This restaurant is quaint and adorable, complete with laminated checkered tablecloths and a bud vase with fresh flowers. Our server was great and took care of us, giving helpful suggestions. While the menu seemed overwhelming at first, with so many unfamiliar terms, it really boiled down to variations of sausage/bratwurst, schnitzel, and sides. Complimentary marbled rye bread was a much appreciated gesture. (I was starving). I ended up getting bratwurst plate, which came with sides of potato salad and sauerkraut. The potato salad was more like a sweet potato-salad-flavored mashed potato. Great balance to the salty bratwurst that I also ate with more bread. I had very high hopes and expectations for this place after 2 prior local German venue dining experiences that rocked my foodie world. I heard this was a very popular place as well and in fact the oldest German restaurant in the county. Perhaps I let hype get out ahead of me but nonetheless. The place is smaller inside but nice and quite, mellow, relaxed. The staff are kind and friendly. The service is fast and accurate. The menu has all the traditional German fair dishes you could ask for. I went with the Kasseler Rippchen plate expecting a normal thick pork chop with my plate. Instead I got 2 small thin pieces of hamsteak I'd expect for a breakfast dish. They were good yet no doubt! As was the picked red cabbage and saurkraut sides. All good! Just danty on the meat portion which never happens with German dishes I've had. Big portions is part of what makes the plates so unique is it not? We visit Fredericksburg a couple of times a year and usually choose Der Lindenbaum specifically for their goulashsuppe. It has big cuts of beef, flavorful gravy, and served over plentiful noodles. The only thing I wish is that they'd throw in a slice or two of their bread. For $14+ per plate, I think that could be feasible. Overall, we had a good experience at Der Lindenbaum. It was one of two German restaurants downtown, and it was the first one we came across. They had similar reviews, so we chose this one. It was a very hot day, and the outside area was definitely not what we wanted. The inside was cooler, although still warm overall. We wanted some lighter fare, and so we got sandwiches. My wife's roast beef sandwich was very good, although a smaller portion than we thought it would be. That's the same for the reubens that my daughter and I got. They had all of the necessary ingredients, but I would definitely not call it a substantial sandwich. The meat and sauerkraut was good in the reuben, but the bread was dry and fairly plain. We had enough room after finishing those to get a dessert, and we chose a peach custard that was very good. The service was good overall, and we did not have to wait around long for any part of the meal. The beer selection was good overall, but by the end, we ended up paying over $90 with tip for three people, and we did not really feel like we got that much value out of what we ate. read more

The food here seems to be the most authentically German food you can get in Fredericksburg. The owner has always been so nice every time we've gone in. The waitstaff seems to be happy too. We went to Der Lindenbaum for lunch on a Friday. Due to Covid restrictions, they were at 50% capacity, but there was plenty of tables and we were seated right away. The restaurant and employees followed all of the current Covid guidelines. We were served promptly and ordered right away. My wife had the knockwurst platter and I had the Bratwürste plate. Both came with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. Since I was born and raised in Germany, I am familiar with real German cooking. I was born and raised in Germany. Lindenbaum offers authentic German food, so eating there is a must when visiting Fredericksburg! We had the classic schnitzel and "Ungarischer Gulasch" (Hungarian goulash). I grew up eating these dishes and loved them. I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures lol Anyway, the schnitzel is made with pork, pan fried and served with lemon. All three facts make it authentic and super delicious :) The red cabbage was slightly sweet and cooked with gloves. Super yummy! The goulash was tender and flavorful. We also ordered the bread. It is not as dense and heavy (literally) as German bread. This is a good move in the US because you don't have to get used to a different texture. The taste reminded me a lot of German caraway bread! We had seconds, because they even offer free bread refills. Besides imported regular German beer, they also offered a non-alcoholic one. Most of the staff seem to have been born in Germany. Regardless, they all spoke German and were super nice :) It's a rustic & cute place. No idea why Lindenbaum has less than 4 stars, so don't let that bother you. If you want to feel like you are eating an authentic meal, just like people in Germany would, you should definitely go to Lindenbaum! read more

I remember this being a different restaurant at the same location several years ago so we were hesitant to try it. It was called Bavarian Bistro or something like that. We are glad we did! The service was good. We stopped for a late lunch on Saturday and had no wait. We chose the Goulash which was very hearty and short on the meat (maybe 2-3 oz) but meat was tender and tasty. We are split a plate of jaegerschnitzel (a breaded and fried pork steak with a rich mushroom gravy.) served with sweet red cabbage and home made German potato salad. They charge I believe either $2.95 or $3.95 for bread but we lucked out with what we ordered and got two pieces. It was excellent. It was a generous portion! Also had a large draft German beer draft. So this place is a bit pricey $54 for lunch plus a tip but we wanted some authentic German food for a change and they did not disappoint! As mentioned by many, this is a cute restaurant in the heart of Main Street. Only a few tables were taken when we entered so we decided to try it out due to COVID capacity concerns (50% for inside sitting). We ordered the schnitzel and the bratwurst plates (photos attached). Our food got to our table fairly quickly. The troubling part about this is that the restaurant started filling up just as quickly. Every single table (except for one by the door) was taken by the time we started eating our meals. I was disappointed given the 50% ordinance that clearly was not adhered to. In hind sight, I should have picked a restaurant with outside seating. The food was good. I enjoyed the German Potato Salad and the schnitzel tasted better when topped with the pickled cabbage. My daughter enjoyed her bratwurst and I must say that I actually liked the sauerkraut. It's not something I typically enjoy but the one served here did not have the strong fermented taste to it. 1. Service: Not kid friendly. Our dining experience started off fine and our 2 and 4 year olds were talking as they are entitled to as human beings eating at a restaurant. The owner or manager came over and told my husband that another table said the kids were bothering them and to get them quiet (not lower voice but get them silent). I am biased but I guarantee these kids were not louder than any other adult in the restaurant talking. There may have been a squeaky pitch here and there. Then the place fills up and it is very loud with lots more adults talking as they are entitled to do. We finish and order dessert to share. Our son lost it having to share. What do we do? My husband takes him outside because we don't want to subject people to the yelling. We're relatively considerate people of shared spaces. We don't like them yelling either. They come back and we start eating again. My son starts to yell a few minutes in so as we are about to take him out the elder people that complained the first time start to...yell. Our 2 year old yelling and learning to share makes a lot more sense than a 80+ year old yelling who has way more wisdom and brain/emotional development. The owner or manager just looked at us in disgust and didn't say anything to the two elder men yelling at us. One of the male servers even yelled at us but was chuckling a bit. He may have mocked our son which isn't quite mature either. Was our 2 yo son annoying for less than a minute before we had time to physically get up and walk him out? Yes. Did we do the right thing by taking him outside to calm him down and teach him that behavior was wrong? I think so. I greatly appreciate our server for continuing to provide us excellent service and respect before and after the men yelled at us and told us to teach our kid manners (parent shaming at its finest). She spoke German and had a great interaction with our kids. Very lovely person. 2. Food: 2.5 stars. My husband is German and I've eaten in Germany for the past 14 years when we visit so we are definitely biased due to having authentic German food previously. The schnitzel was overcooked and greasy. The flavor of the curry wurst was different and had a bit too much clover or All Spice. The curry came through but overall the sauce was nothing like what you'd get in Deutschland. The jäger sauce on the schnitzel was tasty but heavy on the wine (usually it's a brown sauce with mushrooms). The flavor was different from any jägerschnitzel I've had.
