1. Service: Not kid friendly. Our dining experience started off fine and our 2 and 4 year olds were talking as they are entitled to as human beings eating at a restaurant. The owner or manager came over and told my husband that another table said the kids were bothering them and to get them quiet (not lower voice but get them silent). I am biased but I guarantee these kids were not louder than any other adult in the restaurant talking. There may have been a squeaky pitch here and there. Then the place fills up and it is very loud with lots more adults talking as they are entitled to do. We finish and order dessert to share. Our son lost it having to share. What do we do? My husband takes him outside because we don't want to subject people to the yelling. We're relatively considerate people of shared spaces. We don't like them yelling either. They come back and we start eating again. My son starts to yell a few minutes in so as we are about to take him out the elder people that complained the first time start to...yell. Our 2 year old yelling and learning to share makes a lot more sense than a 80+ year old yelling who has way more wisdom and brain/emotional development. The owner or manager just looked at us in disgust and didn't say anything to the two elder men yelling at us. One of the male servers even yelled at us but was chuckling a bit. He may have mocked our son which isn't quite mature either. Was our 2 yo son annoying for less than a minute before we had time to physically get up and walk him out? Yes. Did we do the right thing by taking him outside to calm him down and teach him that behavior was wrong? I think so. I greatly appreciate our server for continuing to provide us excellent service and respect before and after the men yelled at us and told us to teach our kid manners (parent shaming at its finest). She spoke German and had a great interaction with our kids. Very lovely person. 2. Food: 2.5 stars. My husband is German and I've eaten in Germany for the past 14 years when we visit so we are definitely biased due to having authentic German food previously. The schnitzel was overcooked and greasy. The flavor of the curry wurst was different and had a bit too much clover or All Spice. The curry came through but overall the sauce was nothing like what you'd get in Deutschland. The jäger sauce on the schnitzel was tasty but heavy on the wine (usually it's a brown sauce with mushrooms). The flavor was different from any jägerschnitzel I've had. The sauerkraut was really delicious and authentic. Overall this may be great for people that don't know/like authentic German food. read more

Having lived in Germany and currently living in a town with an excellent German restaurant, I can say with some authority, it was not good German food. They advertised German potato salad but served mashed potatoes with a sweet taste. They had no Spätzle instead offering cold egg noodles that spent too long under a heating lamp, making them dry and hard (and given the temperature of the noodles the heating, the lamp might have needed the coils checked & replaced; it was obviously not working properly). Fortunately the gravy left a very bad taste so it helped cover the taste of the rest of the meal. The service was just ok. Our waitress stopped once to see if we were ok. My wife and I had time on our hands, in between doing battle with our bank, title company and builder over the closing on a lot we're purchasing and building a house on....so we decided to take a day trip to Fredericksburg from San Antonio. We knew we wanted to sample German fare during this visit. Having been stationed in Germany many moons ago and having visited multiple times since then, we've developed a liking to good German food and we make it a point to seek it out wherever we are stationed. We had some absolutely savory German cuisine outside Fort Huachuca, AZ and even outside Fort Knox, KY. Hawaii, however, is a different story as we have yet to find quality German food in our 8+ years living there. When we got to Fredericksburg, we stopped by the Visitor Center (after having to circle around the block to find street parking) to maybe pick up a walking guide map...and to use their restroom. We got to talking to a lady who works there and we asked her about German restaurants in the area. She named 3 or 4 of them, adding how der Lindenbaum has been around for 30 years or so. Located in a historic building, the cozy restaurant was packed when we walked in, no doubt due to added influx of tourists and locals because of spring break. By the way, why does all of Texas have spring break at the same time? We waited a few minutes before a table opened up when a couple finished their meal. As they walked past us, the old man remarked how the food was good but you need "deep pockets". Is the food really that expensive here? Upon being seated, we were given the menu and asked what we would like to drink. We waited and waited for our drink and to place our orders. When we finally got our drinks and ordered our meal, we chose Rinderbraten ($15.95) for my wife and the Zigeuner Schnitzel ($17.95) for me with a side of rye bread. I asked if they had rouladen but they didn't. Both meals were served with German potato salad and red cabbage. The Zigeuner Schnitzel was tender and flavorful, especially with the slightly spicy bell pepper sauce. The potato salad was tasty and the red cabbage was probably the best we had during our meals at three or four German restaurants during this visit to Fredericksburg and New Braunfels. My wife's rinderbraten was tender and the gravy was just done right. Aside from the lapse in service in the beginning, we had an enjoyable meal with very good, authentic German cuisine. About the deep pockets comments...our lunch for 2 came out to a little over $47 with tip. It was a bit pricey but not too terribly exorbitant. I guess we do have deep pockets after all. My husband and I heard great things about this place so we met up with some friends for lunch. The restaurant is right on Main Street and is very quaint. