Second time ever at mission bbq and an update to my review. Had the brisket, pulled chicken, Cole slaw, and peach cobbler. Chicken: good. Moist. My preference is for whole pieces of smoked chicken but I get it. The NC sauce in the table was an ok compliment to this. Brisket: got the combo lean/fatty. Both were good, lean just a touch dry but not horrible. Cole slaw: good. Was worried when I sat down because there's no s&p on the table.....didn't need it. Peach cobbler: star of dinner. Nothing beats hot peach cobbler, even if it's just "pretty good" cobbler. Overall: food was good. Nothing spectacular, but solid. Much better than my first trip. Service was excellent (it wasn't super busy). Ambiance: sort of a Texas locker room/military/fire department sort of thing going on. Pretty ok. Cons: food doesn't stay warm long on a metal tray inside a cold restaurant. And out of 7 choices for bbq sauce, not a single "really good" one. The Memphis sauce was probably the best of all 7. We were there on Thursday (8/20) for my mother's birthday. I was sitting at the table with my mom and someone was walking around table to table. She asked me if I was eating, that really offended me because my wife was getting our food but I was just sitting at the table. If I wasn't going to eat then why would I be sitting there. This was my first visit to this 'newer' location. I say newer, because I saw when it opened, but just haven't had the chance to stop in until a few days ago. The place is exactly like all the others I've been to between VA - PA. Service is great, friendly, professional, very helpful, and what they have made a business out of - just like all the other locations I've visited. The menu is the same as well. I tried their turkey and jalapeño sausage for my two meats, and their cheesy potatoes and beans as sides. The turkey was moist and had a nice smokey flavor. It tasted great, in fact! It was so much better than the sausage I got. The sausage was cooked great, had a nice smoke, but was bland and tasted almost like a boring ham. It definitely needed a sauce on it, and the staff recommended their mustard sauce, which I thought was really nice. In fact, my favs on this visit were the KC, Mustard, and Nashville Hot Sauce. I was there during the noon time period where the National Anthem plays and it was great to see all the patrons participate in the Anthem. The brisket always hits the spot. We get the slices and typically don't even add sauce, but that's not to say they don't have some great ones. I think the Smokey mountain and Georgia mustard have to be my favorite. Great spot to kick back and taste the heart of America while feeling like you're in a log cabin. read more

The pulled pork was good, maybe a tad dry, and you have multiple sauces to add to your sandwich. I really like their Cole slaw and beans. My daughter got the Mac and cheese- which I would avoid. She also got the collards, which are pretty decent tasting. This is fast food, with a them, hailing our first responders, military and veterans. Gotta love that. When Mission BBQ first opened it was great. Hadn't been there for a while so I stopped by last night to pick up dinner. Ordered the 3 meat plate to go with brisket and 2 ribs and was very disappointed. The brisket was very dry. No smoke or rub flavor as if it had been cooked in an oven and not on a smoker. The ribs were a little bit better. Had some rub flavor but definitely lacking any smoke flavor. The ribs were also very dry. It was as if what I received was day old meats that were warmed up and served. I might also add that the price for what I received was way more than the meal was worth. I love their North Carolina style pulled pork barbecue, with lightly creamy coleslaw with a splash of vinegar, a slice of corn bread and some collard greens !!! That's what my wife and I had for lunch today. This barbecue reminds me of when I was teenager and my dad would stop by the Pig and Chick roadside watering hole in Chantilly to pick up a dozen Maryland Old Bay steamed crabs and some barbecue sandwiches to bring home after work. I have good memories of those delicious family dinners. Much more recently, my wife and I completed our drive back to Fredericksburg from a vacation at Nags Head, NC, before I finally had the North Carolina style barbecue that I had been craving the whole return trip home. It was too early to have the barbecue when we were heading back. Where did I get this barbecue? On Plank Road, at Mission BBQ. It was and continues to be delicious. Next time, I'll treat myself to their sizeable chocolate brownies that I saw at the ordering counter. When we got to Mission BBQ, it was about 1 pm on a Sunday afternoon. First let me say this was one of cleanest stops we made on our trip! With that being said, this is not a cheap drive thru fast casual restaurant! The average price for 1 meal is $11. That not terrible for good Bbq, this however was mediocre BBQ. The brisket, though cooked well, lacked any type of seasoning whatsoever. Seriously