I went back today to Manhattan Grand Optical because I'd recently gotten new glasses elsewhere (solely because Manhattan Grand Optical didn't take my insurance), but I just wasn't happy with the fit even after two adjustments at the other optometrist's office. The man who helped me was SO kind and SO professional, and he had no hesitation about helping me with my glasses even though I hadn't bought them there. The two pair of glasses I bought at Manhattan Grand in 2016 remain in regular use in 2025. The lenses in the purple frames were just screened by my optometrist in Cali as a baseline for a new prescription. Dr. Chin's Rx remains appropriate to my needs today, because she was so careful and sensitive to my requests. By comparison, glasses from a major retailer in 2019 have never suited me and one pair actually made me confused. So glad to see the business is still thriving! I have accompanied my boyfriend periodically over the past few years, and watched how they have handled things in great detail and with a very large degree of professionalism. I have never heard a word of complaint from my boyfriend, and he has very specific requirements. Recently he went somewhere else (because of a change of insurance), and he has not been happy at all - going back and forward with various issues. I remember the original Manhattan Optical was a huge store at the corner of Canal St and Center St from almost 50 years ago. My brother and 3 of 4 sisters wore glasses (but not me at the time) and a family friend worked there to help us with all our optical needs. Fast forward to 2022 and the store now located at the corner of Grand St and Mott St has added Grand to its name. One of the business' principle partners, Sal, that I remember from the old location is semi-retired, but still shows up at the store once in a while to help out. These days, the sibling team of Paul and Lillian treat us like family when we're there. Dr Lillian is the optometrist doing exams and prescriptions, while Paul pretty much runs the business from the front of the house. We chat about all the happenings in our families' lives and our kids, all while getting fitted for new glasses and contact lenses. You can check out all the latest trendy styles of frames and new high tech lenses and sunglasses in the display cases. If you have eyeglasses/contacts coverage on your medical insurance, have Paul check how much your allowance is for frames and contacts. Dr. Chin is gentle and patient with my high-maintenance eye needs and has been dead-on accurate with my different prescriptions for distance, monovision, and medium range. Paul and Albert are so kind, helpful, and friendly, and Tzefung is an EXPERT at quickly finding frames that are perfect for my style and face shape. He's so good at that-- like really, really good. I called to ask about getting new lenses in an old set of frames with very scratched lenses. They gave me a price that was WAY better than anyone around. WAY BETTER! I brought them over and paid and picked them up a couple hours later. They replaced the scratches up plastic lenses in VERY EXPENSIVE sunglasses with beautiful GLASS lenses AND shaped the frames like new. We had the best experience here!!! I live in L.A., and my teenage son was visiting NYC with his school when he lost his only pair of glasses. He's pretty nearsighted, and with his one spare at home, you can imagine I was panicked. It was Saturday night when we got the news and there was nothing we could do until the morning. Finding an optical shop that was open on a Sunday, that had his prescription in stock, and could make him a new set of glasses same-day, seemed like a long shot, but I started calling around 6am my time. One of my first calls was to Manhattan Grand Optical, based on their great reviews and the fact that some customers reported they got their glasses on the same day. I spoke to Tzefung who didn't have what we needed in stock, so I starting calling some other places. It was only about 10 minutes later I got a call back from Tzefung who did some extra digging and found exactly what my son needed! He decided to find my number and call me back, which was amazing. Within a few hours my son was able to get there (with a chaperone since he couldn't see well enough to travel safely by himself). Tzefung and staff were fantastic, so kind and helpful. They had a huge selection of great frames which actually was fun for my son since he picked a cool new pair. They used my son's recent prescription and offered us a variety of options for the lenses. The glasses were ready within an hour! Disaster averted!! And my son was able to complete his trip successfully, with a cool new pair of glasses and a learning experience he won't soon forget. I've been going to Manhattan Grand Optical since 2022 and have complete trust in them. I am a high needs customer (high astigmatism prescription and rimless frames with a custom lens shape). Dr. Chin has always nailed my prescription perfectly, the shop is able to trace and cut my custom lens shape and Tzefung is always super helpful. I also appreciate that you can test your prescription with the ad-hoc lenses by walking around the shop and reading signs out the window, which feels more helpful than reading the same chart over and over again in typical optometrists' offices. A great experience with purchasing my first pairs of glasses. I tried on a few pairs of glasses on my first visit, but didn't go off through with purchasing since my insurance wasn't active. I came back post active insurance and was able to purchase two pairs. My optician was beyond helpful and assisted me throughout the whole process. I have a pair of the Rayban Outdoorsman sunglasses. They're about 6/7 years old and the arms of the sunglasses are too long and made of a weird material, which causes them to slide down my face the moment I become active and makes them difficult to adjust at home. I love working with Tzefung who is very experienced and patient. I just bought four pairs of glasses! I misplaced my work glasses and they saved my eyes by having two new pairs ready in 4 days! I love my new titanium specs. They are feather light and hardly required any adjustment: the nose piece is perfect for my face. Now that I'm on a hybrid work schedule it's good to have pairs for the office and home. I have confidence knowing I purchased quality optical brands and that they stand behind their products. I had a pair break once and when I went back just within a year, they told me it was covered by insurance and got me a free replacement. From my first visit inquiring about progressive glasses until I picked up my glasses yesterday, the entire experience was wonderful. The corner store is bright and clean. Staff is very friendly. When answering my questions, they are very knowledgeable, thorough, and patient. Appointments are needed to get eye examinations. Dr. Chen is very pleasant and professional. They have a very good selection of frames. You can also bring in your own frame. It took a little over a week for me to get my glasses. When trying on my new classes, the gentleman was very patient. He took time to make sure that my glasses fit well and are comfortable. He also gave precise and useful information on how to get used to wearing the progressives. Excellent service and abundant choice of cool frames! Very pleased!!!! We were visiting NYC over the weekend but my daughter forgot her glasses ( long story but it happened) . We were scrambling to find an optician that could help us.. I called and we were lucky enough to have an opening with their doc who provided a prescription, my picky teenage daughter loved the frames. I loved the quality and special package pricing but most importantly, they were able to help us out and get us the glasses in an hour as this was more of an emergency situation for us. Daughter chose their "house" brand frames that are Japan designed and manufactured in either japan or Germany. Very stylish and quality seems really nice.
