - They had 3 sauces, but they were not labeled. The red one seemed to be hot sauce and the brown one seemed like barbeque sauce. And, the sauce I liked the best (sweet and spicy) was also red but had pepper seeds in them and was labeled with an X. - Chicken and Rib Combo includes a quarter chicken and 2 pieces of ribs with 2 sides and cornbread - Just the Pork Combo includes pulled pork and 2 pieces of ribs with 2 sides and cornbread - Pitmaster Combo includes brisket, pulled pork, 2 rib pieces, and a quarter chicken with 2 sides and cornbread

Stopped by while on the road from New Haven to Memphis. During COVID. My girlfriend (read: hungry…read more"navigator") required sustenance. She saw this on Yelp and told me they had gyros, so I was in. It's a bit off the interstate, but not deterringly so. As we walked up, the place looked deserted (and now I was hungry, and to that, get behind me apprehension). The young lady behind the make-shift to go counter was delightful; I was pretty well taken aback by the mismatch of desertion meets cheerfulness. The paradox was resolved when she explained we were in a resort area (I imagined the kind of folk from Dirty Dancing frequenting a nearby body of water nearby over summers), and here we were come late December. As for the food: the gyro was pretty run-of-the-mill, but good. And this is coming from a gyro snob who's been all over (in case you're wondering, the best was found at a now defunct place called Yianni's Wraps in Jackson, Mississippi...think Seinfeld's soup Nazi but a Greek guy who espoused the virtues of drinking ouzo warm, melting cheese to the bottom of the inside of a pita with a blow torch before piling in meat, and finally, that he did not serve fries, but rather sliced, cooked, potatoes with Adriatic Sea salt, but I digress). The fries (which this establishment does indeed serve), were exceptional, I'd recommend trying two different styles, though I forget which ones we had. The aspect that sticks out most is the value. We obtained a bounty for a pittance.

I ordered a half rack of ribs, side of mac and cornbread. OMG. The ribs were tender, with an amazing dry rub and BBQ on the side. They were a nice size with a great smoke flavor. Speaking of smoke, next time I go, I'm getting the bucket of mac. Creamy, smokey, spoons full of comfort. Finally the cornbread. Probably one of the best cornbreads I've ever had; it is more in line with a pound cake. I could eat an entire loaf. Smooth and sweet. I got my order to go. Great customer service!

I was on 309 North and passed it (it was on the left hand side). So, I pull a u-ey (is that how one abbreviates U turn). I was excited because I saw the smoker outside with a ton of smoke coming out of the chimney. I go in, order a full rack of ribs (why not? There was that smoker outside pumping out smoke). I was SO disappointed by how hard the ribs were. They were not tender AT ALL. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but I definitely have had WAY better ribs. I would not recommend this place. Update: owner responded with sincere intentions. I WILL give these guys a second try. I'll post the results afterwards.
