It kills me to have to write a bad review of this dentistry office because I have been a patient here for TWENTY years, since 1997!! Way before Dr. Applegate. Their hygienists have always been super. However, since Dr. Applegate bought the place, I've had problem after problem with them. It boils down to this= they push you to do procedures that I don't feel are necessary but are clearly big moneymakers for them. For example, I don't want fluoride anymore, as I am 44 and my insurance doesn't cover it anyway. In the chair, they'll tell you that they will offer fluoride free of charge if your insurance won't cover it, yet the bill always comes, and when I call to complain, you can't get out of it. Worst is the X-ray scam, (which I think a lot of dentists are in on, because so many are owned by big conglomerates and have quotas to meet I guess to pay for their X-ray machines?? Not sure.). Anyway, it's my body, my health, and I have explained repeatedly that I don't want unnecessary X-rays when I am not having any problems with my teeth! Again, on the phone, when I last called to make my 6 month appointment, I went over that again= no X-rays. But you get in the chair, and the fight begins. You are told these are bite wings, or it's been two years, or (and this HAS to be a lie) that there is a state law that one get X-rays????? I was actually told this today!!! I asked if I could talk to Dr. Applegate in person, and she basically HID from me and refused to talk to me. If that is a state law, I would love to see it, and I will change my review. But that was the last straw. Today I left the office without my cleaning, and will look for a new dentist. read more

My family has been going to the same location for dental work for 12 years. When our previous dentist retired and Dr. Applegate took over, we were pleased to receive the same great, professional service we had received in the past. The front desk staff are welcoming, friendly and organized. They seem to enjoy their job and checking in with returning clients. My kids look forward to going to the dentist because they have been treated so well and enjoy the special prize at the end of their visit.I never thought I would say this, but I actually look forward to my cleanings, as well. My favorite dental hygienist at Dr. Applegate's office is Markieta. I can't say enough good things about her. She is gentle, kind and an absolute joy to talk to (when you don't have cleaning tools in your mouth). :-) I appreciate having such a great dentist two blocks away from where I live. read more

I moved to Portland, OR in 2001 and was referred to Dr. Sommers, DDS at that time. He has since retired and Dianne Applegate, DDS took over his practice. I have to admit I was a bit worried at first since I liked Dr. Sommers and his staff so well. However, it has been a couple of years now, and I am just as happy with Dr. Dianne Applegate and her staff. My hygenist is very gentle and I actually enjoy getting my teeth cleaned. Dr. Applegate is very friendly and also very gentle. I had to have some periodontal work done and their office referred me to a periodontist that is wonderful too. I never have to wait once I arrive, the office is very clean and it has always been a wonderful experience. I do not have dental insuarance and they have always been very accomodating as far as working with me to pay for my services. They are awsome!!!!!!!! read more

Today was my first ever visit to Dr. Applegate's office and I will definitely be going back. Last year (at a different dentist's office) I experienced the most painful cleaning of my life, so was filled with trepidation at letting anybody near my mouth again. The hygienist who worked on my teeth (I don't know if she'd care to be named...) was absolutely wonderful. They use a two step numbing process for scaling/root planing and it was the most pain-free deep cleaning I've ever had. Talk about above and beyond, she even let me use her Nano Ipod during the procedure to help me relax. I normally don't use words like "pleasant" to describe a visit to the dentist, but today I did/do. Everybody at this office, doctor and staff alike, was warm, efficient, professional and just plain nice. I can't recommend it highly enough. read more

