3 1/2 Stars Deux bakery does so much that is right on an everyday basis that it was a big surprise that the croissants we ordered for a family 4th of July brunch were only average: in taste, in conformation and in the natural things a good croissant exhibits: flakiness, crispiness and buttery-ness. Yes, of course some of these qualities were happening: just not enough of any on these attributes. Deux took a "special order" for these which lead me on thinking about this that the croissants were bake-off from frozen. Why did i think this? Making Croissant dough is a time consuming process: working the dough, and then re-working it and then re-working it. It is not something you can take an order for "off the cuff" per se. I may be wrong of course but as in Don Quixote..."the proof is in the pudding." So whether they were prepared from fresh dough or from frozen bake off: they were in fact, underwhelming. An evaluation that i would usually give to a place like 85 degrees or other bake off from frozen bakery. Deux is amongst the few bakeries in California that produces over the top quality baked goods. These croissant are below the quality that i expect from them. The Croissants themselves were not as crispy and flaky or buttery as any in my "Croissant Derby" (NE/Los Angeles bakeries only) and frankly i was/am disappointed. If these are bake off: Deux i feel was merely trying to make us happy by selling us something we craved. If the Croissant we picked up were done in house, their recipe needs tightening and re-evaluation. In either case, Deux will remain the place to go for baked good in Santa Barbara. I mean this place does excellent pies, cakes, breads of all types, etc. And does them beautifully. Miss Wendy and crew produces miracles in their small bakery. This hidden gem on the Eastside, has the best bread! I love the sourdough but they have many varieties to choose from! They also make the best dinner rolls. I think they are brioche and they have onions and cheese on top. Wow! Take those to your next holiday pot luck and people will be thanking you all night! Bought some pastries while on a group trip and everyone loved the cinnamon rolls (which are the size of a persons face!). Also tried the jalapeño ham and cheese pastry and it was the perfect amount of spice, nice twist on a classic. It's a very small location so truly just pickup and go but the selection and staff are wonderful. If we get a chance to come back to the area I will definitely stop by again. read more

Best bread in town! Located just off Milpas street, going to this petite bakery is a little bit like being in Paris. Fresh breads and scrumptious pastries baked fresh and pure. Get here early as they sell out swiftly. Blueberry walnut loaf is loaded with nutty~berry goodness. So good it doesn't need really anything. But it is extra delicious with goat cheese, butter, olive oil, poached eggs, and, of course, a strong cup of coffee or an espresso. Baguettes are excellent. The most amazing, perfect baguettes!!! The Sourdough bread is great too, but if you really want more sour get the Levain loaf. I'm in love with the Strawberry Scones... best scones I've ever had (I have not tried the other flavors, but have heard they are quite different than the strawberry). The Carrot Cake muffins are delicious. But the Pies.... the pies, especially the fruit pies for me, are so good, they are close to perfect!!! Not too sweet. You can actually taste the fruit. And the crust is incredibly delicate, tender and soft. If you like pie that is filled with a super sugary gelatin that overshadows the fruit... this is not your kind of pie. Thank you Deux!!! Well worth visiting - Deux Bakery. Their offerings continue to please. Tried the cinnamon bun today - though it may look heavy and dense, it's not, there's delicacy and good flavor. They also had a Ukrainian rye and banana bread especially are worth the visit to Deux . Want to provide a nice gift - buy a loaf of banana bread - people have enjoyed it big time. And am grateful that even though they are busy and could easily reject the special order request - the good news is they're going to have ready some loaves of chocolate cherry bread next week for pick up. Good staff, excellent offerings. Even though the bakery might not have a high powered internet marketing pitch as others do, they are definitely one of the best bakeries in town with quite a loyal following. I ordered a variety of pastries from Deux on a whim. I was going to be traveling north and wanted to take some goodies with me. I am SO GLAD I did!! Very friendly and prompt service... and the variety was excellent. I wanted a coconut cake for my 20th wedding anniversary/retirement party. Just a neighborhood affair on a weeknight but I wanted a festive but not storebought or weddingy-looking cake. Although only carrot and coffee cake are on the menu, they said they could make anything I want. The result was delicious and lovely! Dense, coconut not overpowering but just right, buttercream icing was fluffy and flavorful. My guests raved- even the ones who said they did not like coconut! Deux Bakery, you are #1 (Un) in my heart. Everything I've had here has always been a hit. Danish pastries (cheese, triple berry) are spectacular. Honestly, you don't need to go to Solvang, bc you can find the best Danish pastries here. I've had their raisin snail pastry and that was delightful as well. Each pastry I've had has always been so buttery and flaky, that I'm never disappointed here. I have yet to try their infamous cinnamon roll and croissants, but I'm looking forward to it. By the way, they do sell bread! So get your carb load fix here. The staff here have always been so helpful. Love the fact that they open at 6:30am since the other bakeries around SB don't open till 8/9am. There's a reason why this place has 5 stars, so definitely come check it out. read more

