    Pan Dulce y Palmier

Im so glad I found this place! Desert Bakery is an absolute gem in Desert Hot Springs. If you love pan dulce, this spot is a must. Their conchas are perfection--soft, fluffy, and just the right amount of sweetness with that classic crunchy topping. I could eat them every day! The whole selection of pan dulce is fresh and made with care. You can tell everything is baked in-house--nothing tastes mass-produced or stale. I grabbed a little mix of treats and had zero regrets (except not buying more). The shop is small and full of wonderful smells and cases full of treats. We ended up buying several to share with our hotel staff. Definitely adding this to my regular stops whenever I'm in the area. Support local and treat yourself--you won't be disappointed!

Shout out to this hidden gym tucked away in Desert, Hot Springs. I used to go to Stater Brothers for my Bolio but now I can get fresh baked Bolio clouds from this establishment. Prices are reasonable. Customer service is fantastic and the place was clean.

The vast selections of sweets is outstanding and very delicious. And then there's the food. Your traditional Jewish deli. The food has alway been great for both breakfast and lunch. We've never been for dinner but I'm sure if lunch is great, it should be as well. Stopped by after a hike for lunch which wasn't that busy as it was Thursday. Majority of the people were dining inside as it was still pretty hot. They were only utilizing the front part of the patio the time we walked in. Service was great with our waitress. Didn't get her name but she was a doll. We both just wanted a sandwich which they do have a very good selection. As alway, pickles and sauerkraut was brought to the table. It's a classic. Sandwiches, we had the pastrami with fries (like chips) which is an addition fee as it tends to come with coleslaw or potatoes salad. And the tuna sandwich with coleslaw. Both are pretty decent in size and stuffed with meat. Pastrami was quite tasty and juicy. Only downfall, it's literally just meat and bread. You add the extras yourself, ie mustard or pickles. The tuna sandwich, with lettuce, tomatoes and red onion was quite tasty as well. The food has always been tasty and great. Portion wise are pretty big so there tends to be leftovers for a lot of people. Breakfast is a must as it's alway busy especially during the weekend. It's one of our favorite place out here in the desert.

So being from Los Angeles, where, when I was growing up, we had a fantastic Jewish delis, the idea of hitting up a place that is still around that still sells the food that I knew in love was too attractive to pass up. To say that Sherman's was a disappointment would be a massive understatement. The egg salad and chopped liver sandwich was pretty bad. First there was barely any egg salad on the sandwich at all. And the chopped liver was Bland and had a really bad consistency. You'd be better off ordering Nationwide delivery from Russ and Daughters. The matzoh ball soup with chicken and noodles was equally bland tasteless. Not to mention the fact that the matzo ball was curiously hard for should be velvety soft. The service was fine, getting my orders wrong multiple times. First, they brought me the matzoh ball soup with no noodles. Then they brought me a pastrami sandwich, even though I ordered egg salad and chopped liver. Sherman has the veneer of an old school Jewish deli with without any of the quality food. Whatever nostalgia I might've had was decimated once I started eating.

Melissa was very accommodating with the shorter than their recommended lead time of about 3.5 weeks versus 4 weeks in advance and was very responsive throughout the entire process through email with the final confirmation over the phone. On the day of the pick up, they also remembered we were coming in from LA and followed up with us to make sure we were going to get there before they closed at 4PM. They had a wide variety of flavors to choose from that could be cake, but we settled on traditional chocolate, one of the flavors that allow for a custom design. We sent them an inspiration photo of what we were looking for along with the color scheme and they absolutely knocked it out of the park on the looks. The cake was well received by everyone at the party. Since I was unable to get one of their more daring and creative flavors as the custom cake, I did go ahead and order a dozen of their Dubai chocolate cupcakes and very much enjoyed them.

Even though our wedding guest count was 33 people, we asked for a 50-guest cake and I'm so glad that we did because still enjoying the leftovers 3 days later!

