A good concept that feels overly commercial now -- like management has stopped paying attention. I review a lot of restaurants and usually give five stars, especially for barbecue, which I really enjoy. This place, unfortunately, fell short. When I arrived, the restaurant was empty but clean. The two staff members behind the counter were fine, but communication was awkward because a large plexiglass barrier from the COVID era is still in place. It makes it surprisingly hard to see or hear the person taking your order. I ordered a pulled pork plate with two sides and garlic bread. The pulled pork itself looked and tasted good -- not exceptional, but solid. The sides were the biggest disappointment. Options were limited, and when I asked for greens (a common barbecue side), they substituted green beans without mentioning they didn't actually offer greens. The baked beans tasted almost exactly like canned Heinz or Campbell's pork-and-beans with no noticeable seasoning or additions. The green beans weren't canned, but they still weren't very good, and I ended up not eating them. The garlic bread was also underwhelming -- heavy on garlic but tasting like it had been prepared hours earlier rather than freshly grilled. The sauce station was fine, though most barbecue places simply put sauce on the tables. The sauce itself was decent. Overall: The pulled pork was the only part of the meal that felt restaurant-quality. The sides and bread were surprisingly poor, and the overall experience just didn't feel cared for. We stopped at Dickey's BBQ in Fredericksburg, VA while traveling north on I-95, and I'm so glad we did! The place just reopened in April, and it shows -- fresh, clean, and clearly run by a team that cares. I had the three-rib combo with fries and a drink -- the ribs were fall-off-the-bone good, tender and full of flavor. My husband had the pulled pork, and he was just as impressed. Everything tasted fresh and well-seasoned without being too heavy. And the cherry on top? Free ice cream on your way out. Yep, free. So fun and such a nice touch! Services was a weak display of support, service, ambiance or even the ability to provide eye contact or clear communication of information and instruction etc. There was lots of load communication, joking between staff members which drowned any chance of potentially placing a comprehensive order. We got there after lots of repetition. As I waited for my orders, I asked about sauces, no real conversation came from staff so, I took the necessary steps to prepare a "take out", of four plastic containers. The lids were not fitting correctly so, needless to say it took a while and consequential clean up....my order finally was ready. Cashier shouted my order, as she unconsciously, watch me, struggle with plastic containers. There were two customers, me and another that had his to go order and was waiting patiently I might add, to prepare his own sauces "to go", as well. However, one thing I did notice, about the ambience, the African american cashier was not very patient. I know this because, the sound of her long sculpture nails tapping on the metal container as she waited for me to respond. My back was turned to her as I was still struggling to prepare my sauces for travel into the down pouring of rain from storm that swept in. I live across the street from our neighborhood Dicky's. Once I got a chance to look at my meal that I was so looking forward to eat, it made me disappointed, immediately. First thing that caught my attention was the "hotdog" roll for "side bun" was discovered to be cold and wet. The meat was a lot less than in past visit. Also cold. We came in the day after Christmas for lunch. My husband and I have eaten at this location twice, and enjoyed it. Today we came with my adult son and daughter in law, who were in from Ohio, and had never had Dickey's (so they had a lot of questions), and my stepdaughter, who lives in Chesapeake, and had also never had them. Nevertheless, our orders were still quite simple. There were only two employees working. One seemed extremely knowledgeable (the male), but the other (the female), seemed completely confused. My husband and I ordered the 3 meat combo to share, with double brisket, pulled pork, fries and green beans. My stepdaughter ordered a 6 count of chicken wings and a green beans side. My son ordered the Old School plate with brisket, polish kielbasa, bbq baked beans, cabbage slaw, and an extra side (creamed spinach). My daughter in law ordered the pulled pork sandwich plate. with mac n cheese, and baked potato casserole (an extra side). Her meal was supposed to include a large beverage. We also ordered 2 small beverages, and I had a free 'Big Yellow cup'. When the total came out, I thought that it sounded higher than it should have been. It turns out, that the female, the one who seemed completely confused by our order, had put a 2 meat platter