For a small store, the selection of frames at Devonshire is surprisingly extensive, unique and fashionable. Everyone is very knowledgeable and helpful. My current glasses came from Devonshire Optical. They are lucky glasses to have that tie. Devonshire seems to regard any glasses they have sold as some sort of family member, to be taken in and cherished forever. My glasses, no longer new by maybe five years, lost one of their nose pads. Based on many exxperiences with small repairs of all sorts of things, I was terrified that I would hear that I would have to order an entirely new pair of glasses, or, almost as bad, that the lost part could only be ordered from a dedicated maker inIndonesia and it would take six months. But no, the Devonshire angels tenderly took the glasses to the back, replaced BOTH nose pads, plus the thin plastic tobes that go over the earpieces. They did it cheerfully, even lovingly. Please do NOT trust your child's eye health to this store. My child's transition lenses were made incorrectly. This negatively effected her school work and everyday activities. We didn't realize until we went back to the eye doctor 6 months later, she had terrible results on her exam and the doctor realized her prescription was completely wrong! I found this store on Yelp after searching for places that could fix eyeglasses. I bought a new pair of glasses elsewhere, but that store could not adjust my glasses properly even after I went back multiple times, they would sit too crooked on my face or some other problem. I called Devonshire to make sure they could help me adjust even though I bought my frames somewhere else. When I came in, I was helped by a gentleman who was an absolute pro. He took one look at my glasses and adjusted them. They fit PERFECTLY! I was able to go about my day afterwards not worried about my glasses at all. He was so kind and did this for free. I have brought my daughter here since she was first prescribed glasses, third grade. She's now in 9th. At the time the staff was knowledgeable and always treated us so kindly. Solution oriented honest and helpful. We were loyal customers. However, my most recent experience was horrible. My daughter had an emergency at school, her glasses broke and couldn't keep them up, glue or tape them. Worst part, she couldn't see at all. I ran to Devonshire with her glasses to see if they had the replacement part to her frame or even a new frame where we could pop the lenses in to hold her up until she got new glasses. I was met with the worst street attitude (south Asian lady) I explained my daughter couldn't see at all. She rudely expressed they were out of stock and didn't have replacement parts. I saw several frames I was willing to buy in the interim until my daughters glasses were shipped. She stood there without a care in the world acting as if I was bothering her. She kept saying go elsewhere there's nothing she can do. Go buy glue. I explained my daughter couldn't see and she just shrugged her shoulders. I asked for John (owner and she said he's not around. I ended up searching Yelp for eyewear and found ilook. I sprinted there. They helped me out straight away! They didn't have a replacement but found a similar frame and popped my daughters lens in. The staff said we don't want your daughter walking around not being able to see. Very kind, caring, empathetic people. They have now gained lifetime customers. With that said, I've ordered my last frames (without the lens) from Devonshire. Only because my daughter loved them so much. Picked them up yesterday, and will never go back to Devonshire. read more

(Free) Magician. I stepped on my boyfriend's brand new glasses one morning and absolutely mangled them: popped out lens, frame twisted, and one arm point a very wrong direction. I found Devonshire Optical through reviews that referenced the store owner's wizardry. I was not disappointed. I was in and out within 5 minutes. I did not get his name but the man who helped was so friendly and calming. He let me know the risks to repair and went back to work, returning with a seemingly brand new pair. On top of that, he insisted the repair was FREE. I had such an amazing experience here that I almost wish my vision were impaired so I could patron the store and support my guy. I ordered an expensive pair of sunglasses from Devonshire Optical a few years ago. The owner tinted the lenses to a very dark black which made the glasses difficult to wear in many situations. My eye doctor was also displeased about their extremely dark tint. A few years later the dark tint on the lenses faded which revealed that the two lenses were actually tinted different colors. One lens had a red tint and the other a blue tint. I always felt very uncomfortable wearing these sunglasses, and now I know why. Devonshire Optical placed two different colored lenses in the expensive frames. They were tinted so dark that the actual color was unnoticeable. read more

This is a classic owner operated New York optician shop. The owner and staff are very experienced and helpful. I stepped on/bent my rimless (spirit titanium) Lindberg frames recently - such that one temple was pointing almost perpendicular to the other. I was fearful that good repair was not even possible but John (the owner) fixed it such that it is identical to new. For Lindberg frames (which is all I wear), this is pretty much *the* goto shop. Prices are comparatively either good (or best) and more importantly, the service/repair capability gives a peace of mind that is invaluable. Highly recommended! read more

