Our fourth time passing through New Haven and the debate for best pizza in New Haven still rages on. This is a smaller space compared to the more popular places and no wait for a weekday lunch. The space is adorable, especially the outdoor area, more of a traditional pizzeria feel. We tried the King Pie, White Clam, wings and pig candy. First thing first, the clam pizza was good, but Pepe's was better. I really liked the King Pie, not sure if it's everyone's cup of tea with peanut butter, I thought it was really good (like a warm PB & J). The wings were well season and tender. The pig candy was definitely a big hit. Would love to come back and try more pies.

My husband and I have been looking for some good pizza for a while now. We've tried a few of the "popular" pizzerias but have been far from impressed. We ordered 2 pizzas. 1 large half cheese half pepperoni and fresh garlic and 1 medium Breaking my meatballs. Not only was the pizza amazing. Hot, fresh, tasty, but the service was just as amazing. It was extremely busy so our pizzas weren't done when we were told they would be, but we'd order and wait over and over. Definitely our new favorite spot. My husband loved the atmosphere and coziness of the pizzeria and we can't wait to go back for date night! Thank you 163!!

Just awesome. Pizza was outstanding. Great service. Good vibe. I ordered extra cheese not sure I needed it. This shop was off the main roads and worth the trip.

In a town with way too many amazing pizza options, one six three is towards the top of my list. They have so many fun, thoughtful pies, and the pizza itself is so well-executed. I have almost always done takeout and recently dined in for the first time. What a great experience! It's a small restaurant but the vibe is super warm and welcoming. They also let you BYOB so we enjoyed our pizza over a bottle of wine, making for a super lovely evening.

One 6 Three is a New Haven-style pizzeria that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in February 2016. It was founded by Andrew Holmes and his girlfriend Alexa Flagge (with the help of her parents Jack & Janet). Holmes began his journey in the pizza-making business when he started working at a Seymour pizzeria owned by two Albanian immigrants. He worked his way up from cleaning to cooking and eventually took jobs at other restaurants. Holmes then found himself working for Jack & Janet Flagge, owners of the Old World Pizza Truck. In the catering business since 1980, the Flagges started their pizza truck business in 2007. Holmes began dating the Flagges' daughter Alexa, and the couple soon had a dream to open their own pizzeria. They found a location at 163 Foster Street, in New Haven's East Rock neighborhood, that had previously been home to Angelo's Pizza. Holmes knocked down the wall that hid the kitchen in order to help his new pizzeria build connections between the workers and customers. In addition to pizza, the menu also offers sandwiches, wings, meatballs, fries, mac & cheese, salads, and more. My two sons and I recently visited One 6 Three for lunch. We had been cycling around New Haven and were in the mood for some pizza. One 6 Three has been on my radar for a while. It's part of a growing number of pizzerias located in the Goatville section of East Rock. After locking up my bicycle outside, we headed inside and grabbed a table. My sons and I really enjoyed the open kitchen set-up; we love watching people cook. After looking over the menu, we decided to order and share "The Mootz" (hand-crushed tomato sauce & mozzarella) with half pepperoni, "Potato Head" (a thin layer of our mashed potatoes as the base, sautéed onions, smoked bacon, four cheeses & a sprinkle of scallions), and "Grandma's" (hand-crushed tomato sauce, fresh garlic, fresh basil & grated pecorino romano cheese). Great sauce, crust and toppings! I would say that these pies are sort of a hybrid between classic New Haven-style pizza and tavern-style pizza. Our favorite was probably "Grandma's". We all give One 6 Three our seal of approval!

I really enjoyed this pizza! I got a personal size Grandma's pie no fresh garlic, light baked. The crust was nice and crispy without being too charred. Reasonably priced, too. I would def return to try their other pies.

    White clam pizza

I had the white clam pizza last night, and it was the most delicious pizza I've ever had! I wasn't planning on eating the entire 12 inch pizza by myself, but it was too good to resist! I look forward to having it again.

My husband and I called in our order for pick up tonight. It was our first time trying One 6 Three after hearing good things from friends. We ordered the Potato Head Pie and the Chicken Parm sandwich. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes which is fast! The food was good and the individuals who work there are nice. It was a good experience and we will be returning again.