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. I ordered the goulash and the rest my companions ordered schnitzel plates. I don't know a lot about German food but nothing really blew me away. My goulash was tasty and my husbands schnitzel was "okay" also. I ordered the basket of German Breads ($2.99). Unfortunately all we received was a basket of sliced marbles rye bread. Based on the description I assumed a variety of breads. During our visit their electronic register was down so, cash only. I did learn that cash only is the more common experience at this restaurant. I read a couple of reviews and one person that the owner is from the Rheinland and that the potato salad there is smashed potatoes with stuff in it. I am from the Rheinland and I have never eaten such potato salad anywhere around that area. I have never eaten it anywhere in Germany for that matter. But let's start from the beginning, I had Curry wurst with sauerkraut and German potato salad. The second meal was wiener schnitzel with Rotkohl and potato salad. If you have ever eaten a Curry wurst in Germany you know it comes with pommoes and not sauerkraut. Not even in the south of Germany where they eat more sauerkraut. The Curry wurst was ok and the Curry sauce was good. The sauerkraut was kind of flat and I talked about the potato salad already. The wiener schnitzel was good and the Rotkohl was also good. Overall I would have given two stars for that. The tiramisu was very good and this pulls it up to three stars. So yeah I will try the other 9 German restaurants in Fredericksburg when I have the time but this wasn't that great for the price we paid. read more

I came here on a girls trip and we easily got a table for the 4 of us! They were pretty busy with only 15-20 tables in the restaurant, so I'm glad we got seated quickly! I ordered the Jager Schnitzel and loved it! So tasty and lots of mushrooms! The pickled cabbage was a little sweet and surprisingly good. I usually hate pickled anything, much less cabbage. The potato salad was perfect - just wish the scoops were a tad bigger. The portion was right on for dinner and I didn't leave too full or still hungry. No room for dessert though. My other friends liked their food too! The pineapple curry was delicious!! Service was pretty good, although we didn't get any bread. We took a drive to Fredericksburg Texas an area called the Hill Country. This is a wonderful place to visit. There is so much history and in this town was a lot of German history. There were two German restaurants highly recommended, however, this one was mentioned more often by locals so we decided to give it a try as we were aiming for an authentic German dinner. Both were located on the main street near our hotel. .No reservations were required. They did not have outdoor seating however we arrived early and there were only a few tables occupied, therefore we were spaces out well. It was not a very big room and almost felt like you were in someones dining room, so quite cozy. Our server was fast but not overly friendly. The food arrived quickly and was very freshly made. Together we had Goulash with herbed noodles, schnitzel w a mushroom sauce, red cabbage and german potato salad. The schnitzel and sides were amazing, the goulash was ok but nothing special. I also ordered a slice of Black Forest cake which was good but not fantastic. We found parking on the street but felt the food prices were a bit high. I would return for the schnitzel and sides as they met all my expectations. The wait staff were masked and masks were required. I don't think they had their full menu due to covid. Cooked down red cabbage and potato salad both tasty. My husband had some sausage plate and he said it was A-OK. Total bill: Definitely higher than expected!! Two entrees and two German beers = $46.33 before tip. $7.95 for a Spaten! Was zur Hölle?! Overall: I've been to Germany, my last name is German, I think Der Lindenbaum might be run by German folks (???)...but the food has been Texasfied. Real German food is better than most people think. In Fredricksburg on a Wednesday evening after climbing nearby Enchanted Rock. As as "tourist town" some restaurants are closed during the week. We wanted German food and Der Lindenbaum was open. It is a quaint, cozy establishment with friendly staff. Not a huge menu, but from what I could see and hear the other customers were enjoying the food they ordered. Our waitress told us about an "off menu" dish the "Sausage Sampler" which my son and I ordered. The plate is a knockwurst, a bratwurst, and a Polish sausage with German mustard on the side. Sauerkraut and a German potato salad round out the meal. Bread is extra but I thought the basket of sliced marbled rye was worth it. I was starving and it was more than enough food and it was tasty. One of my grandsons had the Spaghetti Bolognese, a hearty serving which he said was good. They had a good selection of wines and beers. Prices are comparable to the other restaurants in the area. A Two Step Review: 1) Bring Cash 2) Arrive early. So cozy, So expect to 1) wait on the sidewalk until your table is called. 2) Really. Yes! Really Delicious German food in a laid back country folksy atmosphere. The entrees are generous in taste. Stone walls, warm and inviting atmosphere, solid wood tables, all leads to an inviting table dialogue. For the area...1) Prices are moderate yet 2) expensive to dine here because of extra charges or higher prices than other restaurants in the neighborhood owing to a higher quality. For example: 1) bread is not complimentary, a small basket of bread will run you almost $2...and a second basket of the same bread is upwards of $5.00. We also noted, the adult beverages of beer started at $10.00 a glass. (That being said, the bread is quite good and they present you with real butter.) The coffee was excellent, smooth. 