Large tomato & large meatball sausage and mushroom pie
Tim B.

Loved Ernie's and will return. Made a reservation, ordered ahead, had a couple beers while we waited for a large tomato pie and a large meatball sausage and mushroom pie. Waitress was super friendly and organized. Parking was good. Everything was clean and bright. Pizza was very good. Better than Modern in my opinion. It takes a long time for food to come out. They could probably use another over if they could make room for it but if you can plan ahead it's not too bad. I'm definitely returning. Wish we lived closer so we could make this our takeout spot!

My favorite Apizza spot! The service, atmosphere, and pizza was phenomenal! Everyone was friendly and I will definitely be back for more. If you're looking for great pizza to get the experience of what New Haven Apizza is about, go to Ernie's!

Another trip with Cuzin Robby! We should take stock in this place. Our two favorite waitresses, excellent!! Pat scores another 9.9!!!

We ordered a meatball and an Ernie's Special. Both pizzas were excellent. We went early and got a table, no wait. Personally, we prefer a pizza that hasn't been inside a box, especially if we're trying it for the first time. There's an old school vibe about the place. The server was super friendly and accommodating. Well worth a visit.

We had never tried Ernie's pizza. It's been recommended many times and now on the top 20 list, we took a ride. The staff is great, welcoming and friendly. Being a Friday evening, it didn't seem very busy. We were the first sitting inside at 4:30. A few came in for take out. We ordered 2 small pizzas, a pepperoni and a half meatball. We were given paper plates and plastic utensils. We waited about over a half an hour for the pizzas. They didn't have pizza stands, so 2 pizzas crowded the table. The waitress did her best to position them so we wouldn't bump them. The crust is very thin and was very crisp when it was hot. It got a bit soggy once it cooled. The cheese slide off and they seemed a bit greasy. My husband really liked the pepperoni. It was very flavorful! However, the other pizza was bland. We decided it was the cheese. It seemed to have little flavor and the pepperoni, having a strong flavor, overpowered it. The meatball was tasty but still was missing something. We added parmesan, we was brought over in a to-go cup. I eventually added a little salt, from a packet. Overall, the pizza wasn't bad. We felt that they are skimping to save money....using a less expensive mozzarella(less tasty and greasy), to go containers instead of shakers on the tables, plastic utensils (which the waitress had customers hold onto after eating salad rather than getting clean ones.) The inside is bright and clean. If we lived close by we might have tried again. It's not worth the treck across New Haven. I was really hopeful.

1/2 Cheese, 1/2 Sauseege!!

First of all: Foxon Park on tap! IYKYK. You walk ind and it's like going back in time. The waiters are friendly and attentive. The pizza was phenomenal, a crispy easy to bite crust with beautiful sauce. Definitely coming back here soon.

I've seen so many positive reviews, so I had to give Ernie's a try. Bottom line, it's fine, not great...and I think maybe more of a nostalgic feel for people who have been eating there for years. The first time we went, I had recently had covid, so I thought maybe that was the reason I found the fresh tomato pie to be completely bland and lacking flavor. Though taste aside, I found the crust to be thicker than average and more cheese than I'm accustomed to. When my husband suggested going back, I agreed as I truly hoped it would wow me this time. However, still just average. Pizzas take forever to make, even when there's only 5-6 occupied tables. Bacon on our pie was a little undercooked for my liking. And in spite of adding garlic, it was still fairly bland. The Eco-Friendly side of me also despises restaurants that use disposable products. Throw away cups, plates, and utensils. Cheese and red pepper in throw away containers. I feel like they could do better in this day and age. I'd rather have a soda in a glass bottle than a plastic cup, at least it would be recyclable. I'm not saying stay away from this place. I'd eat there if friends really wanted to go. But for me, it's not worth the trip, and there are so many pizza places in the area that I like a lot more.

Finishing with a flourish, Ernie's definitely hits the spot in case you need some good pizza without going to any of the tourist traps on Wooster Street. The pies take a bit longer than usual to cook here and that is fine. It tastes delicious, but incredibly hot. Give it 5-10 minutes before eating or you will burn the roof of your mouth. I would also suggest getting a half mozzarella half topping pie. This will allow your palette to adjust to the flavors without compromising taste. The white clam pie does that well. It is a solid walk from downtown New Haven but only about a 10 minute drive for those who have a car. I recommend wholly.

