It pains me to say this but our last experience was not great. They added tomatoes to their collards which was gross. Minced pork was very dry - a sauce shouldn't make up for it. It definitely felt like it had a loyal and local crowd and was unpretentious in nature. Service was friendly. While we enjoyed out visit we probably won't be back. Such a great spot. The food is spectacular. My goto is always the chopped pork sandwich. Onion rings are amazing. Their green beans bring you back to your childhood. The location. The interior tells a story, one that is stuck in time, but holds community value. Don't let that fool you. If you want to find a bbq at a fair price with no frills, this is the place. I think I got the deluxe plate? All I know is it came with 2 sides. For sides I chose green beans, and collard greens with bacon. The plate already came with their classic fries - both of which were very good. The meat was also on point - a little on the cold side, but still tasty. Service was fast, maybe because we came so late and were one of three families in the restaurant. Staff were polite, friendly, and attentive. We had an issue paying up as the POS system wasn't playing nice, but that's not their fault - I've used the same one and it sometimes has issues. Came in for lunch on a weekday and they were moderately busy, which is good to see. Lived in the area for many years and this was my first time ever coming here. I love BBQ and smoked meats, but never heard rave reviews about this place, so when I had the opportunity to try it recently, I did. Service was friendly and helpful. The menu is interesting with lots of fried food, such as fried hot dogs and hamburgers (never heard of a fried hamburger) and the brisket plate I got was chopped brisket which was sauced. Odd way for a true smokehouse to serve brisket, as it's never supposed to have sauce on it, until the person eating it adds sauce. The brisket tasted decent, far from the best I've ever had, but definitely nowhere near the worst. The plate came with a nicely toasted hamburger bun, so I made a sandwich and that tasted good. Six years coming to Fredericksburg and Wifey and I FINALLY stopped in for BBQ at Allman's. A very exciting meal for us. This is the kind of place where I almost always find a good meal...and usually good service. Normally we would have tried to get a number of items on the menu, but we wanted to save ourselves for a big dinner we needed to go to later in the evening. Wifey and I decided to sit inside as it was a little chilly and we each ordered the BBQ pulled pork sandwich platters. Each platter comes with two sides so we ordered potato salad, Mac and cheese, cole slaw and baked beans and then some extra cornbread. It's always a great deal when you can also order a couple beers with your mail...not a great selection, but Wifey had a Rolling Rock and I had a Yuengling. The sandwiches were large and the pork was tender and tasty. Platters came with both a traditional BBQ sauce and a vinegar based sauce (North Carolina flair). Both sauces were good, but I liked the vinegar sauce a little better. The sides were pretty good- cole slaw was delicious; the Mac and cheese was a little overdone, but tasted great; the potato salad was very close, but needed a little salt or acidity so I added some of the sauce which made all the difference; finally, the beans tasted canned, but I'm not sure they were-not overly sweet, but flavorful. This is such a classic! The interior and exterior have their 70+ year charm still intact. And the food is delicious! We stop in when we pass thru the area since my spouse used to live in nearby Falmouth. We each enjoyed the heaping plates of pulled pork bbq and didn't even have room for the bun! And we loaded up on tasty sides. The onion rings were soooo good! We also had the beans and some Mac and cheese. Both were also tasty. Oh.... and the Cole slaw! All totally yummy!! I have driven by Allman's BBQ for years, traveling up and down Route 1 from NOVA to NC. Saturday was the day, we finally stopped to give it a try. Funny that this is a BBQ place and we really wanted Hotdogs. This old-time, little place with grandmas kitchen table and chairs for dining wasn't bad. The way the customers came in and struck up a conversation, you knew it was a local favorite. Our server, did not get her name, was such a sweetheart and let us know her favorites. Final decision was 2-Slaw Dogs, which they fry, one with crinkle fries, the other with potato salad. I am not a fan of crinkle fries but these were really tasty and hot. The potato salad was more of a deli style when I was expecting a southern style potato salad. It was good but not what I expected. The hotdogs are deep fried, pretty good for a cheat day. Very delicious bbq in the Fredericksburg area! It felt like a mom and pops diner. Theres plenty of street parking right outside the restaurant. There's