I happened to be strolling through the Upper East Side one afternoon when I came across an adorable bake shop located within a quaint brick building. My sweet tooth encouraged me to peek into the window for further investigation. I had never heard of the bakery and its bland name, but immediately noticed its Zagat food quality rating of 28 posted in the window. At that point, I knew that I had to forgo any pledge of healthy eating to indulge with a pastry. I entered the store and drooled over mini tarts, massive cookies, and other decadent goodies. I greeted the man behind the counter and inquired about the history of the shop. Apparently, it had been around for a few years and was the highest-ranked bakery in the city, according to Zagat. After a lengthy internal debate, I decided to order an Oatmeal Raisin Cookie, assuming that it might be healthier than some of the more elaborate treats. However, the doughy disk was gigantic. The addicting, homemade flavor tasted like raw dough packed with cinnamon raisin seasoning. I was completely entranced by the tender doughiness and proceeded to devour the entire cookie within 5 minutes. I even went back for a second visit a month or so later, at which point I sampled the large Chocolate Chip Cookie that was stuffed with chunks of dark chocolate. The treat also possessed that same raw dough flavor. I had to muster up my restraint to limit myself to only a few bites, so that I could deliver the rest of the calories to my brother. Dessert Delivery was the true hidden gem of my dreams. Their affordable and tasty delicacies really define the word "treat". I first found Dessert Delivery a few years back when I'd had enough of a coworker (the office party planner) torturing us with Buttercup's cupcakes (I find their cupcakes rather dry and the frosting to be pure sugar without much flavor). One day, I just kept walking and stumbled on Dessert Delivery. WHOA what a difference! The selection of what they offer is so incredibly creative that I haven't even gotten to the cookies yet. There's so much more that draws your eye as soon as you walk in -- the floral bouquet cakes, the mini cakes and OMGoodness those cupcakes. Their chocolate confections are so incredibly rich that it makes you wonder if they haul it in by the truckload. Tip: It's especially rich in the chocolate butter cream frosting. If you really love the stuff and you don't go with the chocolate flourless truffle, then go with a chocolate/chocolate cupcake and you'll see what I mean. The almond turc (twice-baked croissant) -- is a guilt-ridden dieter's nightmare, but it's worth every single bite. The checkerboard cake is buttery and filling. I guarantee if you leave it out on your desk at work, people will constantly stop and ask, "What's that and where'd you get it?" My only regret is that I no longer work in the area and I can't get to Dessert Delivery as often as I'd like. But it's my go-to place when I want to do something special for friends' birthdays and celebrations, or when I just want to treat myself. So unlike most of these reviews, I haven't been to their location. I may be one of those "fat, lazy people who either doesn't know better or are unwilling or unable to get off their ass" ... or someone who recently moved out here who has a very caring and concerned mom. My mom had a massive chocolate cake delivered to my office on my birthday, since she was worried that my birthday would be overridden by apartment hunting and being cheap. She's probably right, she usually is. In any case, I believe that the 10-inch, 1000-pound mountain of chocolate is their Chocolate Mud Cake, but I'm not sure. It was delicious layers of moist chocolate cake and thick chocolate cream frosting, with walnuts mixed in. Very, very rich, but delicious in moderation. I think that what really made Dessert Delivery stand out in my mind (not that I have a lot of experience with cake deliveries) is that the top of the cake was personalized, and the top of the box came with candles AND matches taped to it. It also came with a cake knife and enough plates, napkins and forks for everyone. Very nice touch. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone (a few new coworkers told me they love my mom) and there is still some left here in my fridge, if you'd like a piece! read more

This little shop is so cute with a ton of different offerings in all sizes. We settled for two things. I got the mini strawberry shortcake. This was really just a bunch of perfectly sweeteened whipped cream that glomp hugged a piece of cake and happened to pass by a few strawberries. It was so good! My friend had the raspberry chocolate ganache and had to fight her way through the ganache to get at the cake and get bits of it onto the fork and into her mouth. After feeling burned out by the dessert trucks around NYC, I knew it was time to go to a dessert place/bakery. And this place was the closest place to where I was staying while waiting for a delivery from UPS. I went in. There weren't many people in the store. The owners seemed quite proud of their yummies, making sure to talk about how some of their goods were on Oprah and everything. I had a really hard time choosing what to get. But, in the end, I decided on a chocolate chip cookie, a slice of carrot cake, and a red velvet