Best donuts in Oakland/San Leandro, and I have tried MANY different places. The best thing about them is that the donuts are fresh. You can tell they were baked that morning, and the icing is SO flavorful-their chocolate is really fudgy. They often even come out of the case warm! New go-to donut shop in the East Bay; I can't believe it took me this long to discover it. It's an old-school donut place that has a line in the morning before work. There are separate lines for coffee and donuts, and if you can figure out how those lines work before having had coffee, you're a better person than I am. So, it's Saturday early morning, and still dark. I had to walk the dogs b/f jumping in the ride to head on over to Dicks. After reading the glowing reviews, this must be another potential 'go-to' donut lounge. To get a donut shop's best shot is to get there right when they open. That's when their donuts are the freshest. If you have ever experienced a warm & fresh donut, you know what I mean. Some donut amateurs posted complaints that the donuts were "stale tasting", or that they were out of their favorite donut when they strolled in @ 11AM. DUDE: Get there earlier! I have found that donuts seem to have a 'Quality' half-life of about 2 hours. What does this mean? This means, that once Dick's open their doors, the optimum quality of their donuts decrease by a 'Quality Value' of 50% every ~2 hours after they open their doors. "Whaaaaaaaat?" you say? Another 120 minutes, and the quality decreases by a factor of another 50%. In short, by ~11AM, the freshness, fluffiness, savoriness of any of their donuts is only ~25% of what they WERE when they were fresh: A donut @ 6AM is clearly NOT the same donut @ 11AM. God forbid any Hack who strolls into Dick's @ 3PM for one of their pastries. Break a car's windows with them by that time. For all intents and purposes by 3PM, they are in the 'Day-Old' territory of freshness. You wouldn't pay for, and then eat Day Old Donuts ....would you? Back to Dick's: To put it simply, Dicks is just 'OK'. The owners do a fine job with their product. The donuts produced are large, reasonably (some would consider 'cheap') priced, and have a nice texture. They could be a bit lighter and a little less 'doughier', but I am fine with that. I didn't sample their Apple Fritters b/c they weren't out yet (still makin' them). The lady said not until 8:30AM. They also don't make Blueberry Cake donuts.......Blasphemous! I would say that Dick's is better than most D-Shops, but not the 'Best' as some reviewers have claimed. I won't say 'Meh' either. Prior to this morning, I had never even heard of this donut shop. A co-worker of mine brought in donuts for us, and I decided to go with the Apple Fritter. Well, this is no ordinary Apple Fritter, as this Fritter is the size of a softball; therefore, I was not going to eat the whole thing. I cut the Fritter in half, and still left a small planet in the box. As for the texture, it was soft and fantastic. The apples were fantastic as was the crust. I take public transportation everywhere, but the bus that stops in front of there, is about two blocks from my apartment and best believe that I will be going there one day when I am off of work. read more

1 star for the memories but that's about it. My family and I have been going to dick's donuts for as far back as I can remember. We've lived in the MacArthur area since the 80s and have always preferred dick's donuts over any other donut shop in and around this area. Needless to say some of my fondest childhood memories consist of stopping by dick's to grab a chocolate on chocolate donut before school or early morning outing. Side note: my siblings and I are all in our mid to early 20s and have been going to dick's since preschool and perhaps before. However, today marked an end to those fond memories when, as is custom in my family, my father picked up some donuts for my siblings and myself. Chocolate on chocolate for me, sugar donut for my sister and traditional glaze for my brother. My siblings had already devoured their own but as I was midway into my own I saw something sticking out of my double chocolate donut....it made my stomach squirm immediately. I pulled at the black tiny "thing" and was shocked when I kept pulling and "it" kept coming. To my horror it turned out to be a cockroach.....yes a cockroach. I instantly became nauseous as did my brother when I showed him the less than welcome surprise I had pulled out of my donut. He unsurprisingly clutch at his throat and said, "never going there again." I know all of this sounds a little melodramatic but you have to understand that we've been going to dick's since we were basically babies and to find a cockroach in a donut puts a damper on the nostalgia we all have felt for dick's, not to mention it makes us wonder how many little critters we may or may not have ingested in the past 2 decades. The cinnamon twist is by far one of the best donuts I have