Stopped by here for the first time on the way to dropping the kiddo at Nature Camp. Had a wonderful campus with multiple COVID-cautious options. Had an outdoor beverage tender so I could get drinks for the kids, and something frosty for Mommy. It was all cold and wonderful. Hubs went into the restaurant and got the fish n chips, pretzel, pulled pork, and buffalo wings. The fish n chips were out of this world. I am from the Midwest and often hope for a good fish fry. My heart skipped a beat as I had this flaky fish with crisp airy batter. Amazing! The pretzel was as big as our face and came with mustard. We didn't spring for the extra cheese. The pulled pork was a sizeable heap and served with a unique coleslaw (banana peppers?!) and equally quirky baked beans. My hubby ate it all on a hot day - so that is a compliment. The wings had a generous amount and were well cooked. Served with coleslaw, ranch, celery and a pickled tuber (rutabaga? Jicama?) which added an air of intrigue. It you like your wings crispy then this comes perfect. If you like them wet n saucy, I would tell them to add more buffalo sauce to make'em juicy. This was a surprise delight just outside of Wintergreen resort, South of Nellyford and Charlottesville. If you are looking for a nice ramble - I would wander this way. read more

It took a us a minute to figure out how to order food. We had only been here during Covid so having everything open was an adjustment. We placed our order and had a short wait. We were sitting outside. The stand out for me was the fried pickles. We were fighting over the last one. The batter was so light so you really just got to appreciate the bit of crunch. We also had the cheeseburger which was perfect, nachos (unfortunately they forgot the chicken) but the base was great. I had the fish and chips and the batter was light and the fish was flaky. This was easily the highlight of our long New Years weekend in the mountains. Of course, when you get days of rain and ice, anywhere spent outdoors in the sunshine will be a highlight. We reserved a private fire pit by calling the brewery. As of now, they only book 5 days in advance and book for indoor seating and covered picnic tables online. To reserve a fire pit, you have to call. When I did call, I had some issues with the phone line routing me through their system several times before I got a live person. To reserve, they require a credit card be provided and will only book for less than 6 people in accordance with Covid guidelines. We arrived right around our 3pm reservation time on Sat 1/2. They route you through a small building, which was a little off-putting to me. It would be much more prudent for DB to have someone seated outdoors to take reservation info in order to reduce exposure, in my humble opinion. We waited in line for about 10 minutes to give our name to the hostess and were walked through this building back out to the spot that we just came from (seriously.. doesn't make much sense). Once seated, our server greeted us, checked our fire and took drink orders. My dining companions (mom and dad) had a few questions and she tackled them with ease. Our drinks arrived very quickly and we ordered some food, which also came out surprisingly fast! The Brunswick stew, burger and Bone Dipper with brisket were huge hits. I tried the grain salad and definitely wish I had gone with something more hearty. We also shared the jalapeno corn muffins, which were out of this world delicious! I should also mention that we ordered curbside and stopped on Thurs afternoon before heading up the mountain - crab cakes with roasted brussels sprouts and cabbage, and veggie curry were so delicious. Hardly what I would expect from a brewery, but their chef and kitchen staff are clearly very talented. The food is great and the beer, so good! Service is on point, but they need to consider their check-in process for outdoor reservations, which was disorganized and probably not as sanitary as it could be. Still, it's certainly a must-try if you're visiting Wintergreen! read more

If you are camping at the campsite on the weekend with a dog... don't expect to rely on this place for food. We came on a Saturday and expected to have a meal here with our dog. The bartender informed us that they don't do to go food on Saturday's and so we basically can't get any food. They have "appetizers" but not to go food, if you wanted to eat in their multiple outdoor spaces. They have many picnic tables, but no food to eat at them. Very disappointing as a camper and as a "dog friendly" place. read more

