Rating: 5 stars I hadn't ordered from DiMatteo's in about 8-10 years, but I'm so glad I gave it another shot, it was absolutely worth it. I got a small cheese pizza with tomato and fresh basil, and it was delicious. Simple, fresh, and full of flavor. No complaints, no need for adjustments--just great pizza done right. I placed the order through DoorDash and picked it up in person. The staff was friendly, the place looked clean, and my order was ready right on time--fresh and hot. Can't ask for more than that. I'm already thinking about my next pizza from here. Definitely a solid spot in Hamden if you're craving classic, well-made pizza. read more

I always judge a restaurant on their plain cheese pizza. This pizza is super flavorful without being greasy. Great balance of cheese and sauce. I dont know what these other people are complaing about. It's been a long time since I've had pizza this good and the service was smooth. read more

I can't believe this is my first time trying the pizza. I'm a New Haven native and I've visited this plaza more than I can count. I don't know if I ever visited as a child, but I don't think so. I had a taste for pizza, but by the slice & since I was already in Hamden and learned that they have slices, I decided to give them a try. So happy I did. I love options. They have some great selections with meat, but I no longer eat meat so I opted for two cheese slices. It totaled to six dollars and change, and you need to spend $10 to use your debit card so I selected a veggie slice with spinach, roasted red peppers and eggplant. I was greeted immediately by a nice lady working behind the counter. She warmed up the selected slices, and I just observed the atmosphere. It's a cute spot, decent amount of seating. It looks like they offer espresso and wine. They also had packaged dessert items for your sweet tooth. They also have the pizza topping staples: red pepper flakes, Parmesan cheese, etc. The sauce is a little sweet, but I did enjoyed it. The veggie slice did not have red sauce, so if you enjoy spinach bread, you would probably enjoy that slice. It was a good experience. I found parking easily. It was nice and clean inside. When I want pizza by the slice, I will definitely keep them in mind. The slices are huge by the way. I could barely finish two. So happy to have the 3rd for leftovers. read more

I placed an order through doordash for dimatteos pizza because I had a craving for some good pizza. But that's where I fell short. The pizza was lacking in flavor the crust was very thick and seriously was not as delicious as I remembered growing up.. with all these great place places to have pizza in New Haven I don't know why I would ever order dematteo's again it was not good. read more

Poor customer service that's one woman behind the counter is very very very rude I've been eating there for over twenty some years and as the years went by it has went down hilll soooooo much it's goes from the service not wearing no gloves to serve the food it's just that one woman would ring the register and they have the nerve to touch the pizza but now days who really believes of wearing gloves I won't go there any more once was a fabulous restaurant to now done like it at alll.... read more

Used to go here a lot for their chicken and pasta dishes but today we wanted to try their pizza. We also got a couple of their potato croquettes. The croquettes were filled with mashed potatoes and diced ham. They were tasty, not too salty and made for a very nice appetizer. The pizza was very good. The crust, sauce and vegetables were all fresh and delicious. The cheese was also good, but somehow weighed heavily on my stomach and made me feel uncomfortable. I'm not going to condemn them for this, but if I want pizza from them again I'll ask for them to go light on the cheese. As far as their other dishes, my family and I have previously enjoyed their chicken Florentine and their pasta with garlic and oil. This place makes good quality food consistently and you can eat here with confidence. read more

