Descanso? Spanish? Korean spa? In Tujunga? How could it all be linked together?? Hidden between two majestic mountain ranges in an emerging Korean community is Descanso Garden Spa; a Korean-style spa that borrows its name from the Spanish word "descanso," which means to rest. I was somehow hoping that the Spanish naming would mean that a Spanish theme would follow, but the only other Spanish element was the Spanish-speaking cooks and cleaners. Nevertheless, Descanso Garden Spa was clean, reasonably priced with mucho amenities in a modern facility. So from a pure literal translation standpoint, Descanso accomplished its mission. Cinco stars! After paying the entrance fee, I followed the unusually long hallway that led to the men's section. The locker room was nice and clean, and extraordinarily quiet . . . because there was no typical ambient music. I don't know if the sound system was broken or non-existent, but it was nice to be naked and unplugged from the outside world. Before entering the Pool Area, I had to release a little pool of water first. The bathroom had a nice pair of waterless standing urinals to the immediate right, a completely enclosed one-person toilet room to the far right, another Toilet Room to the far left, and one sink in the center; everything was within a couple steps of each other. Fortunately, I was the only person in the bathroom because spacewise, it was just enough floorspace for one person to get around. During peak hours, how awkward it must be for several naked men trying to navigate each other in close quarters? The Pool Area has a main pool in the center, surrounded 360 degrees with the standard waterworld amenities, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, razor), plus the bonus scrub towel!!! After a quick scrub and shower, I started with the main pool. There was no sign stating its temperature, but from experience I knew that if it was the largest pool, it had to be warm. I was right. I then moved to the small rectangular pool. Again, no signage stating its temperature, but I knew that the smallest pool with nobody in it was probably the cold pool. It was a nice cold, enough to create that shock effect when dipping in. Next was the Dry Heat Room. Woodwork was nice, temperature all good. They had these handheld wooden head/backrests that weren't very comfortable; there were three of them and, in the end, they really just cluttered up the area. The Steam Room kept pumping out steam like there was no tomorrow. I couldn't bear more than a few minutes, but I liked it. I then grabbed a razor from the toiletries station and went to shave at the sit-down stalls. Nothing unique here, except that I nicked myself while shaving. After showering one more time, I put on the uniform and headed upstairs to the Coed Area. Much like the design of the Pool Area, the center is the main event (Heated Floor Area) surrounded on all sides by different rooms. I started at the Cedar Oxygen Room. Extra filtered clean air, a comfortable room temperature, and a great panoramic view of the mountains in the background polluted with the urban landscape in the foreground. I laid down on a mat and could hear a low murmur of the parking lot activity, Foothill Boulevard traffic, and a plane flying in the distance, probably related to Burbank Airport nearby. Also inside the room was another door that connected to a Female-Only Sleeping Room. Just outside the Oxygen Room, I found the Male-Only Sleeping Room in the next corridor. Without my phone's light, it was pitch black inside. After sitting down on one of the cushioned chairs, I leaned back, put my feet on the foot stool, and took a quick nap. The Cold Room, Yellow Soil-Charcoal Room and Himalayan Salt Room were ok, but the Germanium Room stood out. I first thought that it was named after the flower, but that is GeRAnium. GeRManium is some kind of rock and according to the sign near the door, it's supposed to promote interferons that boost the immune system. The restaurant was standard-issue Korean food. Good taste, quality, quantity. It's strange how the menu board did not have the prices. There is a handheld menu, with prices, on the counter. Standard post-meal procedure is to prepare for the food coma. For me, this requires positioning myself comfortably in the open area with my mobile device on a FREE wireless connection. There were several different wireless network signs posted throughout the Coed Area. I had to trial & error each network until I discovered that being near the Germanium Room worked. I then lounged around for a good amount of time . . . and then headed home. It would have been nice if the designer of Descanso Garden Spa had added Galbi tacos to the menu or replica Pablo Picasso art on the walls, but I was not there for a cultural experience. Very nice and clean, great place to relax, went on Saturday morning and had the wet area mostly to myself until noon and then again after 2pm. The wet area is small with showers, a steam room, sauna, hot spa for 8 guys and a small cold pool for 2 guys. The only problem was in the steam room that was very loud when the steam was turned on and got very hot before turning off. Also in the afternoon there were 2 unsupervised young boy running around and they left a number of used towels laying around in the wet area. The locker area and locker were nice but very little space to to get undressed or dressed. Barely enough room to open the lower locker door in front of the bench that was between the 2 rows of lockers. Put on the shorts and shirt that was provide and went upstairs to explore the co-ed area. Checked out the 3 heated rooms of different temperatures, the cold room which was a little loud with the ac running and then went to the men's sleep room, very dark and relaxing. Overall it was one of the best spas that I have visited, Beach Spa the next best that I have been to has a larger wet area with 3 spas instead of 2 spas and a raised heated floor with a mat to lay on to relax on next to the steam room. read more

