Went last night, 12/12/25. The place was packed! Barely a spot to stand as we waited for our table. We had reservations and as busy as it was we were seated only 5 minutes past our time. The food was amazing as well as the service! You would expect some hiccups with it that packed, but no, everything was great! This is my second trip to here and was extremely happy both times. If you are looking for some delicious authentic German cuisine, this is the place! If I was to nitpick, the only thing is there is really no cellphone service there, but! WOW! I've been waiting to try this spot for so long and I'm bummed that it took so long because our table was amazed. We went for a late lunch, which was a perfect idea to split tons of items and try a bit of everything. Everything was delectable, no misses!! A delicious and hearty stop after a morning hike is just what I needed. Super lively inside with a fantastic beer selection. Feels like a place that locals and weekenders visit alike. There was a food truck outside that served limited fare, but I Ordered some schnitzel inside to go so I could eat with some friends that opted for the truck food. I've lived in this area my entire life, and somehow missed this restaurant. First off, it is sooo cute and cozy inside. The bartenders and staff go above and beyond and they're so friendly. This place is always busy. Yet, you always feel well looked after and never feel rushed. Our server tomight was Alicia, she was friendly, attentive and never felt she was overbearing. I ordered the sauerbraten with red cabbage and spaetzle (spelling?). It was delicious! There were schnitzel dishes, chicken thighs confit and they even have vegan dishes now ! And I'm not talk some impossible burger but real well prepared food. There is a nice wine list serving some local, German, Italian and French wines. Everyone loved their meal. The place is crowded and a little noisy but it goes with the atmosphere. The check for the four of us without tip was $300. But that included a bottle of wine, two cocktails and a single malt. Worth every penny. If you think you'd like to try it don't just show up, you'll probably be disappointed with being turned away or told there's a two hour wait. They take reservations!! My grandmothers were German, my Grandpa was Austrian and this is the cuisine I grew up on. The staff was great but they need to stop dressing their waitstaff in dirndls. Most of them are not German and Dirndls are primarily worn on holidays and for weddings. No one is wandering around Germany every day in Dirndls and Lederhosen. It wasn't bad but I don't think I'd make a return trip. I had Sauerbraten and Mom had Rouladen. They were good but not as good as we make at home. Most of their wines were of the sweet German type, not the really good dry rieslings or the awesome Gruner Veltlener wines of Austria. read more

The restaurant is really poorly run. Having a reservation at 7:30 means you could be seated at 8 and get your entree at 9:10. There is no explanation or apology whatsoever for the delay. The service staff were nice but overworked. The only good food we ordered for a party of 4 were the potato pancakes and the sauerkraut. Burgers, pretzels, and the sausages were okay but nothing to write home about (even to 4 starving people!). My schnitzel was so bland, and dry, that it was hard to cut. One person in our party said he had much better diner food in German speaking Switzerland schools, and I believe him. 1st time to the Mountain Brauhaus and we'll definitely be back! Set off 87 as you drive through New Paltz, you are immediately transported into the deep mountain valley with limited to no cell service. Reservations are highly encouraged and they were prompt on honoring our time that we made the reservation for. Many walk ins tried to get a table but only space at the bar was available as they were fully booked with reservations! We started with the Rueben strudel that I wanted to loved but it honestly wasn't that hot nor crisp but the accompanying sauces were delicious. The children's portions are extreme fair sized and the chicken was a huge hit! All the dinner platters were hardy and delicious with leftovers to take home, the highlights we're definitely the potato pancakes and that gravy for the pot roast I wish I could have bought a quart to bring home! From the first call to book our reservation to the hostess that seated us to our server and waitstaff that assisted her we're all very friendly and on point. Amazing German cuisine. We both had the chicken schnitzel prepared different ways - very good and very large portions. Next time we are splitting one dish. Each entree comes with a salad and we had the house onion vinaigrette. Also, we started with onion rings - they were great however, we should have started with the barvarian pretzel from the looks of it, it was much better and more of a classic. Service was great, plenty of people around filling up water glasses and taking empty plates. We also were seated with a nice view of the mountains so ambiance was good. I would highly recommend making a reservation- yes, it's old school calling to make a reservation however very worth it as we walked in and were seated immediately. Deeply disappointed with our recent experience at The Mountain Brauhaus. We have been here before...Maybe five years ago and were very pleased with the meal we ordered. Fast forward five years to yesterday and how things have changed. We started by sharing a Reuben Strudel and Absolutely Perfect. It was perfect in every way. That's where the fun ended. Our foursome ordered These four menu items and this is how they went: 1.SPRING CHICKEN SALAD - House Salad with Grilled Murray's Chicken, Local Apples, Toasted Almonds, Oranges, Basil Pesto & Citrus Vinaigre"e $19.00 Assessment: A tiny amount of salad with EXTREMELY dry Chicken strips. 