I recently stopped by Shahrzad Mediterranean Market & Grill in Richardson, and I have to commend…read morethem on one thing: portion sizes. Being a buffet, the food is plenty. You can pile your plate high enough to feed a small medieval village, which is good, because you're going to need all those calories to recover from the sheer emotional confusion of the experience. The portions are endless, but the flavor profile has apparently been locked in a witness protection program, because it is nowhere to be found. I ate a mountain of food that tasted politely like nothing, as if the spices took an extended vacation and forgot to notify the kitchen. To make matters worse, I scooped up some Baghali Polo, which visually looked so authentic and picturesque that it belonged in a travel magazine. Unfortunately, eating it felt less like enjoying a traditional Persian meal and more like stepping on a tactical minefield. One second you're having a pleasant texture, and the next you are crunching down unexpectedly on hard, undercooked rice bits that threaten to violently separate your molars from your jaw. The only redeeming grace of the entire operation is that the owner is genuinely one of the nicest, most welcoming human beings on the planet. He greeted me with such warmth that I couldn't even bring myself to look angry, forcing me to sit there at the all-you-can-eat bar chewing my acoustic-hazard rice with a pained, polite smile while questioning every choice that led me to that table.

Well, he wasn't lying! It smells great when you who into this place and they have an amazing variety of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food items, including a huge salad bar with every kind of olives and toppanade you could think of. I couldn't believe the size of these breads which you'll see in my pics on this review, they are huge and only $5! That's crazy, I was making stew that day and bought some bread for dinner later and oh yes this bread was fresh and delicious. They also have a restaurant next door but it was early so I didn't try it this time but I will next time, this place is definitely worth checking out.

It's definitely an Asian restaurant and it reminds me of home, though being an Asian myself, it's a…read morelittle odd to see its patrons and staff as mostly non-Asian. The market has a lot of diverse wares, both Asian-centric and more generic foodstuffs. While the meat and vegetable sections were decidedly cheaper, and much better bargains for your money, pretty much everything else is either market value or pricier than other Asian markets. I would caution, as other posters have mentioned, to check the expiration dates of anything you want to purchase, as I noticed lots of stock on the shelves was already expired. That might also mean even items marked with a later expiration date may not be as fresh as advertised. As with most authentic Asian markets (maybe ones not named H-Mart), it isn't the cleanest, nor does it smell that good, but you're not there to sleep or live, haha. The setting doesn't necessarily reflect on the quality of food, especially if it's packaged or sealed. I'd personally pass and try to find another Asian market, but if this location is the easiest or closest for you, especially given the paucity of Asian markets in Texas, it's not a terrible choice.

For years I have found expired items. I thought they we're doing better after the renovations but no.