My husband and I visited this location on a covid mini trip to Wintergreen Resort. It took less than 15 minutes to get to this location. We made a reservation for an outside covered seating area. The covid precautions were excellent and staff was very friendly, available, and attentive. We enjoyed two beers, a flight, and some snacks. The dry rub wings were Amazing! We were at Wintergreen for the weekend and decided to stop by Devil's Backbone for the lumberjack competition. We were going to eat in the restaurant or get takeout, but they weren't allowing it. So we ended up eating from the grill outside. The choices were really limited...bbq pork sandwich, turkey leg, turkey croissant, burger kinds hot dog and hummus. We ended up getting the burger, which was one of those frozen pre-formed Patties. They were okay. I went into the restaurant and got a Bloody Mary. It was pretty good. I just wasn't in the mood for a beer so I had the Bloody Mary and an iced tea. I would like to come back and try the food it's been years since I've been to DB, so it would be worth giving the food another try. read more

This place is family friendly oriented! Not to mention, dogs are welcomed as well. Plenty of space around. Restaurant, outside bar and restroom, & a gift shop. The food was pretty good as well. The waitress was helpful & friendly. I had a Citrus Wheat beer, resembled like a blue moon. Boyfriend had the vienna lager which was nice. Paired well with his brisket fries he ordered. I had the nachos & the beer cheese was pretty great too. I will say my boyfriends fries he had were a little over seasoned but the seasonings tasted good,. This is at least my fourth or fifth visit to Devils Backbone Brewery, and the second time I've had a sit-down meal in the restaurant. First, I love DB Vienna Lager, as I mentioned in a previous review several years ago. The overall facility is awesome, the distillery tasting was fun, and the people are friendly. The service is almost always very good, and you can't beat the warm and inviting ambiance. Family and pet-friendly makes a great venue for indoor and outdoor fun regardless of the weather. BD continues to invest in this facility, and it's grown into an impressive venue. It's also conveniently located next to the Devils Backbone camp with full RV hookups and lots of room for tent campers, which I would rate 4 or 5 stars consistently. The reason this review of the brewery/restaurant isn't five stars is solely on the restaurant. I could look past the price not quite aligning with the meal quality here as the choices of what and where to eat on the mountain run thin and tend to get crowded easily. Please do not misunderstand my comment about the meal quality; it's good, but there's nothing super amazing about food that was prepared ahead of time and brought out in less than 10 minutes. The price does seem a little strong, none the less that alone would not keep me from returning. Thinking back, it felt more like being in a fast-food restaurant that hands you a number to put on your table and then brings the food out to you. The only difference is we placed the order at the table vs. a line at the counter. We had an hour wait which was understandable for a party of six, so we enjoyed hanging out at the bar for some cocktails. We were there in the bar earlier for lunch, and the food and service there were great. This is about the restaurant's sit-down dining and service only. Once seated, we were advised that our order had to be placed using a QR code with our phones. There is no other option. We then spent most of our time deciphering and working the app on a small phone to read a large menu to get our food order figured out and then our payments sorted out vs. enjoying each other's company and catching up as we had initially intended. Further, the payment process is even more confusing and deserves a CONSUMER BEWARE WARNING [just short of a SCAM warning]. It feels like the payment system takes advantage of the patrons who do not know how it works and have had a couple of drinks or so. (What are the chances of that at a brewery and distillery?) The gratuity was automatically added at a healthy 22% for a wait staff that didn't take our order and didn't help with the order and didn't handle the payment. The confusion continues when making the payment, and the nifty "would you like to add a gratuity" options of "20, 22, or 25%" pop up WITHOUT any notifications that 22% was already added. The last one to pay noticed the scam and added nothing above 22%, while the others unknowingly tipped 42% or 44% and could not go back and make the correction. One person at the party did speak to someone about it and was only told "sorry" and shrugged their shoulders. We didn't make a scene, as we had some drinks and took it as a lesson learned, and if time permits, we'll address it in the morning. We didn't as we had to leave before they opened. I'm leaving a review to warn others as it's too easy to overtip the wait staff, that in this case really didn't do anything. I'm a good tipper normally, but I guess the new normal starts at 22% for parties of 6 [not 8 and 18% like it used to be], and now they expect even more for doing less. Perfect, that about sums it up. Bottom line: Enjoy everything DB has to offer, eat at the bar or outdoor venues, enjoy the facility, and camp. If you eat in their restaurant, lower your expectations a little and keep an eye on how the gratuities work and you'll be fine. read more