I *love* Korean spas. I've been going to Ktown spas for over a decade (& kspas in Queens, Beaverton & where ever I can find them). I have visited many well known and small spas in Los Angeles. I recently moved to this area and was in desperate need for my kspa relaxation time. But who wants to brave an hour traffic to get to Ktown? Thanks to Descanso *Garden* Spa, there is no need. I spent the afternoon at the spa today and this place is great. Women's area has hot water pool, cold pool, dry sauna, wet sauna & wet salt sauna (not sure if this was turned on, but there was salt at the entrance). Lots of tall showers and short showers in a bathing area with buckets, seats, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors & even some scrubby bath mits (though I didn't use one of them). Locker room is huge. Tons of lockers, two areas to blow dry your hair & get ready. I soaked, I sauned, I got a scrub, I hung out in the rooms upstairs. It was fantastic. Upstairs it's like a Jimjilbang - co-ed with pink & blue "uniforms" they give you. There are 3 hot rooms in various degrees - Clay room, salt room (~146-150 degrees), geranium room (which was like 180 degrees!!!), also a cedar oxygen room with amazing views of Mt Wilson, and an ice cold room. There are also mens and women's sleeping rooms, which I peeked in were pitch black. The main area had games, sleeping mats, those square sleeping pillows, TVs, magazines and more views of the mountains. The cafe had Korean food standards.Everything was clean. This place is HUGE! They are running a special $15 entrance fee till the end of the year (2016). And you get some free facial packs as well. The normal entrance fee is $20 and totally worth it. Descanso is comparable to some of the better Ktown co-ed spas. I'll definitely be back. Only things I could see improving to beyond perfection - Hair ties in the women's room - Juice bar or fresh squeezed juices available - A few vegetarian food options - A mugwort tea hot pool And of course, come visit, but don't let it get too crowded. :) read more

Very clean and well appointed facility, we are lucky to have this place in our neighborhood. Mens side: Well worth the visit as everything from the front desk experience to the cleanliness throughout is A+. Jacuzzi is large and perfect temp; large steam room and dry sauna and again great temp. Plenty of towels and supplies no matter what you need. Also had a scrub and it was very well worth the money. A side note to visitors: it's a spa, keep your voice down. No one should be able to hear you from inside the steam room. And guys your faded trunks that you insist on wearing because you can't bear to be naked with other men are gross. Lose them. It's a Korean spa so it's pretty much against the rules. Be respectful is all I'm saying, and that includes not jumping into the cold plunge pool, you're grown men and this isn't a competition or a pool party. Other than that I'll be back! read more

So far so good. I like the fact that I don't have to drive all the way to K-town to experience Korean Spa. This place is clean and quiet (maybe I came on a less busy time). They have different dry sauna rooms: charcoal, himalayan salt, geranium; then steam rooms, jacuzzi, cold tub. All of those you can experience for $20 admission only! If you want service like massage, etc then you have to pay additional charges. I tried the scrub+massage combo. It was pretty good experience. I am just not so use to hard scrubbing, so it hurt a bit to me. I did tell the lady to make it softer, but I guess my skin was just too sensitive. So that part was not the best for me (haha)... it was good though to get your body cleaned, but next time I will be more specific to tell them what I want. So far so good, I recommend all of you in the area to try. :-) read more

I am one clean noodle! I considered going to a high end spa to get a body Polish and facial for my birthday gift. I'm so glad I went here instead. I got the body scrub with massage package and I can honestly say that the only time I've been cleaner or softer is probably when I exited the womb! So many layers of dead skin exfoliated, it's unreal! My skin is glowing! They did a light exfoliation on my face and put on a vitamin pack /mask... Pretty close to a facial without the extractions. I'm happy with the amenities offered here. I'll be back.... With my mom, sisters, cousins and friends ;) Only 2 small details preventing a 5-star review: I wish they had more face towels so that you can transition from the steam room to the sauna and have something to sit on fresh everytime. I liked the facilities and there were a number of great sauna rooms. I found it a little distracting in that in the coed rooms people were talking on their phones and having loud conversations. I also got a body scrub and massage. Body scrub was good but the treatment room didn't have an ounce of privacy. It's awkward when someone on the next table would turn over the same time as you. It would be great if they would add a curtain between the tables. Staff was also nice and explained the rules and i saw people constantly cleaning. read more