onto our bill, which we hadn't ordered ($14.95 plus tax). They got our order wrong, and plated a baked potato casserole on our platter, which I noted that we hadn't even ordered. She said that she heard me say something about it. Well yes, I did ASK the other employee about it. But I didn't order it. They didn't give my son any sauces for his platter, which he should have notified them about, but he didn't. My daughter in law was supposed to get a large drink with her pulled pork sandwich combo, but I had to argue with the female about it, because she had already handed me a big yellow cup... the one I was getting free with my app. She ultimately handed me another large cup, then said, "whatever". Most aggravating, the female rang up all of our meals with sides that we hadn't even ordered, because they're all priced the same. But it makes the receipt difficult to read as a customer, because the receipt doesn't reflect what we've actually purchased. She was just putting in random sides. Also, according to our receipt, most of us all got pulled chicken (when technically nobody got pulled chicken). Still yet, when I brought it to their attention that we were charged for an entire 2 meat plate that we hadn't even ordered, the male employee did kindly and efficiently reverse the charges for it. Since it appears to be a struggle for the female employee to accurately get the orders correct both on the plates, and at the register, I don't understand why they aren't writing down the orders. Even as she was ringing it in, she was so confused, we ran it back twice for her, and she still messed up. Also, as a customer, I would appreciate my receipt accurately reflecting what I ordered and paid for; not just random items, which again, makes it even more confusing for all involved. Overall, the man was efficient, helpful, and knowledgeable; the woman employee was argumentative, confused, and rushing us through. We were the only people eating at the restaurant, so they weren't at all busy. The quality of the food was excellent; the meat was flavorful, and we'll likely return again, with hopes that they can work on the customer service side. read more

For a chain restaurant, meh it's ok. The meats didn't really have that much flavor or tenderness. Had to use their bbq sauces to mask how plain it was. Came in on a Saturday, ordered 45 mins to an hour ahead of time, came and had to wait an additional 20ish minutes. Low staffed, only had three people working and of course the lunch rush didn't help. Overall the food was alright, nothing popped out. They were out of pulled pork, couldn't order online because their place don't do online so I had to phone it in which was annoying. Ordered this on Monday the 26th of May and once again I was not impressed. I ordered the 2 meat combo and what I got was not worth what i paid for it. I got 2 small ribs with barley any meat on them and the brisket were a few pieces sliced and most were not editable due to how over cooked they were. **Disappointed After the Reopening - Not Worth the Hype or the Price** We were genuinely excited to try this place again after the reopening, but unfortunately, it was a huge letdown across the board. We ordered two brisket sandwich combos, and right off the bat, the brisket was a miss. The texture was off--almost rubbery--and it had an overwhelming burnt taste that even the BBQ sauce couldn't mask. The fries were another letdown. They used to serve delicious waffle fries, but now they've switched to something completely different--and not in a good way. The fries we got were undercooked in parts, bland, and honestly just sad. To make it worse, the bags weren't even filled halfway. We'd rather have McDonald's fries, and that's saying something. The sweet tea, which used to be a highlight, was stale-tasting and barely sweet. It felt like it had been sitting around too long or brewed improperly. We also tried a small side of the bacon BBQ baked beans. Not only were they just "meh" in flavor, but there was no bacon in them at all, which was confusing and disappointing for something labeled "bacon BBQ." With the quality this low and the prices this high, it's not something we can justify coming back for. The restaurant was mostly empty and some of the chairs were already up on the tables. I had no issues with what I ordered as if you have been to one Dickeys, you have been to them all. The side dishes might change depending on region. There were no overall issues with my meal. Just nothing spectacular. I have to say wow! We use them for catering the wedding this Saturday. First of all they were right on time. The owner came delivered the food. Came here for the first time for dinner, staff was nice and accommodating, establishment was clean as well as the bathrooms (that's always a plus) . The ribs were a little too hard. I did fall in love with the rolls, cute little baguettes with the right