This place is recommended for German food we ended up deciding to check it out. We walked down Main Street until we found Altdorf Biergarten which was the only authentic German cuisine restaurant open in the middle of the week. This was definitely a good choice. From the outside it has great atmosphere where looked like been here for ever. The inside was just the same old and explorative. Our waitress seemed like she was from Germany which added to the ambiance of the place. I ordered the Wienerschnitzel like the menu stated topped with house pickled onion, capers and fresh lemon, served with rotkohl and spatzle. I also had to get a German beer to compete the experience. This is such a cute place right on Main Street with indoor and outdoor seating. We were a little nervous after speaking with the hostess as she wasn't very friendly and almost rude. She did warm up when we were leaving though. The waiting area is small but luckily we weren't there for long. We waited about 10-15 minutes for a table and our server greeted us immediately. He was super friendly and helpful. We ordered the sauerkraut balls, the pork cutlet with capers and the bacon wrapped meatloaf. The sauerkraut was good but the mustard sauce made it that much better. You definitely have to be a lover of sauerkraut though, my husband didn't love them. The cutlet with capers was freaking amazing! Perfectly crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside. Let's just say the singer gave "enthusiastic karaoke energy," not "Oktoberfest headliner." The veggies were solid beer snacks, and the beer itself? No notes -- just order it and be happy. My family visited on July 2nd for dinner. We were seated quickly and our server was great. However, the food was disappointing to say the least. There was a long delay in our dinner being served. My granddaughter ordered grilled cheese sandwich and it was scarcely toasted, not grilled and the cheese was not even melted. My order of goulash was disappointing at best, containing a small amount of tiny pieces of beef and the taste was bland. Lastly, I'm surprised that a German restaurant does not offer sauerbraten on the menu. On the plus side, our server was great and the atmosphere is good. Not sure if we will be back in the future. More miss than hit on our recent trip here. Our friends got what they ordered. Neither my wife nor I did. I was brought the wrong beer and my wife's burger was ordered well done and arrived medium rare. She sent it back, but since no staff communicated about how long a replacement might take she finally got frustrated enough that as the rest of our table was finishing eating she finally flagged down a random staff member to tell to them to not bother bringing it since it had been so long. My plate was dropped by the waiter during service at the table, but that's not a huge deal as things happen. The kitchen was able to rush out another schnitzel so no real harm there. Our waitress was almost unseen and even had to be tracked down so we could pay to leave (yes, one of us had to get up and go find her to pay). The food we got that was cooked to the correct temperature was good, but for the price I don't see a reason to return on our next trip to Fredericksburg. I'll also note that even with all of the above struggles that no manager or senior person ever stopped by the table to check on us. read more

Great restaurant "off the strip" that is totally worth the extra walk to avoid the crowds and get imho better fare than what most other places are serving, and prices are great. Went on a Saturday early afternoon for lunch and it was very quiet inside; we were sat immediately and our servers were all great. Their menu looks similar to most other places but their food was much better than I've had at other restaurants in the area. Portions were large - we took home leftovers and enjoyed them later. Loved the food! Everything we had was delicious. We ordered the pretzel appetizer and it was 3 loaves of pretzel bread. Not the traditional shape but they were delicious and served warm. Someone else ordered the chicken 'pikant'. A sandwich, with a grilled chicken with cayenne on it. They claim it wasn't spicy but I don't know. Served in a brioche bun and fries as a side. They finished their plate. The inside entrance features a natural well that goes at least 25 feet deep. Impressive! The restrooms are far away from the restaurant which is great - keeps away any odors, but...it's far (haha). The restaurant does not take reservations. It's first come first serve. Nice spot in Fredericksburg for traditional Bavarian fare. We visited with a large group and shared a variety of plates. We tried the pretzel and sauerkraut ball appetizers, the broccoli cheddar soup of the day, and the wurst plate, Jagerschnitzel, and Bavarian goulash entrees. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and we found the sauerkraut balls and pretzel especially tasty. But she didn't seem to want to answer many questions for us regarding the different dishes. She was much more eager to serve other patrons. We also had an issue with flies EVERYWHERE. I don't know if it was because of the weather (very warm) or not. But otherwise the interior of the restaurant was good. We started with pretzels for an appetizer- they weren't bad, but it seemed they were frozen and just defrosted. As far as the entrees, my husband got some sort of meatloaf and I got a chicken dish. After a tour of the pioneer museum in Fredericksburg, we popped into the Altdorf Biergarten, which is located in a very nicely restored historic home on the Main Street of Fredericksburg. We were offered the option to sit outside, but as the sun was getting low, and the temps cool, we opted to be seated inside. The walls were lined with lovely oil paintings and the interior was quite classy. We were greeted by our ultra friendly server, David, who gave us a run down on their beer options; most of which were imported from Germany. I chose an Eddinger Weissbier which was really good, especially for a wheat beer. Then, we ordered a sausage sampler plate which came with three different bratwursts, sauerkraut and some nice freshly fermented pickles. All these items were just delicious and the mustard that accompanied them was excellent. In fact, they were so good I ordered another light bratwurst on the side and also an order of deep fried sauerkraut balls that my wife and I both enjoyed. Granted, we didn't get a full meal, but another guy dining in the room said his schnitzel was excellent. Kudos to David, a Munich native who gave me a tip on a food place to eat in that city when I go there in a few months.