Descanso is extremely clean with a lovely atmosphere. big open rooms. plenty of parking. favorite co-ed Korean spa now and I've been to many! there's also a beautiful peaceful view in the common area! I like to come here during the weekdays and do my conference calls from the atrium! Only suggestion I have for them (and wouldn't take a star off for this) is to add a vegetarian option to their menu. they're always willing to substitute when I ask it would just be nice to have that option! This place is dangerous stay away! So my husband and I went here for the first time for a couples swedish massage. When we got there we were greeted by a young man that was hardly excited to welcome us as first time customers. If fact he just handed us the clothes to change into, locker keys and told us to change and meet back in the front to go in for our service. I had to ask him multiple times where the locker rooms were, where do we go etc and he just gave vague brief info. Anyway I wasn't gonna have that upset me. Moved on to changing room and when I saw the clothes I had to put on I was really grossed out. It was like a hospital style shorts and shirt. No robe or slippers. I can understand the no slippers, it's a korean spa afterall, but to put on shorts naked....hmmmm I think not! So I kept my underwear on and when I met my husband in the lobby he said he did the same, so we laughed about it. Then the same person at the front tells us that they needed to set up the room as it was not ready and we need to wait. Mind you it was already past our appt time. Again, wasn't gonna let that get to me. Once finally inside we were greeted by two ladies for the massage. From the beginning things seemed off. Halfway through the massage I heard my husband groaning in pain and looked over. I couldn't see much since there was a curtain between us but interestingly he was still face down while I had already turned over. It was only the last five minutes that the lady had him turn over which I thought was odd since we had reserved the same massage. Once over and when they left the room my husband immediatly started to complain about the pain asking me if my therapist did the same things to me. It turns out that she had jumped on his back using the bars on top to hold herself and had given him the massage the whole time with her feet, knees, elbows etc., which later I came to discover it's the accupressure message. When I asked her about it she just kept repeating "no swedish massage, swedish massage." Well my massage wasn't like that and I was next to him, and no swedish massage I have ever gotten involved jumping on someones back. When we complained about it at the front the same stupid guy said he has to ask her why she did that so we had to wait for her. It didn't make sense why we had to get an explanation from her anyway she spoke zero english and who cares why, that was not the massage we had booked for. We waited anyway and when she came she basically threw a fit in korean and the guy said she said she used oil so it was a swedish massage. Really?! Zero apologies, zero empathy, took us for stupid, wasted our time and money. A day later now and my husband has bruises all over his back. Check out the picture. So you say why is this place dangerous? All reputable massage places the first thing they ask you when you go in is whether you have any illnesses or injuries that they should be aware of. This place, zero questions. Imagine someone with a bad back that only goes in for a relaxing swedish massage but instead has a middle aged asian woman jump on his back what serious problems they could have. Great first visit! Front desk was super friendly and helpful! The women's wet spa was spacious and lovely! It's very well stocked with beauty supplies. They have a large hot tub, cold tub, salt wet sauna, wet sauna, and a dry sauna. NEWBIES - Yes, you MUST be naked in the wet spa. Don't worry, nobody will pay you any attention. Also, please keep your voices down in the spa :) I had the body scrub with a lemon and seaweed massage with Jackie. Jackie was awesome. She was both extremely thorough yet considerate. I loved the massage tables here! They are not as slick as the plastic ones at other K-spas. Sensitive skinned folks - BE AWARE - your skin may look a little sunburnt (rosy red coloured) afterwards but it WILL go down in a few minutes. No worries. Your skin will look fabulous and be silky smooth for days! I recommend getting a massage after the scrub because the oils will help soothe the skin faster. The lemon and seaweed massage oil smelled heavenly! Jackie really made sure to bust up any lactic acid and work out all the knots in my body. Newbies and fellow wimps (like me) - they are quite aggressive with the deep tissue massages here. If you can grit and bare it, you will feel good afterwards. The cafeteria has a wide assortment of yummy dishes. They have a little outdoor patio beside the kitchen. I had the dumpling soup and a patbingsu (korean shaved ice)...so amazing! I really enjoyed the different themed rooms. They have a Himalayan Salt Room, Yellow Clay Room (mildest hot room), Oxygen Room (cool room to take a nap in), Cold Room (inbetween the hot rooms), and the Germanium Room (hottest room). Over all, uncleaned, cold spa. And unprofessional cooker and salty food!!! The food were sucks. Seaweed soup and ramen were so salty. We had to put a bowl of hot water. Spicy rice cake tasted like pepper rice cake. Not only food taste bad but also the lady who cooks was very unprofessional. She cut fruits and mochi right after she went outside to smoke. In other words, she didnt wash her hands after smoking!! I wonder if she has food handler and/or food manager certification. Second floor spa was cold and uncleaned. We came here to get relex and warm up in a raining day. However, after staying couple hours we got cold! As tip, take a blanket or stay in one of hot room most of time. I love this spot close to my house!! They remind you of the mask mandate and keep everyone safe and clean. They also respect your health or medical conditions and work with you on that end. Their facilities are clean and spacious. It's truly a gem in Tujunga! You don't have to go all the way to Ktown for this spa and they also have massage and facial services!! You can spend a few hours here indulging in self care and come out so relaxed and with glowing skin!! Highly recommend the sauna and salt scrub!! Happy i discovered this place down the street from my parents' house. First time today... I went for the 1.5hour scrub/aroma massage package and had no clue the scrub wasn't just light exfoliation but a lady going at it for 40 minutes with what felt like sand paper gloves in a public room with you all naked... it felt surprisingly good. Then she drenched me in oil and massaged me nicely (again all nakedin a public room). I'm sure they have private rooms for non-scrub massages. My skin feels rejuvenated and I feel like I've put down a 100lb wt... then I spent 2.5 hours enjoying the facilities. It's very clean and new... everything you need it has. Not busy on a weekday. It is clean, nice and the staff was very friendly. For those new to the Korean spa, be forewarned, you are expected to be naked, thats right, bare, in the area of the pools. There are plenty of towels for you if you choose for a little modesty, which is always encouraged in places where nudity is the norm. There are 2 pools, one hot, the other is cold, a steam room, and a dry sauna. There are plenty of sit down showers, as well as many standing showers. My only real concern in the spa area would be to suggest more seats, as the two existing chairs were always occupied by someone and their personal items. As far as the cafeteria, it is good food, and good selection for Korean food, but when I compare it to other cafeterias at their spas, I find they needed to take one more step to make it perfect, otherwise it has a lot of flavor. All in all, I will return, and bring my nudist friends, and will try the restaurant as well! read more