2) The soup, although $8.00 and came with no bread or crackers...was simply WONDERFUL. (We broke down and ordered the $2 bread) Our entrees were fantastic and after eating around Friedricksburg last year and this year...this place wins on taste. The deserts were nice. It's cozy in here and ordering the deserts is a two step process. 1) Order from your waitress 2) be invited & instructed by your waitress...and you'll see other diners do the same...walk to the refrigerator case with the waitress...gawk at the offering as random employees squeeze past. Listen for the explanation of each dessert. Point. Make your dessert order, then return to your table to await said desert. Getting to the bathroom is a two step process: 1) pass the dessert refrigerator case with said possible diners in selection mode 2) navigate the food runner coming out of the kitchen down the hall with hot plates. There is only room for one person down the hall. So wait your turn. The loo is a one person set up w German names for one female and one male bathrooms accordingly...So be mindful of that. Because if your in a hurry you might pick the wrong door. I almost did. Four stars for the food. Three for the awkwardness of the place because of the aforementioned tight squeezes and owing to a large waitress station jutting out into the dining area. For some reason this architectural accent and placement bothered me as I kept thinking about how it created bottlenecks w the dessert tours for the cliental and the staff trying to constantly navigate to replenish supplies back there and calculate tickets or convene. But that's why I'm on vacation to relax. The restaurant does a great business with the modest size they have to work with. Come visit for lunch or dinner. The yum factor is high! read more

This restaurant was recommended to me by someone who grew up in Germany so I had to check it out. Came here with my dad when we drove through Fredericksburg on a road-trip. The ambiance was quite and charming. Our server was attentive. We ordered the Jäger Schnitzel to try. It also came with potato salad and red cabbage. The meat was so juicy and delicious topped with the heavenly mushroom sauce! The red cabbage was very good too! It was my dad's first time eating German. He loved it and wouldn't stop talking about the food on our 6 hours drive back home. Note the restaurant doesn't take Master and Visa card which is a bit odd. I don't use Discover or American Express so I had to run back to my car to get cash. Wish we had more time to try more things on the menu. A couple sitting next to us shared a coconut pie which looked delicious. I'd also like my dad to try some German beer. I will deff return next time I visit Fredericksburg. My family has been coming to eat here for over 30 years. We used to do yearly vacations to Fredericksburg when my grandma was alive and every year we would eat here. Our trips dwindled after her passing, but my immediate family decided we would go again this year. This place has always had a cozy intimate atmosphere where you feel like you're eating at home. We always get the same waitress too and she's a gem. This time around I ate the paprika schnitzel and it was delicious, I was in heaven, and it paired so well with their German mashed potato salad. I came to Der Lindenbaum for Oktoberfest and I have to say that it's extremely mediocre. The restaurant was kinda cute but the cutlery was dull and the cups and plates were made of plastic despite the food being over 20 dollars. The food I had, the paprika schnitzel, was very bland tasting and wasn't very good. The schnitzel it's self was chewy and dusty. The potatoes were VERY sweet and no one I went with liked it. Unlike me, my party did like most of the food, so take my opinion of the food with a grain of salt. Over all, I was unimpressed by the grandma-esc decor and bland food. The building is a hundred year old. We got seated right away and were told that they don't accept visa and MasterCard. I ordered a 3 brats platter (forgot the name), Hubby ordered salad. This was excellent german food. I really don't have anything bad to say. The one thing I might suggest to the restaurant if they read this, is to take a look at the menus of modern german restaurants and imbisses. They generally serve a combo that has schnitzel and french fries (pommes frites) with the jaeger sauce over everything. It's yum yum. The sauerkraut and red cabbage is much more traditional and something you'll get at gramma's house but not necessarily in a restaurant. Still, the sauerkraut and red cabbage was very good. read more

This is only a second visit to Der Lindenbaum in 25 years. Not because they are bad, but because we so much prefer the food at Friedhelms and really, how much schnitzel do you want? But during this COViD trip, we thought Friedhelms was closed (turns out they weren't -- rats), so we went to Lindenbaum. They do not take reservations, but we ended up walking right in at 7 pm on a Friday night without issue. It is a small place (although seemed a bit larger than my memory from 25 years ago), bright light and no frills. Service was fine and the food came quickly. We had: Traditional schnitzel with lemon -- this was the most successful of the two Zweibel schnitzel -- was ok Sides that came with them were potato salad and cabbage -- pretty meh Two Paulaner Hefeweizen Bill was about $50. Boy it did not disappoint!! The food and service was amazing!! We knew it was authentic when the waitress came up talking with a thick accent. She was super nice!! I had the spaghetti bolognese and my husband the spicy beef goulash. Oh.My.Lanta! That spaghetti was out of this world good!! It had amazing flavor and the sauce was so flavorful!! My husband said the meat on his plate was super tender and tasty! The owner's son even came over and gave us a delightful story about a painting we inquired about on their wall.