A few days before the event, I called to order an 8-inch cake and was originally told I could order one and when I called back to put the order in I was told they couldn't make one because they had already baked several 6-inch and 7-inch cakes and needed to sell those first. They suggested purchasing a 7-inch cake along with cupcakes to ensure there was enough for everyone, which seemed reasonable, so we went ahead with their recommendation. We requested pastel decorations and birthday writing for the occasion, paid in advance, and arranged for pickup around 3:00 p.m. on the day of our 4:00 p.m. party. Unfortunately, when my sister arrived around 3:30 p.m., the cake still wasn't ready, causing a significant delay. She eventually received the cake and cupcakes and rushed back to our cabin, arriving late to the surprise party. Shortly after she got back, the bakery called me and informed us that they had accidentally given her the wrong cake and asked us to return it. The cake she received was beautiful, decorated with flowers and a lavender drip design, but it was the wrong flavor and a smaller size than what we had ordered. We were then told that our actual cake was still at the bakery, but it was completely plain white, with none of the pastel decorations or writing we had requested. At that point, the party had already started, and instead of greeting family and friends who had traveled from Los Angeles for this special occasion, we were dealing with a very stressful cake situation. To their credit, the bakery was kind and tried to make things right. They allowed us to keep the cake we had received and delivered additional cupcakes to compensate for the smaller size. Most importantly, every single dessert was delicious. The cake was moist, the cupcakes were fantastic, and everyone enjoyed them. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the lack of communication and apparent miscommunication among staff, which created a lot of unnecessary stress during a milestone celebration. The baked goods themselves were excellent, but I hope they can improve their organization and order management because the quality of their products truly deserves it.

Check their socials, as they're pretty good in updating the days/times. We ordered: +a slice of banana bread - this was wet and soggy, so not sure how this is even available for sale +a slice of carrot cake - this was extremely dense and decadent, and good for any carrot cake lover +an oatmeal cookie - large and had a nice crisp/chewy texture +a chive scone - super dried out and had absolutely no flavor +a hibiscus drink - super weird beverage; not sure if it was mixed with something, but it was not enjoyable +and, a milk tea - this milk tea was not prepared well; contained some pearls I was curious about their sandwiches and their pizzas, but the latter is only sold as a whole, and not by the slice. All in all, we felt that the items were misses; not worth waiting it out unless you are spending a few days in the area or are a local. Note that there's usually a line, moving along at a slow and steady pace, and they allow only 1 party in at a time. There is no seating inside, as this is strictly carry-out only. I had the opportunity to visit with Mrs. Pickles and she was just a sweet gem. Although we got there at 11:30 and they had already sold out of all of their full pies and pot pies. Mrs. Pickles was very friendly and took time to explain the ordering process how we can call in orders and things like that. I am so glad we came in here and gave it another shot. If you are driving by this little place that looks like out of a storybook stop in you'll be glad you did there. Remember to lineup an hour before they open to get your best selection. Also, while you're there, walk around and look at the amazing job, they did outside the restaurant of planting some sustainable food. They did a wonderful job with their espalier apple tree they started along one side of the building. In addition, it looks like they have a fabulous looking raised bed garden that they've got started. Also, is your walking in? They've done an amazing job setting up sustainable plants and a spectacular looking irrigation system. This time we will be calling in and placing some orders beforehand. I believe we got two pies that were two different berry mixes among other things. My husband wolfed both down because he ate one and loved it so much that he had to eat the other one. Mind you, my husband has grown up eating pies his whole life. His grandma used to make them from scratch all the time when she was still alive. So pies are a very sentimental and favorite food of his. I got the chicken pot pie, absolutely delicious. I'm obsessed with chicken pot pies and this one super hit the spot. Hubs is so very sad that we don't live close to the Pickles at all. We just happened to be in Big Bear on vacation and decided to stop by to grab some pies to take home. Our cousin was with us and got one slice to share with her parents and they ate it all. It wasn't enough. We all wish we had more. We'll definitely be back when we're back in town. Shoutout to Mr & Mrs. Pickles, your love and craft really shows in your food. Mr. Pickles was so nice too! He was taking the orders and tending the register. It's also such a cute little whimsical cottage, I love it!
