While passing through Fredericksburg with my wife, we were ready for a good German meal. Checking Yelp, we discover that on a Tuesday evening, most of the German restaurants in town have already closed at 3pm. That's when Otto's stood out to us. Not only was it the first restaurant to show up on Yelp (very highly rated), but also it was OPEN. While it may have been an accident that we chose Otto's, it was a lucky break. They were awesome. It was very busy, so we had to eat on the patio, but our table had plenty of shade and a nice breeze from a wall fan. It's a block off the main drag, so you don't have to put up with lots of traffic going by. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food didn't take too long to come out. The selections were fairly extensive. The food quality, portion sizes and flavor were spot on. We also highly recommend the Black Forest cake. read more

I found Otto's to be a bit disappointing. Maybe it's just that German isn't the type of cuisine that should be elevated... It's great the way it is, and trying to make it fancy doesn't make it better. But I've always thought that if a restaurant has only a few options on its menu, they had better all be great, and I didn't find that to be the case at Otto's. One of us had the schnitzel au gratin, which seemed more to be like a chicken Parmesan. I had the duck schnitzel. I would say they were just both OK. The fried potatoes that came with the au gratin schnitzel were left largely untouched on my companion's plate. There wasn't much flavor to my red cabbage, and my spaetzel seemed to be more like a modern day risotto. And this at a restaurant that makes you leave your credit card for a reservation and threatens to charge if you cancel less than 24 hours before. For that, it had better knock my socks off. But my socks are still on, and they won't be walking back to Otto's. Extra star for the great location. read more

I would give 5 stars to the staff who were vey attentive and friendly. The pretzel was good with a great beer cheese sauce. We also got the flatbread which was more like a crisp cracker and not at all what we expected. Loaded with arugula but not very good. We also had the pirogies which were really good. The duck was "good". Maybe cherry sauce on the side because it made it a little soggy. The pork schnitzel my daughter wouldn't eat. She thought it was with a cheese sauce which would have been better but it had a red tomato sauce on top and melted mozzarella. Why they put a pasta sauce on the schnitzel is a mystery. We stopped here because it was close to our Airbnb, and we're so glad we did. The restaurant is absolutely adorable! We ordered a couple of drinks and their famous pretzel. The pretzel was delicious with great flavor, we just expected it to be served warm, but it wasn't. The drinks were also excellent and paired perfectly with our visit. We sat out on the patio while it lightly sprinkled outside, and it made for such a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind. This has been our annual go to restaurant every time we visit Fredericksburg. From the service to the food, everything is excellent. It is a small location so definitely make reservations in advance. The duck schnitzel is always a must have and last year they had a beef shank that was absolutely delicious but this year , it was replaced by the lamb shank which was another great dish. This year we got the chocolate torte for the first time and unfortunately it wasn't anything special. It tasted just like a torte you can get from the grocery store. However, the waiter asked us how we liked it and we just said it was ok. He ended up taking it off our check without us asking which was super nice and unnecessary but highly appreciated. read more