I'd never found titanium frames to be fragile until I leaned on a pair of six-month-old half-rims that broke in every conceivable way: the bridge metal bent, a lens detached and the plastic thread under the other lens broke. One of the nose guards slipped off, hit the floor and rolled into the space just past the elevator door. Panicked, I called the place where I'd bought them and learned that the frame had been discontinued. By themselves, the lenses were useless. Then I read about Devonshire Optical and messaged the store to ask if there was any point to my bringing in wrecked specs that defined the term *hosed*. The owner John F. wrote back ten minutes later: "Bring it in. There's a chance we can help." I showed up the next morning and John F. appeared at the door. "I think these will be all right," he said, glancing at the dissembled casualty lying snuffed in its tiny hinged Kio Yamato coffin. "The challenge will be finding the same nose guard." He disappeared downstairs with my glasses and emerged just once while wrangling them in one hand that might well have been magic. While John worked, a gent named Manny freed each piece of eyewear I requested from its display case and placed it on my palm. Unlike any other optical salesperson I'd ever met, Manny *wrote down the model numbers of the frames I liked best on the back of his card*. He wasn't paranoid about my finding them elsewhere. He just wanted me to know what to look for no matter where I went. Twenty minutes later, John F. emerged with what looked suspiciously like a new pair of glasses. He'd unbent the frame, seated the lens, fixed or replaced the thread and also replaced the nose guard. No visible flaws were evident; my Kio Yamatos looked as pristine as they had the day I bought them. He handed them to me, then passed me a tiny packet with an extra nose guard inside. "Keep it in case you lose the other one," he said. When I asked how much I owed, the pittance John requested made me scan the room looking for a tip jar. In my short bleak life, this was the best experience I'd had in an optical store. After all, John hadn't merely *repaired* my glasses. He'd *resurrected* them from the tiny casket that became their case again. Is there a moral to this story, you ask? I suppose there is. Should you, friend, find yourself holding the shards of glasses you destroyed in a state of piano-bench-flinging intoxication and imagine to be past repair, I urge you not to give up. Instead, take them to Devonshire Optical. You won't be disappointed; you'll be amazed. Then find a way to video John F. so that we can know whether he melts your glasses back into shape with his heat vision or just has a way with frames. read more

I have a habit of flinging my entire body weight upon my very small pair of very expensive glasses. In this case, they were, almost, completely ruined. Totally out of shape, they sat precariously on the bridge of my nose threatening to throw themselves off at a moment's notice. I had broken then rebroken a pair of beloved glasses. Had them over 10 heads. 3 different shops told me there was "no way at all" to fix them, then tried to sell me on something they claimed looked exactly the same. Devonshire did acknowledge it was a tricky fix, but three days later my glasses were back in tip top shape. Pleasant experience and reasonable pricing. I collect vintage eyewear. Last year I made an investment in putting transition lenses into one frame and I was delighted. A week ago -- an unforced error is the worst -- I sat on my eyeglasses. The frame was mauled. One of the temples was clear off ripped from the frame. The other one was bent. The next day -- Monday -- I came in and met John, Devonshire's owner. He was kind and honest that there would be no guarantees - since this frame was much more fragile than today's. On Friday I had the good news that a repair was completely successful! I picked up the frames on Saturday and had the good fortune to see John again. He made the point of telling me to bring in the frame should there be any issues -- he guarantees his work. I was leaving for a business trip in 48 hours and my glasses broke. Sure I had contacts as a backup but I really wanted to bring my glasses. I was skeptical of the high reviews on Yelp but when I went to Devonshire I was treated like I was Prince Charles, and here I was brining in a 70 dollar pair of glasses to be fixed. The temple had broken and they said, come back tomorrow around 5 PM. I came back..they replaced both temples so they would match.I asked how much? They said, "Oh..$10 is fine." Amazing!!! What an amazing experience! I sat on my prescription glasses and one of the lens popped out. My first visit. I called and explained the situation and me. My frames were not purchased here but the staff assured me that I could still come in. The staff was professional, informative, patient and so very pleasant. My glasses were repaired and at no cost! Much time was spent with me and all my questions were answered about frames, different types of prescriptions and cost. I was totally blown away. AND they have expanded to across the street (Devonshire Optical Annex) that does only eye exams I believe. I inquired why they didn't just expand next door, "because they wouldn't sell it to us". I came in today FINALLY to fulfill my fresh lens for my glasses after delaying month after month to get it done. Devonshire even had it ordered FOR ME in anticipation. These guys are ON POINT. No sugar coating. Manny got my lens in and out within 10 minutes. Good thing too because if the lens took all day, I'd be struck by a roadside car for sure as I didn't bring my contacts. Or most likely being groping random stranger's shoulders until I reached safety... I'm glad I avoided all of that. The individual service I get from this place is always intimate and NEVER rushed whether you bought your glasses last week, last year or well I don't know how long you've had your glasses for... As any eyeglasses wearer knows, choosing new frames is no easy feat. It would be like if you decided to buy a shirt that you're going to wear EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR SEVERAL YEARS. So obviously, you want to choose correctly. After going to several Lensecrafters and Pearl Visions and being severely let down, I decided to check out this place (based on it's high Yelp reviews, of all things!) It was easily the best glasses-buying experience of my life. The woman working when I arrived was friendly and attentive, and asked me what I was looking for. I was immediately given several dozen pairs of glasses that were all in the exact style I wanted. I tried on pair after pair after pair, and she continued to offer her honest advice. It's important to note how much her HONEST advice helped me. Other stores will simply try to get you to buy whatever, but she seemed genuinely interested in the well being of my face. They have a wide selection of hip, stylish glasses to choose from and plenty of well lit mirrors to check yourself out in. I even came close to closing time, and a gentleman working at the time stayed a little bit later to help me out. This place is amazing. The glasses weren't exactly cheap, but they were all designer frames so it makes sense. It was such a friendly and pleasant experience that I didn't mind paying a little extra. read more