2. A LA HOLSTEIN - Wiener Schnitzel w/ Fried Egg, Anchovies, Capers, Spaetzle & Seasonal Vegetable Pork $30.00 Assessment : A paper thin piece of Schnitzel-ed pork with way too many capers, sardines and anchovies. So much Tart and pucker from those ingredients made it very hard to really enjoy the Pork. The pork was quite "flavored" by all that tartness even after removing all of it from the plate. 3. SAUERBRATEN - Choice Beef marinated in Vinegar & Spices; w/ Sweet & Sour Gravy, Spaetzle & Braised Red Cabbage $28.00 Assessment: The flavor was on point, the spaetzle was great, Red Cabbage was the perfect accompaniment for the braised beef. However, the Beef was so over cooked and dry it required a sip of drink after each bite. Kinda sucked the wind out of the entire dish. This cut of beef requires 200 degrees (exactly) to render the fat and break down the meat fibers properly. This meat was brought to a minimum of 210-215 , which cooked the meat to beyond the point that it could retain any moisture. 4. HÜNCHENSANDWICH - Bell & Evans Chicken (Grilled or Schnitzel-ed) with Melted Emmenthaler Cheese, Black Forest Ham, Garlic-Parsley Aioli, Baby Greens & Tomato, on a toasted Pretzel Bun; served w/ Fresh-Cut Fries or House Salad, Coleslaw & Pickle $18.00 Assessment: Even all the delicious sounding ingredients couldn't help that (exactly like the Spring Chicken Salad) Super dry Chicken placed on that bun with such a tiny amount (maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoons worth) of the Garlic-Parsley Aioli ( you could still clearly see the bun through the Aioli), which could have ....may have.... helped that chicken out a drop at least. Final Thoughts: They've been in business since Moses wore short pants. A degree of complacency has developed to where they're just doing it by the numbers and sending it out the door like they have forever. Management has stopped tasting what's coming out of the kitchen for whatever reason. I know this because if someone was randomly checking what the cooks are putting out, they would have caught all the over cooked/ dried out meat being served. So close....yet so disappointingly DRY. We will not be making the drive (one hour) again. Time marches on....things change.....Not always for the better. read more

Hubby was stationed in Germany for six years in the 80's. Since then he's been searching for delicious German food in the states. I've been searching for a restaurant to celebrate his birthday and I found Mountain Brauhaus.. Making reservations was a breeze. What a wonderful surprise for him! He was very impressed with the German beer menu, lots of great beers to choose from. Our waiter Eric brought a basket of fresh pumpernickel bread to our table. It's definitely authentic- such an amazing texture and flavor. Hubby went with pork Jagerschnitzel and I opted for pot roast. According to him the Jagerschnitzel was done to perfection with the Spätzle the perfect texture. My pot roast was delicious, fork tender and the mashed potatoes were heaven!! I also had a side of potato pancakes thst were so crispy and tasty. I brought a piece of apfel strudel home. It definitely tasted homemade!! I wish I brought home 2 it was that good. I feel bad withholding one star but, I asked for a straw (I understand they're trying to reduce plastic) and I was told they offered paper straws- however, I never received one. At no time during our meal did our server ever check on us or ask if we'd like more drinks. Last, hubby brought home half of his dinner as the portion was very large. He asked if a little extra gravy could be added because the spatzel absorbed most of it. The server said "oh sure, no problem!" Unfortunately- no extra gravy was added. Everything here is delicious! There are so few German restaurants near me in NJ that whenever I'm in NY this is a must stop place. Pretzel with Gouda cheese dip is awesome! The pretzels are made with rye which I've never had elsewhere but it should be the staple! I can pass up their jaeger schnitzel which is always crisp and delicious. I am also not a desert person, but I always order a slice of their honey Cake to have their or later at home. The staff is always super nice and man do they bust their butts to get stuff done. Reservations are strongly advised but the bar is first come first serve. They also have a food truck outside that serves sausages. read more

Wow wow wow. First of all what a cool place. My partner and I drove from NYC for our anniversary and his mother is from Germany, so I thought it was appropriate to go, since he's been here before. I gotta say, even without reservations we went at a weird time. We arrived around 15:30 for "dinner" lols but it really was a double lunch. The wait was only 20 minutes but granted it was Labor Day weekend so I suggest trying to make a reservation before taking the drive. A party that arrived mere minutes after us had a wait of 45 min and i can imagine the wait list can get much longer. They have corn hole in the back! Also a food truck for bratwursts, some cold appetizers, beverages, and it was all on a beautiful lawn with picnic tables. We were escorted to our seats and holy Toledo the staff were amazing. They were kind and very thoughtful. I've never been a stickler for