Its been about a month since we had Rick do countertops in our kitchen and two bathrooms. We love them. After getting three estimates from the usual granite and quartz countertop companies, we set up an appointment to visit Rick in his showroom- almost as an afterthought. But my wife fell in love with the unique look of Rick's work, and he answered every question she had, including whether these can be repaired if something bad happens (they can be). He was great about communicating with my contractors what needed to be done to prepare the countertops for his concrete work, and would also have been able to have someone do that if my contractors couldn't. Rick did a wonderful job re doing my failed concrete counter tops! My old counter tops were peeling and chipping. He was able to go over the counter tops and up to my back splash, around my already in place sink and make it look like it was the original job! Great job and he even came back and fixed some places that needed sanding with a big smile on his face! Rick did a very poor job of painting our kitchen cabinets. Rick was arrogant, defensive, and unwilling to fix the errors he created i.e. paint did not cover cabinet surface, paint chipped in one week, cabinet handles did not align, and cabinet handles were not tightened securely. Job was done in 2012, got our money refunded in 2013, and hired a real professional painter to redo the job in 2014. Looks beautiful today!! read more

We contracted with Designs by Rick, Santa Rosa, CA, to re-finish our kitchen counter tops and backspash in a custom concrete-epoxy finish. The firm was cited in the Press Democrat. They should re-name the company Disaster by Rick. He does not like visiting the job site so he asks you to pick-up samples and drop off by the tree in front of his workshop. He only saw the jobsite once before beginning the project. He works with a plumbing contractor to remove and install the sink. Rick's work was shoddy and inconsistent. The backsplashes looked as if they were finger painted and were in different designs and color. When we commented, he said they were still wet and would dry differently. We paid his bill but the next day after drying, the backsplashes remained different and amateurish. Our painter and contractor agreed. We called him to ask him to come back to look at his work. He refused! Our painter tried to explain but Rick was rude and insulting to him. We tried to appeal to his professional integrity - his response: "You paid me and now I'm done. " The next day his plumbing contractor came by to pick up his tools. He told our painter: "This really is poor quality - I'm surprised he did this. Rick told me not to even come back here to finish installing the sink." We then had to replace his "work" with a tile backsplash at much added expense. We've kept the old boards and photos for anyone who wants to see them. Several of our neighbors who had once expressed interest in using him saw the work and wisely lost his contact info. The contract we signed was written in lay legalize by his wife. It does not contain a performance clause. Beware!! You'll need one if you contract with Designs by Rick. His lack of professionalism, quality and an atrocious, immature attitude except when he's selling you is why we rate him a "1." read more

We contracted with Rick to do some countertops for a house we had in Fairfield, CA that we were getting ready for sale. We could have done granite but his sample designs looked better than what you can attain with granite. The countertops ended up taking him a couple of days longer because the epoxy layer, which is the last step, wasn't cooperating. He came back, without my prompting him, to correct the situation. After all was said and done, they looked great and everyone from real estate agents, potential buyers, and other people we had working on the house, had nothing but good things to say about the countertops. They ended up being one of the main selling points for the house. read more

We contracted with Designs by Rick to change a butcher block table into a French country distressed table. Could not have gotten better service. Excelled customer service. Took several visits to get it where we wanted it and Rick could not have been any nicer. We are delighted with the final result. We plan on using him again for another piece of furniture. read more

Terrible work and a terrible attitude. Rick did an awful job painting my cabinets. I went back-and-forth with him trying to get them done correctly and they never were. I gave up. His attitude was that he gave me a good deal on the job. I guess that means you get what you pay for! Rick helped rescue us from our golden oak with heavy tiger stripe grain cabinets! He sanded and filled them and then transformed them into custom appearing by a oyster paint and amber glaze which he masterfully distressed to give such charm. He also designed a mantle for us including distressed wood mantle with hinges and concrete to replace tile. When rick was working, it was the first time over 1 month renovation that I did not worry! We had the good fortune of learning about Rick via YELP. When we contacted him, we didn't have much hope that our stained, cratered concrete countertops could be revived. How wrong we were! Rick did a beautiful job from start to finish. He transformed a kitchen and two bathrooms, perfectly matching the color chips we gave him. He and his wife, Jenn, run a well-organized business, giving quick estimates, meeting at the shop to show samples and discuss possibilities, and promptly returning phone calls and emails. Having Rick and his assistant working in our home was comfortable and low-key, and they did a great job of cleaning up before they left.
