I was first introduced to this chain in Rochester, New York, back in 2007. I was happy when the first one opened near SUNY Albany, but even more psyched when one opened in Latham (which was a more convenient location for me). The Latham establishment started out ok, the service was decent, but it very quickly fell off. Whenever I went in the place was understaffed and it was always a long wait, so I started avoiding eating there. Other friends had reported that the restaurant was out of the bread/sub roll that they wanted. I moved to the other coast and recently came back to visit Latham, I am happy to say that I had a very positive experience at DiBella's. I went on a workday at lunch time and the counter was appropriately staffed and the line moved QUICKLY. My parents had previously had an issue with their meals and that made them avoid this eatery, but they said the taste had since improved and they will be back. I would also like to point out that the sizes of the subs are quite generous. I would recommend getting a medium or large, that way you can have a second meal out of your sub for not much more money. Placed an online order and went to pick it up at the designated time they gave me. Order was not ready, which I understand so I sit and wait for it to be completed. I wait a half an hour, during which I've seen numerous people come in, place an order and have it made and leave during this time. After 30 minutes, I ask for a refund. They could not even locate my order number, but they do issue me a refund without so much as a sorry that they messed up and wasted an hour of my time. Bunch of incompetent fools. read more

This appears to be a semi local type sandwich stop. Sandwiches are huge. The are generous with their ingredients. I had the Uncle Louie with the spicy mustard and oil. It was pretty good. The everything bread was pretty good to. Portions were big. I was unable to eat the entire medium. read more

okay. truly such an odd place- everyone inside seemed confused and the service was just off, they didn't know the menu items and were writing orders with a ginormous sharpie (???). but whatever about all of that-- the FOOD was the real issue. the veggie sub we got was just mayo, endless mayo and mustard, and four pieces of limp lettuce. the BUFFALO CHICKEN sub had no sauce, no flavor at all- just sweaty chicken, and flavorless onions. no buffalo sauce was put in there at all. i wouldn't mind much but we're on a road trip and now we're just starving on the road, having been unable to eat the majority of our food. truly terrible, i never leave reviews but please for the love of god stay FAR AWAY !! read more

This is a pretty good sub joint. I used to prefer Quiznos when they were here, but they are all closed now. I grew up on Jrecks subs but sadly, we do not have one of those here now either. I'm happy that DiBella's has a veggie sub. I love those. My boyfriend had a turkey sub and he said it was fresh and delicious, too. The service is mostly fast and friendly. Never had any issues here. Dibella's gets 4 stars for sure. They are a solid sub shop which originated in my home town of Rochester, NY. Wegmans supermarkets designed their sub shop to be a Dibella's clone. Any of the cold subs are wonderful. Fresh toppings, tasty cold cuts and delicious bread which might be considered a tad chewy by some. Dibella's oil dressing is really, really tasty. I do take offense to corned beef included on the menu. I would never order it or use it in any sub combination. It belongs on rye bread dude! Put mayonnaise or oil on it and you should be beaten with a salami. The hot subs are just OK. The meatballs are unique and do the job. The steak and chicken subs are not great IMO. If you have a choice from the chains I believe Dibella's is on top when compared to Jersey Mike's, Subway and Jimmy John's. I haven't tried Firehouse. Your local deli should be supported first but in terms of overall quality Dibella's really is excellent. read more