timing from the kitchen but between the two of us we ordered two apps, the seasonal salad, and two entrees, and everything was fired where once we were finished with one "course" the next one came straight away. Rarely at this price point did I experience something like that. I was floored. The food was incredible, I ordered from the standard menu and so did my partner, we got the sauerbraten and the pot roast, and like many reviews I read of this place the seasonal salad is definitely worth it. The entrees also come with a house salad and upon hearing our full order we opted out of the house salad. The food was phenomenal and I'm looking forward to making the trip again! AMAZING! We live about 4 hours from Gardiner, and I'm already trying to plan a day trip back because we enjoyed Mountain Brauhaus and the area so much! We were both trying to figure out something to eat, but our waitress Joanie helped SO much with answering questions and giving suggestions! She was fantastic! We ended up ordering a vegan brat dog, and a chicken schnitzel platter. I have never been one for vegan faux meats, but this was amazing. So glad I took Joanie's suggestion! I asked for a cup of coffee to go with dessert, and she even seeked out oatmilk for me. We also ordered a slice of Honey Cake to split. My one regret was spitting that dessert. That was the most amazing thing I ever had for dessert. Portions were large, food was fantastic, service was amazing, atmosphere was homey. My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to eat after our strenuous hike through High Peter's Kills Trail and we found this place on Yelp. Very close to Minnewaska State Park Preserve, and we had never tried German food, so we were interested and had no expectations. We walked in and we're greeted by all the workers in our vicinity. The place was very clean and inviting. It felt as if you were going into a family member's home. The interior decor was beautiful and they even have a fully functioning payphone that they still use to this day. We were seated quickly and given our menus by our server Danielle (who was a phenomenal waitress by the way), which said menus are clear and easy to follow (remember, we never had German food and we had no idea what most of the names of the dishes really meant). We started by sharing the Goulash Soup and Pretzel with the Smoked Gouda, and got the Satin Solitude Stout and the Braggot cocktail. Everything was bursting with so much flavor and cooked perfectly. The pretzel was literally the best pretzel we ever had, and the smoked Gouda was the perfect pairing. Even their mustard and horseradish that came with the pretzel was phenomenal. The goulash was very tender and just delicious. The portions were perfect for appetizers. Our drinks were absolutely delicious. I especially loved my Braggot cocktail, as I had never had anything that tasted like that before. I ended up getting a second one. The entrees we got were the Pot Roast Dinner and the Zwiebel Rostbraten. The pot roast was so savory and flavor, but never salty or overbearing. The gravy is amazing with the mashed potatoes and the meat was super tender. The Zwiebel Rostbraten was our favorite though. Nothing against the pot roast, but it was just literally the greatest thing ever. Everything on the plate went perfectly together and we couldn't stop saying how delicious it was. We barely were able to finish our plates as the servings were generous (especially the amount of meat they gave) but it was perfect as we were so hungry from our hike. We were disappointed only for the fact that we ate so much that we didn't have any space for dessert. We're planning to come back to try more things on their menu. The food is also not expensive at all, considering how perfectly everything is portioned. Combined with the excellent customer service and the warm, welcoming atmosphere, it's really a no brainier for anybody in the area to try this place. I ordered a unsweetened tea and a friend of mine ordered a special cocktail. The cocktail was $14 and was in a tiny wine glass with a stem 4oz tops!! If you are going to charge 14 dollars for a drink it should be a bigger glass than what they gave us!!! Way Way overpriced!!! The appetizer was Roulade beef over spaetzle and was very good. I ordered the shnitzel with egg and anchovies on top over spaetzle and some veggies she had pot roast. Was very good. And we had strudel for dessert. The wait for the dinners to come out from the kitchen took quite a while because the place was packed and there was a table of 15 people before us getting their dinners. Well over an hour from the time our order was placed to receiving our entree, factor in another 30 minutes for review of the menu and waiting for our order to be taken. Once we received our salads, probably 30-40 minutes in, our server mentioned that the kitchen was "backed up" because a number of the staff had gone back to college. (However, we had experienced very slow food delivery when we visited over Memorial Day.). Typically when significant delays occur in a restaurant, the manager will come around with a word of explanation and an apology. However, the manager was either absent, hiding or in the kitchen cooking. In all fairness, our server Omar was exceptional and our food was piping hot and tasty - when it finally arrived. (It was a bit loud since all of the tables were full but not yet eating.) I hope that the management gets it together because I love the food at this restaurant but my husband has lost his tolerance for the excessive delays. read more