Very friendly staff, but somewhat disorganized operation. I came in one day and the staff person measured my pupils, took a copy of my Rx, and took note of the frames I wanted (for future reference, for when I'd eventually be ready to order) - she said she'd save it in their files. I came back less than a week later, on a Sunday, and they couldn't find any of the info on me that was supposed to have been saved. So, measurement was taken again, etc etc, and I put in the order for the glasses. I was told then that an itemized receipt would be sent to me later that same day, which I needed to submit to insurance. It was never sent to me. So I called the next day, Monday, and asked for the itemized receipt, and was told that the computer program that generates their itemized receipts was 'down' and wouldn't be up again 'until the end of the week'. I did eventually get an itemized receipt, but it was from Monday instead of the actual date of service [Sunday]. So I asked for one to be sent again with the original date of service, and it was. In the end, the glasses were mailed to me at my new address out-of-state, and they look great. I'm happy Devonshire carries the brand of frame that a bunch of optical shops in the city don't carry. Not to mention he was able to cut some existing lens I had to fit the new frames same day. We had to beg to be helped. We waited glumly in uncomfortable chairs while several batches of other customers needed to try on every frame in the store and ask a lot of questions about their feelings. The "help" we got was staff dumping a pile of frames out in front of my son and expecting him to "see something he liked." We settled on extremely expensive frames, and they broke almost immediately. We brought them back to have them repaired and the owner cheerfully charged us another $150. There are so many other places to buy glasses in New York. I went to my regular optometrist because I broke my glasses--a screw that connects the arm to the frame was pulled out. My regular kept the frames for over 3 days and then called to say he couldn't do anything with them but he could get the frames from the manufacturer for $150--$120 less than I paid for the frames less than a year ago. I googled "eyeglass repair nyc" and Devonshire was the first name on the list--BOY AM I GLAD! I spoke to a man on the phone who told me to bring them on over and he would see what he could do or if he'd need to send them out. When i got there, he took 2 minutes to determine that he could replace the screw and that it would take about 30 minutes--and cost me nothing! I told him I needed a case and would buy that from him when I got back. When I got back, he'd fixed them and found a case for me and said, "$5 for the case" -- a bargain! Then, when I gave him a $20 (all I had), he didn't have change so he said "No charge." I said, "No way: you just saved me $130--lunch is on me!" and left him the twenty. I now have a new optometrist! And I was, until this, very happy with my old one. It's so great to meet someone who really believes in customer service! read more
