On our way back from meeting our new grandson for the first time in Rhinebeck ((born early this morning, 10-4-25, and everyone doing splendidly) , we stopped at one of our favorite local places for authentic tasting German food--Jaeger Haus (5084 NY-9G) in Tivoli, NY.  My one sentence review for card-carrying members of team Cliff Notes: "German beer on tap, a good selection of German wines, and authentic tasting German cuisine at really reasonable prices served up by friendly staff in an environment which just exudes Gemütlichkeit."  Everyone else is invited to continue reading, Bitte. There used to be numerous German restaurants in NYC and throughout upstate NY, but over the years those numbers have dwindled substantially to a handful.  A relatively new addition to the local Hudson Valley dining scene Jaeger Haus was started in 2018 (in a 70 year old restaurant building) and serves up seriously tasty and authentic tasting German beer, wine, and food.  We've dined there a few times over the last two years of visiting this year--the mood is relaxed, the beer is delicious, and food remind us of our travels to Germany and Austria.  The menu is tight and by that I mean it's focused on what they do well--which is traditional German food. While I wish they might add a few classic German appetizers to their menu for variety, their range of entrees provides ample choice and I am slowly making my way through those selections. Lola, one of our servers for the evening, quickly took our drink orders.  I ordered a mug of Hofbrau Original Lager (on tap) and after being given a tasting, my wife ordered a pint of Hofbrau Weissbier (which is similar to the sort of wheat beer she occasionally enjoys).  So refreshing.  A basket of house-made thinly sliced Roggenbrot (rye bread) arrived soon after our drinks with softened butter, lightly sprinkled with sea salt. We passed on the appetizers, knowing that our entrees would be substantial.  My wife ordered the Wienershcnitzel which comes with braised red cabbage and house-made spaetzle lightly sauced with a cream gravy.  These are classic sides which one can find served in restaurants from Vienna or Munich to Heidelberg or Berlin.  I ordered exactly the same thing (having tried other dishes on our prior visits), except I ordered my Wienerschnitzel "a la Holstein" (with a fried local farm egg).  The egg, especially the large yolk, provides an added level of lusciousness to the crispy veal.   Our meals arrived in due course.  They were gorgeous to look at and ate even better than they looked.  The spaetzles were soft and fluffy, the red cabbage was rich and well spiced, and the veal . . . the veal was heavenly.  Crisp on the outside, fork tender on the inside, dipping into a bit of the egg yolk (in my case); goodness what a delightful taste sensation. Just delicious.  We both earned "clean plate" certificates tonight--suitable for framing--felt satiated, but not overly full (which is where we like to end a meal).  We nursed our beers a bit longer, sharing memories from this special day, paid our bill (the bill encouraged customers to tip in cash, which we did), thanked the staff, bid the co-owner "danke schön und Wiedersehen" and we were on our way. read more

We met friends here to try out some local German food. The restaurant is small (about 10 tables) with a nice sized bar and very casual. It's a good idea to make reservations. Our waitress was very nice. The guys had beers which were delicious. I had a seltzer which was mostly ice. When I ordered a refill, they were going to charge me again. I complained and I got the second one "free" but that was it. This is a big turnoff for me. I know how cheap seltzer is from a soda machine....free refills are expected. And with meals at $30+ that's just ridiculous. The menu was limited and I was disappointed that there were not many healthier entree options. Everything is fried. The food, however was delicious. The fried pickles are not chips, but quarters and so good. I loved the pickle taste and you don't get that from pickle chips. We ordered a chicken shawarma as an appetizer which was great but difficult to share. The Chicken Schnitzel was delicious. The creamy cabbage that came with it was delicious and they should sell it as a side dish. It is so so good! The Wiener Schnitzel was also delicious. The red cabbage had a cinnamon/nutmeg type flavor that I did not expect but it was still good as well as the spaetzel. Someone ordered the Schweinshaxe and that was something I had never seen before. It was beautifully presented with all the fixings. The meat was tender with a nice crispy crackling. It was very salty but we were told that is part of the preparation. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate torte and the cream puffs. The torte was okay. It was very dense chocolate cake but almost dry. It was supposed to have an almond flavor but I didn't taste it. The cream puffs were a hit! They were stuffed with strawberry jam and whipped cream and then drizzled with a caramel sauce. We agreed that some of the things were overpriced for what you got but all in all it was a fun night out and a great dinner. read more

Today I experienced some of the best German food I've had in years. The sauerbraten was absolutely delicious. I savored every bite. I had it with spaetzel and their homemade red cabbage. So good! My hubby had the bratwurst and fries and my son said they fries were worth the trip. Then he and his wife devoured the weiner schnitzel. All meals were delicious. Desserts were fabulous. I had the baby cream puffs stuffed with whip cream and strawberry jam. My hubby had the homemade chocolate black cherry ice cream. OMG! Needless to say, we all had smiles when we left. I have to add that all the staff were wonderful! They even offered a pair of readers to my husband who had forgotten his glasses. Incredible. Go there. You won't be disappointed. read more

