What an amazing place. Right away from the start of calling for a reservation and getting an "I expect you to behave from the owner" to walking out the door after dinner our group of 6 was treated like family. We sat ordered some drinks and food the went exploring. The inside is loaded with antiques of all kinds from old shotguns and muzzle loaders to paintings and news papers and furniture and animal mounts. The food was great, everyone ordered something different then we passed everything around and shared a little of each one. The owners a husband and wife along with some friends of theirs who were there pretty much treated everyone like family. Upon Leaving warm hugs and thanks from the wife for everyone and a solid handshake from the husband as well topped off the feeling like family vibe. I highly recommend going for dinner but will say make a reservation for earlier around 5 ish and give yourself plenty of time because it is indeed like meeting an old friend or family member with all the interaction and talking. read more

I would have given this place 5 stars ,The food is excellent but they did have a dog in the kitchen area ,The place is actually a house with menus that are arranged by appointment , The owner is very friendly and if this place was in Germany the dog would be allowed ,I was there about 4 years ago and like i said the food was very good and authentic !The place is like an Antique lovers Museum with many interesting items that are for sale on 2 floors ! Had a uniquely lovely dinner here recently as we've been trying to get here to experience genuine German cooking and we were delighted. Well tonight was a very unique dining experience. What an amazingly cool place. So much history it's like eating in a museum. Authentic German Food. Truly hand made authentic German. Everything was delicious. We had 4 of us and ordered 4 different dishes along with sausage trial appetizer. So delicious! Chicken Schnitzel ,Veal Schnitzel, Beef rouladen and Chicken Paprikash. All was excellent. Now I just want to say we hung around and just talked with the 2 owners, husband and wife. Thank you for a great conversation that we see eye to eye. It was a little difficult to get a reservation - but once that was done and we arrived, I quickly realized why it was so hard - they only have 3-4 tables and only do one seating per table, per night (as the owner informed us)!! We got there a little early and they were still cooking for the other table so they were not ready for us - we looked around at the antiques to kill some time, but that is really not my thing. We finally sat and were given and very extensive menu. We had soup, dinner and dessert. All was good. My only complaint is that you can see and hear everything that is happening in the kitchen - lots of opening and closing of the microwave, but with such an extensive menu it's not that surprising. It is a minimum of 2 hours from beginning to end, which would have been fine but it was the middle of winter and we were freezing (I mean completely frozen) the entire time. I was looking for a home style German meal near Hawley, PA and found Der Jaeger online. I'm new to the area and this place was the closest to my location and I wanted to treat my mother to a good German meal. Their website is not spectacular and walking in the front door I thought I had walked into someone's house accidentally. I realized quickly that this would be a dining experience unlike any I've ever had. Only 3 tables and reservations are a must... why? Because your meal is cooked to order! We were greeted by the cook/waitress/owner after sitting we were joined by her husband/bartender/dishwasher. Before we arrived I knew exactly what we were going to order Wiener Schnitzel for me and Sauerbraten for my mom. These are staples in German cuisine so why not stick to what you know right? I ordered a beer and the bartender brought 2 lagers and pulled up a chair. If you are put off by this, I would suggest going somewhere else. For me, it felt like I had walked into my uncles house and we were catching up on old times. So yes, the food took a while to arrive but you do get some homemade soda bread and pumpernickel to hold you over. Did I mention the food is made to order? Jaeger Schnitzel not on the menu but I asked for a special order and the cook simply said sure whatever you like. The food came and this is what sets the place apart... Fantastic food. Potato dumplings, creamed spinach and red cabbage rounded off the main course. Traditional and oh so tasty. Peach cake for dessert if you are lucky enough to go when it's on the menu. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure whatever you order will be just as good. After dessert I just had to go look at the antique store which to be honest is the entire upstairs and most of the downstairs. I'm pretty sure you could make an offer to buy just about anything in the place. Unfortunately, I do not run the decorating department in my house so I was only able to look around. I will have to bring my wife back soon. I cannot wait to go back and sample more of the wonderful items on the menu. We just love the intimacy of this place. Surrounded by antiques and good food. You just know your going to get delicious food. With very limited seating you don't have crowds or loud people. Wow, far exceeded expectations. First, the meal is served in the middle of an antique shop, but not just any ordinary antique shop. Their collection contains such a variety of antiques that I could have spent several hours just walking around. That experience in itself was worth the visit. Janusc (outside of being so friendly and accommodating) cooked the best smoked ribs and lamb chops I've ever had, and that includes both ribs and chops cooked by Michelin rated chefs. The potato's melted in your mouth, and the Bred dumplings were incredible. Make sure to try the beet salad as well. I have to say that this is the best German food I have eaten since I lived in Germany in the early 90s. The schnitzel was fantastic. Breaded and cooked perfectly. I loved the spaetzle. The owners are both extremely friendly. The man that greeted us and brought us our food was actually from Poland but his wife who cooked all of the food is from the former Germany. They were both extremely friendly. It's an odd experience to have dinner in an antique store but it was very nice. I highly recommend going here but you definitely need reservations. read more

What a meal! We had a lovely experience at this truly unique restaurant. So much fun, such good food. I definitely recommend going in a large group because we were unable to to finish all the food we ordered and there were like 5 more things I wanted. Sauerbraten is a must! If you're dining with children, I think this would be a good choice, as it's a little sweet and it comes with lingonberry jam. Potato pancakes are also a must, they were excellent. These are both call ahead items, so give the chef/owner/server/host a heads up and see if she can make them when you go. The rouladen was great, and so were all the sides. Loved the sauerkraut. My husband and the other gentleman at the table ordered stroganoff and they brought a family sized bowl of spaetzle that was more than enough for all of us. As I have been googling for places to eat in the area I happen to find Der Jaeger. A German restaurant in the other side of the lake. I called to make sure it was open and was told they have one more table for 2. When we get there I open the door to find like we are walking into someone's home filled with interesting antiques and just a few tables. Janusz greeted us and immediately got served some beer and hot tea (we found out you can BYOB) and a warm assorted bread basket. We had ordered borscht and mushroom soup, both were very good. As we waited for dinner to be made, Janusz had us walk around and explore his collectibles he has that extends to the second floor. It was like a museum, the building used to be a hotel and went through many transitions throughout the years. Janusz and his wife Svetlana acquired it after half of it was burnt down in a fire to be able to showcase their antiques as well as start a small family restaurant (his wife is a chef from Germany) It's fascinating to see all the various items and artwork collected over the years. We come back to our table and have our dinner waiting for us. I ordered beef stroganoff with spatzle and my husband the beef roulade and potato dumplings. The dinner was excellent and we left ridiculously full. We talked to janusz throughout our time there and it was so nice to learn about him, his family and his history. We felt like we met a new family member we never knew we had. We look forward in returning very soon and bring our family this one of kind dining experience! read more

Apparently they double booked us with another table. They had record of our reservation but not of the other parties. WE were the ones kicked out and this is just bad business. Very unique and satisfying experience. It is located in a small lake town, which if your from a big city, will be a nice fresh breath of air. On top of that the place is like a time machine. Almost everything they have is antique. Even the tea we had was served in antiques!
