Our absolute favorite in Fredericksburg! Authentic, friendly and delicious. Adorable European atmosphere!

A wiener, kraut, and tater salad.

In Fredericksburg there is a spot, Where wieners sizzle, thick and hot. Der Lindenbaum, oh bless this place, One bite and I questioned my whole life's pace. The tater salad? Warm and crazy, Like a hug from a German lunch lady. It whispers, "Ja, you need more beer," Then vanishes like it was never here. But the kraut - dear Lord - a sour delight, It polka'd through my taste buds all night. Crunchy, tangy, borderline divine, Like angels fermented it in brine. Five stars, no question, not even a maybe. That meal hugged my soul like a drunk German baby. If heaven has bratwurst, they cater from here... Now pass the mustard and bring me more beer!

After being in Germany for a few months a few years ago, I always seek German cuisine as often as I can. I stumbled upon this place with my girlfriend as we were visiting and found it to be a good experience overall. The food tasted great. I would say most things were as accurate as you could get, unfortunately I haven't been to a german restaurant that has the same types of sausages as Germany, but this restaurant has been the closest by far!

Authentic German food! Cute location along Main Street in a historic building that looks to have been a bank (vault door still there). Lots of seating options in a comfortable and welcoming environment (you feel like you are in someone's home). Great service from the moment you walk in. Food came out very quickly. Lots of delicious dishes. Everything that was ordered was lovely. The desserts were very tasty as well.

Best German food ever I loved the sausages sampler with potatoes and sauerkraut! Awesome friendly service and beautiful atmosphere!

This place is nice, quaint escape from the loudness and the business of Main Street. Pretty small restaurant but excellent food and service. The Burgermeister platte was filling. Their take on German potato salad is very unique: it had a mashed potatoes consistency to it with a little sweetness and not much vinegar at all. This restaurant is ran by a sweet German lady.

I am originally from Chicago and had access to delicious, traditional German restaurants. My review and info is based on my knowledge skills and experiences from other restaurants there. I was one of two tables when I arrived on an early Saturday afternoon. I always tell the "busyness" of the restaurant because sometimes that can effect quality. The restaurant was recommended to me by a local person that I asked "Which restaurant am I going to for good traditional German food, I'm from elsewhere." They work at the Pacific museum around the block. I ordered the Bürgermeister Plate. The sausage is from a local German butcher shop and includes a smoked polish sausage, a bratwurst and a knackwurst with sauerkraut and German potato salad. I must inform you the potato salad is not traditional with sliced potatoes and sauce but a mashed potato. IT WAS THE PERFECT COMPLIMENT. So please be aware it's probably different than what you expect, but I believe you will appreciate the texture compared to the traditional style. (The flavor is there.) I had a draft pilsner that almost hurt my throat to drink it was so cold. I had a draft Oktoberfest with my meal that as I ate, I legitimately had goose bumps. It arrived hot from the kitchen. I followed with a cup of coffee, black, cause it's good coffee. I look forward to my next visit to Fredericksburg and will come back to try something else on the menu. For traditional sausage and beer, . They prefer cash and debit, there is a credit card processing fee, that's why they prefer cash or debit, no fees.

Good German restaurant. We went with friends who had never had German food before and they enjoyed it. I had the Burgermeister Platte which is the sausage plate. Polish, bratwurst and knackwurst. All very good and the mustard was on point. The German potato salad was excellent. My wife had the Jager Schnitzel. I thought the pork was a tad dry but the mushroom sauce helped. Her friend had the Gulasch and she enjoyed it. I had a bite and it was good. Unique flavor. My buddy had the Kassler Rippchen, a smoked pork chop. He thought it was good but said that it tasted more like a ham. The German bread is good. Maybe a bit dry but everyone enjoyed it. We shared a cucumber salad which had pickled cucumbers. It was refreshing and the cucumbers exceptional. I could have eaten a bowl of those bad boys! It was a bit warm in the restaurant. I didn't see any type of AC or air circulation system.

If you want to step back into time and have some authentic German food with good service, then stop by for a tasty meal. If you want a more touristy place, then don't come, but you will be missing out. Enjoy a cold beer in a quiet ambiance. Relax and enjoy! David has been amazing and has some great stories to tell (if you ask). We recommend asking for a few extra sides (the cucumbers are my favorite).

Most incredible. The Sausage sampler opened my third eye. DO NOT SKIP THIS PLACE when you are in the burg.

They were pretty booked up but as it was cold outside they let us switch our reservation from patio to bar seating. We really enjoyed our meal. The waiters were very attentive and happy to talk through the menu with us. Ultimately we decided on a pretzel as our appetizer, with lamb chops as our entree to share and a side of kasespatzle. The pretzel was warm and a nice size and we thoroughly enjoyed the beer cheese. We finished the cheese halfway through the pretzel and the waiters were kind enough to bring us another one. Next for the kasespatzle - which from my understanding is the German version of mac and cheese. It was very tasty and hearty! More filling than I expected. The lamb chops were the crown jewel of the night - rich and succulent and paired so well with the asparagus. The chef was kind enough to make another lamb chop for us as she saw how the meat shrunk while cooking it. The meal was so tasty and a good size for sharing! We were very full by the end. I'm so glad we tried this place! It would be perfect for date night, a meeting with coworkers or family dinner. I like that they have an intimate inside area as well as the outdoor patio. Check this place out!