4.5 stars. I came here on a Friday afternoon and there wasn't too many people at the time. This spot is relatively close to the Yale campus so it was a pretty convenient spot to hit up after my brother was done with all of his meetings. They offer a variety of pretty cool pizzas, with different varieties of topping combinations. I wish I had the stomach space to try all of them. The pizzas were made very well and it was extremely satisfying to eat. The flavor of the toppings, sauce, cheese, and crust were well balanced and the portion size was pretty solid. My party had a total of three people and we ordered two pizzas and a side of fries. We were unable to finish, I think we ordered enough for four people. For their fries, they have a variety of sauces to select from and I believe you get three choices. Our server was very friendly and it was overall just a great vibe.

    Sweet and Salami

Came to New Haven for a weekend biking and pizza trip. After seeing the crowds at Pepe's, Modern and Sally's, we went to the fourth joint on our list, One6three. No crowds outside but busy inside. Able to order quickly and the weather permitted us to sit outside. (Limited indoor seating) Got the Sweet and Salami as was an online recommendation. It was an outstanding blend of flavors on a great pizza. Service was friendly and very accommodating. Couple next to us had the King which they were very happy with. Great menu with some non traditional choices. Absolutely enjoyed this small scale operation and recommend it highly.

My daughter and I decided to come here for dinner and I'm glad we did. When we arrived there was no seating inside so we dined outside because there was no more seating inside. Which was fine because it was beautiful evening. We ordered a large half Pepperoni and Cheese pizza and Cheese Curds. The Cheese Curds were delicious. They we're crispy, flavorful, and the dipping sauce was just the right touch to bring that flavorful profile up. It seem like the Cheese Curds had a garlic bread breading which was very innovative. The pizza was delicious as my daughter and I only left two slices to bring home. The pizza was a nice size pizza and I'm glad we ordered a large pizza. The pizza was crispy and had that crunch factor which I love. The pepperoni on top of the pizza was like bacon. I think was my favorite part of pizza. The sauce was awesome as it was also flavorful and brought the whole pizza together. The customer service was great and the staff we're so kind because as we're sitting outside, we had a couple of bee's swarm are pizza. We were fighting them off but two staff employees came outside and helped pick up are things to escort us inside as seating became available. The staff are so gracious and the kids and I will definitely be back.

The King Pie and The A&A Pie. We also got the hush puppies...worth it

As a CT native who now lives out of state, I hadn't even been to Sally's or the other since I was probably a teenager. My dad has always gone on saying how Sally's is his number one, and now I finally see why. It has a more rustic, home cooked quality to it. And let's be real, all of the pizza on this street is delicious, so I really don't want to compare too much. After waiting in line for an hour, we cooled inside with some crisp Foxon Park Birch Beer and a fresh Caesar salad hit the spot. I don't usually bother with salad when I'm visiting home & getting my pizza fix, but I would absolutely order this salad again! It was a perfect Caesar. For pizzas, we opted to get the classic New England clam pizza, and it ended up being a favorite of my CA boyfriend as well. We also ordered a sausage, onion, & cherry pepper (the cherry peppers were HOT), and of course we had to get a classic pepperoni. It was a perfect meal, in a nice, cozy old school spot, that I'll definitely be craving until I'm back in town. Yes, it was worth the wait in line.

We arrived on a Monday around peak dinner time, but there was essentially no wait (apparently uncommon according to my friend -- just a delightful consequence of dining at a college town during the summer). We split a medium pizza (1/2 elote mexican street corn and 1/2 bbq brisket), proving to be more than enough for two plus a more than ample amount of leftovers. Recently, I've gravitated toward thinner pizzas, a far cry from the typical Detroit (foccacia-esque) style pizzas I used to prefer, and BAR's pizza is akin to a flatbread yet very thin, another fallen angel to the GLP's. The undercarriage boasts a brilliant crust, almost cracker-like. However, it should be noted that the pizza is indulgent all the same. The elote pizza is quite possibly the most memorable, unique pizza I've ever had; it arrives almost crimson-red with a generous layer of corn and takis atop. It's still incredibly well balanced despite the hodgepodge of varied toppings. It's hard to pick a favorite between this and the bbq brisket though; while one is incredibly unique the other is simply sumptuous, nothing pedestrian about either of the two. The service is also impeccable, almost rivaling that of southern hospitality. I always thought Californians were friendly but something is in the air every time I visit New Haven. Incredible!

