I'm not sure how I've come to Mammoth so many years and not discovered Devils Creek. They are an amazing craft distillery off the beaten path. The interior tasting room is very nice and the owners are all super personable and very informative. We talked to all of them during our tasting. There is a nice variety of bourbon to taste as well as a rum. There were six people in our group and everyone found something they enjoyed. My favorite was the adventure series and we bought a bottle to take home. Another nice thing is that their cocktails are not an afterthought. We had one friend who doesn't like tastings and is just getting into Whiskey she loved the pineapple express. We also saw a table being served old-fashioned and loved the thought that went into the ice diagonally in the glass as well as the cute skewers through the cherries, and the shape of little skies. read more

I've been wanting to visit since they opened. I'm glad I did. From a corner table, it was easy to get caught up in the convivial vibe of this intimate room. There was also a group of 8 enjoying a private tasting occurring in the back room (which could easily hold a group of 30). The service was informative and the whiskey flight was a great way to sample their offerings. When there was a natural pause in the activity behind the counter, Clayton showed us where all the magic happens. Compared to what I experienced in whiskey tours in Tennessee, this was a clean, intimate operation. I'll definitely be bringing others for a visit. read more

I'm a bourbon guy first and foremost. I prefer wheated bourbons, Weller, Pappy, Makers, and a few others. I really liked the Bottled In Bond, and the Red, White, and Blue. I love that it's family owned and Mother, Father, and Son were working and very nice. Great service and knowledge. The ambiance was nice also. We grabbed some BBQ from next door, ate it here, and enjoyed our spirits. It was a great combination. Purchased two bottles each of the ones I mentioned. read more

I came up to Mammoth to visit my brother who had already been to the distillery a few times. It was a Wednesday so they were closed but the owner made a special arrangement to let us visit. So cool!!! He gave us the back-end tour where the whiskey is made and gave us a great overview of the whole process. Then we went to the front and thoroughly tasted all the products. This is for sure a micro-distillery so prices are a bit more than major producers but they were very special products. We bought 6 bottles to take home with us and I will look forward to the cask strength Rye and Boudons and the 100 proof Bourbon. The Rum was good too, get those soon as they will not have them for much longer. Highly recommended and yes if you want to visit on a day they are closed call their phone number and they will call you back!!! Oh and get a smokey old fashion when you're done tasting fantastic! read more

EMBERS - do yourself a favor and try the brisket at Embers. This has to be the best brisket I've ever had! Also tried the potato salad at Drake's recommendation and it's the best potato salad I've ever had. It has a tiny kick to it, nothing too spicy but just adds a ton of flavor. First off, I would love to complement the one of the owners, John. We weren't aware that the opening hours were later in the afternoon when we showed up around 130. He welcomed us in for a tasting and assured us we can call for a tasting at anytime and they can show up. They had bourbon and rye. We also tried the adventure series which we ended up buying a bottle to take home. John was friendly, informative, and gave us a tour of the distillery. We tried 5 bourbons and they were all good. We will definitely be coming back and bringing our friends here when we're up in mammoth again. read more

Loved this place! Found it on accident while looking for food and decided to check if out. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and super friendly, and the whiskey was great. They offer tastings as well as cocktail options. We walked out with two unique bottles. Great find, highly recommend. After seeing the billboard off the highway we decided to come in after a day of skiing. The place is a bit hidden but not too difficult to find. A family run distillery with the father who gave us the tour. I think normally the tours last about 15-30 minutes but our tour guide sat and chatted with us for awhile about the history of bourbon. We got to taste rum, bourbon, rye, and a specialty bourbon. We also ended up buying some bottles because we enjoyed the tasting so much. They make small batches and they seem to put lots of effort to making good spirits! Definitely recommend! read more

We were in Mammoth Lakes during the week so couldn't visit during the normal weekend tasting room hours. They really will arrange private visits during the off hours just as the website says they will, just email or call the Distillery and most likely they'll set you up. On the day of our tour/tasting John met us at the facility right on time. The distillery is in an industrial park but it's only a couple minutes from the main business district in Mammoth Lakes and it's easy to find. The small tasting room is nicely decorated and comfortable. John was an excellent host!! He was welcoming, friendly and informative. He was happy to answer tons of questions; clearly this business is a passion project for him and he loves to talk about it. I enjoyed sampling the rum, bourbon and rye. Truthfully, I don't drink whiskey so this was a new experience for me and it was a great introduction to those spirits. My spouse, who's more in to whiskey and cocktails than I am, enjoyed it even more. As a novice I can't really comment on the quality of the whiskey but I will say that my spouse liked it well enough to purchase a number of bottles to enjoy at home. In addition to the tasting, John showed us around the production room where he answered another ton of questions. It was super interesting to learn about how the whiskey is made. Bottom line: We had an awesome time at Devil's Creek! If you're in to bourbon and rye you should definitely go. And even if you're not but are willing to experiment, you should go. We'll be going again if/when we're in Mammoth Lakes again. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: A wonderful little family-owned distillery that's more passion project than business. Their billboard near Mojave on my latest trip to Mammoth caught my eye. A new distillery in Mammoth? With bourbon? The hubby and I are bourbon fans so I knew I had to check it out. Their tasting room hours are VERY limited, but I lucked out and happened to catch it on a Saturday afternoon with a friend after hitting the mountain. The owner, John, was manning the small tasting room counter (4 seats) and his son Clayton, the distiller, was hard at work in the distilling room. Clayton's adorable big black lab Bailey acted as greeter. They have three product as the moment: a bourbon, rye and a rum. The tasting is $7, which is waived if you buy a bottle. I started with the bourbon, then moved on to rye--both good--but it was the rum that really surprised me. I don't normally drink rum and kind of dismiss it, but this had a really delicious and distinctive flavor that made me sit up and take notice. John was a wonderful guide, explaining everything about their history, products, and how the distilling process worked in general (which I had no idea about). My friend and I whiled away an enjoyable hour or so tasting, learning a lot, and getting a tour (we happened to be the only ones there at the time). I ended up buying all three bottle so the hubby and I could enjoy at home. This is a truly artisanal operation that I highly recommend. read more

We were up in Mammoth for ski week (Feb 18-23) with 2 other families. We were looking through the local mammoth newspaper and read about Devils Creek! The distillery wasn't open on Thursdays for tastings, but I emailed John, the owner, and asked if he'd be able to open & do a tasting for the 5 of us while our boys were boarding on the mountain! John replied immediately and said he'd be happy to open for us, just give him a time to be there. Awesome!!! When we arrived, John took us into his distilling room (not sure if that's the correct name) and told us all about his distillery. He was so patient with us answering ALL of our questions. After seeing where the liquid gold is made, we went and sat down for the greatly anticipated tasting. We were not disappointed! We started with the Rum, then the Bourbon & then, the fabulous Rye! We spent a couple hours tasting and chatting with John. What a highlight of our trip! We will definitely return when we go back up the mountain! Thank you John! read more

I live in Mammoth over the winter and only was made aware of this place recently. I prefer to drink my whisky neat. Loved the Rye. Impressed how smooth it was at 55% alcohol. I am not a rum drinker, but after tasting it, had to bring a bottle of each home. Also very fair pricing, great atmosphere, and the family owners were great hosts. I'll be visiting regularly for sure. read more