The wiener schnitzel was delicious but a request for more gravy added $5 to the bill. The potato pancake was too thick, burnt on top and appeared as grayish triangles cut from a potato "pie". Hamburger was good but pumpernickel bun was inedible & $25 for said burger & over-salted fries was a bit much. We were disappointed with this restuarant. The pork shank was hyper salty and not palatable. Having eaten this item at other German restuarants, we thought that the final rinse of the brine might have been fogotten but it appears that other reviewers had noted the same issue. The schnitzel was good and the cream puffs for dessert were excellent. The beer choices were quite good. The prices were steep for sure, about $5-$10 more per entree than similar dishes at other German places in Weschester and Orange Counties. We suppose the Bard parents will have no qualms with this cost/value ratio. Also, the very loud jazz music seemed out of place for a German restaurant. Dinner at the Jaeger Haus was great. Our server (Lolat) was outstanding. The food was better than I remember from prior visits. We had curry wurst and a Rahm schnitzel -- both were perfectly cooked. The appetizers we tried: sauerkraut fritters & fried pickles were both extremely salty. The pickles were so salty we did not eat them after our first try. Our entrees: we both had Jaegerschnitzel & subbed spaetzle for potatoes puree. While my husband found it all to be "okay", I found the food all too salty. We tried the cream puffs for dessert and they were quite stale. The prices are high considering both quality and portion size. I do give our server a good review though. We started with the delicious Sauerkraut Fritters, followed by classic Sauerbraten and Rahm Schnitzel (pork and chicken). Save room for deserts all homemade by owner Emily Carvajal. The classic Sacher Torte Apple Strudel and Haus Made Ice cream were all out of this world. We were excited to try Jaeger Haus for the first time but we're unfortunately let down. It took 30 minutes for us to get our food order in and as a server myself I felt like we were neglected most of the evening by our waitress Fionam. I'd be more understanding if it was busy but it wasn't at all. In addition the celebrities close to us seemed to get good service but we didn't. We came to Jaeger Haus with a reservation for a Saturday night dinner. We eat on the early side, so we came at 5:15pm. They have a cute wooden patio set up at the back. No indoor dining is available. Dogs are allowed on the outdoor patio. The service was friendly and welcoming. We ordered the chilled watermelon soup to start, and shared it. It was a pretty small bowl, so I'd recommend ordering two for two people. The soup was refreshing to have on a hot day. We were also presented with the house made rye sourdough, which was delicious. My husband enjoyed his pork schnitzel. The red cabbage it came with tasted great, with slightly sweet and sour flavours. I had the vegan eggplant schnitzel, which was thinly sliced and deep fried in breadcrumbs. It was cooked well, and served atop steamed greens. The whole dish was very light, yet filling. We went to Jaeger Haus for Father's Day, we have never been there, my son has (a long time ago), I am sorry that I didn't take pictures - it is a dark, unappealing place. The service was extremely slow - I mean extremely, inside there are about 10 tables, outside some too - I didn't see to count. Let me explain that there were 5 of us. A very dark place inside, there are a few windows, but not enough without interior lighting - there were a few strings of lights towards the ceiling, the The table was so tilted that you could see the drinks were going to one side, maybe it was the table or the floor - either way one wrong move and the person across from you was going to wear your drink. The bugs!!! Inside!!!! Flies were all over, one landed on my son's place - a nat, just when he finished his dessert But the flies were buzzing all around and we were inside, the air condition until was above us - a "mini split" unit, the setting was on 67 degrees and the bugs were still there. My glass had a chip around the rim, if I drank from that side I would have gotten cut. When we parked, a dog was tied up outside and the fence was open, someone from the kitchen came out and put him behind the fence. The pictures are a site too - not pleasant. It indicated on the menu that a party of 5 or more, gratuity would be added automatically - they weren't taking any chances, (remember tips aren't taxed, but my income is) - the meal was pricey - but I get prices, overhead, etc. but fix the overhead!!! The server was pleasant and I did not mention any of this when we were there - not her fault. Potato pancake was bad, very salty and the 'homemade bread' was dry, no taste. The beet salad was good!! A single coo coo clock over the fire place doesnt ring GERMANY! the whole grain sour dough was the likes of a MilkBone. The red cabbage was warm and a great color but it did not have the cloves and spices you expect. I grew up in a German home and spent 6 years living in Germany. Was staying in nearby Milan / Red Hook so we tried this place out. Really good German food. We had the fish and one of the schnitzels, the schnitzel was really good, one of the best I have ever had. The fish was also pretty good. we had the Oktoberfest tasting drink set, which was fun to try the 4 or 5 beers in smaller pours. We ate outside, which was nice, the backyard is fenced in. read more