I think there wasn't even a sprinkle of salt or a dash of pepper on that meat! The pulled pork was just okay. I will say having a number of Bbq sauces to chose from to pour on top definitely helped. My favorite was mixture of the Tupelo Honey & the Kansas City. The macaroni was cheesy but it was missing something. The fries were perfect- the right amount of crunchy to salty. Oh and the cornbread, hmmm idk if you could even call that cornbread. It was more like a gritty stick to your mouth piece of brick! I know a box Jiffy cornbread produces better results then what we had! All in all, I give this a 3 out of 5. So I ordered a to go order of pulled chicken and brisket and had my son pick it up on his way home. It was supposed to be 6 lbs each. When we got it home we weighed it just out of curiosity. Each pan weighed 5.14 lbs. Mistakes happen so I wasn't mad. I called them and let them know. This is why I gave them 5 stars. They immediately recognized the issue and refunded me a pound of each meat. Didn't have to argue and they were extremely apologetic and easy to work with. Great news...another business eatery in Fredericksburg. Unfortunately, it didn't impress. So here's my Yelp review in a nutshell. Chain restaurant with a ton of great memorabilia on the walls supporting military! But, they don't give a military discount! You "support" our military, but don't offer a military discount? I would HIGHLY suggest that you add that option. Otherwise, all I hear is a bunch of bologna propaganda! A 10% discount for active service members or veterans wouldn't hurt. Even Wendy's offers a 10% discount to service members, EMT, police and fireman. This is a great location in Fredericksburg. Nice decor, busy busy busy when we came, which means either people are loving it or at least trying it. My husband ordered the plate with 2 meats. Prices shown do NOT include a side, so it can get a bit pricey. He got the pulled pork and pulled chicken with a piece of cornbread. You get a scoop of each on a paper lined tray. I got the 1 meat plate with pulled pork, cornbread and a side of fries for us to split. There are a variety of sauces on the table to try out. I enjoyed my pork, but my husband found his to be fatty. The fries were very good! Cornbread was dry. Fountain machine in the lobby for unlimited refills of soda or tea. There is an option to pickup a glass bottle of soda at the entrance, in cool little retro bottles, which is nice. Beer on tap. Basic fast food honestly. Nothing to rave about. Tbh, this wasn't our 1st choice for BBQ while passing through but it was what we were craving so we decided to give it a try. Overall, not a bad place. Food came out very quick, considering how many we bought. We tried their pulled pork sandwich, the kids meal with pulled chicken sandwich and fries, baby back ribs and sides of Mac and cheese and their cheesy potatoes. They also have a variety of BBQ sauces to try at every table ranging from tangy, sweet and spicy and bold flavors. They all tasted pretty good. The brisket isn't quite my grandfathers, but I would still eat it any day of the week. The Mac and cheese was good, nothing crazy to say. The baked beans were so good, though. Packed with Smokey and sweet flavors, I could have had another order. My wife ordered the black plate special, the smoked pastrami and we both agreed that it was the star of the entire eating experience. I periodically go to Mission BBQ and in the past have always been impressed. This time ... not so much. I placed an order for pickup. The cashier waiting on me when I checked in seemed distracted. She did ask me if I wanted a receipt and I responded affirmatively and told her I had two separate orders that I had completed online. She gave me a receipt for one and then wandered off, never to return. Here's what I thought of the food: Cornbread: One of the highlights of this meal. Moist and tasty. Brisket: The two words that come to mind are "Gobi Desert". I knew it was going to be dry because I saw the guy behind the counter cutting it and, man, he probably needed a chainsaw. No bueno. French Fries: Soggy and mealy. Turkey Sandwich: Better than expected. Beans with Meat Chunks: Excellent. Ribs: OK, but like the brisket, dry. Sausage with Cheese and Jalapeños: somewhere between room temperature and cold. Disappointing. Mac and Cheese: Another surprisingly delicious item. Potato Salad: W-a-y too much mayo. Shredded Pork: Flavorful and nicely cooked. I also wanted to give a shout out to the guy ensuring that my order was complete and packed up properly. He did a great job. We were in town visiting family and decided to get BBQ for Sunday lunch. Mission was the closest so we headed over. Decided yo wait to order on-site as we had never been to nor even heard of Mission BBQ! Staff here was awesome from the cashier to the counter server! We felt we were special people and they went out of their way to describe try I've the selections in food and sauces. Best of all we loved all the food-especially the brisket!