ever had hands down. It was borderline a loaf of bread. Typically, I can polish off a donut or two, however eating two of dick's for breakfast is a bit of a stretch. There is not too much glaze like places tend to do, and the shortening they use does not leave a film in your mouth like places do now. It is worth the 20 minute drive to grab some dick's in the morning. I think the large donuts (Bars/twists/bear claws) where 1.20 a pop, and the regular donuts were 0.90. The donut is the quintessential American pastry, and it's entirely appropriate, therefore, that many donut stores are owned and run by anther quintessential American staple -- the immigrant entrepreneur. I eat a lot of donuts, and while you may say "hey, you've been to one donut store, you've been to them all," that's just not true. Dick's doesn't depart from the successful formula - pink boxes for the donuts, umpteen hundreds of flavored coffees, etc. -- but it raises it to an art form. Dick's succeeds on three main counts - the food, the service, and the atmosphere. The donuts are probably the best I've had outside of Dunkin' (which really is the gold standard, although they're not available in California). The raised varieties are airy but substantial, and the cake donuts are sweet with just a hint of crunch on the outside. They're also MASSIVE - a glazed twist is about 12 inches long, four inches wide, and costs all of a dollar. One can feed a family of five for a weekend. The fritters and cinnamon pinwheels are similarly oversized, but the raised and cake donuts are normal sized (but still cheap). Service-wise, everyone who works there is friendly, which matters a lot. Compared to Colonial Donuts on Lakeshore, say, which has pretty gruff service sometimes, you just feel better about your donuts, your coffee, and your outlook on life in general when you go to Dicks and they're so relaxed and friendly, even in the morning rush. Which brings me to the third point - the atmosphere. The morning rush has two components. A lot of loud, gossiping regulars (most of whom seem retired) occupying the booths, and a steady stream of commuters buying coffee. The mood is just so totally positive and upbeat among all the customers almost every time I go in that it just makes it another nice element about the store. The only negative is that it's hard to make a left out of their lot in the morning to get on 580 from High Street... More than once I've just ducked through the neighborhood to catch 580 off 35th instead. The strip mall the shop is located in is also kind of run down, which is a bummer (especially since I live in the neighborhood, and a nice strip mall would be better for property values than a blighted one! But at least there are no vacancies!) But the location is a small complaint about an otherwise awesome shop. Check it out sometime, it's worth the drive! read more

Best doughnuts in the Bay Area! Seriously. My home town has a small family-run doughnut shop that my dad and I frequented. Since moving to the Bay, I've looked all over for a place that's comparable. I've found that every other classic doughnut I've had in the Bay has been either a). too greasy, so you have one and feel terrible, or b). just doesn't taste very good. I say that having made special trips everywhere from Bob's in SF, to Johnny's in Lafayette, to a number of different places in Berkeley and Oakland. On our tour of East Bay Doughnuts, we were most excited to try Dicks. It did not disappoint. The location of Dicks is a bit seedy--there are people drinking or putting forth their best vagrant look out in the parking lot. But this is a donut store! Not a luxury hotel. The location was near a freeway exit/entrance, so some might say the location is quite speedy. Enough has been written about the love for Dick (don't read that the wrong way), but for our group, it came in second in our tasting. I usually get annoyed when I ask the doughnut vendor "what is good?" and they say "everything." Hate that. But sometimes they're not kidding. Yes, all the donut varieties were delicious. I would say, the time we went--it wasn't quite as fresh as I would have liked. But it was still as you would hope a donut place to be. If I lived closer, I would come a bit more often. These are the best most fresh donuts I've ever had in my life!!! Everytime I come here I buy more than 1. I don't go anywhere else. What a great place! I only went there for the first time today after having lived within a mile radius for 14 years. To be fair, we used to have a good donut place called Donut Time at 35th and MacArthur. But, since they closed shop on our street several years ago, we had to find a different donut spot. It just never occurred to me to try Dicks across the street from the high street walgreens. The donuts look awesome. My daughter is really craving a donut this morning m and chooses the glazed chocolate donut with some glazed donut holes. I get the cinnamon crumble donut. Amazing.