Recently had a chance to try Ernie's as it was my fiancés birthday meal choice. We went around 3:30-4pm and it was pretty hopping at that time! Staff were so great and friendly! My fiance got his usual boring plain cheese and I got half meatball half eggplant. Let me tell you the hype on the meatballs is real. These probably some of the best meatballs I've ever had.!!! So good. Eggplant was thin and yummy! Good sauce m, generous toppings and plenty of cheese. The only thing I didn't like much was the crust. Super dry and almost like a cracker. Not my style but my fiance loves everything about this place!!

You can definitely tell this place is old school with a touch of modernity The walls are full of pictures of the past eaters and the history of Sally's pizza. Would recommend going on an early dinner weeknight! They don't see pizza by the slices so definitely bring friends to share it with or have leftovers :)

We get it - long lines create the illusion of demand, which then creates the feeling of novelty,…read moreuniqueness, value. That was what I thought about Sally's. Well the reputation of Sally's initially came from recommendations from acquaintances and uber driver. So I figured: Sally's must truly be the best pizza in New Haven the pizzz capital of USA (well that's what the signage at New Haven Tweed airport says!) So on a Monday mid-afternoon (July 13 2026) I made sure I put my Teams offline and drove to New Haven from Milford. Traffic on 95 but that's I guess typical. This doesn't happen in VA Beach where am visiting from; but not a novice in dealing with I-95 traffic since I've lived in Northern VA for 36 years. Anyway why am I describing all this? Is Sally's truly worth the hype, long lines and oh btw for pickup/delivery you get in line to order, and have to come back 45 minutes to pick up your order!?? The notable thing is that service is a 4 for takeout. You have to wait a few minutes for the staff who takes orders to be at his station to take the order. He disappears for minutes. But ordering was quick and when they tell you ready gif pickup by 4:15pm, it was ready (but of course got to get in line for that too!) The answer is: only if you don't want to drive to NY to get really great pizza. I ordered the garden (signature) pizza. It looked like a garden alright: vibrant green not overload of red pizza sauce or overly sprinkled cheese. The crust was pretty thin (way I like it) but not as thin as real pizza in Italy. The toppings were fresh. But it was on the bland unseasoned side. I'd give the pizza a 3.

We arrived on a Monday around peak dinner time, but there was essentially no wait (apparently uncommon according to my friend -- just a delightful consequence of dining at a college town during the summer). We split a medium pizza (1/2 elote mexican street corn and 1/2 bbq brisket), proving to be more than enough for two plus a more than ample amount of leftovers. Recently, I've gravitated toward thinner pizzas, a far cry from the typical Detroit (foccacia-esque) style pizzas I used to prefer, and BAR's pizza is akin to a flatbread yet very thin, another fallen angel to the GLP's. The undercarriage boasts a brilliant crust, almost cracker-like. However, it should be noted that the pizza is indulgent all the same. The elote pizza is quite possibly the most memorable, unique pizza I've ever had; it arrives almost crimson-red with a generous layer of corn and takis atop. It's still incredibly well balanced despite the hodgepodge of varied toppings. It's hard to pick a favorite between this and the bbq brisket though; while one is incredibly unique the other is simply sumptuous, nothing pedestrian about either of the two. The service is also impeccable, almost rivaling that of southern hospitality. I always thought Californians were friendly but something is in the air every time I visit New Haven. Incredible!