outdoor seating with lights and fans. I'm sure it's very cute at night! It was very busy when we arrived, but were seated right away and the waitress made sure we were still taken care of. The food came out quick! I really enjoyed my pulled pork sandwich and my husband enjoyed his brisket. The sandwich had lots of pulled pork and with my sides the meal was more than enough to fill me up! Stopped in based on the fame and history of Allman's. Very small location, but they try to use the space they have as best as possible. We had about 10 people in our group so we tried everything on the admittedly very small menu- except the ribs. They were out of ribs. Which is pretty weird due a BBQ place that otherwise only serves 2 other meats- chicken and pork. Regardless, both were good, just dry. There was plenty of sauce on the tables to help with that though, and I think that's how they intend it. I was very impressed with the sides- I loved the paprika on the coleslaw, and I'm a fan of more bland potato salad (goes great with the hot sauce!). Cornbread could've been more moist but not bad at all. I also appreciate the toasted bun they give you. read more

ATTENTION !!!! I have eaten in your restaurant for over two (2) years now. I normally eat there twice each week ( $ 20.00 + each time). I just came from having lunch (Sat., Aug. 24, 2024) and now that I am home, I have decided today is my LAST visit to your restaurant. The prices are great, the waitress staff is great and I love the old world feeling BUT - after two years of asking to have my French Fries well done - not brown on the outside and raw in the inside - I am done. I asked today for Well Done Fries, just as I have asked for two years but the cook (whoever that is) must think the customer does not know what THEY really need. Traffic between Washington DC and Richmond VA on interstate 95 can be awful so the alternative route 1 offers some relief. Along the way I found Allman's BBQ. It's really not hidden so no need to search to far off the roadway. It's a small, old fashion place that was perhaps a gas station years ago but now it serves BBQ. I had the pulled pork. They serve it naked and offer sauces you can add yourself. The hot was the best. You get coleslaw and 2 sides in the platter I got. Everything was really good and plentiful, especially the baked beans, and there were lots of choices. Ribs are available after 3 pm so don't expect any for lunch. The table only had one Original BBQ sauce which was okay; it's a vinegar-based sauce and I usually prefer thicker sauces. Luckily the waitress told us about their Rib sauce! It's not the best and it's not the worst. At best it's average on a good day. The menu is small, like real small. I had a half rack with collard greens and Mac n cheese. The wife had the puller pork sandwich with cole slaw and collards. The ribs where nothing special, I think Mission BBQ has a better tasting rib, I was able to taste my wife's BBQ sandwich and it was okay. The sides were good and had some good flavor. Overall the dining experience was good, the waitress was friendly and tried hard to make us comfortable given the small space. Some Virginia history right here. Allman's has been on my list for my somewhat hit and miss experience with VA BBQ. Luckily this was a hit. This place feels very authentic, and does make you feel like you are stepping back into the 1950s from when it opened. The service is extremely welcoming and polite, and the crowd here seems to be a mix of newcomers and regulars. My wife and I each got the Deluxe Sandwich which is the pulled pork with two sides. It's a small menu - always a good sign from my experience in a BBQ place. It usually doesn't turn out well when you see so many types of meat coming from the smoker. Here it's pork: pulled/chopped shoulder or ribs. The sandwiches were quite large and topped with a tasty creamy slaw. The pork is unadorned, but very moist with great smoke flavor. I added a little of their homemade vinegar sauce, which worked perfectly with the meat. Quite satisfying. I saw a patron next to me with a half rack of ribs that looked divine, definitely my order next time. The sides were nothing to write home about, but who cares? I wanted old school, authentic VA BBQ. Oh, and the prices are fantastic. It is criminal what BBQ goes for in No. Virginia so it was nice to see the cost pretty low here. Great service and decor, solid BBQ. This is not a knock, but a testimony to the fact Allman's sticks with what they know, bar-b-q, great sides and milk shakes. I have many fond memories of going to Allman's in my childhood and dousing my fries in their barbecue sauce. I went here when visiting with my mom and man oh man they haven't changed a bit. They still have the stuffed wild boar on the wall that I remember from my childhood. My go to at Allman's is a barbecue deluxe sandwich, which comes with two sides.