Kwok has more than 20 years experience in the hospitality industry. Some of the other restaurants he has opened include Sweet Basil in Fairfield, Pink Sumo Sushi & Sake Cafe in Westport, and Eat Noodle in Bridgeport. Kwok and Nguyen's latest venture opened at the Connecticut Post Mall in a restaurant space that was previously home to Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar, which specialized in tavern-style pizzas cooked in a cast-iron skillet. 8 Thousand Pizza offers this same style of pizza, but what sets them apart from the previous pizzeria is that they also offer self-pouring technology, which became legalized in Connecticut in 2021. The food menu features two dozen tavern-style pizzas as well as burgers, wings, fries, salads and soups. Through the use of a supplied electronic bracelet, customers can self-pour their own beverage from a selection of 28 craft beer taps and 6 wine taps. There's a two-pint or 32-ounce limit for the self-pours. I recently visited 8 Thousand Pizza for dinner. I had previously visited the space when it was Cast Iron Chef Kitchen & Bar and was sad to hear that they moved. However, this new business concept of a tavern-style pizzeria with self-pouring taps sounded very interesting to me. This was actually my first visit to a self-pouring taproom, as these types of establishments only just began opening in the state in the last few years. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the "Grandma's Tomato Pizza" (fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, roasted garlic, tomatoes and EVOO) and the "Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza" (tomato sauce, pepperoni, hot honey sauce and mozzarella cheese). The latter happens to be 8 Thousand's signature pizza. Both pizzas had crust so thin that it's almost cracker like; they didn't flop at all. They were super crispy with excellent sauce and toppings. I honestly can't decide which one I liked better; they were both very good. During my visit, I enjoyed some self-pours of Grey Sail Brewing's "Captain's Daughter" (Double New England IPA) and New Park Brewing's "Cloudscape" (American IPA). Delicious pizza with craft beer is always an excellent pairing! I had a really nice experience at 8 Thousand Pizza and I hope to return with my family.

Mediterranean is not my jive but it seemed like a good spot for a date night. Seemed. We were seated quickly, which was nice. It wasn't what I'd consider busy, but apparently it was busy for them on this particular night of service. Took about 15min from the time we were seated to have our order taken. Better half says it is usually more calming and intimate. Tonight absolutely was not that. It gives... Starbucks, if it served Mediterranean food... like, no coffee. With teacup candles. Real ones. (fire code???) I ordered the wings, with low expectations. Anyone that knows me and my heart also knows how I feel about a good wing. These wings were not that. They came out looking exactly how I anticipated them to based on what I saw in previous reviews (and the item description, which, shockingly, was painfully accurate) -- sad, and beige. First bite revealed various shades of pink, although the skin was seasoned nicely. I'm partial against this style of chicken wing so its hard for me to give it any credit... moving on. I also had the chicken kebab sandwich... which isn't really a sandwich. Its more of a ... gyro? I liked it. The chicken in the sandwich was really nice. Cooked well, definitely cooked better than the wings. Wish the cuts/pieces were smaller though. It was nice and hot, but also kind of wet, I guess from steam? It came wrapped in sort of a parchment paper, that was also wet. And the closer I got to the end, the more liquid dripped out from the bottom. Water mixed with tomato, other spices and whatnot... it wasn't pretty. I got less and less interested as I made progress. Better half got the Merguez Kebab Sandwich/gyro thing. Similar to my Chicken Kebab, the cuts of meat were huge however it was just hard to come to terms with the notion that they were each fully cooked through, and it was also... wet. More wet than my Chicken Kebab. She didn't finish it, and I don't blame her. The hummus was nice. The pita was hot and fresh. You could see some of the char from the skillet it was made in, which was nice. Unfortunate that either are individual at-cost appetizers (although looking at my receipt, I can infer that the first pita was included with the hummus as I was only charged for one and we had two). I don't think I will be returning there on my own volition. Maybe tonight was a bad night, and that happens sometimes. The staff were certainly nice, and considering it was a Saturday evening, the volume of patrons is worth appreciation. It wasn't rowdy, the music was nice, the ceiling fan blades passing over one of the ceiling lights drove me crazy a little bit, but it is a nice place. I'm just a little let down that this was how my Saturday night dinner went. I'm still hungry, dawg. There was also a woman in scrubs(?) or some sort of inpatient-wear that walked past the restaurant outside, locked eyes with the folks at a table, smiled and waved, and slowly meandered away until she came back to walk in the other direction. Not sure what that was about, but its typical New Haven shit. Stranger things have happened, lol! TLDR if you're not super picky/sensitive about your food and you're a big (gotta be big) fan of Mediterranean Fusion food, I absolutely recommend RAWA. Otherwise... hard pass -- for me, at least. Respectfully.