cupcake. Sadly for you chocolate chip cookie fans, it's prettier looking than it actually tastes. Go over to Levain's on the west side. For those of you, who like carrot cake with raisins, their carrot cake is amazing! If not a fan of the raisins, move on. There's absolutely no reason why you should feel sad...there's other yummy desserts to be happy about! The best thing about their place is definitely the red velvet - it's the reason why you go out and buy red velvet cupcakes. Forget about the red velvet from Magnolia Bakery or Crumbs. I love Sam and his lovely store!!! The store is cozy, warm, full of life and energy!! Be forewarned, DO NOT TALK ON YOUR CELL PHONE while in the store; it is rude and there are signs to warn you of this. Now on to the yummies and there are quite a bit to chose from!! I love everything in this store! When I use to work nearby, we would order birthday cakes from DD. Then when we had functions at the job, we would order huge platters with a variety of goodies. Everything is moist, fresh (some are seasonal like the strawberry napoleons - one of my favs) and unique. I think anything with chocolate here is a must try!! "Say it with flour" is the motto of this sugar paradise tucked away on east 55th street. And apparently their flour is saying big things: the cookies I got are about 4 inches x 3 inches and over an inch tall! When the guy put my chocolate chip supreme and peanut butter chocolate chip selections into the bag it must have weighed a pound. For two cookies! And not only are they sizeable, they are delectable. Seriously good stuff. The cookies are soft in the middle and packed chock-o-block full with huge chunks of chocolate and slabs of peanut butter. Best chocolate chip cookie I have tasted since moving to NYC. And at $2.50 a pop, they are a pretty good deal, considering that it will probably take me about a week to get through one. Besides the mondo cookies, they also feature a ton of miniaturized desserts - individual cheesecakes, tiramisus, tarts, layer cakes, etc all beautifully presented and the perfect serving size for an individual. Of course, they stock the usual fare from cupcakes to eclairs to muffins, but the mini dessert are so well done it is hard to tear your eyes away. This place is famous for shipping their cakes nationwide and I think the bulk of their orders come from custom cake creations. Dessert Delivery is a delivery operation. They (primarily) buy cookies, brownies, cakes, and desserts from New York City's top bakers (per Zuh-gaht) and deliver them. They do have a cute li'l shop in midtown, but I would think they are primarily interested in delivering large doses of sugar to fat, lazy people who either don't know better or are unwilling or unable to get off their ass and find something truly worth the massive calorie count. Mirroring the minimal creative effort that goes into their operation, I too have decided to "distribute" my opinions based on the findings of the top yelpers that have sampled them - with some texture of my own experiences at DD. So, here's my take on what the top food critics at yelp experienced: "Say it with flour" is... their... motto... LOOKS a lot better than it tastes... I really felt that you could taste the flour... but... I needed it NOW... the... Hawaiian sex... cookies... were... ginormous ... but... soft in the middle... like... putty in your hands...and... took an entire afternoon to finish... meh... I had heard so many great things about this place and their ginormous cookies. I think I had actually drooled all over my keyboard once just looking at the pictures posted online. No other cupcake place in NYC would deliver for free and they were insisting I order a minimum of 16 cupcakes. Dessert Delivery let me order a dozen and happily delivered it for free within the hour. Meh. I walked down there yesterday to pick up a lil' pick me up. I bought a white chocolate chip and regular chocolate chip cookie. Both were of good size, but doughy tasting and soft. I prefer my cookies on the harder, crispier side. The lady behind the counter was super sweet :) To satiate my cookie craving, later that SAME day I went to Birdbath. Located underneath a faded wooden sign and nondescript door is a cute neighborhood bakery. There's a small eating area beside the main room. The service is served with a smile. The confections are beautiful and tempting. I came in to satiate my craving for carrot cake and asked ignorantly, "is this made from scratch?" My husband was appalled. I take my baked good seriously and I know better than to assume. The owner (who was insulted) answered, "yes, everything here is made from scratch and on the premises". I'm glad she was insulted. It's how I know they care about their product. That said, I've had better carrot cake. There was too much cream cheese frosting and not enough cake for my taste. There were raisins in the cake... also a no-no for me. Other than the carrot cake, they offer whole premium cake selections, whole specialty cake selections, fruit tarts, mini-cakes, petit fours, dessert platters, cookies, sliced cakes, fruit bars, brownies, brittle, fruit pies, cupcakes, sandwiches, specialty coffees, breakfast, ice cream, sorbets, gelatos and.... flour-less, dairy-free and/or sugar-free cakes. I love this bake shop. It's