We have gone to Di Matteo's for years. We had an unfortunate experience this evening. The pizza was not as good, it was chewy and there was far too much cheese. You would think that a lot of cheese would be great, but it was like rubber. Too much of a good thing isn't appropriate. This was definitely the case. We didn't say anything about the pizza because we were hungry and we got off to a bad start with the server who seemed to think she knew more than we did about glassware. She gave us beer glasses for our wine and when we asked her for wine glasses , she corrected us. "These are new wine glasses," she said. We pointed to the other glasses available in our view and she told us what they were for. For whatever reason, these new beer glasses were supposed to be what was served with white wine. We didn't pursue it further with her. Our stomaches were growling and expecting the pizza we always used to enjoy which turned out to be less than adequate. It was all very disappointing. I've been going to this place for many years, they're consistently good. The service is always great. The pizzas good... lets be honest, there's better pizza in New Haven, but it's still really good and Di Matteo's is worth going to for the service alone. When I lived there, by the end of it, I would not infrequently order an entire pizza from the restaurant, bring it home, and put the entire thing in my fridge immediately. As a warm pizza? From the outside it looks like your typical pizza joint located in a corner of a shopping plaza. Who would think the dinners would be so good! Omg I was surprised and had it not been for my aunt and uncle I would have never come here let alone order dinner rather than pizza. I can't tell you how much bill was for the 5 of us because my uncle paid but we all had some outstanding food. Don't judge from the outside - go in and order dinner. Calamari appetizer- light and tender all rings no tentacles. Some of the best I've ever had Broccoli Rabe and sausage app - very very good Pork chops with hot peppers and sauce- 2 huge thick cut pork chops, looked good. My uncle could only eat one pork chop and was full Rosemary chicken- my aunts favorite Chicken rippini (spelling?) three of us ordered this off the specials menu - Omg I could eat this everyday. Two large chicken cutlets breaded and fried and stuffed with ricotta and spinach and topped with a vodka sauce and crumbled sausage. Could only finish one. I have been going to this restaurant for over 30 years. They did a beautiful job on the remodel but unfortunately the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I ordered the cheese ravioli and was shocked to find a teaspoon of salt in each ravioli. I told the waitress and she said really? I then told the manager and he said oh yes we know. We purchase the ravioli and we told them it was too salty. Don't you think some kind of accommodation like telling the customer before they have the food would have been appropriate? He couldn't care less after I said the next time he should tell the customer. I hate to stop going to this restaurant but I'm seriously considering it. Really friendly staff but really terrible pizza. To start off, we waited probably close to an hour for just one large pie. Then we finally got our food and it was a half cheese half pepperoni and olive pizza that we ended up getting sick from. The pizza wasn't even worth the wait. The restaurant looks not very fancy but it is worth visiting here cause they afford bunch of great meals. I tried penne pasta with red clam sauce which gave me nice combination of garlic, tomato and chopped clam. Also, Manhattan style calamari is worthy trying! The portion is huge, which means I can share the dish with my friends and family members. The spiciness of the sauce was just perfect for me. I loved the texture of squid. The server was very nice and kind. We could feel that we are treated as valued customers. The music was not that bad but the light is a bit dark to take a great picture. This might be a reason that not many pictures have been uploaded for Di Matteo's Pizza. We will visit this place when we feel like having Italian food going forward. read more

Terribly overpriced. For 17 dollars, no salad comes with a chicken dish. This is a pizza joint, not a fancy Italian eatery. The owner needs to climb down from his high horse and serve what people want. I would drop $17 on dinner with a salad, no problem. Gouge me for an extra $2, I don't think so. read more

Walked into the restaurant after a long day and decided to give them a try. My waitress was very sweet and sat me right away. They seem to do takeout as well. The dining room is separated from the front where people seem to come in and out frequently for takeout orders. The menu has all the typical Italian dishes. I went with gnocchi and asked them to put it in their vodka sauce. It was a generous portion and I thought it was delicious. I tried the gelato for dessert and was also delicious. I came upon this place by chance. I live 45 minutes away, but by golly I would drive all that way to come back here again. The wait staff was very friendly, chill and great conversationalists - striking up a convo with my waitress was so easy and I enjoyed every minute of it. After some atrocious pizza misadventures, I found Di Matteo's.... The saving grace of pizza in Hamden. Di Matteo's is your standard, solid pizza place: thin crust, plenty of toppings, affordable. I frequent Di Matteo's and have yet to be disappointed. I have only taken out, but they updated their restaurant and take out portion of their space it's clean, spacious, and quiet! If you live in Hamden, and don't want to travel to surrounding towns for a decent pie, this is your place. The only downfall is that they don't deliver! If you're into standard NY style pizza, this will leave you with Di Matteo's magnetic business card stuck to your fridge. read more

I would have given more stars but, after weighing the quality and quantity of what I got versus the cost of my chicken parmigiana dinner, I am disappointed!! Two dinners, one side, and a couple rolls for $36!!! I probably wouldn't have minded if they gave more for my money but... This side options are pasta, potatoes, or salad... A few years ago Dimatteos was a serious contender for best Italian food in the area. They had a fire maybe 6 years ago and it really seems like their food has two periods, before the fire (amazing), and after the fire (horrific). My pictures speak a thousand words. It was 8pm on Saturday night and there were two tables of people 60 or older. Not one single pick up order came in the entire time we were there. There were four waitresses on, however no one was working. Literally someone from the kitchen walked our food out about 45 mins after we ordered. By the looks of it it took them that long to find it in the freezer and pop it in the microwave. Avoid, for great Italian food go to Amicis - around the corner, friendlier staff and the quality is in a league all its own. read more

I was raised in an Italian family in Jersey and I have to admit, this place is ace when it comes to good Italian food. I went to college in CT and suffice to say that the folks in New Haven take pizza seriously...not quite like New Yorkers but I digress. We got two pies, one regular plain and one with mushroom and sausage. In a word, WOW. The sauce was sweet but not thin. Sometimes the sweet sauces are watered down...not here. I'm not in the area all that often but I'll be looking forward to return trips :) read more

We got garlic bread which was okay but more crunch than bread. The pizza was fine, but the dough had all the wrong proportions and they used canned mushrooms.