I really appreciate Dr. Applegate's ability to perform dental procedures with such a gentle touch. I've had crown work done by her and she did a wonderful job-they look and feel great. She's very easy to talk with and her office staff is top notch! They all make you feel like part of a family in her office. A great location in Southeast Portland, beautiful modern building, and a very clean office. The front desk is very organized, knowledgeable in dealing with insurance and scheduling appointments, and very good at follow up calls. I have never had to wait for my appointment for anymore than a few minutes and when I needed to get in for an unexpected problem they were able to work me into the schedule. I have been going to Dr. Applegate's office since she took over the practice several years ago. When I heard my old dentist was retiring I was upset, but Dr. Applegate quickly won me over. Like most people I hate going to the dentist, but her office understood my fears and helped put me at ease. I had to have a cavity filled and was terrified, Dr. Applegate and her staff were patient, kind and considerate. I recently had a cleaning and the hygienist was great. She did a thorough job cleaning my teeth, I had a lot of plaque build up and she worked hard to get it all off. I did not feel rushed through the appointment like I have felt at other dentists. Great doctor, great staff, great location in SE Portland. I highly recommend this practice. read more

Finding a dentist that is gentle, highly skilled and personable can be a challenge, but Dr. Applegate is all of these things. She and her staff provide wonderful service in a relaxed office environment. The hygienists are always very quick and efficient with routine cleanings and try to minimize any discomfort. Dr. Applegate does a wonderful job of addressing any problem issues and providing me with the best possible dental care. And the receptionists are always kind and helpful when resolving any insurance discrepancies. The text message reminders are a great way to stay in touch with patients. Dr. Applegate and her staff are by far the most enjoyable that I have ever worked with. From the text reminders for appointments, easy insurance process and clean and upbeat atmosphere, her practice is one to try out! I have worked with several different hygienists over the last year and a half since switching to her office and each one of them remembers who I am and is so kind thought the entire appointment. It is refreshing to look forward to getting cleanings compared to unpleasant experiences in the past. Dr Applegate's business is fantastic. My son and I have been patients of Dr Applegate's for many years. Her dental hygienists and staff are very thorough. My son and I are lucky, but in the past 18 years we have only had one cavity between us. She and her staff have great chair side manor and state of the art technology. I would recommend Dr Applegate for families: the kids will love the treasures after their appointment and will be excited to return. And for any adult who enjoy freindly staff and curtious of your time. I have never had to sit and wait to get in the chair. Dr. Applegate's Dentistry is welcoming, friendly and honest about your dental health and care. They'll even text a reminder about your upcoming appointment which is so convenient compared with taking a call or listening to a voicemail message. I just had my six-monthly cleaning and check up done with Dr. Applegate last Thursday, and the level of care and support I received was amazing. The place is exceptionally clean and comfortable. Their office personnel are very friendly and helpful. The equipments and the tools they used are most sophisticated and advanced. I've seen more dentists than I have teeth* I've moved around and switched dentists at every cleaning. I needed some consistency in my care and I didn't want to feel like a torture pain session every time I went. A true friend recommend that I come see Dianna Applegate. I've been seeing Dr. Applegate and her professional staff since she acquired the business following the retirement of Dr. Sommer several years ago. The facility is clean, bright and modern and the technologies, like the new rotating 360 degree x-ray machine (no more annoying bitewings), is a first class. The staff is friendly and helpful and the business runs on time (if your appointment is at 9am they see you at 9am). They take great care in your comfort and a genuine interest in your oral health. I've been a very satisfied patient of this practice for more than 25 years and was a little nervous when I heard Dr. Applegate was taking over a few years ago. Not to worry! From the warm, friendly and helpful front office staff, to the adept and professional technicians and Dr. Applegate's gentle and proficient dentistry, I have been nothing but pleased with the care I've received. The Associates at the front desk were extremely kind and it was easy to make an appointment. When I walked in for my first appointment, I was welcomed with a smile and a friendly greeting. As a rule, I don't enjoy going to the dentist, and I've been to a few truly bad ones. My favorite dentist is still my childhood dentist in Montana, but Dr. Applegate is my second-favorite, and there's a big gap between her and the rest. The office is clean and modern, and though I come in at the end of the day, they are still running on schedule. The hygienists and Dr. Applegate all talk to me in a friendly and straightforward manner-- and they know more about my insurance plan than I do! I "inherited" Dr. Applegate as a dentist when my dentist retired and she took over the practice. I couldn't be more pleased.