We had a lovely, delicious lunch at Jaeger Haus today. We started with the sauerkraut fritters and a pretzel, which we happily devoured. Then my kids and I had three variations of schnitzel, and they were all great, crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, yum. My husband had the Sauerbraten and generously gave me a bite - wow!! Beware of the Jaeger Haus In Tivoli ..Food was excellent however I asked when I called how much a cake would be for a special party and I was given the price of $14 FOR a CAKE I asked 3x for a cake right? Yes she said it serves 12 people Got the bill and they charged $14 a slice I ask the hostess and she got nasty and said how could you expect to have a cake for $14.I said I specifically asked if I brought my own cake they said they would charge me five dollars plate charge but we have cakes here for $14 that serve 12 people so I opted for the $14 cake. Again I get a bill at the end of the night for $14 per slice for 12 slices. Asked to speak to the manager the manager wasn't there asked for the manager's name she refused to give it to me. Why would I pay $140 or $160 for a cake !.I know exactly what the girl told me over the phone they made a mistake and did not rectify it and the worst part to me was how rude and nasty the girl got with me... Is this the way you treat custoers that are spending $400 on dinner? SINFULLY delicious scratch kitchen food. You hardly find places that do everything home made and with real ingredients anymore. This was genuinely good, real food. We enjoyed everything we ordered, including local and German beers. We don't make it over this way that often but we will absolutely return at our next opportunity. Reservations recommended, was a packed house. Now we know exactly why. It's a cozy place with lovely Germanic woodsy decor, the bar area has a big TV for the sports fans. Great food and exceptional service! We stumbled upon this place because all the other restaurants in Tivoli were not yet open at 3:20pm on a Saturday. We were famished and didn't want to drive to Kingston for food. We had noticed the restaurant while driving through town so we decided to stop by. We weren't sure that they had tables outside, but I still stopped in to ask. We had our puppy with us, and it was a nice weather to dine outside. As soon as I walked in, I was welcomed with a smile and the staff quickly set up a table for us outside. The menu has something for all kinds of budget and most dietary preferences. They also have a nice selection of beer, cider and wine. We shared a couple of wursts for appetizers and I ordered the aubergine schnitzel, I had a pineapple cider (I do love ciders). Unfortunately, we didn't have any space for dessert but next time, I'll make sure to leave room for it. This restaurant has been opened for a little over a year. The staff was very welcoming and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. The food is delicious, and it's nicely designed. I definitely encourage people to stop by and enjoy their dishes. I drove an hour to get to this great little spot. The Staff are extremely nice and accommodating. I called my order in for take out and was surprised that they could have appetizers two meals and some sides done and ready to in 15 minutes. The potato pancakes are the best I have ever had, crispy and tasty. The sausage platter dinner was amazing and well presented. The chicken schnitzel was just amazing with the sauce was very tasty. You have to get the potato dumplings in a great butter sauce. I would eat they as a meal. I can't say enough good things about my experience, other than I will definitely be back. We were fortunate to have a nice summer evening so that we could sit outside on the patio, as the (empty) restaurant had loud music blaring and the air conditioning was blowing directly over many of the tables inside. The patio is comfortable and fortunately, had good jazz playing at a normal decimal level. Service was pleasant, but slow. Never received water for the table. The food WAS good to mediocre - not nearly as well prepared as the last time we visited. My husband's pork schnitzel was very salty, but he was hungry and decided not to send it back. My smoked trout w/ cucumber salad was OK, not great - about 2 tablespoons of cucumber salad, the sourdough bread was burnt on the edges, and the three tiny slices of "house make pickle" were transparent. Not happy to have a dog -cute as it was- roaming the area, instead of on a leash. Also not happy with a table with two small children screaming and crying; perhaps management could have politely asked the ladies to take their children to a different area? Many restaurants we have been to have politely, but firmly, told the parents to please take their children outside until they calm down, when the children are running around the restaurant, sitting on the floor, crying & screaming, bothering other guests. If we were not with other friends, we would have walked out. Afterwards, our friends said they also wanted to leave but were too embarrassed to say so. Hidden gem - though easy to find and so friendly. Authentic German food and great draft beer list including 5+ hard to find German taps. Swiss style potato pancake to die for - crispy outside, moist inside, perfect with homemade applesauce. Terrific brat selection. Outdoor seating and so focused on COVID safety that they spray down menus and all surfaces as soon as you leave.