This was a very yummy dinner in downtown Fredericksburg! We visited after our wine tour and were excited to try some German food. They were pretty booked up but as it was cold outside they let us switch our reservation from patio to bar seating. We really enjoyed our meal. The waiters were very attentive and happy to talk through the menu with us. Ultimately we decided on a pretzel as our appetizer, with lamb chops as our entree to share and a side of kasespatzle. The pretzel was warm and a nice size and we thoroughly enjoyed the beer cheese. We finished the cheese halfway through the pretzel and the waiters were kind enough to bring us another one. Next for the kasespatzle - which from my understanding is the German version of mac and cheese. It was very tasty and hearty! More filling than I expected. The lamb chops were the crown jewel of the night - rich and succulent and paired so well with the asparagus. The chef was kind enough to make another lamb chop for us as she saw how the meat shrunk while cooking it. The meal was so tasty and a good size for sharing! We were very full by the end. I'm so glad we tried this place! It would be perfect for date night, a meeting with coworkers or family dinner. I like that they have an intimate inside area as well as the outdoor patio. We went on a Sunday evening after all the shops in the area closed. Lots of good with this restaurant and a few things I didn't prefer. Wine list is small but has a good selection. We enjoyed all our selections by the glass. The pretzel was perhaps our favorite. Buttery and hot. Perfectly seasoned. The spatzle soup was good but not hot. The clams were bitter because of the beer. Portion was big for an appetizer but I'm sorry to say it was so bitter it became unpleasant. I ordered the duck for my main dish and it was fried really hard and was tough to eat. The duck was way overcooked and dry for my liking. The spatzle and accompaniments were good though. We really enjoyed the assortment of cocktails, German wines, and beers. Flammkuchen reminded us of our time in Zurich, with its thin almost cracker like crust, covered with just the right amount of cheese, arugula and balsamic. Heaven. We pulled into town and found this place on Yelp. The reviews caught my attention--especially because of the duck strudel--so we decided to give it a try. Several reviews mentioned that reservations weren't necessary, but I would definitely recommend making one. We went on a Friday night, and while we were able to get a table by arriving early, the place filled up quickly and was fully booked during and after our visit. For an appetizer, we had the schnitzel balls with mustard sauce--melt-in-your-mouth delicious! I ordered the duck strudel, and it was absolutely out of this world. My husband had the bratwurst with sauerkraut, and he loved it. I paired my meal with a German beer called Reissdorf, which was crisp and flavorful--highly recommend it. The only downside was that we didn't save room for dessert, which I definitely regret! As for the service, it felt a little off. The staff seemed rushed and not particularly attentive. My water glass went unfilled several times, and I probably would have ordered another beer if someone had checked in. Once the restaurant filled up, it also got quite loud. Visit - July 26, 2025 We were a group of 9 visiting from out of town & Otto's is one of the places in town that took line reservations for group size so kudos to them. They did a good job of taking care of us even when there was a hiccup trying to get us seated. Food- to start off we all shared the flammkuchen & the pretzel Und Bierkäse. Both great starters. For our entree, most of us ordered the duck schnitzel which was a HIT. The duck on top of the red cabbage & spaetzle ... a pairing I didn't know I needed. A higher price point than most other restaurants but certainly worth it. I had the Brot und Butter, and the pierogi entree. I switched out asparagus for Rotkuhl, and had the lemon dessert. Everything was perfectly prepared and the server/bartender was very knowledgeable and helpful. My husband liked his wurst plate I ordered the citrus cheesecake to go as I was a bit stuffed.. it was just a little cupcake cheesecake and the meringue was flat and runny. After a nice day visiting downtown Fredericksburg, we stopped in at Otto's for dinner. Being that it was warm in December this year, eating in the patio ended up being very comfortable. The service was great and the food was pretty good. I'm pretty particular about my schnitzel, and the duck schnitzel did not disappoint. Otto's was so good that it changed my mind about German food. I came in skeptical as the last time I'd had German food it was mediocre, but I left wanting to try more in the future! With the cozy and warm interior and the attentive service, I'd especially love to come back to Otto's. The wurst plate was some of the best German sausage I had (especially compared to the other spots I tried in Fredericksburg). I could tell the meat was different by the chew and texture it had. Went to Otto's back during Labor Day weekend and the place was PACKED. Thankfully the front of house was able to seat us at one of their last tables after some wait time. I had never been to Fredericksburg and was glad we were able to try out this restaurant when heading over our Uber told us this was a classic and popular place. I tried the duck schnitzel and it was very flavorful and perfectly crispy. I also tried the beet butter and bread which was pretty tasty as well. The service was pretty quick for how busy the place was and we were seated outside which was actually really cute and homey. Had dinner here on Labor Day weekend. We were too late to make a reservation, so we had to wait about 40 minutes for a table on their busiest day of the year. Everyone was very nice and mindful of us. The Host let us know our status a few times. We ended up eating at the bar as it was the first opening and was just fine. Service was excellent, everyone we dealt with was so nice. We had a exceptional dinner. Fried Sauerkraut Balls with Sausage and then Jiegerschnitzel (pork) with asparagus and mashed potatoes. Everything was fresh and very tasty. We were staying at a cabin about 20 minutes away. As soon as I walked into the cabin I realized I didn't have my wallet. I called and although they were closing in 15 minutes the bartender told me just knock on the door if it was locked. I got there about 10 minutes after they stopped serving but the door was open as people finished their dinners. I had had a bit more cash than I usually carry as well and my license and credit cards. I talked briefly to the bartender and was so happy I got my stuff back I forgot to give him the $10 I was going to. Thanks to our server Calissa, she did a great job start to finish. She walked us through the menu, food, cocktails and sparkling wines, and her service was attentive but not intrusive! We started the evening with a couple of cocktails... the Otto's Spezi and the Vino and Velvet. The Spezi was herbal and good, a bit on the sweet side. The V&V was both herbal and sour from the grapefruit, also good. We shared a bottle of Hild sparkling wine from Germany, our first venture into sparkling wine from that country. It did not disappoint! It could have been served a bit colder, but the ice bucket bath added chill to the wine as we dined. Our food courses began with the sauerkraut balls and the Riesling soup. Both were delicious. The grain mustard/creme fraiche made the sauerkraut balls, and the plentiful bits of speck in the bottom of the soup bowl made for a tasty treat. We didn't think the soup was as "wine forward" as had been described, it was very good! Entrees of course included the duck schnitzel, as well as the braised pork shank. We could hear many of the other diners ordering the same entrees... with good reason, they were both exceptional, with leftovers for a midnight snack. It was a very enjoyable meal. Otto's was a surprising and excellent restaurant that we dined at while we were spending a long wine-tasting weekend in Fredericksburg. The decor and ambiance is low-key but tasteful, very rustic actually (but thats cool!). The servers were awesome and the bartenders made some excellent drinks. Where Otto's really shines is their food though; German food isn't usually included in the pantheon of world-famous cuisines, but Otto's put an amazing showing out there with their Duck Schnitzel - this is to die for, and make sure you get the egg on top as well! We also tried the pretzel with beer cheese (maybe my favorite pretzel EVER!) and Sauerkraut Balls (not a sauerkraut fan, but these were surprisingly great as well). I visited Otto's with a group of friends (party of 5) on a Saturday afternoon around 4 PM, and we were able to get seated almost immediately. The atmosphere was welcoming, and our server was super nice, accommodating, and attentive throughout the meal. Two friends in our group had been to Auslander but not Otto's before, and they said they enjoyed Otto's more! We started with the Brot and Butter, which came with 5 slices of bread. I appreciated the light breading of the sauerkraut so that both came through. My significant other got the wurst (sausage) plate and I got duck schnizel, and both were thoroughly enjoyed. 2nd only to the duck was my red cabbage side - it is NOT all created equal! Here, it had such a great balance of mildly sweet and still cabbage. We didn't do dessert only because we lacked room, but it was offered. We got mocktails - both enjoyed. I appreciated the selection, as did my partner, as she also had a rattler. Nice atmosphere - kind of a mix of lightly romantic but more just "homey" and chill. I wish the tomatoes were cooked just a little to release those amazing juices. I had to try the duck since it my favorite protein. It was good.
