On a rainy weekend morning, we snuck into Billy's to get out of the rain, and sat, dry and warm, in a corner sipping my coffee and nibbling at an Everything Croissant while locals came in and out, some for daily coffee, some for vacation treats, and some to pick up big orders for parties of various sorts throughout the day. The friendly folks at the counter were hustling and bustling to attend to each customer while a lady in the back was decorating cakes, probably for the next big party. A nice snapshot of Chelsea through the eyes of a local bakery. But most importantly, a damn good cup of coffee in a pleasant and happy corner of the island. I have been ordering and going to Billy's for their cupcakes for 20+ years. The last 3-4 times I have gone there the cupcakes were dry and hard. Today I stopped in to pick up some cupcakes to bring home to my kids. There was one young lady working there and two people ahead of me on a Friday evening. I waited for 10-15 minutes while she struggled with the espresso machine. I walked out. Hire some more workers Billy's and throw away or donate the old Stale cupcakes. yikes. i didn't think the baked goods looked good here, so i didn't try it for the longest time, even the month i lived above the shop, but i heard that the banana cake was good, and i love banana flavored sweets (and wish there were much more of them available!) i came in on a saturday at 3pm, and there was about two slices worth left of the banana cake. it was a decent size slice for $7.50. however, when i got it home and tried some, the consistency was like banana bread, not light at all, only a bit of banana flavor, and the icing was cloyingly sweet. i was not into it at all, and it tasted how it looked. with so many other places in the city for refined desserts, i absolutely do not recommend billy's. read more

The Hello Dolly bars, my former favorites have gone from a hefty bar loaded with coconut and nuts to a flat, non-descriptive bore of a dessert. This is a review specifically for the SHIPPED cakes. TLDR: unless you are a die hard fan... don't get it shipped, better enjoyed at the bakery. We are longtime Billy's supporters of over 10+ years. In fact, they made our amazing wedding cake, which is why for our anniversary we decided to splurge and get a banana cake shipped to us. First - the lead time on the delivery is a week. Don't expect to order it on a Monday and get it by the weekend. Second- the shipping packaging needs MAJOR improvement. The cake is not sent with any ice packs or instructions, other than a sticker that says "do not refrigerate." No guidelines for serving or storing, nada. (Also from a marketing POV a sticker or postcard would have been a cute touch, especially if this was a gift!) The cake is in no way safely packed, it's literally shrink wrapped and tossed in a box. There is no protective padding, or anything keeping your cake from being tossed, etc. While it doesn't affect taste, don't plan on getting something that is pretty that you can serve at a party. Overall, we are grateful to have a banana cake to celebrate our anniversary with, but not sure if we'd splurge on having it shipped. That said - swing by the bakery and get a fresh slice for the best experience!! read more

The service at this location was great! As for the cakes, the best cream cheese frosting I have EVER had. The cakes were sweet, but not overly sweet. They were moist and tender but not too fluffy, which I loved. I got the carrot cake slice and the banana cake slice. Would recommend both 1000% The only complaint I have is the portion sizes. I called and they told me they would remake my cake and deliver it by 6pm. Then a different person emailed me back and said the opposite. They didn't offer any sort of make good or even apologize via email. My experience with this bakery was extremely disappointing. I ordered a Custom Cake for my partner's birthday and was told the color I requested wasn't available. However, I noticed cakes on the website featuring that exact color. I was told the cake I wanted most resembled the Bridgerton Cake and that I would be receiving that design. However, I did not order or pay for the Bridgerton Cake, which is a lower-priced option, and the color I requested isn't available for that design. When I clarified that I paid for a Custom Cake, I was informed they don't make "special" frosting colors because it's "too time-consuming." I ordered for a Custom Cake and expected that level of service. Unfortunately, this was my first and last experience with this bakery and will not recommend it. read more

I have been a big fan of Billy's bakery so it's sad that I submit this review but I think it's important so others are aware. I ordered a cake and cupcakes to be shipped to a friend for her birthday. Although they arrived in separate boxes both were severely damaged (see photos). I contacted the company hoping for a reimbursement or an offer to send another order but got nothing in return other then being told I need to address it with UPS. I asked them that they had engaged UPS for delivery - I did not and therefore they should interface with UPS but they wouldn't help me and so the victim (m) ends up with no compensation for what they did wrong. I had always loved Billy's cakes and cupcakes, but I recently stopped in for a few cookies. Since I had plans for a few hours, cookies were easier to pack in my purse to save for later. However, once I arrived home and took a few bites, I found them all very bland. The Snickerdoodle, Confetti, and Chocolate Chip "varieties" all basically tasted like the same sugary base with cinnamon, sprinkles, or chocolate chips thrown into them. With so many cookie-focused bakeries in Manhattan (such as Funny Face Bakery), I would not come back to Billy's for their cookies, only cakes. read more

With so many cake options available from Jersey City to Chelsea NYC, the trip for a Billy's Bakery cake should be well worth it. Unfortunately, it is not. The customer service has declined. No greetings, no hello, no smiles and unable to accept a $100 bill to purchase a $40 cake. Their "decoration and bday greeting" was barely basic with spoon indentations and ZERO effort in writing a clear Happy Birthday. Instead of Happy 50th Birthday she wrote Happy Biethday 50. (yes, it looked like biEthday). Who says Happy Birthday then the age, lol? I fixed and made more presentable with a bunch of hershey kisses ;) The icing was spread very thin not like it was caked on before. The cake itself was dry and not as moist at it was once before. The cake itself seemed old and not as fresh as it was always sold. The cake itself was dense and not as fluffy as it always was. Billy's is a great little bakery in Chelsea, just below 23rd street. When my wife and I are out for a walk in the area, we find this place to be a good stop for a snack. They have excellent cupcakes in a variety of combinations. They also have cookies and brownies as well. My preference though is to go for the cakes. We like to get a slice of cake and share it. The cake slices are mammoth hunks of deliciousness: moist cake and thick layers of dense frosting. Last time, we got a slice of golden cake with chocolate frosting. So good.