amount of sweetness. The Spinach was my favorite. Mixed with Asiago cheese. We have been getting food delivered for some months now, via GrubHub. We tried Dickey's Barbeque today. WOW! We ordered brisquet chili which was packed woth meat and delicious. Their dinner rolls are perfection. We also got pulled pork sides of slaw, beans, green beans, and mac-n-cheese. Add to that a pound of marinated chicken breast. Honestly so disappointed. I'm in town visiting from Los Angeles and have never had a bad experience with Dickeys. We ordered through postmates and when we received the order it was the wrong name/order. I called and spoke to Aaron (manager) and he informed me that 9/10 times they don't even complete postmate orders so he never made the order at ALL! The order we received was completed for PICK UP and ordered through another company. How is there a mistake this large? I asked if he could send our correct order and he let me know that he couldn't and it was too late to send out another driver and they didn't have enough meats to complete our meal. I am not a barbecue person, but my gosh, this place has good BBQ! My only complaint: I felt like I wish I had more to eat for the $8 I paid for the sandwich, and the line is a little long (although excused as the person in front was dealing with kids, an they make everything in front of you). Other than that, the sauces were great, an they even give free soft serve ice cream, which my daughter loves. They give out signature plastic yellow cups, which we like using around the house. The sandwiches are made fresh in front of you. The environment and decor is cool. Now, if you are a real BBQ-addict, this may not be up your standards of real southern BBQ. What did you expect? It is a small restaurant where you order at a counter - great for a quick lunch. To give it low stars for not having award-winning sauce or for using hickory smoke instead of cherry/apple, well is just ridiculous. To also complain that they wrap their meats and pull it out to slice it as they serve it is also without merit; Arby's and other fast-serving meat places do it this way as well. It's what lowers cost and keep it moist. If you want a fast, convenient place to get some BBQ in a decent, clean and family atmosphere here in Massaponax, then this does just fine, and then some. Well, the BBQ is moist and tasty, I'll them that - but the sauces are all tomato based - how about a little Carolina style guys? Vinegar and red peppers - that are a lot of southerner's in these parts and NC style BBQ would be a real treat. Ordered family pack, and a baked potato - somehow they managed to not give us the baked potato but two orders of rolls (okay, but doughie - maybe 3 more mins in the oven?) Too late and too tired to go back for it so we got the shaft on that one. Since our order was to go, we figured we would get some sauces (there were dozens of them with lids on a tray behind the cashier - but no, she directed me to the spoon it yourself self-serve (but why, we were not eating in... I chalk this up to the hair twisting teenager who was like a deer in the headlights with one foot nailed to the floor, spinning and spinning and getting very little done except creating further chaos. So my first visit ever to a Dickey's was mixed - moist, tasty BBQ but pitiful service and nothing but 3 red sauces to pick from (and dip it yourself for take out? Seriously?) And NO Splenda for the ice tea. NONE. Sad. Maybe we'll go back, maybe not - I hate bad service so much I may just find someone else to take my money. Lunch with Husband at Dickey's Barbecue Pit. When we drove up, there was a sign that said the sides were made with pride or something like that. It didn't mention that they were crafted somewhere else and heated up in a big bag on the stove. I had the Westerner with polish sausage and brisket. The meats were good. Nicely smoked although the brisket was slightly overdone and dry. The brisket had a nice smoke ring and both of them tasted smokey. The bun was really nothing to write home about. It was cold and tasteless. I moved it aside and just ate the meat. For sides I had the beans and the "potato casserole". The potato casserole was mashed potatoes. They were not warm -- not cold but not warm. The beans were okay. They were more savory and not the sickly sweet type you can get sometimes. The pickles and onions for the sandwich were two pickle slices and two large (but mostly flavorless) raw onions. Both were on the side of the plate. The presentation was silly actually. The team was fast and efficient. We had our food before we had drinks filled. We weren't the only ones. I could see the food coming out. Also it was Sunday so the kids were eating for free. So in all, this wasn't the place for us. It's okay but I was hoping for great. It was fast and clean and it's okay. Maybe we'll give it another try and skip the sandwich. read more