What a delightful and magical find. Living in Ojai, Ca, we lost several years ago a great bakery when the owner retired. They made, at the time, a wonderful assortment of baked goods, including bagels, which my family loved. Good News... while yelping months ago in the middle of Covid, I stumbled upon Deux. Wow, wow, and wow. Not only did I find a delicious assortment of breads and baked goods, but their bagels could also be some of the best in Southern California. Wow, that was the highlight of a wonderful day Saturday. We just went downtown to buy a mirror. We saw the farmers market and thought, hey, let go and pick up dinner after we get the mirror... On our way back from acquiring the mirror, we saw The Book Ends Cafe* sign out on the sidewalk in front of Antioch University. Thought, hey, its lunch time, let drop by after the market and try it out... at the market we get local ridgeback shrimp that was landed at the dock at 5:30 that morning. Im thinking this day cant get any better. Back to the Book Ends Cafe we had one of the best sandwiches we've had in memory, Lemony Chickpea on this amazing bread, in fact I could have been eating about anything with that bread and it would have been amazing! I asked the owner of the place, where do you get the amazing bread.... "well, its a great little local bakery over on Reddick St."... so off we went... the adventure continues... Then were driving down this side street thinking ok, where is this place, Deux Bakery. We pulled up in front, didn't look like much but all I cared about was getting my hands on a loaf of this bread that I had so many plans for already. Wendy, the owner, and Jesse, the baker, where there working away. Being a self taught bread baker I had many questions for the both of them. Jessie ended up given us a tour of the back when he found out I like to bake. It interesting to see the interworking of Deux. I only wish I had more than one stomach to enjoy all the offerings. The only down side of finding Deux is now I have very little motivation to bake my own bread now, I guess I will figure out something to do with all that free time. * Note, Book End is relocating and as of now does not have a new location. read more

Very small bakery with 2 parking spots, one which is handicap parking (street parking also available). I had the lemon/berry pastry and it was deeeeelicious! The scone was good, but too sweet. My kids loved the chocolate muffin and croissant. The one negative is they don't sell coffee! That would be a good addition. The ladies who work here are super sweet. I'm from out of town and they recommended some nearby drink places for me. I went in at 10am and unfortunately strawberry pastries and cinnamon rolls were sold out for the day, so if you want those, better go early! read more

Excellent breads! We can't stop eating their cran-almond loaf. Their sourdough is also to die for. I made grilled cheese with them and it was just perfection. On our recent trip to Santa Barbara, we stopped at Deux bakery on our last day. It was late so the selection wasn't as vast (our fault for not getting there earlier). We picked up a sourdough loaf and some pastries to take home. Well, the pastries didn't make it all the way home. They were tasty. The only reason the loaf made it back home was it wasn't sliced. The sourdough was deliciously crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. We were kicking ourselves for not having purchased more goodies. We'll definitely be back on our next SB visit and we might have to try out Scarlett Begonia too. read more

This is a wonderful discovery. I've been going once a week for the last month. The homemade breads are amazing, and you can get them whole or sliced. The variety of breads, from sourdough to multigrain are excellent. The best thing I discovered, however, was their croissants. The almond croissant is the best I've had since April of 1980. And the bakery products are now available seven days a week at their daughter's restaurant, the Scarlett Begonia, on Victoria Street in downtown Santa Barbara. In from out of town and in charge of some festivities, I was pleased to get a last minute birthday cake order for next day pick up. I asked Deux for a simple 8" vanilla cake with butter cream icing. Not much icing. Very simple. The pickup was seamless, 55$(!) but the cake itself was very dry and hard-ish inside. The icing might have been butter cream but was not sweetened at all so it tasted like ... well butter and cream. It was piled high on top with elaborate all white flowers and had piping around the top and bottom. Lots of frosting. When we cut into it, all the icing fell off the sides in small slabs, making for a messy presentation to dinner guests. The icing tasted rich and bland. You didn't want to eat more than a taste. I had been looking forward to having an excellent quality sweet-ish fix ( not what I eat regularly) so I am disappointed! I would freeze individual slices but it's not worth returning to this taste experience. Sorry. But thanks for taking the last minute order. read more

My family and I are hooked on their blueberry walnut sourdough ( so much so that my mom needed me to order one for each of her siblings in SF after her trip here!). I happened on this place while looking for some coffee and decided to pick up some pastries for my family. So wonderful! The cinnamon rolls are to die for (per my hubby, a cinnamon roll connoisseur!). I got some type of marmalade/dried mandarin slice pastry (I don't remember the name) and it was amazing!!