It's great the way it is, and trying to make it fancy doesn't make it better. But I've always thought that if a restaurant has only a few options on its menu, they had better all be great, and I didn't find that to be the case at Otto's. One of us had the schnitzel au gratin, which seemed more to be like a chicken Parmesan. I had the duck schnitzel. I would say they were just both OK. The fried potatoes that came with the au gratin schnitzel were left largely untouched on my companion's plate. There wasn't much flavor to my red cabbage, and my spaetzel seemed to be more like a modern day risotto. And this at a restaurant that makes you leave your credit card for a reservation and threatens to charge if you cancel less than 24 hours before. For that, it had better knock my socks off. But my socks are still on, and they won't be walking back to Otto's. Extra star for the great location.

Wanted to try a different restaurant this past weekend and was craving a Pastrami Reuben sandwich…read moreso I looked on Yelp to find some good suggestions. Found this place, looked at the menu and checked it out. The place is very rustic, lots of wood and western-themed. We were asked if we wanted to sit outside or by the bar but I wanted somewhere quiet so we sat in the dining room off the main entrance. Lots of light flood thru. A musician was setting up outside but it was still a little chilly for me. We were the 2nd couple who was in this dining room as most were in the bar area. I passed by on my way to the bathroom and it was open towards the back deck so it had a nice vibe with college football playing on the screens. We were greeted by the waitress and ordered drinks--iced tea and Diet Pepsi while perusing the menu. We both ordered the Pastrami Reuben which came with a side. I chose the Warm Potato Salad to try it out and hubs got the Sauerkraut which was surprisingly warm and fresh. The waitress said "You've never had warm Sauerkraut??" And we hadn't! She also said if I didn't like the Warm Potato Salad, she'd give me something else. Our sandwiches came shortly thereafter and I'd say they were great! The meat was juicy and tender and a good portion, the rye bread wasn't too thick which was nice and just a little Swiss cheese was added and some Sauerkraut. I took some of my hubs' Sauerkraut to add a little more to 1/2 of my sandwich. He loved it and ate all the Sauerkraut with joy. I tasted my Warm Potato Salad which is a German style and the first 2 bites were okay. Then it got too vinegary for me so I just ate the bacon bits and just another bite of potatoes. I know where our next stop is the next time I want a Pastrami Reuben! I took photos of the building on our way out as it had lots of character.

Our server was a lovely older gentleman, who tried to accommodate us despite issues with the kitchen. The weather was nice and we enjoyed sitting outside with live music. Not so good things: Sitting outside was nice, except the musicians had their music way too loud for the size of the space and it was a restaurant, not a concert venue. We literally had to yell to hear each or the server. The kitchen was backed up so it took forever for our food to arrive. The food was also pretty expensive. We don't visit Fredericksburg very often, but I think we'll stick with Auslander when we want German food.

Since there are no business owner responses, the problems could be persisting. However, we've enjoyed our time here in the past so we thought we'd try it again. We got here at 5 pm on a Thursday and the place was mostly empty. That usually translates into better service and likely a better prepared meal as well. Sure enough, this theory was correct. We had two craft beers on the table within three minutes followed by Ruben fritters five minutes after that. The menu here is pretty simple with the expected German twist to it. We just stuck to a salad and burger. The salad was fresh and good, but the burger was pretty average and you have to add your own mayo and mustard. Even by adding cheese and mushrooms it still fell within the three star range and the fries were just OK. The beers were correct to style, but the hoppier beers were slightly tame. It's pretty much three stars overall, but the service was great so 31/2*. I'd still come back and try something else off the menu before the weekend and before 6.

We came in sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas on a rainy night and were seated right away. After waiting like 10 mins the waiter came and took our drink order. The ladyfriend had a water and I got a flight of beer. He showed up 5 mins later with her water and took our food order. We order a pretzel as an appetizer, and each ordered a salad as an entree. Then queue the Jeopardy theme as we waited. 1st came out the salads after 15 mins or so. I asked about my beer and the waiter says, "yeah dude I asked the bartender and he said you'd get it before Christmas" and proceeds to laugh. I smile and let it go. So now I am watching the bartender and he's not busy. He actually took other people's order at the bar. Then comes the pretzel 10 mins later. The waiter says, "Can I get you anything else?" I say, "Yeah my beer. How am I supposed to eat this without anything to drink?' He says " woah dude don't kill the messenger". I then went full Karen and asked to speak to a manager who never came. Finally, after finishing the salad and a piece if the pretzel, the beer came. I got my order completely out of order. The pretzel was stale, and the cheese was cold. The salad was fine, and the beer was average. The service sucked and the bartender was an assclown. Tourist trap craphole and oh they didn't even have brewery stickers.

The food is excellent--properly executed, structurally sound, and refreshingly uninterested in novelty for novelty's sake. Each dish arrives as intended, which already places it well above much of the contemporary dining landscape. The beer selection is unapologetically German and thoughtfully curated, clearly assembled for people who understand that tradition is not a flaw in need of correction. The ambiance is immaculate: authentic without cosplay, warm without affectation. It feels lived-in rather than staged, as if comfort and coherence were priorities rather than marketing angles. Service is attentive, calm, and mercifully non-performative. No hovering, no scripts--just someone quietly ensuring that nothing detracts from the experience. More broadly, it serves as a reminder that appreciating a culture requires intellectual maturity: the ability to acknowledge historical atrocities while still recognizing the depth, discipline, and humanity embedded in its food, craft, and social rituals. Reducing an entire civilization to its worst chapter is lazy thinking. Altdorf manages to honor culture without evasion or nostalgia.