This place is situated at the bottom of the mountain and has great decor that welcomes you in. The menu has vast, unique options with reasonable prices. The food came out quick and fresh, and they were bursting with flavor. Nothing exceptional, but it sure hit the spot in all the right places with classic twists on dishes. I like this place a lot. It's big and open and every drink is pretty good. The staff is friendly, but when you're inside, you have to order using a QR code. That really upset my anti-government neighbor who was with us and he proceeded to tell my wife that Elon Musk tried to steal his identity with some sort of artificial intelligence. Like what? They use QR code for ordering. Very user friendly and you can time and order as you like. There are servers who are helpful and will guide should you have additional questions. We went on Saturday and had their Brisket Platter Special... IT WAS AMAZING. Highly recommended. Also had Lobster Mac and Cheese which was very good as well. Beer flight was perfect sampler to try new beers. Sat in the enclosed patio which was in my opinion much better ambiance than sitting inside. Most beautiful setting! The brewery itself is beautiful, beer is great, and the ambience is enough to have us come back time and time again. I was surprised though at how great the food was too!! This place is over rated. It's a always something when we try to come here for food and drinks. This past weekend it was short staffed sadly. The hostess just looks like she was bored of being at work, no upbeat or anything inviting to come and stay. The beer is all this place has going for them. The food is nothing special. The chicken dip prob was the best thing we got but the pita chips with it were stale and old. The baby back ribs were eh. The brisket Mac taste like it was box made with a few slices of brisket thrown on. Honestly the best thing bout coming here was our server William who was a badass with a million tables and great beer recommendations but also the beer. Not worth the drive or experience. Really cool spot, even during Covid when you can't do as much as normal. They were really organized and followed guidelines well. The beer was solid, and so was the pulled pork. I loved the creamed corn. Order that. What really stole the show was the open faced fried green tomato BLT. It's one of the best things I ever ever eaten. Out of the box, I love it. Note that at the time we dined here, you needed reservations. We didn't know this the first time we stopped, ended up not eating here for this reason, but we came back the next night with a reservation and all was good. The atmosphere is awesome. There is so much outdoor seating that is also covered in case it rains. They have several larger tables which are awesome for groups. We only tried one beer... because we loved that one beer so much we had to get multiple drafts of it. It was their Loved By The Sun draft, which is a peach mango beer. It was so light and refreshing and fruity. We loved it so much we got a 6 pack to go and hauled it across a few states back to our house. Added bonus: the to-go cans are also color changing! We got a jumbo pretzel for an appetizer, which was perfectly warm and soft and was definitely large enough for a few people to share. For our meals, we got chicken fingers and fries. Some of the best chicken fingers I've ever had. They were perfectly fried but not too breaded to where they make you feel blah. The chicken fingers are also huge, so we had plenty to take home and snack on later and the next day. Next time we're in Nellysford, we're definitely going back here. read more

This place definitely deserves much better than the 3 /2 stars it's received. We had a very nice experience and dinner. Pandemic time so we decided on a weekend in Wintergreen. Not much in the area in normal times, and less so now. So we called in our order, picked it up, and ate in our rented condo. Service, from the little we could tell via phone and fast pick-up, is phenomenal. Ordering over the phone was really easy, even with a bunch of changes to their mains. And picking up was equally nice and pleasant: park in a designated numbered spot, give them a call with your spot number, and they'll bring out your food within 2 minutes (my experience anyway ...). Only complaint, which I have to complain about for ALL carry-out nowadays, is that by the time we get our food back to our condo/home, it's just not as fresh as eating in the restaurant itself. Not the restaurants' fault --- just a sign of the times. The food is very good. We grabbed a variety of burgers and fish and chips and such. Can't complain. If we get to the Wintergeen area again we'll most likely order from here again. Or ... hopefully, eat in. read more

After a long day of snow tubing at wintergreen, I dragged my boyfriend here for some comfort food! He ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and I had the Mac and cheese with thick cut bacon on top and a dark Danzig beer. The prices were a wee bit high, but we thoroughly enjoyed our food! I don't think either of us spoke throughout the meal. My Mac and cheese was rich and the bacon was savory and generously dispersed throughout the dish. My beer was dark with chocolate accents. Our waiter was the sweetest man, who knew the menu better than any other waiter or waitress I've ever had. He was very attentive, and very personable. We are past customers. Walked up to the restaurant- not another customer in sight. It looked closed. We thought it might be because it's 3:30 on a Monday. We are taken to a our table with one menu for 6 customers. The waitress comes up with glasses and water and proceeds to tell us that we had to order from QR code. That was the only way to order drinks and food. You had to login with your email and credit card info before you could even look at the menu on the app. This was super disappointing because we've always had fun and enjoyed our server. We ended up walking out. This is a nice place and a fun environment NOT Chili's or Applebees. I hope they change this ordering system because it hurts the staff. read more

