Oh my goodness! I was on my way home almost in my driveway and I really wanted to check out a new bakery. Di Gennaro was about 10 minutes from me and the photos looked great so I decided to try. I will definitely be returning! The customer service was great and the food tasted amazing. The ham & cheese bread roll was so good I almost went back to get a few more. About a 3.5: This cute Argentinian bakery serves up some daily-baked pastries. We came here when they had opened, but I think that they were having a slight delay with getting their items out of the oven. I ordered a variety box of: +a Vigilante - with cream, guava, and coconut +a beef empanada +a chicken empanada +a ham, cheese, and pineapple pastry +a Square with sliced green apples I did order a Guava croissant, but didn't receive it in the box; not sure if they charged me for it, since I didn't ask for one (user error!). I also noticed that we didn't receive any sauces (ie, chimichurri) for the empanadas. Not sure if I caught them off-guard or something! The pastries themselves tasted fresh and not too sweet, and I feel like the best time to go is when they're open first thing in the morning; I also feel that their items do sell out quickly. In Richmond for a swim meet and stopped in for a coffee. This place was amazing. It's a simple store front that downplays the high quality. My lavender latte was perfect and the impulse buy of a dulche de leche croissant was a brilliant decision. It was phenomenal. I wanted to return to try the empanadas, but unfortunately, we didn't have time. I will definitely be back when in Richmond! read more

From Glen Allen to Midlothian is a fair hike, 20 miles each way. This little bakery was a great find, on my daughter's recommendation. At first glance arriving at noon, we saw the display case and felt disappointed at what few items were left. But it was more than great for us, as it turned out. The sweets -- a dulce de leche, a Nutella, and vigilantes, and alfajores -- were all delish, with the alfajores winning first honors. Good croissant flaky pastry well laminated. Each with great fillings / toppings. The savories -- a fried steak, a ham and cheese, a Hawaiian (ham cheese and pineapple) empanadas-- were all well filled with great ingredients. The steak was superb. We also got a cheese bread, well flavored and well baked. Coffee was fresh pressed and strong, very welcome. Caramel latte was also good. Di Gennaro Bakery is an absolute gem tucked away on Midlothian Turnpike! My wife and I stopped in for a casual coffee break, and it turned out to be so much more than that. The atmosphere is warm and inviting--Betty and son Nicolas, with the friendliest staff who make you feel right at home. We each had a cup of rich and perfectly brewed coffee, but the real standout was the Venezuelan ham, cheese, and pineapple creation I had. It was encased in a soft bread-like pastry that balanced sweetness and savory flavors most delightfully. Every bite was yummy and a testament to the care and skill behind their baking (Mr Di Gennaro). This family-owned Argentinian bakery offers an incredible array of fresh, authentic pastries and baked goods. From empanadas to specialty items like alfajores, it's clear they've perfected their recipes. While we didn't sample everything on this visit, the wide variety on display was tempting. The prices are great!...especially considering the quality, and there's ample seating to enjoy your treats in comfort. I wish I could give this place 10 stars! When I travel, this is exactly the type of place I like to visit. Local, family run with amazing food and service. You simply cannot go wrong with this place. The food is prepared in house and is amazing. From savory to sweet, they've got you covered. Please note, they are only open Fri-Sun. You'll not want to miss this place on the weekend though! This is truly a hidden gem! Nestled in the back of the Pepe's shopping center lies Di Gennaro Bakery. They offer pastries, empanadas, sandwiches, coffee drinks, and so much more! The person who served me who I believe is the owner was super helpful and offered recommendations. I got a Hawaiian croissant, baked chicken empanada, and a fried chicken empanada. They were all delicious! The filling was moist and the crusts were flakey and baked perfectly. The prices were very affordable too. I'll definitely be back to try more items. I really like this bakery. I just happen to stumble upon it on DoorDash and I was pleased. I ordered two days in a row. The cherry cheese danish is so good. I also like the empanadas. I can imagine their menu is more than the offerings on DoorDash but I haven't been there in person. I'll have to go there one day. read more

This is a hidden gem--and there's no reason it should be hidden! Went with no preconceived notions and walked out with a sugar high and new favorite local bakery! My family and I tried a variety of goodies, but for me, the knockout for savory was the ham and cheese with pineapple roll with a sweet glaze, with the fried steak empanada with an incredible churri sauce a close second. For sweet, I couldn't get enough of the alfajores!! The dulce de leche was just........ wow. And the coffee was decent too--it wasn't an afterthought, which they could totally get away with if they wanted to, with pastries as good as they are. But the coffee was GOOD! The bakery is accessible in all spaces, including the bathroom, which is very clean. I strongly recommend you check this place out! read more

What wonderfully nice people and such addictively good baked goods. If you have to maintain a gluten-free diet, yes, my love, there is something for you too! I tried them at the Que Pasa Festival, and I could not be happier that I did! The pan de yuca was addictively delicious! It is similar to Colombian pandebono on the outside, but the similarities end there. The inside is chock fu of a thick, soft, fluffy, white cheese with a slight bit of chew. The dough (made of cassava starch) is soft and tender with a very slight chew as well. It was purely heavenly! Some foods are so good that I could seriously eat them until I have a stomach ache, and this is one of them. Restraint is definitely needed here! I got my son the empanada with steak filling. It is not gluten-free, but looks amazing. It is baked and filled with chunks of saucy beef, sliced boiled eggs, and overall deliciousness, and it's served with the perfect companion--an herby, garlicky, and slightly vinagre-y chimichurri sauce. Ugh! Such a great combo! The chimichurri is divine on the pan de yuca too. For two generously stuffed cheese breads and an equally stuffed empanada, it was about $10.50, but soooo worth it! So good I would've definitely stopped at the bakery and got more if I passed it on the way home. I saw other yummies, like a Nutella croissant, baked chicken empanada, ham and cheese croissant, Milanesa sandwich, and more! The owners say they have different sandwiches and coffee, in addition to the sweet and savory pastries. Definitely check them out! I certainly know I will. WOW WOW WOWWW. This was one of the most unexpected bakeries here in Richmond. I'm from LA and have been struggling to find a good flaky buttery croissant and this place may have been one of the best ones I've ever had! I love this bakery. It's a small place located in the back of a shopping center. They have a lot of different pastries, empanadas and even sandwiches. I've tried their empanadas and most of their pastries and they do not disappoint. My favorite thing here is their strawberry smoothie! It's literally the best smoothie ever. I also like their chimichurri and tomato sauce with their beef empanadas. I could go on and on about their different pastries. Their ham and cheese sandwich is also pretty good. The staff never has any issues explaining what their different items are and are very friendly. The only thing I haven't personally tried is their coffee but my mom enjoyed it when I brought her here. I would definitely recommend. read more