Also, the cheese was perfect with just the right amount of grease. Finally, the sauce had a savory tomato flavor which was excellent. I just wish they put more on the pizza. In similar fashion, the spicy shrimp pizza was very good as well. To breakdown, the shrimp tasted fresh and had great flavor. My only complaint was that the pizza was a little too spicy for my taste. Walk in and you immediately catch the vibe, exposed brick, distressed plaster, a slightly industrial, almost factory-style feel that somehow still feels warm and welcoming. The centerpiece of the room is the wood-fired oven, running hot and glowing with that perfect orange flame. The aroma of burning wood hits you right away and sets the tone. From that moment on, the culinary experience is in motion. We ordered The Mootz and Breaking My Meatballs. Both pies are built on a very thin, tender crust with beautiful leoparding. The dough is flavorful and clearly well-fermented. Sauce is applied with restraint, just enough to support the dough and cheese without overpowering them, and it delivers a clean, bright tomato flavor. Breaking My Meatballs was the standout. Homemade meatballs, herbed ricotta, cherry peppers, mozzarella, and that same balanced sauce. The cherry peppers bring a sharp vinegar tang that cuts perfectly through the richness of the ricotta and meatballs. Every bite hits a different note, and it all works together. Easily one of my favorites. The crust across the board was thin and tender with a delicate smoky char from the wood fire, exactly what you want from this style. Bottom line: Great spot. Kwok has more than 20 years experience in the hospitality industry. Some of the other restaurants he has opened include Sweet Basil in Fairfield, Pink Sumo Sushi & Sake Cafe in Westport, and Eat Noodle in Bridgeport. Kwok and Nguyen's latest venture opened at the Connecticut Post Mall in a restaurant space that was previously home to Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar, which specialized in tavern-style pizzas cooked in a cast-iron skillet. 8 Thousand Pizza offers this same style of pizza, but what sets them apart from the previous pizzeria is that they also offer self-pouring technology, which became legalized in Connecticut in 2021. The food menu features two dozen tavern-style pizzas as well as burgers, wings, fries, salads and soups. Through the use of a supplied electronic bracelet, customers can self-pour their own beverage from a selection of 28 craft beer taps and 6 wine taps. There's a two-pint or 32-ounce limit for the self-pours. I recently visited 8 Thousand Pizza for dinner. I had previously visited the space when it was Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar and was sad to hear that they moved. However, this new business concept of a tavern-style pizzeria with self-pouring taps sounded very interesting to me. This was actually my first visit to a self-pouring taproom, as these types of establishments only just began opening in the state in the last few years. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the "Grandma's Tomato Pizza" (fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, roasted garlic, tomatoes and EVOO) and the "Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza" (tomato sauce, pepperoni, hot honey sauce and mozzarella cheese). The latter happens to be 8 Thousand's signature pizza. Both pizzas had crust so thin that it's almost cracker like; they didn't flop at all. They were super crispy with excellent sauce and toppings. I honestly can't decide which one I liked better; they were both very good. During my visit, I enjoyed some self-pours of Grey Sail Brewing's "Captain's Daughter" (Double New England IPA) and New Park Brewing's "Cloudscape" (American IPA). Delicious pizza with craft beer is always an excellent pairing! I had a really nice experience at 8 Thousand Pizza and I hope to return with my family.

Mediterranean is not my jive but it seemed like a good spot for a date night. Seemed. We were seated quickly, which was nice. It wasn't what I'd consider busy, but apparently it was busy for them on this particular night of service. Took about 15min from the time we were seated to have our order taken. Better half says it is usually more calming and intimate. Tonight absolutely was not that. It gives... Starbucks, if it served Mediterranean food... like, no coffee. With teacup candles. Real ones. (fire code???) I ordered the wings, with low expectations. Anyone that knows me and my heart also knows how I feel about a good wing. These wings were not that. They came out looking exactly how I anticipated them to based on what I saw in previous reviews (and the item description, which, shockingly, was painfully accurate) -- sad, and beige. First bite revealed various shades of pink, although the skin was seasoned nicely. I'm partial against this style of chicken wing so its hard for me to give it any credit... moving on. I also had the chicken kebab sandwich... which isn't really a sandwich. Its more of a ... gyro? I liked it. The chicken in the sandwich was really nice. Cooked well, definitely cooked better than the wings. Wish the cuts/pieces were smaller though. It was nice and hot, but also kind of wet, I guess from steam? It came wrapped in sort of a parchment paper, that was also wet. And the closer I got to the end, the more liquid dripped out from the bottom. Water mixed with tomato, other spices and whatnot... it wasn't pretty. I got less and less interested as I made progress. Better half got the Merguez Kebab Sandwich/gyro thing. Similar to my Chicken Kebab, the cuts of meat were huge however it was just hard to come to terms with the notion that they were each fully cooked through, and it was also... wet. More wet than my Chicken Kebab. She didn't finish it, and I don't blame her. The hummus was nice. The pita was hot and fresh. You could see some of the char from the skillet it was made in, which was nice. Unfortunate that either are individual at-cost appetizers (although looking at my receipt, I can infer that the first pita was included with the hummus as I was only charged for one and we had two). I don't think I will be returning there on my own volition. Maybe tonight was a bad night, and that happens sometimes. The staff were certainly nice, and considering it was a Saturday evening, the volume of patrons is worth appreciation. It wasn't rowdy, the music was nice, the ceiling fan blades passing over one of the ceiling lights drove me crazy a little bit, but it is a nice place. I'm just a little let down that this was how my Saturday night dinner went. I'm still hungry, dawg. There was also a woman in scrubs(?) or some sort of inpatient-wear that walked past the restaurant outside, locked eyes with the folks at a table, smiled and waved, and slowly meandered away until she came back to walk in the other direction. Not sure what that was about, but its typical New Haven shit. Stranger things have happened, lol! TLDR if you're not super picky/sensitive about your food and you're a big (gotta be big) fan of Mediterranean Fusion food, I absolutely recommend RAWA. Otherwise... hard pass -- for me, at least. Respectfully.