This place is just the coolest. Service is always welcoming, nice and quick. Their outdoor area is nice with games (connect 4, Jenga) scattered about. Nice location and beautiful scenery. They have concerts over the summer which is so fun! read more

This is a great hang out spot. The outdoor bar is great. There are fire pits and lots of outdoor seating here. It's great to just grab a a beer and hang out with your friends. Came in around 6 pm. Although there were lots of empty tables in the restaurant we were told we could not be seated due to a lack of servers. My husband told the three staff at the host station that we would wait at the bar and gave them his phone number to be called when a table was available. Bar staff were very friendly and helped him select a beer to his liking and me a low calorie hard cider. Also saw lots of cocktail's available. After about 45 minutes my husband checked and they said they had called him, but they had not. Bar staff seemed surprised that we had not been given a beeper. We closed out at the bar and went to our table. Server said their policy is for you to order and pay on an app. Since we are older and were getting tired and hangry, she agreed to take our order. I ordered asparagus appetizer and roasted toasty salad. Happy to see vegetarian, vegan and gluten free items on menu. My husband ordered assorted bar b q platter. Food was very good and came out quickly. Mixed review. We realize how difficult it is to hire adequate staff, but staff who were there seemed very disorganized. Probably will not return. We both find sitting at high bar stools very uncomfortable, and it was not a good start to what was otherwise a good meal. read more

We often stay in the area and we've been to this place a few times for just a beer, it's always been great even during covid when things got super weird, it was easy to order and the servers were also so friendly! We recently stayed in the area for our son's bday weekend and decided to have dinner here because it seemed to be a super kid-friendly place and it definitely is! We made reservations for 7pm because I wasn't sure how busy it would get since there aren't many restaurants in the area. I added a note saying it was our son's 6 bday and the hosts both wished him a happy bday and were super sweet. Waters were brought to our table right away and the server told us they were a little short-staffed, which we never actually noticed because our waiter came right away and took our drink orders: apple juice for the 6 yo man and 2 old fashioneds for the adults. For dinner, my partner and son shared a meat platter with fries for their side, I ordered the cyborg bowl. We all loved our food, service was great; I definitely recommend this place! read more

A nice dining option while sampling the alcohol spots in this area. The waitstaff is super attentive and sweet! They have a pretty large menu of both brews and food. From what we saw it was typical pub fare bar foods. There aren't a ton of updated pics online, so I hope this review helps. We had a special quesadilla and the wings. Both were a little expensive for what you got, but they were prepared ok and the quesadilla came with a side salad. The restaurant was VERY hot and there was a stale odor (beyond what you smell in a brewery). The stop served its purpose, but it wasn't an exceptional dining experience. read more

This compound was a great place to wander around and have some good brews. We dined at "basecamp" where their main kitchen is, but you can also order food from the distillery (with a limited menu). The basecamp tavern has a very alpine lodge vibe to it, and would be perfect in the winter. Ordering is easy, since they use the Toast tab app, and the servers are around to answer any questions. We ordered a flight of beers, as well as the lamb sliders, Mac and cheese side, and roasted veggie salad. The salad was very fresh and flavorful, but we didn't love that the roasted veggies were chilled, and the Brussels sprouts were almost too big to eat. The Mac and cheese was great, and the sliders were good, but didn't have any toppings except tzatziki sauce. The beers were okay - my partner loves Vienna lager, but apparently we chose poorly, because the only one we really liked was the Cherry Tannic Mania. Overall, we had a decent meal, but I would probably order just a full size Cherry tannic mania and some other food options for dinner. read more

Surprisingly disappointed in my visit to DB. dogs were segregated to a tiny corner patio away from everyone else if it was full of non dog customers than too bad for you. $40 for lunch just me wasnt that good, peed in a bathtub like I was at melon arena in 1993.