This was my first time at a spa like this one, I was a little skeptical about it but I embraced it and enjoyed my time here. Jackie was amazing and made me feel comfortable during my treatment, which was a body scrub, massage (with oil), mini facial (with vitamin pack mask). I felt smooth and brand new afterwards!!! Where do I begin? So many dissappoinnents... The young man at the front desk, did not answer or help me in anyway ESPECIALLY after I let him know it was my first (and now my last time going there) I went back to the locker room THREE times, before I could move onto the resturant. The resturant.. was no better the yoshinoa but cost more then double at $18 for a basic bento box really? I have to wonder was it because I'm not asain, prices went up? So UNRELAXING how can you enjoy the facilities WHEN you have to leave the completely nude mens area then get dressed in govt. (Chairman Mao) issued shirt n shorts. Then go upstairs to use the dry saunas, it was an exhausting process. All the other korean spas I've been too are completly different...everything is located togather so you could stay nude, no need to dress and undress to walk upstairs to a different area all togather. This has become one of my favorite K-spas. Very quiet and relaxing. The temperatures of the steam room, sauna and hot tub are just about ideal. I've been to some spas where the steam room temp is so hot that it's painful, and can only tolerate a few minutes. Although there is only one hot tub, unlike some spas that have a warm tub and a scalding tub, here it's at a happy medium. Everyone here is very friendly, unlike the seemingly rude service I get at some. I would have given 5-stars if it had longer hours than 8:00am to midnight, as I sometimes like to go at odd hours. read more

Been going to the spa since 2017 and have gone there at least 5 times! They have all the spa staples (i.e. jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, cold pool and shower) plus more! Upstairs you will find sleeping rooms, different themed cold and hot rooms, cedar room, outside patio and a korean restaurant! Be aware that inside the sectioned spa area there are no clothes allowed. So if that is not your cup of tea, be forewarned. I've also tried one of their scrubbing services and it was okay. read more
