This place is absolutely the best if you are looking for an old school steak house. This restaurant is upscale without being pretentious. This place is great. It's an unassuming straight forward Midwestern steakhouse. The atmosphere is very pleasant but dated, but so what. That's part of its soul. My husband had the rib eye and was very pleased. I opted for the garlic chicken breast, also very good. The sauce was unbelievable and served as a good sauce for my husband's fries! Food is good. But it almost doesn't matter because everything else about the place is horrible. Very very slow service. Waitresses are clueless, we walk in with nobody to seat us. Then when they noticed and gave us a table, we were sitting without drinks or menus for 20 minutes. Finally we just asked for menus. Then they never check up on you and won't bring the bill when they clearly see your plates are empty. They need to be constantly reminded of how to take care of guests. During our meal the waitresses were talking about drama right by us and gossiping about other staff members. Very unprofessional. The food is good, but I won't be returning due to the poor service. Went with friends for NewYears eve dinner. The bartender and who I believe is the owner did not make us feel welcome. The servers made a god recovery and did a good job. The food was a mixed bag. My large strip steak was perfect, the baked potato was overlooked and dry. The side of mushrooms was like they opened a can of mushrooms heated in butter. The grilled peppers we pickled and for my taste buds sour. The steak was $44. Had the accompanying sides been as good as the steak, they would have earned 4 stars. Went last night and for the prices of the meals and being a white table cloth restaraunt, we were not greeted when we entered and stood there waiting to figure out where the rest of our party was. It is no surprise business is down at this historical establishment in Akron, especially considering the manner in which I was greeted upon entering. I have never felt more unwelcome or insulted in any restaurant in my entire life. With a heartless, dusty old fart greeting me as if I was some kind of parasite, clearly management is behind the times and the changes undergoing the service industry these days. Horrible experience! The bread was served wrapped up and cold. Waitress paid us very little attention, never introduced herself and offered us no drinks Til after our salads had already come... The scallops were okay. Other than that the steaks were served at a temperature barely warmer than the dry room we sat in! The tables were super small and left us very little room to eat let alone set all of our plates! The waitress also took it upon herself to combine two of the guests plates French fries on one plate as to accommodate all but conserve space all at the same time! I was extremely unhappy with the service, the meals are about twice the price they should be and the salad came out as a chunk of an iceberg while we were served cans of pop and a glass of ice to go alongside. At the end of this nightmare we could barely stand to sit through and many times throughout contemplated walking out, we were still charged for the chicken dinner that my sister-in-law was forced to choose out of a lack of other options and only ate one bite of and then had it removed from our table! With all due respect To the waitresses she may not have even noticed the chicken wasn't eaten because she paid us that little of attn! After speaking to what appeared to be the manager/owner? We had the horrible chicken meal removed and I still left an undeserved tip of 10 dollars and some change on an over 150$ meal! Save yourself hundreds of dollars and go to a steakhouse chain. The steaks are in no way prime. Ordered my med. rare came out med. well and burnt on one end. Onion rings came out burnt to almost black. Onion soup didn't have any onions. Walleye was 3 pieces 2" long, not kidding for $15 app. Mushrooms were canned. Fries were a small handful of shoestring at least they weren't burnt. A table of about 20 was seated next to us after arriving wasn't able to carry a conversation at our table due to noise. Totally disappointed and will never go back. I took my mother to the Diamond Grill for her birthday, because we read that their steaks were voted the best in town. The salad was swimming in Italian dressing, so much so that I couldn't finish it. The broccoli was severely over cooked and the fillet mignon basically didn't taste like anything. It was huge, but tasteless. But, I didn't complain. I tried to smile and make the best of it, because it was my mother's birthday. She didn't complain either. Then when I tried to pay with a credit card at the END OF THE MEAL, I was told they don't take credit cards. I, like most people don't carry a lot of cash. There were only 3 persons at 1 table in the restaurant/bar.The owner of the phone called Michael's chambers & left a message with her baliff that Uncorked [our original meeting spot] was having a private party at 6 pm. i never intended to come to the Diamond Grille. I was getting my car fixed up at Amers Marathon. I was due to meet my friend Judge Kathryn Michael & drink champagne to celebrate her birthday. I ordered a $32 bottle of Chandon. Waitress took care of me. I painted my fingernails & she told me to NEVER do that here again because of the smell. OPI I told her doesn't contain preservatives, additives. then a man & his twin bro & his sis-in-law came in for an early dinner. I recognized him & approached their table & said hello trying to figure out how we knew each other. I went back to the bar. larry saw me get up again after I wrote down on the napkin trying to figure out I how knew Dave Thomas & it came to me how & where I knew him from. Larry shook his head & said "don't go over there." I ignored him & I approached their table, gave me the napkin with the writing on it & then told him now I knew who he was. & he remembered me. What right does your bartender have to tell me that I cannot converse with a fellow patron? Where does the waitress get off telling me what I can & cannot do on the bar stool. I expect that the owner will reprimand the two employees. I also expect to receive some compensation. I spent $32 for the bottle of champagne & $6 tip. the young waitress that started her shift, Megan, was a gem & helped me located the phone number for the service station by searching on her phone. the waitress from earlier called 411 & got the wrong # & told me just do it yourself. Worst restaurant service I have ever seen in my life. It's my moms birthday and we decide to get her the most expensive meal in akron. We were a party of 5 and there were under 5 other tables that had at most 4 people seated. an hour after we ordered it we finally got our appetizers and drinks. We then wait about 20 more mins for the waitress to come back and take our order. At this point were we being completely cooperative and understanding. 