I used to order from here all the time. But each time I have ordered, the quality of the food and service keeps getting worse! When I first began ordering from here they used to be decent with the amount of portions and now it's like you order a meat dish , I get like 3 mini pieces of chicken. Spiceorgasm! This is one of the reasons why we live in Bushwick. We had chicken tandoori and shrimp Biriyani. Chef Mizan prepared them carefully for us on a quiet Sunday afternoon, and we absolutely loved the tenderness and juiciness of the tandoori! The Biriyani plate was smokey and full of spices that made love to my mouth. It was incredible. Server Shahen is always very cheer, and very attentive, so we genuinely enjoyed our experience here. Favourite place in the Bushwick area for some traditional Indian Cuisine. I'm a very frequent customer when I'm in the area--their chicken tikka masala is one of the best I've had, and there are plenty of vegetarian options if that's what you are looking for. My wife took me here for my birthday, the food was excellent. The portions were big and very fulfilling, we ended up taking food home. The service was great, we were treated very well and since my wife mentioned it was my birthday they were nice enough to give us a complimentary desert along with a birthday song lol. Had a lovely meal at Desi Grill tonight, featuring a chicken korma, eggplant bharta, and mango lassie. All the dishes were well prepared and subtle in their depth of flavor, with particular credit to the texture and spice of the Bharta! The atmosphere of the restaurant is refreshingly upscale for a neighborhood Bushwick joint (white tablecloths, shocking!), however I for one appreciate the change of pace from the usual fare around these parts. I live nearby and have gone here several times despite the really below-average service. But after my last visit I'm certainly never coming back. First of all, the food is good but not that great. I personally think they overcharge for what you get (quality AND quantity), but then again it's New York City. The thing that really annoyed me was their rudeness, which I've experienced each time I've gone. Minor annoyance: I had gone to use the bathroom and when I returned to the table the waiter was refilling water at my table and blocking my seat...and he refused to move aside so that I could take a seat. He even started giving another table refills and still wouldn't move, and it's not like space was tight, this guy just didn't want to move. I'll admit that this is a small nitpick, but it's illustrative of the inattentiveness the employees/owners have. The most annoying thing about Desi Grill is how long it takes to receive the bill. Why a customer should ever have to ask to pay for their food is beyond me, but it seems like when you do ask, they'll purposely take even longer. Last time I've had to ask 3 times before getting a chance to pay. It's not even that they're busy serving other customers. I just always observe them hanging out near the register and being completely inattentive. It seems like they do this as a way to keep patrons at their tables for as long as possible. Every time I've come in it's been pretty empty, so I would imagine they'd like to show off what little customers they get. But in doing so they've actually lost one. Do yourself a favor and go to Tres Hermanos just a few steps north on Starr Street. The food is better, cheaper, and-- funny enough-- the venue is always packed. read more

I am a huge fan of Desi Grill. I live nearby and the food is always delicious. I have been ordering and even dined with them several times. I am a supporter of local businesses. Food is very yummy.. however, 3 stars bc last night I ordered delivery & this is the first time they screwed up for me. I ordered around 9pm. Two curry dishes. One came without any rice. Please tell me how can a curry dish be enjoyed with no rice? It isn't a big deal bc they are nearby. I have patience. I waited. The lady reassured me the rice is coming and apologized for the mistake. (Cool no worries)...another 45 mins passes by. I call again. Reassures me it is on the way. (Okay thanks..finally get to eat it with rice! :D ) Another 30-45 mins passes by...(what the hell??) I called for the last time. They close at 11pm btw...and I hear arguing in the background btwn her and Im assuming a delivery guy...she STILL reassures me its coming after 2 hours and more. I wait some more, hoping they left it at the door or something. I know for sure they arent coming. POINT of all this is. NOT COOL. DO NOT tell your loyal customers to wait when you know you are not going to fix your mistake. I know that this is just a rice we're talking about but it is more about how you handled everything. I've really really wanted to like this place & kept holding out hope that things would improve .... sadly, I'm officially throwing out their menu & never ordering from them again. Gripe #1 .... STOP LYING ABOUT HOW LONG THE DELIVERY WILL TAKE! A 90 minute wait is utterly unacceptable. And it happens each and every time we order. Why is it my food magically appears at my doorstep 15 mins after I call back to complain? In the time it took for Desi to deliver my order, I could have driven to Jackson Dinner and actually enjoyed my meal. Gripe #2 .... overall, the food is inconsistent & subpar (real morgh korma shouldn't taste like maggi chicken broth cubes). The only item they got right is the Naan. Not all the dishes are the most authentic Indian cuisine (my family is from there) but as far as good dependable Americanized Indian food goes for a decent price, I think this is pretty great and convenient. The naan is excellent and all the tikka (BBQ) are very authentic and perfectly done. The vegetable options can be a bit bland (strangely pureed spinach) sometimes so stick with the rice, lentils, fish and meats. Delivery gets there pretty quick and the restaurant is BYOB so that's a great option. Lunch special is a deal! read more

One of the waiters has the awful habit to disappear into the bathroom just before lunch rush in order to audibly snort his nose or clear this throat there for quite a while. He eventually--equally audibly--spits whatever he has found into the sink. You can hear it all over the place. Sometimes, I am too hungry and broke to escape to Northeast Kingdom down the block. Sometimes I'm not. The rice is usually overcooked, the rest of the food is ok at best, definitely not worth a lot more than $8 for a lunch special. read more

The customer service here is awful. My girlfriend and I used to frequent this place. We've been ordering from here for close to a year now and we always get the same thing, and this time was no different. We ordered appetizers and about 30 minutes into our meal they decided that the entree my girlfriend has ordered least a dozen times before couldn't be made and gave no explanation as to why. When we complained we watched as the workers huddled in the back and and talked bad about us. After investing so much time we decided to just split my food and after all that the food was cold. I like the chicken saagwala. Chicken is tender and juicy and the spinach gravy is the bomb. I go here after work sometimes and I always notice the floors are slippery. I don't know if its the type of hardwood floor they use but be careful if your on heels! They make the food pretty fast, I'm able to pick up my order 10-15 mins after calling in. They claim on the menu that they only use white meat, but what little meat was in there was mostly dark and none of it was prime cuts. The saag with homemade cheese also had very little cheese in it. The response after inquiring (they lost our order when dining in, and gave us the wrong item when we ordered delivery) was rude, defensive, and included hanging up on us. We thought we would avoid the less than stellar dining atmosphere by ordering take out, but were also disappointed by their phone manner and refusal to correct their mistakes in our order. I've tried the saag paneer, butter chicken, and doused samosa here. They were all delicious! The portion sizes are pretty good. I easily spend ~$25 each time I get food here but it usually leaves me with an ample snack / light meal for the next day. When I dined out, Shaheb gave me stellar service and even gave me free dessert. *Homie move* Probably felt pity for me as I went in accompanied with a book for dinner.