unpretentious and just no-nonsense. It's all about their dessert offerings, and boy do they pack in goodness. I've only tried the cookies so far. The chocolate chip is A+. A place with a great sense of humor too! I've lived in the neighborhood for over 10 years now, and I truly have not stopped in enough times. It was one of the places that truly captured the classic upper Manhattan feel. I'm not sure what the backstory is, but I think the 'hood already misses Sam and what he had to offer. I remember the first time I walked by the shop and peered in on a Friday evening. The shop was closed, but Sam invited me in to share some fresh Challah he was having himself! I love this place! I have yet to visit the physical store, but they've come through for me twice in the past year when I've had to get cakes delivered for friends' birthdays. I tasted the Chocolate Raspberry Ganache I ordered for one of the friends and it was AMAZING -- and free delivery to boot! Another time I ordered the Cookies-and-Cream cake and it too was amazing in look and taste. Although sadly, that cake had to be delivered outside the free-delivery zone, but the charge was much better or at least comparable to other delivery charges with the lowest minimum for delivery. I called and ordered a cake to be delivered to my hotel for a birthday. The price was right, they called my cell phone when it was delivered to confirm. I thought that was a really nice touch. Ask behind the counter and they will give youe a discussion of the black and white as well as it's history. like the fact that the black and white is really a hand cake and not a cookie. Okay, so my review for Dessert Delivery was written almost two years ago and I have a few things to add: Let's start with the chocolate chip (or more like chocolate chunk) cookie. The chocolate chip/chunk cookie is cookie-doughy in the center and soft. The good part is that it's massive and more than enough to split between two people. The man actually cut it for us, which was nice. However if we're going on taste and taste alone, dare I say it was a bit salty/sugary for a chocolate chip cookie. However, after experiencing Levain every other cookie just seems subpar to me. Next up is the Magic Bar. If you are going to have anything from here, go with the Magic Bar. It's a solid 3.5 stars of baked...magic. Their small cake section is adorable. If I was celebrating something special and I wanted to get someone a mini-cake, I would certainly consider getting one from here. On the weekends, they have Challah bread available that is made fresh from somewhere in the Bronx, I think? And finally, is this a cafe or a cookie-to-go place? Because there are a few seats and a sitting area with a serve-yourself coffee section but no bathrooms. Work on the bathroom accessibility, Dessert Delivery. read more

The owners of this cute midtown shop are very nice, but that doesn't excuse the poor quality of the desserts they sell, most all of which I don't even believe they make (rather they accumulate them from other bakers -- see Atif's review for more details). I bought a ~$30 apple pie from them today. it was -- bar none -- the worst apple pie I have ever purchased. Worse than what you'd get from a supermarket in the suburbs! I was shocked. Pasty white, bland crust (no butter, I'm sure), uncooked apple chunks, bland "crumble" on top. I really cannot get over how awful it was. For shame! On other occasions, I have gotten small treats here. The cookies I've found to uniformly taste like flour. Blech. But the fudgy brownies are okay, although they're nothing you can't make at home. Bottom line: I'm writing this for others out there. Don't make the mistake I made and buy that apple pie. It looks quite good in the display case, but you can't always judge a pie by its crumble :-P read more

I'm from the DC area, but my mother was having a hip operation at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC, and I wanted to have some cookies delivered. After reading the positive reviews here on Yelp (!) I gave Dessert Delivery a call. The woman who answered could not have been nicer, friendlier or more helpful, and my mother and the entire floor of the hospital are still raving about these cookies. Apparently they are like manna from heaven! Surprisingly, the cookies came in a plain white box with no sticker or anything indicating the name of the company, and there was no card (they included a gift card from me, but that also did not have the name of the company). My mother called and asked me to get her the info both for herself and to pass along to all the people who keep coming in her room for more samples - I plan to tell the company that they need to put their modesty aside and slap their name and address on their boxes!!! read more

NY Desert Delivery used to have a beautiful shop and website and their cakes were simply beautiful works of art- to say nothing of the melt in your mouth taste...my daughter is having a first birthday and I went to the new owner's website thinking I might give them a try- The website is terrible, the cakes look like boring cheap grocery store...nothing like the beautiful colors and design that Sam the previous owner used to have...So long NY Desert delivery that used to be- a great loss to the neighbourhood and city! read more