2 hours go by and we still haven't gotten our food, so we tell the waitress "hey we are not blaming you but we would like to take this to go because this is ridiculous and it's taking forever" she gives us a rude remark and goes bitching to nick thomas (owner) about us. I was there with my dad who personally has known him since high school, And he says absolutely nothing to us like a coward. At least 15-20 mins go by and we decide to just leave, we ask for the bill and they have the nerve to give us a $304.00 bill and we received about 1/5 of that price. so we give the owner 60$ which was calculated 10$ more than what we were actually given (2 15.00$ appetizers plus drinks) and we still get rude bitchy remarks like it was our fault. That place is so fucking overpriced it's unbelievable, it isn't good at all and they don't even have mashed potatoes. And the beer I got was expired. We can simply say We are never going there ever again, and my dad has been going there for 30 years. And I hope they read this review because I know they remember it, or atleast nick thomas(owner) remembers how embarrassed he was in front of 20+ people for the scene I made. this is as old school as you will get in northern ohio, the entire part of my dads family are life long residents of akron and this is an institution. I have been there about 5 times and most recently at the tender age of 22 i was the youngest person in there by 30 years the next oldest being my parents. But that is what is cool about this place it has been unchanged by time. the food is straightforward and on par, one of the best steaks you will have, seriously its an old school steakhouse the way it should be and i love it for it. cash only. you would prob drive by it hundreds of time and think it looks like a run down strip club but little do you know what hides behind. Okay, first this place is expensive which would be okay if the food, service, and decor justified the prices. I ordered a shrimp salad for $15 dollars, the salad was basically a pile of iceburg lettuce with 4 cold jumbo shrimp no sauce or butter. There was a hole in the wall on the walk to the restroom, and to top it off, when we went to pay they told us they only accept cash or check. Now, this fact was not posted anywhere, when I told the waitress this was distressing since I thought anyplace where the entrees average $27, I would be able to pay with my virtual cash (debit card) or credit card. She said, "well we have been here so long everyone just knows". Here is a wake up call, not everyone is born in Akron, lives and eventually dies here." It might do this place some good to shrug off the provincial attitude and take some tips from their more cosmopolitan brethren. The Diamond Grille is one of my favorite steakhouses in the country. Yes I'm from Akron so I'm partial. The atmosphere looks like 1970. It's dimly lit, dark, no frills. If you want frills...go somewhere else. The owners Teddy and Nick aren't the most friendly in the world. You walk in, give them your name, they seat you. Period. Again no frills. The wait staff has always been very friendly and attentive. Folks this is a steakhouse. If you are a vegan I'd suggest going elsewhere. You come here for steaks or seafood. In the probably 40+ times I've been there I've ordered the filet nearly everytime. I've had the Tuna steak a few times. Both are DELICIOUS! Always cooked medium rare and full of flavor. You can tell it is a great cut of meat. Sides are always fine...baked potato or homefries. Salad dressing is very good italian (house.) When I read reviews about it being dimly lit, hard to see, all they have is steak, etc. that is what you go there for. You want fancy and foo-foo...go somewhere else. read more

I wish I could give negative stars to this restaurant! Steaks were not cooked to the proper temperature. My girlfriend's was overcooked, mine undercooked. The owner sits drinking at the bar. They don't accept credit cards, which is not posted on the menu and we weren't made aware of until after we ordered drinks. I had to leave my girlfriend there to run to an ATM, because who carries cash anymore? While I was gone my girlfriend had to sit by herself while bar patrons told jokes dealing with subject matter like rape and other misogynistic topics. All this while the owner was sitting at the same bar drinking! After the meal I asked to speak to the owner, Ted. He was dismissive and obviously didn't care about anything I had to say. My boyfriend and I had dinner here this week. I was happy that when I called for reservations they were able to seat us within the hour. I was somewhat disappointed in the simplicity of the menu. A surf and turf would have been nice. We were told that you would have to order two dinners to get that. The rice that my scallops were paired with was a sad presentation. Ick! The scallops however were wonderful. My boyfriend decided on lamb chops. They were terribly rare when he had ordered medium. The salad was fresh but the dressing choices are limited. We felt the food was overpriced. Our server was good, no frills through. The back dining room filled quickly making it loud and uncomfortable when you are expecting a quiet dinner for two. The dessert menu consists of ice cream or ice cream. That's it! Oh yeah, when we arrived, we entered at the front of the building and they way we were looked at upon arriving, we were left feeling that we perhaps entered at the wrong door. There was no friendly greeting. We walked to the end of the bar and gave our name to be seated and was simply given a "Oh Yeah...wait a minute, Nick is in the back" When "Nick" arrived, he just gave a hand gesture motioning us to follow, we entered the back dining room where he simply pointed to the table and said "there". Not what I expected for these prices. Two meals (scallops and lamb chops, two glasses of house wine and a dish of mocha ice cream $80.00) Interesting and old school for sure.