Look at the way others move people in and out. The process is backwards. You order and get a numbered ticket. Man, I had high hopes for this place. Ive heard people rave about this place so I figured why not give it a whirl. The music was cool and the decor was nostalgic. The subs were awful. The Cowboy and the Chicken Philly are two of the "signature subs" they were both unpalatable. Bland would be a compliment. The young lady who checked us out was friendly and the cook was also. My sister, brother-in-law, and I made a lunch stop at DiBella's Subs in Latham before I hopped on a flight back to Tampa, FL. DiBella's can be found right off the Northway along Wade Road in a small strip mall shopping center. DiBella's started as a corner grocery store in Rochester, NY in 1918, and gradually evolved into an Italian import store and deli, specializing in serving its customers high quality cold cuts, cheeses and olives. DiBella's has now grown into an old fashioned sandwich shop with 40 locations in Western New York, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Indianapolis, Michigan, and Ohio. Inside the door you'll find a very casual atmosphere, reminiscent of a 1940's NY style corner sandwich shop, a lot of friendly people, and some amazing-looking sandwiches. The bread is baked fresh, several times a day, and you can have your choice of sesame, multigrain, everything or plain. You can choose from one of their specialty subs, or you can have them build it to order from their vast list of ingredients. You also have the choice of getting your sub sandwich served classic style or grilled. They had well over a dozen specialty subs ranging from cheesesteaks, Italian meatball, roast beef dip, tuna salad, and buffalo chicken. They also had a host of deli sandwiches, and after much mental anguish I settled on the Dagwood which was made with turkey, ham, and corned beef. My girlfriend and I were looking for a good sub shop and came to this place with an open mind, little did we know how AWFUL this place was. We got the steak and cheese and chicken bacon and ranch. The subs had absolutely no flavor and were soaked in dressing. The steak sauce on the steak and cheese tasted so cheap and rotten we had to throw the entire sub away just after two bites. Summary- a damn good sub with lots of great options for toppings and some cool bread choices. Food- 4 Stars The Dagwood was better than the cheesesteak I had at the location in Albany. Their Cheesesteaks are simply under seasoned in my opinion. I would stick their cold stuff. I like it that they offer some good and interesting bread choices and three different "hot" peppers as well. The everything has kind of a hard crust, almost stale. This is a well above average sub shop that features more food for less money (a large sub on delicious multigrain bread will easily feed two adults) than the inferior products at Subway, Quiznos, and Mr. Subb. Other reviews will give you details of this, but I instead will lead you through the story of A Submarine Carol: A Cautionary Tale. Interior: a corporate office tower in Rochester, NY. A man in a top hat with a cigar is counting piles and piles of money. He looks like Mr. Moneybags from Monopoly. It is Old Man SCROOGE DIBELLA. Cut to: The GHOST OF SUBMARINE SANDWICHES PAST appears suddenly out of the gloom. It appears in the form of Great Grandpa Dibella, from the old country, and he takes SCROOGE back through time to the original DiBella's, an old-fashioned deli and grocery store that makes subs, in the 1940s. The store is remarkably the same as in 1918, when it was founded, and as it will be in the early 1990s, when I, your humble narrator, had the good fortune to be taken for a tasty if idiosyncratic home-made sandwich on a visit to The Flour City. This is absolutely an excellent place subs are absolutely delicious I must say though they are a bit on the expensive side but to me they are well worth it. The bread is freshly made throughout the day and it truly has the taste like it has been made fresh throughout the day it's not stale and hard. It's made to order so you can see the subs are made exactly the way you want them to be made and they are very large so 1 sub will definitely fill you up because it is longer than a footlong but it also costs more as well. The filling inside of the sub 2 is great as well cuz they really stack it and make it thick. We often come here as a family to eat because it's one of the best places that we can come to to get subs but today I came to get a sub platter to bring to my families and it was a simple and pleasurable experience everything was ready it was done on time and I will definitely be doing this again. After living in WNY for four years, I have a high standard for subs and I blame Wegmans. Luckily, I don't have to shuffle out to Buffalo to get my fave sub because I can visit DiBella's and eat an exact replica when visiting my parents in the capital region! These subs are gigantic and my waistline would never allow me to eat here on a daily basis. I HATE that they have the calorie counts on the menu because I rather be ignorant and not know that I'm about to consume 800+ calories. The bread is thick and toasty - with or without seeds, but I prefer the sesame. They have a house made oil, which includes yummy italian herbs and seasonings. They pile on the meat and cheese, so you could easily get two sandwiches out of one (or if you're like me, stuff it down before you even notice that it's too huge for one sitting). Recently I catered from DiBella's subs for a Holiday Luncheon at the Latham, NY restaurant. I would highly recommend them! They were so friendly, professional, prompt - they let me pick-up before they even opened for the day! Stacy who took my initial order and Asia the Catering Manager were wonderful! Asia even loaded my car. The sub platters were so fresh and delicious, (The bread is baked in their store that morning) Our staff loved them so much, we had to ask if we could order 6 more platters that day as we were running out and the manager said yes! This was all during the lunch hour and they absolutely made it happen within 45 minutes or it may have been less! Yes, Asia helped me carry them to the car once again! If you've been to Buffalo/Rochester much DiBella's Subs is a place you see often. It's an average sub shop that is much better than a place like Subway, Jimmy Johns or Potbelly. I'd compare the quality to Jersey Mikes or Panera. Meanwhile, DiBella's offers more variety. What I remember most about this location is the number of employees working the counter and trying to push the lunch crowd through as quick as possible. Management has done a great job at training employees and making customer service a priority. Given visits to a half dozen of their locations in WNY (and this one) it's clear that there is nothing on the menu to complain about. On the other hand, overly impress either. Why come to DiBella's then? Several reasons. There's value. These are large subs priced fair and I like that they brew their own tea. It's a good addition to the subs. On drawback, on the other hand, is they don't have soup, which is a staple at many delis. What should you order? That depends on what you prefer. All of their subs are filling. We've tried their meatball sub a half-dozen times always hoping to be blown away, but it ends up being just average. The one thing that we always remember about the subs is that the bread is bulky/heavy and consumes the sandwich, but sure tastes good. It seems the bread consumes 90% of it with meat and cheese getting the final 10. Normally, I order a turkey and salami. I'd like to add pepperoni, but they don't have it. Hands down if you like sandwiches this is a great place to come for lunch. You can get in and out quick - without spending too much money. read more

My online order: Large Hot Meatball Sub w/ Mozz on Everything (usually comes with 4-5 meatballs) - I get large because I like to save the other half if I get stuck at work and can't go home. What I got: 3 cold and (burnt/hard?) meatballs on medium-sized plain bread. Was an empty restaurant when I walked in 15 minutes later so not busy at all. Just one easy online order for a sub. Nothing special, no-frills. This is the 3rd time in 7 months, always with ordering online. Lesson learned. Need to watch them make your food, or else. Really worries me. 15 minutes of waiting just for these girls to say sorry for the wait and hand me a sub with pretty much everything wrong. I wouldn't mind paying 16$ for a sub if the people would do their jobs and not sit behind the counter giggling and chit chatting about who knows what. I used to love this place but I'm done with it. The people that work there either don't know how to read or they just don't give a shit. I walk in and the lady takes my order she writes everything down the way it was supposed to be because I sat there and watched her. I made sure of that because the last two subs I got there were messed up. I ordered extra onions. What do I get I got a little cup with probably about four onions in it maybe five slices of onion. I ordered all my dressing on the side because I wasn't going to be eating it till that night and I didn't want everything to get soggy. What does she do she puts it all on the sub and then puts dressing in a cup. When I go to eat it the thing is awesome soggy and you had a throw the role away because I was just so soggy through. Great place. Our favorite sub shop. However I was frustrated when myself and multiple people kept showing up Sunday April 19th and dibellas was closed. They aren't usually closed on Sunday and there was no explanation as to why they are closed. At the least a sign on the door would have been good even during a global pandemic. That being said this is a great restaurant and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a great sub. read more
